Okay so a few days ago, I was going through old Google docs folders and found an old HTTYD fanfiction of mine from when I was 12 at least I think I was at the time probably 11. (Oh God it was terrible). But hey I'm 18 now and into writing. So even though I've been out of the fandom for years I decided to rewrite the fanfic. Also this fanfic would not be possible without my dear acquaintance Darkangelx123 on Wattpad I commissioned them to help me write this story and it wouldn't have been as amazing as it turned out without them help.
So also this takes place in an AU where the characters are a bit more like real Vikings where, you know barbican and bloodthirsty. I'm real into the show Vikings (despite how horribly historically inaccurate it is) and always wondered what HTTYD would be like if it was a bit more dark and brooding.
Also this takes place in a universe where How Train Your Dragon 3 never happened. considering I wrote the original fanfic around the same time as the second movie. But anyhow hope you enjoy
Also warning their topics such as rape, Gore, abuse, sexual content, if you feel uncomfortable with any of these things please do not read this
Isle of Burke: 14 Years Ago~
"Damn you! Damn Odien for giving me these cursed children!" A blonde ruff viking lifted his young blonde headed daughter's arm with one hand and threw her down against their wooden floor. She gasped in pain, tears stinging the cuts on her face. The little boy cowering under the table in fear. Their father was a highly respected man in the Hairy Hooligan Clan Tribe, but ever since the death of his beloved wife, caused by his twin children he turned to drink to erase his pain but let out his anger and suffering onto his children. The small girl lifted her face and cried in pain and anguish. "Father please!" she begged. He punched her in the face, hearing a nice crack in the air. The girl grasped her nose in pain, clearly broken. "Do not call me that! I'm not your father, and you are not my children." he slurred, grabbing his horn and drowning more mead into his opened lips. His vision blurred, not seeing the face of his daughter but his wife. The girl held her bloody nose and tried to crawl away but she wasn't quick enough. Her father slammed his horn against the floor, splashes of leftover mead spilled into the wood. He grabbed the leg of his daughter. "No father please! Let me go!" she looked at her brother in desperation. But her brother just looked away and continued to hide from the wrath of his father. He dragged her out to the door where a thunderstorm was hammering down. Cracks of lightning flashed against the sky, rains dropped against the ground, like swords clashing against swords.
Her father threw her outside in the rain, he walked out with a mission. He threw his head back… "Loki!!!! Is this your trick!? Am I being punished for something I didn't commit!? Show yourself coward! You've taken everything from me!" He yelled at the sky in a blind rage, his arms spread out in a come at me motion. Residents start coming out of their homes to see what all this commotion is about. The girl shakely pushed her upper body off from the muddy ground, pain and exhaustion weighing down on her. Her father grabbed her by her hair and forced her face up into the air. She screamed in pain, the warm not bringing any comfort. "Do you need a sacrifice Loki?! Will I be free of my curse if I offer my children to you!" He pulled out an axe from his back and placed the blade against her throat. Fear filled the girl to the brim, salty tears came down in buckets now. "NO!" the boy charged and jumped onto his father and grasped his throat trying to strangle him. Their father gasped in shock and dropped his axe and tried to get his son off him. "Get off me you bastard." the girl saw the axe on the ground, she didn't know what to do. She was frozen to the ground, like dwarves wrapped their chains on her body and made her remain on the spot. She hyperventilated, not able to decide what to do. "Ooff!" the boy gasped when his back slammed against the ground beside his sister. Their father regained his breath and walked towards his children. Citizens gathered around to witness what is happening. He bent down and grabbed his axe, the boy gathered his sister in his arms and glared at their father in pure hatred. Their father smiled and lifted his axe in the air for the final blow but was stopped by another brutish hand. "Enough Sten!" Stoke roared. He squeezed his wrist till he heard a sickening snap. "AHHHH!" Sten screamed in pain, hearing his axe once again fall to the ground. "Damn you!" He struggled against the restraints of their Chief but it was all in vain.
Stoke grunted against Sten's attempts at escape but held his ground. He whistled at his men and they came and took over from restraining Sten. "Take him away!" he commanded. The men nodded and dragged Sten away. Stoke looked to the rest of his people. "Go back inside! Leave these children be!" the people fled back into their homes. Stoke walked slowly over to the twins and kneeled down to their level, giving them a pitiful look. "You're safe now little ones." On that day the sound of rain and thunder, the sound of Thor's hammer against the clouds calmed the little girl, because she believed the gods spared them that day. And that Odien has plans for her and her brother.
~Now: Burke~
This is Burke, a land so cold that it bites the very flesh of your nose, cruel and unforgiving. On this godforsaken island lived two orphan twins, Ruffnut and Tuffnut. These two have been through rough times since the moment they were born. Their mother died when they had them and their drunken father was Thor no's where, when they were forteen. 'Good riddance.' Ruffnut thought. She could never forget the stormy night 14 years ago, she hoped that the bastard died a painful death. Both Ruffnut and Tuffnut lived in a farmhouse at the edge of the woods with their two head dragon Hideous Zippleback Barf and Belch. Even though they were the village idiots they were still highly respected dragon riders. It was the middle of winter here at Burke. The weather was cold and the hostel, food was scarce and many people were trying to survive these harsh conditions but at least they had their dragons. Unfortunately dragons also needed to be fed to, so most of them went off for the winter and only returned in the spring.
It was a cold winter's morning, Ruffnut with her long, tight braided hair was out hunting for a nice plump rabbit. With her bow and quiver securely on her back she walked slowly around the forest to see if she could find rabbit tracks. Puffs of cold air blew out of her mouth in slow pants, her pale face flush against the winter air, the sun shining above the tall trees, yeah it was a good day for hunting. All of a sudden she found fresh footprints in the snow at the edge of the forest. She crouched down and moved her hand above the prints and examined the snow. "They weren't here not too long ago." she mumbled, slowly withdrawing her bow and quiver, pulling back the string in the ready. She followed the trail deep into the woods. After maybe a good tense ten minutes, she stops and pauses for a second hearing the trees around her. For a moment she thought she heard the cries of an injured animal. Feeling more anxious than before, she gripped her bow tight and followed those cries. Ruffnut found herself near a river, cold and crystal clear. She heard the cry again and drew back the string, ready to attack. At the side of the river there was a basket covered in a blanket. Still having the bow and arrow at the ready she cautiously walked to the basket to investigate.
Once she got close enough Ruffnut lifted the blanket with the tip of her arrow. What she saw amazed her. A pale child with raven black hair was hiccuping after crying so much. Ruffnut put away her weapon and slowly picked up the child gently in her arms. The babes eyes fluttered open and stared at her. Ruffnut noticed that the babes eyes were fogged over and cloudy, she had never seen anything like it. "Where in the name of Odien did you come from?" Ruffnit asked in bewilderment. The babe nestled into her neck and stopped crying all together. Ruffnut felt her cold heart melt at the babes touch. She continues to cradle the child into her arms to keep her warm and heads back to her house.
Meanwhile at the farm Tuffnut was fixing the fence to the sheep pen. Belch was helping him mend the fence by holding the large post with it's teeth, whilst Barf was on the lookout for Ruffnut. "Good job Belch." he complimented while hammering down the nails to the fence. He looked up seeing his twin sister emerge from the forest with a frantic look and holding a bundle of blankets in her arms. "What do you got there sis?" he asked. "Get a washcloth and a bucket of milk!" Ruffnut ran into the house with fear in her eyes, both Tuffnut and their dragon knew something was wrong. He follows closely behind her into the house, more curious than worried. Ruffnut runs over to the fireplace and lays the child down beside it. Hoping the heat would warm up her cold body. Tuffnut looks over her shoulder, shocked at what his sister brought into their house. The babe fussed and screamed in discomfort. "You want to tell me where you got this from?" Tuffnut growled, looking at this infant as another mouth to feed. Ruffnut placed a hand on the babes chest, hoping to calm it down. "I found it abandoned in the forest." Tuffnut's eyes widened in horror. "So you just thought it'd be a good idea to bring it home? You know why it was left in the forest." Tuffnut tried to make his sister see sense. But Tuffnut didn't have to remind Ruffnut. She knew why it was abandoned. In Viking tradition, when a child is born deformed, crippled or sickly it was customary for the parents to bring it to the forest and let the gods decide whether it lives or dies. "Shut up and hand me the milk and cloth!" she says sternly, never taking her eyes off the babe. Tuffnut grunted but complied, he walked away to get the milk and cloth knowing deep down in his heart that this was a bad idea. He got back to find his sister on the fathers old chair, calming the child to sleep. "Finally! Thanks for taking so long to get the milk idiot. The poor thing's starving." she growled, trying not to wake the child again.
Tuffnut placed the milk and cloth beside his sister and glared. "You realize that you have to put that baby back where it came from. Right?" Tuffnut crossed his arms, waiting for his sister's reply. Ruffnut didn't listen and placed the milk soaked cloth in between the babes lips. "Were not abandoning it… again!" Ruffnut held the baby tighter in her arms. "Ruffnut! That baby is going to face something worse than death. She will be ridiculed, an outcast! Least with its death it will enter Valhalla and drink ale at Odin's hall." Tuffnut was getting frustrated, trying to get through his baby sister's thick skull. The baby burped, making Ruffnut laugh and pinch it's little cheek. "That's a good one." she cooed. Tuffnut threw his arms up exasperated, walking to the other side of the room. Ruffnut smiled, falling more deeply in love with the baby. "Freya." Tuffnut stopped in his tracks. "Freya must've wanted me to find this baby… to raise it." She continued while stroking the baby's hair. Tuffnut looked at her like she was mad, before he could say anymore a horn bellowed in the air. "They're calling us to the great hall…" he mumbled, looking out the window. "Another sign! Tuffnut you must know what today is!?" How could Tuffnut forget, today is the day they bless and welcome the new infants and dragons of this year. Tuffnut looked at his sister and the baby, he has never seen his sister so happy. Even though they fight and bicker a lot, he still loves her and wants to see her happy. He sighed and walked over to the two and knelt down on the arm of the chair. "I may not agree with what you are doing… but I'll support you. But you have to know that you have to get the blessing from the Chief." he said, looking straight into Ruffnut's eyes without blinking.
Ruffnut scoffed. "Hiccup will approve. His father would have abandoned him the way that he was before. But he didn't and now Hiccup's a dragon rider and tamed a Night Fury and the Chief of Burke. He will give his blessing." she said confidently, adjusting her hold of the baby. "Here let me." Tuffnut indicated to her to pass the baby. Ruffnut was hesitant at first but passed it to Tuffnuts arms. He gently got up from the ground with the small bundle. He bounced the baby a bit, the fire light giving her a shining glow. "So do we even know if this baby is a boy or a girl?" Tuffnut asked while removing some of the blanket to find out himself. He groaned. "It's a girl." Ruffnut sniggered. The baby started to get a little fussy, so Tuffnut placed back the blankets and continued to bounce her up and down. "A name?" Ruffnut thought long and hard and took a quick glimpse of the baby girl's hair. "Raven… her name is Raven."
