Kate McGregor sat on the edge of the bed pulling her robe tighter around her. She sighed as she watched her best friend Nikki Catano as she was rummaging through her wardrobe. Well, the wardrobe she had taken over it was Nikki's house until NAVCOM managed to find her quarters off base.
"What about this one?" Nikki asked holding out a straight blue and grey tartan dress with a white peter-pan collar and white bands around the arms.
"no way!" Kate said folding her arms in defiance
"why. It's cute" Nikki grinned
"yeah, it is cute if I wanted to look like I was back in high school." Kate replied
Holding it up Nikki took another look at the dress. "now you mention it, it does look kind of Schooley. Why did you buy it?" she asked
"it was half off. And he said..." she trailed off not wanting to think about the reasons why she picked it out. "look this is hopeless I have nothing reason one million and one why this is a bad idea" Kate said standing to leave
"sit" Nikki ordered
Doing as she was told Kate sat back on the edge of the bed watching as Nikki went back in to the wardrobe "we will find something and you are going on this date.
Eventually they found a red dress Kate had forgotten she had. It was tight fitting around the bodice with a lace overlay and a flowing skirt that sat just below the knee. Hanging the dress on the back of the door Nikki turned to her friend
"so, what about underwear?" she asked
"Nikki it's a blind date that I don't want to go on so I am not about to do a strip tease" Kate said
"I didn't mean it like that but if you feel like doing that no judgement from me, I mean it has been long enough"
"yeah, my husband left me remember"
"I know. Back to my point. If you have the right foundations on then it makes you feel more confident and it makes the dress look better" Nikki smiled
"I know but isn't it enough you have me going on this date without me having to squeeze in to skimpy underwear."
"Kit it's been three years. You need some fun back in your life"
"may I remind you of my earlier statement. My husband left me for someone practically half my age"
"yes, and you have been blue ever since. I though moving up here was so you could have a fresh start. Let your hair down and have some fun" Nikki sighed. "but speaking of hair" she grinned turning around holding a curling wand.
"hell to the no" Kate said
"yeah, I thought you might say that. Girls!" she called
Looking at the door Kate smiled as her two 6-year-old twins ran in with their beauty coats on. each of them held on to an arm pinning them to her side
"nice using the girls against me" Kate smiled.
"well needs must" Niki grinned
It was pointless trying to resist and fight against it, and at least with Nikki doing her hair and make-up she stood a chance of looking nice and less like coco the clown.
"Kit will you keep still" Nikki sighed
"sorry" Kate replied not moving her lips a Nikki was applying the last touch of lipstick
"it's fine. You are done" she smiled stepping back handing Kate a hand mirror
"it's a bit much isn't it?" Kate asked brushing a strand of hair off of her face.
"no and don't even think about going to wash that face or brush out those curls." Nikki smiled "right come on girls let's let mummy get ready. Who wants ice cream"?
"meeee" both girls called bouncing off the bed racing out of the room
Kate watched smiling as the girls bounded out of the room
"I'll let you get sorted" Nikki smiled quickly following the girls out
"thanks" Kate smiled standing,
Pulling the dress on she looked in the full-length mirror. Nikki had curled her hair in to soft ringlets pinning them back in to a medieval knot. Sighing why was she putting herself through this. Blind dates were cringy and knowing Nikkis taste in men then this was not going to end well. Sliding her feet in to a pair of black heeled pumps she walked out in to the living room.
"wow you look like a princess mummy"
"thank you Sovay" Kate smiled.
"wait mummy" Aimee called jumping down from the table running in to her room.
She returned moments later with her silver plastic crown it had little green plastic gems in and was part of her princess costume.
"thank you, Aimee, but I don't think a crown goes with my dress. And princesses only wear crowns around the castle don't they" Kate smiled
Walking round the table she kissed the girls on the top of the head so as to avoid the ice cream mouths, they had.
"be good" she told each of them
Picking up her bag she opened it to put her phone in.
"seriously" she grinned spying what Nikki had put in her bag when she wasn't looking
"have fun" Nikki smiled
"I won't" Kate called
"don't do anything I wouldn't do" Nikki grinned as the door slammed shut behind Kate.
Standing on the door step Kate walked towards her taxi. Sliding in to the back seat she closed her eyes. She just hoped that this was going to be alright.

This is still Blind date i am just re doing chapter 2 onwards as i really wasnt happy with them and consequently couldn't make my new chapter work. as i said Sovay is a French way of spelling Sophie.
really sorry but my brain has been all over the place with worry of work as am a teaching assistent but we are all off now so hopefully my brain can stop threating about that and focus on this as i have all my ideas in place it is just getting them on paper with out ripping up my note book
