June

Jay kicked the door to his apartment open and walked in backwards carrying Hailey.

She laughed, "That was extreme. Don't forget that we actually don't own this place and will need to pay for any damages."

"I know a guy," Jay said as he brought her to his room.

Their room.

It was their apartment now and their room.

Hailey laughed harder, "Of course you do."

Jay smiled and dropped her on the bed so he could crawl on top of her, "When do you think we could look for a new place though?"

"What kind of place?" Hailey set her hands on either side of his face.

"Mm, a house," Jay kissed the side of her neck, "I want a house with you."

"We got married a week ago," Hailey titled her head back, "Do we have to think of buying a house right now?"

"Seeing as we were engaged for a grand total of thirteen days, it seems normal to speed up this part," Jay smirked against her skin, "But we can forget about it for a little bit."

Hailey breathed out and gripped the waistband of his pants, "Maybe longer than a little bit?"

Jay chuckled and kissed under her ear, "I can do that," he slipped his hands under her back and lifted her hips up.

Hailey got lost in the feeling of him for a moment before her eyes shot open and she pulled herself from his lips, "Did you close the door?"

"Um," Jay took a deep breath to steady himself then glanced to his open bedroom door, "Maybe?"

"Well," Hailey lightly pushed his chest, "Go look. And go get our suitcases from the car."

"Yes, wife," Jay winked and untangled himself from her legs to lightly jog out of the room.

Hailey heard the front door close behind him and sat up. She looked around the room and couldn't help but laugh.

They were married.

She married Jay Halstead.

Wow.

She lifted her left hand up and stared at her new rings. Just over two weeks ago, she had no rings whatsoever on her hand. Now she had an engagement ring and a wedding band to match.

The smile on Hailey's face easily lit up the room as she got out of bed and hurried to the closet to look for her purple duffle bag she had told Vanessa to stash there.

"Yeah, it's fine. He doesn't have an alarm system; you won't be caught."

"Okay, you better be right because I'm leaving now."

"You packed the black one, right?"

"And a red one that I found."

"No, no, not the red one, I wore that with Adam."

"Shoot, sorry, I didn't know. I'll go put it back."

"Get rid of that; just throw it out. Black one only. Actually…you can grab the green one too. He likes that one."

"Got it. And what am I getting out of this?"

"Getting out of what?"

"Going through your underwear drawer so I can find lingerie for you that I'm soon going to hide away in your detective boyfriend's-"

"Husband's."

"Right, sorry, still not used to that, husband's apartment just so he can rip it off of you."

"Oh, Jay doesn't rip it. He would never rip my clothes."

"Sounds kind of boring, Hails."

"Shut up."

"Whatever. Okay, I'm gonna go. Enjoy your honeymoon."

"Thanks. You're the best."

"I know."

She pulled the black outfit out of the bag and smiled at it before quickly losing the clothes she had worn on the plane ride home and slipping into the lingerie Kim had bought her for her bachelorette party.

Hailey kicked her clothes and the bag back into the closet and pulled the ponytail from her hair just as she heard the front door open again.

"Honey, I'm home," Jay called out then laughed to himself.

Hailey looked around the room as she tried to decide how to pose. She whined to herself and nervously shook her hands then dove onto the bed. She quickly rolled onto her back and attempted to fluff her hair.

Jay walked into the room, "Okay, let's – whoa."

Hailey smiled at him and sat up, "Hi."

Jay dropped the suitcases then quickly started undoing his belt, "You're so damn hot."

Hailey laughed softly, "You think so?"

"God yes," Jay pulled his shirt off before shoving his pants down. He crawled over her on the mattress and whispered, "I'm the luckiest man alive."

Hailey laughed as his lips met hers.

Jay confidently held Hailey's hand as they walked into the district together the next day. He smiled at everyone they passed and even waved to a few people.

Hailey blushed and laughed, "Knock it off."

"I'm married now, I can do what I want," Jay smirked and kissed the side of her head.

"We should still be professional," Hailey whispered and set a hand on his chest.

Jay groaned softly, but kissed her head one last time and stepped away, dropping her hand, "Gotcha."

Hailey spotted Trudy staring at them with a small smile on her face and lightly patted Jay's arm, "I'll meet you up there, just want to say something to Platt first."

"Okay," Jay smiled and left her to head upstairs.

Hailey turned to Trudy and took a deep breath before walking over to the front desk, "Hey, Sarge."

"How was the honeymoon?" Trudy smiled.

"Perfect," Hailey said and leaned against the desk, "Can we talk about something?"

"If it's about your honeymoon, I don't want to hear anything other than what you ate for your meals," Trudy said.

Hailey laughed, "It's not about that, though everything we ate was delicious by the way."

Trudy nodded, "All right, what do you need?"

"Um," Hailey looked toward the stairs Jay had just disappeared up, "You know those nametags on our vests," she touched her chest where one would be placed, "How long does it take for those to get made?"

Trudy smiled knowingly, "I wasn't sure if you'd do it."

"I need to," Hailey said softly, "So can you-"

Trudy nodded and reached under her desk to pull out a white envelope, "Give me your hand."

Hailey raised an eyebrow and put her hand out, "What're you doing?"

Trudy ignored her question and dumped out a small, black piece of fabric into her hand.

Hailey felt the air stick in her chest as she flipped the piece of fabric over between her fingers to see the letters embroidered on it:

H. Halstead

She looked up at Trudy, "How did you know?"

"Just a feeling," Trudy answered, "I had it made when I found out Voight was walking you down the aisle."

"Ah," Hailey rubbed her hand over her arm, "Well, thank you so much. What do I have to do to get this sewed on?"

"Just bring me your vest by the end of the day and I'll see if I can get a rush on it," Trudy said, "If you can get Jay's too, that'd be great."

"Jay's?" Hailey asked while placing the tag back in the envelope, "For what?"

"Notice the 'H' on yours? His needs to be changed too," Trudy slipped the envelope back under her desk, "Can't have two unidentified Halsteads running around causing trouble, can we?"

"Oh," Hailey slowly nodded, "I guess I can do that."

She moved to walk away, but stopped when Trudy said, "Something you need to say?"

Hailey took a deep breath then shook her head, "No, I'll figure it out. Thanks." She patted the desk then headed upstairs to see Jay showing Kevin and Adam pictures from their honeymoon on his phone.

"Look, we literally saw a shark," he was saying, "I swear, I was like two feet away from it."

Kevin looked up and noticed Hailey, "Hey! It's the misses. Is this shark story true?"

"I have pictures," Jay said weakly.

Hailey smiled, "Yeah, it's true." She walked over and hugged Kevin, "Hi, hold down the fort while I was gone?"

"Uh, that was definitely me," Adam interrupted with a chuckle, "Hey, Hails."

"Hey," Hailey smiled and lightly punched his arm.

"There's my favorite detective," Kim said as she rounded the corner with Vanessa and hurried over to pull Hailey into a hug.

"I am really feeling unloved," Jay shook his head and pocketed his phone.

"Oh, I'll hug you if you really insist," Vanessa teased and hugged Jay tightly, "Have fun?"

Hailey laughed and put her arm out for Vanessa, "We had a blast. Thank you guys for helping foot the bill."

"Easiest wedding gift I ever bought," Adam smiled.

"Because you frequently purchase wedding gifts," Kim nodded, "Got it."

"Watch it," Adam pointed at her.

"Mhmm," Kim smiled and went to her desk.

Jay looked to Kevin, "Did they finally…"

"Not that I know of," Kevin shook his head and clasped his hand on Jay's shoulder before going over to his own chair.

"Welcome back," Hank said while walking up the stairs, "Ready to get to work?"

"Always," Jay chuckled and shook his hand as he walked over.

"Where do you need us?" Hailey asked.

"Uh," Hank turned to look at the board, "Well, we needed to wrap this case up today, feel like strapping up and coming with instead of that paperwork on your desks that needs to be finished?"

"Stupid question."

"I'm in."

Hank nodded, "I like your wife better than you, Halstead."

Hailey smiled wide at Jay, "Win."

"Stop," Jay laughed and led the way to the locker room.

Hailey watched him open his locker so he could slip his vest on. She bit her lip then walked over to help him straighten it out.

"Thanks," Jay said, "Here," he reached over and opened her locker, "I'll help you."

Hailey nodded and stared at the Halstead sewn across his chest while pulling her vest on.

"You good?" Jay asked and fixed her vest for her.

"Yeah," Hailey shook her head and rubbed her face, "Can we talk about something later?"

"Of course," Jay smiled and kissed her forehead before closing his locker and grabbing her hand to lead her out.

As everyone finished putting themselves back together in the locker room later that night, Jay put an arm around Hailey's shoulder and said, "Hey, we'd like to take you all out for a round or two tonight."

Hailey nodded, "As a thank you for everything you did for the wedding last week."

"I have nothing against that," Adam smiled and looked to Kim, "Come on, I'll drive."

Vanessa watched Kim laugh softly and follow him out. "But she's my ride," she sighed.

"We'll drive you," Jay offered.

"Wait," Hailey set a hand on his arm.

Jay raised an eyebrow, "Yeah?"

"Thanks, Jay," Vanessa shouldered her bag and walked out with Kevin.

"I…never mind," Hailey shook her head, "It can wait."

"You sure?" Jay walked with her out to the parking lot.

"Yeah, we just really need to talk tonight," Hailey said.

Jay stopped and held her shoulders, "What's going on?"

"Nothing, come on," Hailey nodded toward Vanessa waiting by Jay's truck and walked away.

Jay blew out his breath and whispered, "Okay."

Jay tossed his keys on the counter as he and Hailey entered the apartment, "All right, I am all yours, Hailey Anne. What's going on?"

She smiled slightly at him, "It's late."

"You're deflecting," Jay said. He pointed toward the couch, "Come on. We're talking."

"Maybe I preferred you when you were more closed off," Hailey teased while sitting down.

"Ha ha, you are so funny," Jay rolled his eyes. He sat next to her, "You've been wanting to say something all day, so what better time than the present?"

"Okay," Hailey nodded and grabbed his hand, "Well, I want to do something, and I actually kind of already started the process, but then I realized that this doesn't just sort of affect you but really affects you and so I thought maybe I need your permission-"

"You don't need my permission to do anything," Jay interrupted.

Hailey took a deep breath and hesitantly looked up to meet his eyes, "Okay, but…"

"Just tell me," Jay brushed her hair back from her face.

Hailey bit her lip, "I – um – I'm going to – wait, no – I would like to change my last name to Halstead."

Jay held back a smile and nodded, "Okay."

"Is that okay with you?" Hailey asked.

Jay chuckled, "Hailey…come on."

She finally cracked a smile, "You're okay with it?"

"Yeah, of course," Jay said and squeezed her hand, "As long as you're okay with it and not just doing it because it's a tradition or whatever for girls to change their name when they get married."

Hailey shook her head, "Definitely not. I've wanted this for a really long time."

Jay raised an eyebrow, "How come?"

"Jay," Hailey said softly, "You know."

He thought for a moment then nodded and hugged her tightly – memories of the few times he'd interacted with her dad flooding his mind.

"I think it'll help me really move on," Hailey whispered.

"Then let's do it," Jay rubbed his hands over her back, "New chapter in our lives."

Hailey smiled against his shoulder, "Exactly."

Jay held her until she pulled away then asked, "Why wouldn't I want this?"

"Well, turns out Platt already thought I was going to change my name," Hailey explained, "So she had new patches made and we'll have to have our first initial with our last name – both of us."

Jay nodded, "Got it."

Hailey stared at him, "You really don't mind?"

He laughed, "Hailey, no. I am completely okay with all of this. I just want you happy."

"I promise, I'm happy," Hailey smiled.

"Good," Jay kissed her forehead, "Anything else you want to talk about?"

Hailey shook her head then stood, grabbing his hand, "I think that's it…Oh, I think I'll take Wednesday off so I can go around and officially change my last name, but that's it."

"Need me to come with you?" Jay asked as they walked to their bedroom.

"No, it shouldn't be too hard," Hailey shrugged, "I'm not worried."

"Perfect," Jay made eye contact with her and fell back on the bed.

Hailey laughed and crawled on top of him, "Comfortable?"

Jay grabbed her hips, "As long as I'm with you, yes."

"So cheesy and such a lie," Hailey laughed harder.

"I'm not lying," Jay chuckled.

"We both know you don't like sharing a bed when it's hot outside," Hailey smirked.

"I hate the heat," Jay shrugged.

"Exactly," Hailey kissed his forehead.

"Our house needs air conditioning," Jay squeezed her waist.

"Again with the house," Hailey rolled off of him onto her back and stared up at the ceiling.

"Do you not want a house?" Jay looked at her.

She took a deep breath, "It scares me."

Jay raised an eyebrow, "You lived in a condo."

"Yeah, but a house is legit," Hailey said, "What if something happens?"

"Then we'll deal with it," Jay slid his hand over and held her fingers, "I'm kind of done living in an apartment, Hails."

She turned her head to meet his eyes and sighed, "Yeah, I guess."

"If it helps, my lease isn't up until the end of August," Jay said softly, "We have two months to look for a house."

Hailey slowly nodded, "And I think that'll give us enough time to figure out what we want."

Jay smiled, "Do you know what you'd want in a house?"

Hailey's eyes scanned over his face and she pictured a little boy that looked just like him. She nodded again and bit her lip over her own smile.

"Care to share?" Jay asked with a soft laugh.

"Another bedroom," Hailey breathed, "For sure."

Jay glanced down to her middle and his smile widened, "I think that'd be a good idea."

Hailey played with his fingers, "I think we should wait a little bit, but…I want a family with you – another reason why I want to change my last name. I want us all to really be connected and for it to be clear that we're together. It'd be confusing if my last name was different than my son's."

Jay's eyes lit up at the mention of a son, "You think we're going to have a boy?"

"Right now it's what I imagine," Hailey smiled and turned onto her side. She swirled her hand over his chest, "But honestly, it changes a lot. Do you…do you picture a boy?"

"Honestly, I picture a little girl that looks like you," Jay said, "Don't get me wrong, though, the idea of a daughter terrifies me, but I really do want a little carbon copy of you."

Hailey laughed, "My mom used to always say-"

She stopped and her stomach twisted. Her eyes flickered to her hand resting over Jay's shirt and to the diamond ring catching the soft light of the lamp.

"Hmm?" Jay pushed himself up on his elbows.

"I…oh god," Hailey whispered to herself and sat up, "I guess I do deserve a daughter like me."

Jay smirked, "I'm sensing you're meaning that as an insult, but I'm not following."

Hailey quickly grabbed her phone, "Do you think it's too late to call my mom?"

"Um," Jay looked at the clock on his nightstand, "Yeah, it's pushing midnight, Hails."

"Crap," Hailey shakily set her phone back down.

"Hey, what's happening?" Jay asked.

Hailey bit her lip, "Don't be mad, but I never told my parents."

Jay stared at her, "About what?"

She held up her left hand.

Jay blinked, "No."

"Yes."

"No."

"Yes."

Jay pressed his hands to his face, "So you want me to die."

Hailey rolled her eyes, "Don't be dramatic."

"Hailey Anne, your parents hate me because I don't have a degree," Jay mumbled, "And now I've gone and married their daughter without their permission? I'm going to die."

"They don't hate you," Hailey said softly.

Jay snorted then peeked his eyes out from his fingers, "Then why are you scared about what we've done?"

"Because my dad already doesn't like me and my mom has her weird perfection thing," Hailey waved her hand, "They're going to ream me out."

Jay sighed, "This isn't good. Well, whatever, I mean…we made our choice not to include them, that's on us."

"I don't regret it one bit," Hailey said, "Jay, I swear to you."

"I know, I know," Jay moved closer to her and rubbed his thumb over her cheek, "I loved our wedding, I guess I just thought you at least sent a text or something."

Hailey rolled her eyes and pulled away from him.

"What?" Jay's eyes widened.

"Why was it on me?" Hailey asked.

"Because they're your parents," Jay said.

Hailey huffed and pressed her pillow into her face. She wanted to scream, but she had to remember that she shared a room now and that Jay was right there.

As if he could read her mind, Jay mumbled and scooted away from her, "Do you want to scream?"

"Yes," Hailey whined.

"Sorry," Jay breathed, "I can go over there on Wednesday while you're going around changing your name and just deal with it."

"No," Hailey flipped over to face him, "I can't have you do that. They'll be pissed."

"They'll be pissed at you too," Jay shrugged.

"But I'm their daughter, I can take it," Hailey said.

"I don't like that," Jay shook his head, "I don't want you hurting."

"They won't hurt me," Hailey sat up, "Promise."

Jay gently cupped her face, "That's a silly promise."

Hailey breathed out, "Want to call them together tomorrow after work?"

Jay tried to smile, "Sure."

"We'll be okay," Hailey rested her head on his shoulder.

"I know," Jay tangled his fingers in her hair.

Hailey leaned up and kissed his jaw.

Jay closed his eyes, "Not really in the mood even though I know my life ends tomorrow."

Hailey couldn't help but laugh softly, "That's dramatic."

"I don't care," Jay mumbled, "Let's just lay here together and take in these last few hours as a couple."

Hailey laughed harder and wrapped her arms around him, "At least we're going out together, right?"

Jay finally chuckled and nodded, "Sure."

Hailey trailed her lips up to his cheek and whispered, "I love you."

Jay turned his head so his nose brushed against hers and he smiled, "I love you too."

Hailey was about to press send on her email when she noticed her signature.

Detective Hailey Upton, Chicago Police Department 21st District

She breathed shakily and glanced up where Jay was talking to Hank in his office. A smile spread across her face and she clicked the 'settings' button. She quickly made the necessary changes and then happily pressed send, staring at her new signature that made her heart swell maybe just a bit too much for something so simple, but she didn't care.

Detective Hailey Halstead, Chicago Police Department 21st District

"Whoa!" Kim laughed from her own desk.

Hailey turned to look at her, "Yeah?"

Kim smiled, "You changed your name."

Hailey laughed softly and nodded, having forgotten that Kim was included on the email she just sent, "I did."

"I love it," Kim said, "I'm so happy for you."

Hailey felt like her smile couldn't spread any wider as she replied, "Thank you." She was about to turn around when she added, "I feel really happy. I don't know if I've ever been this happy in my life."

"As long as you're happy, they should be happy, right?" Jay weakly said as both he and Hailey stared at her phone on the coffee table.

"You know that's not how my parents work," Hailey sighed.

"I know, but I was hoping something changed," Jay rubbed his face, "Okay, let's just do it." He reached forward and pressed the call button then the speaker phone.

Hailey's eyes widened and she hit his arm, "Jay! What the hell?"

"What?" he whispered, "We need to do this."

"Oh my god," Hailey groaned.

"Hailey! Hi, honey!" Christine Upton greeted.

Hailey cleared her throat, "Hi, Mom."

"I'm so happy to hear from you," Christine said, "It's been so long. Do you need money or something?"

Hailey winced, "No, Mom. I…is Dad there? I have something to tell you both."

"Oh my god, it's happening," Christine whispered. They could hear her starting to walk through the house, calling out her husband's name.

Jay looked to Hailey and mouthed, 'What?'

She shook her head and ran her hand through her hair.

"Okay, here he is," Christine said, "Rob, Hailey's on the phone."

"And Jay," Hailey quickly told them.

There was a beat as Hailey's mom turned on her own speaker phone, then her dad said, "What do you need, slugger?"

"Do I really need something to call my parents?" Hailey asked.

"You never call us," Rob Upton said.

"Maybe something is wrong," Christine guessed.

"Actually," Hailey met her eyes with Jays', "Nothing is wrong. Everything is really, really right."

Jay smiled at her then took a deep breath, "We have some big news to tell you both."

"You're pregnant," Christine quickly said, "Oh my god, my baby's having a baby out of wedlock."

"You better be marrying my daughter, son," Rob added.

"I'm not-" Hailey sighed, "I'm not pregnant, but we are married."

Jay's eyes widened, shocked that she just spit it out.

Her parents must have been shocked as well because they didn't say anything for a solid minute. Hailey even checked her phone to make sure the call didn't drop.

"When?" Christine eventually whispered.

Hailey's hands shook and she tried to talk, but nothing came out.

"About ten days ago," Jay answered for her.

They were silent again.

"I'm happy," Hailey tried.

Rob scoffed and breathed, "Sure."

"I am," Hailey defended, "Jay is a good man-"

"How long?" Christine quietly asked.

"How-How long?" Hailey repeated, "What do you mean?"

"How long were you engaged?" Christine asked, "Hailey, I haven't heard from you since the text on Mother's Day."

"At least you got a text," Rob said.

Hailey breathed shakily, "We…We were engaged for thirteen days."

"Oh my god," Rob groaned loudly and Hailey could practically see him throwing his fit, "Thirteen days! Hailey Anne! Where is your self respect?"

"Hey," Jay snapped, "Do not talk to her that way."

"You shouldn't say anything right now," Christine snapped.

Hailey and Jay's eyes widened. Her mom rarely raised her voice at all and she'd been generally accepting of Jay since she met him the year before.

"Mom," Hailey said softly, "Don't blame him."

"Oh, I'm not putting all of the blame on him," Christine said, "You did this too."

"What were you thinking?" Rob asked, "Hailey, I am so disappointed in you."

Jay grabbed the phone and ended the call.

Hailey's mouth dropped open, "Jay."

"I'm not going to sit here and let them belittle you," Jay shook his head and turned her phone completely off, "We didn't do anything wrong."

Hailey thought for a moment then hugged him tightly.

It threw him off, but Jay wrapped his arms around her and whispered, "You are a good person, Hailey, you don't deserve being treated like that. You made the right choice in not telling them."

Hailey blinked past the tears forming in her eyes and nodded, "Thank you."

Jay held the back of her hair, "You're welcome."

Hailey closed her eyes and sniffled, moving against him to press her face into his neck.

Jay was her family.

He had been for a while, but now it was going to be completely official and the happiness and warmth it brought her was completely unmatched.

She was ecstatic that within 24 hours, she was dropping the Upton from her name and becoming Hailey Halstead for good.
