Okay, this should've been up like 4 years ago. But... yeah. I hope everyone who even remembers this story is doing well during the disaster that is 2020.
Unfortunately, last year my notebook got thrown out. So along with the notes I needed for class, most of what I had written for the next two chapters and the rest of the story is now gone. I've been struggling to try to remember what I wrote down and wrap up the story but it's hard. I wrote them down for a reason.
I'm really glad you guys enjoyed the last chapter. So much for Jinx being a mysterious character, you guys called her out right away.
Mitsuba: I think their ship name is Traught, I could be wrong. I love Jinx and KF in Teen Titans but sorry that's not going to happen in this story. Maybe I'll write a Teen Titans fanfic with them and BBxRae one day.
Weiver: Don't worry, I love Jinx too, hopefully you'll like what I do with her. But no spoilers.
Wally quietly sipped his tea. He sighed as the heat relaxed him a bit. His mother fixing him a few snacks, even from the kitchen she could see her son was still a bit tense. Wally had ran to his parents' home in Central city after being released from the med bay in the watchtower. Seeing as he couldn't go home, this was the next best choice.
But the silence was slightly unnerving, Mary was used to her son being energetic and never stopping. Seeing Wally just sitting in the dining room staring into space was very unusual. He had been quiet since he arrived, only saying hello and if he can have something to eat.
After making a few sandwiches, Mary walked out of the kitchen to see Wally staring into his tea. Placing the food in front of him, she adjusted her robe and she sat across from him, hoping this would snap him out of it. It was a minute or two before Wally seemed to come to his senses and finally noticed his mother sitting before him. She gestured to the sandwiches on table and watched him slowly grab one and take a bite.
"Wally, is everything alright?" Mary finally asked. She startled Wally a bit, as he started to cough after swallowing.
He sighed. "I may have messed up my marriage."
"What happened?"
"She kicked me out after an argument we had."
"About?"
"A bunch of things, including the baby."
Mary smiled a bit. "Oh Wally, that's normal. Hormones will do that to a woman. Do you know how many times I've kicked your father out during-"
"This was different." Wally interrupted her.
The smile left her face. "Different how?"
"A few months ago, Bart had said we were going to lose this kid. He said it happened in his timeline and he didn't know if it were to happen again. So I got paranoid. I kinda controlled everywhere Artemis went, I made sure she was always with someone and I barely let her leave the house."
"That explains why I've barely seen her."
"I'm sorry, but I couldn't take the chance of anything happening to her. I knew a fight was coming, .. just didn't think it would be this bad."
"But you know if something had happened, Artemis can take care of herself." Mary reasoned. "I've seen her do incredible things."
"Most of which she can't do while carrying a child. Mom, I-I just wanted to protect them."
"Well what did you say?"
Wally looked down at his half-eaten sandwich then back at his mother. He suddenly felt like a kid again after seeing her stern look. "We both said some pretty bad things. I pretty much blamed her if we did lose the baby, that she was a danger to herself and this kid." Mary's eyes widened a bit. Wally shoved his hands in his face. "I know, I know. I shouldn't have said that, but I just lost it when she brought up the arctic again. She.. said.. that she should've left me, like I left her." Wally dropped his hands on the table and looked at his mother. "Are you guys still upset with me about that? I thought I did the right thing."
"No sweetie," Mary put a hand over his. "we're just glad you came back to us. We both know Artemis didn't mean that."
"But that got me thinking." Wally put down his sandwich. "If we do lose the baby, maybe she should've left me after I came back."
"No, Wally, don't say things like that." She rubbed his hand. "Artemis loves you, you know that. She was hurting just as much as we were when you were gone. Listen, your disappearance is and will probably always be a sensitive subject for Artemis and the rest of the family. But we're not talking about that right now."
"Then why would Artemis say that?"
"Because what you said hurt her Wally. She was just going to say what she knew would hurt you. You're both stubborn and passionate people, you're going to say what will affect someone the most. In the end, you both know you didn't mean it. Did you mean it Wally?"
Wally exhaled. "Of course not."
"Exactly." This is when Wally felt his phone start to vibrate. "Go on, maybe it's Artemis."
Wally looked at the phone, half hoping it was Artemis and half expecting it not to be. It turned out to be his best friend. Wally had remembered the look on Dick's face when the fight was over and decided not answer the call.
"Aren't you going to answer it?"
"Nah, it's just Dick. I don't feel like having another person yell at me tonight." Wally said, muting the ringtone from the call.
"It could be important."
"It could be nothing. I don't want to be bothered right now." Wally sighed again and put a hand on his forehead. "Anyway, do you mind if I stay in my old room for tonight?"
"Only if you talk to Artemis tomorrow. You need to work things out with her." Mary said.
"I know, I will eventually. Good night mom."
"Good night hun. Try and get some rest." Mary kissed his forehead and walked away.
Wally finished his sandwich before getting up and cleaning. He walked up the stairs, careful not to disturb his parents. He slowly opened the door to his childhood room. It's the cleanest his room has ever been. The bed is made with what smelt like fresh clean sheets, all of his old clothes are folded and neatly placed in his dresser instead of on the floor. Sure, a lot things are missing from when he moved out for college but he last remembered it looking as if a tornado hit.
Wally changed his clothes, surprised at least one pair of pjs still fit and rested in bed. He stared at the ceiling, alone with his thoughts.
'... that's exactly why we lose this kid!'
He shivered. 'Why did I say that to her?' He turned over in bed a couple times for finally falling asleep, oblivious to his still vibrating phone.
Artemis woke up feeling sore and confused, she tried to sit up but fell back with a gasp. Pain ached through her lower body.
"Don't strain yourself. You're not getting up until the doctor gives you more pain meds." Someone voiced next to her, Artemis turned to see Dick curled up uncomfortably in a chair next to her bed. She raised a brow. "How do you feel?"
"Confused and in pain." She rubbed her eyes. Her other hand instinctively went to her stomach. "Dick, what happe-?" Her eyes went wide when she discovered it to be flatter than it should. "Wha- what?" She looked down at her smaller stomach in disbelief.
Dick stared at the floor. "Artemis."
When Dick didn't get a response he looked at her. Artemis was looking up at the ceiling, her eyes moving frantically, as if trying process everything.
"I'm sorry Artemis." She lowered her head slowly to look at him and he didn't meet her eyes. "You had a miscarriage."
Artemis stared at him for a few moments, then slowly turned to her stomach, putting both hands on it. The life that was there: one she had gotten used to, the one she had bonded with, that she and Wally created and were excited to meet, was gone.
After a few minutes of silence, Artemis finally spoke in hushed voice. "There.. was.. n-no saving it?"
"It already too late."
"Oh." She started to wring her fingers together. "And Wally? Does he know?"
He was hoping she wouldn't ask that, he'd be trying come up with some excuse for Wally. "I tried calling him, he's not picking up. I'll try again later."
"Did.. you try anyone else?" Her voice was getting lower and lower.
"I called your mom and your sister, they should be here anytime now." She nodded, words escaping her.
Artemis could feel hot tears building up in her eyes. She looked down at her fingers that she had been squeezing, hoping that her bangs covered her eyes. "..Right."
"Artemis." Dick put one hand on hers. "Are you going to be okay?" She struggled to keep the tears in.
"Yeah, I mean.. I've been through worse right?" Her voice cracked a bit.
"Do you want me to get you anything?"
"Can I just.. be alone right now?" Dick nodded, getting up from his spot on the bed. He slowly and quietly closed the door behind him.
As the door clicked shut, the tears that had been building up rolled down her cheeks. She quietly sobbed, grinning her teeth. How could it all go so wrong so fast? She covered her eyes with her hands, not even fighting the tears anymore. Artemis didn't know if it was the leftover hormones making her feel even worse but right now all she could do was cry. She was all alone, what else could she do?
Meanwhile, in the hallway, Dick leaned against the wall across the blonde's room and stared at the door. He was exhausted, all of this was mentally and emotionally tiring. Why was this happening? Where was Wally and why wasn't he answering? How could he help Artemis? Why was he the one to break the news to her? Her face hurt him more than finding out the news himself. All these questions flooding his mind needed to be answered, but it didn't look like that was happening any time soon.
He looked at his watch, it was currently 5 in the morning and he had barely gotten any sleep in the uncomfortable position he was in. Deciding it was finally time to get some coffee, Dick walked toward where knew he could get a decent cup, the nurses station, which is where he found Artemis' older sister arguing with the current nurse and her mother, motioning her to calm down.
Dick wasn't sure if he wanted to help her or not with all noise they were making. Sighing, he gave up on his coffee and walked toward them.
"Listen, if you don't tell me where my sister is.." Jade threatened.
"Like I said before, it would be against our policy to allow people in at this time. Now please leave." The nurse enforced as she continued writing some documents.
"Lady, do you know how many ways I could hurt you with that pen?" Jade glared at her.
"Try me." The nurse glared back.
"I'll take you to her." Dick interrupted the glaring contest. "This is Artemis West's mother and sister. I can vouch for them."
"Thank you-"
"Dick, show us the way." Jade cut her mom off. Whether she was saying a nickname or actually calling him one, he didn't know and was too tired to care as he lead them to the elevator.
Dick paused right before reaching the room. "I.. just told her the news so.." He shoved his hands in his pockets.
Paula shook her head. "This is when she needs me most." She wheeled herself towards the room, leaving Jade, still scowling, alone with Dick.
"Why were you the one to tell her? Are you the only one here? Where's Wally?"
"I don't know, but now that you're here I can find out."
"You better, before I track his ass down myself." Jade's fists clenched while she walked past him. She didn't give him a second glance before joining her mother.
Dick watched as they closed the door behind them. He rubbed his eyes before putting his shades back and walked down back to the elevator. Now that Artemis wasn't alone, he can finally track down his best friend and he had an idea on where he might be.
Wally felt a presence by him before he had even opened his eyes. When he did, he saw his best friend staring down at him with an extremely tired look on his face. "Dude, what are you doing here?" He started sitting up. "Is there some sort of mission?"
"Get dressed, we're going to the hospital." Wally wasn't expecting such a raspy voice.
"Hospital? Is everything alright?" The red head rushed to get ready.
"It's Artemis, so hurry up."
"What?!" That stopped him mid-zip. "I-Is she okay? Are they-"
"She's fine," Dick exclaimed. "..now. Just hurry up and we'll go see her." He hoped Wally would just go along quietly. He was running on barely an hour of sleep and after a mission where his friend was stabbed and explaining somber news to his other friend, Dick was not in the mood to deal with anything extra. Thankfully Wally seemed to sense the dread and exhaustion in his voice and quietly followed his friend.
