Chapter 3: Sonya, Johnny, and Kano
Sonya stood on some cliffs on Shang Tsung's island. She was talking into her wrist com. "Have you located me?" Sonya asked into the wrist com. "There is no island." A voice replied. "I'm standing on it. Just lock onto my wrist com." Sonya said aggressively. Johnny Cage approached her, she sighed in annoyance. "Hey, beautiful. Need a hand?" He asked her. "Look I got real problems, I'm not in the mood to be hit on by some movie star." She replied before walking away. Johnny followed her. "Listen, baby. I cannot let you run loose without an escort." Johnny said grabbing her arm. Sonya pulled her arm loose before punching Johnny in the stomach and delivering a right hook to his face. "I don't need an escort. And I'm sure as hell not your baby." She told him.
Lexington, KY 1988
Johnny Cage got home from school, he was a junior at his high school where he wrestled and played football. Johnny was a natural athlete, and his good looks got him the attention of all the girls at school. He spent his free time practicing Martial Arts, his styles were Karate and Tae Kwan Do. He walked in the door of the low rent apartment he and his parents stayed at, his mother worked long hours as a nurse and his father was an unemployed alcoholic. Before his injury, Carter Cage was a forklift operator at the local car plant. He was drinking on the job one day and the high low malfunctioned, Carter got off the machine to unload the box and it fell on top of his legs dislocating his knee cap. The accident left him out of work, he was given a drug test upon arrival at the hospital and they sent the results to the plant. After being denied workman's comp due to being drunk on the job, he tried to sue the plant. After an investigation, the judge ruled his accident his own fault and denied him restitution.
Johnny walked into the living room, where his father sat drinking a beer. "Hey boy, how'd school go?" Carter asked Johnny. "Fine." Johnny replied before walking out of the room. Carter got out of his chair and grabbed his cane, he followed Johnny through the house. "Don't walk away when I'm talking to you, you little shit." Carter said in an aggressive tone. Carter grabbed Johnny by his hair and threw him into the floor, he started hitting Johnny anywhere he could with his cane. "Are you gonna get up or what?" Carter asked his son, who was covering his head with his arms. "You need to be more aggressive than that boy. Hungry people eat lunch, humble people serve it." Carter told Johnny. Johnny stood up and grabbed Carter's cane, he took it out of his father's hands and threw it across the room. Carter looked surprised but happy, he smiled at his son who was not in fighting stance. "Perhaps there is hope for you yet." Carter hobbled away from his son. The words that Carter told Johnny never left his mind.
Johnny stood over Sonya, he had beaten her in a few short moves. "Not bad for a….girl." He said as he looked at her. "Hey I'm sorry." He told her extending out his hand. "I don't need your help." She told him. "Okay, I'll just leave you to your problems." Johnny replied. "Good idea." A voice said from behind Johnny. Kano picked Johnny up and threw him over the cliff. "Now that he's softened you up, it's my turn." Kano told the fallen Sonya. His cyborg eye got out a laser beam, burning Sonya's arm. Gullible bitch, just had to point you in the wrong direction." Kano said boastfully. Johnny hung over the cliff, he looked down seeing a spiky pit. He climbed up the rocky terrain, and jumped up onto the cliff. "S.F is on the way, you won't get far." Sonya told Kano. "Oh I got a knack for survival. You on the other hand are gonna die here." Kano said boastfully.
Hong Kong, China. 1995
Sonya laid naked in bed with a glass of wine, she had fallen hard for her informant. Kano had walked out of the bathroom naked and looked at Sonya. "Baby, you are without a doubt the most beautiful woman ever created." He told her. Sonya Blade smiled at his remark, she stood up and sat her wine glass down. She walked over to the rough Australian man and kissed him. Kano became an informant for Special Forces after his capture, he bargained his freedom in exchange for the Black Dragon group of assassins. His handler was Sonya Blade, whom Kano had manipulated. Every lead Kano had given the soldier was a dead end, Sonya's partners had tried to convince her that she was being played. But Sonya was blind with love, she believed Kano wasn't using her. "The Black Dragons are planning an attack on the Red Dragon outside the city, it would be a good opportunity to finally strike." Kano told Sonya.
After a week of strategizing and planning, Sonya and her team prepared a strike at the Black Dragons. Her partner Lt Michael Castle and her were locked and loaded, Sonya lead the team to the point and she pulled out her binoculars. "Okay, I see the Red Dragon. No sign of the Black Dragons anywhere." Sonya told Castle. Before Sonya could turn around an explosion happened close by, a grenade had went off killing three of her twelve man squad. Kano and a few other Black Dragons ambushed the Special Forces squad. Kano, with a machine gun in his hand, killed Lt Castle. He then turned his sights to Sonya. "Having fun baby?" He asked her before laughing. "You bastard!" Sonya shouted before grabbing her pistol and shooting at Kano. Kano used a human shield as cover, returning fire at the lone soldier. Kano fled with the Black Dragon, leaving Sonya the only one left alive out of her squad.
Johnny had jumped back up on the cliff, he dusted off the arm of his coat. "Step away from the lady." He told her. "Everyone thinks my moves are all wirework and special effects. Truth is. I am the special effects." Johnny told Kano. Kano lunched at Johnny and threw a front kick, Johnny blacked the kick and sidestepped Kano. Johnny punched Kano four times in the side, before elbowing the back of the head. Johnny threw a jab at Kano, who dodged it and grabbed Johnny by the back of his dead. Kano attempted to knee Johnny's face twice, both attempts were blocked. Johnny put his arms together in an arch to break Kano's hold, he then brought his hands down in a V motion and with all his might his Kano's shoulders. Kano fell to his knees and Johnny kicked Kano in the face, knocking him back. "Throw that on your barbie…Shrimp." Johnny said in a confused manner.
Sonya sat on her knees, looking up at Johnny. "Thanks." She told him. "No problem. Who was that guy anyway?" He asked in response. He held out his hand, Sonya took it and he helped her to her feet. "His name's Kano, he was an informant in our black dragon investigation. Big time arms dealers. Turns out he was their leader giving us the run around. A lot of our guys got killed because of him." Sonya explained. "So that's not a costume? You're actual military?" Johnny asked. "Special Forces." Sonya replied. "Get out. So you know about this threat to the world stuff? Liu Kang called in the cavalry." Johnny asked. "Liu Kang? No idea who you're talking about. I appreciate your help, Cage." Sonya said before extending her hand. "Johnny." He replied before shaking her hand. "But right now, I got other things to take care of. My CO is somewhere on this island. I have to find him." Sonya said before walking off.
