It took 20 minuets to get to the Coles on the outskirts of town parking up she was surprised at how busy it was given it was only half 9. after finding a parking space that wasn't next to twats that had parked over the line, dumped the cart in the middle of the small space or her real pet hate pulled a small car so far forward you couldn't see it, especially if they were between 2 huge cars that had their trunks sticking out or bikes using the bays when there was a perfectly good bike park just a few yards up the car park.
Walking in Kate picked up a basket, with a basket she could only get the few bits she needed where as if she had a trolly then she was more than likely to fill it and before she knew it she would spend way more than she needed or intended.
"so, bread?" Mike smiled starting to walk towards the bakery
"No. We don't feed the ducks bread do we girls"
"it makes them go -," she said imitating a loud explosion with sound effects
"Aimee" Kate sighed rolling her eyes at how dramatic her 6-year-old
"no, it makes them poorly" Sovay smiled "come on I'll show you what's bestest " she continued taking mikes hand dragging him in the direction of the freezers
"umm okay" he half smiled turning to look at Kate for some back up.
Watching Kate smiled trying not to laugh before following along.
Sovay lead Mike to the freezer section. "we feed them frozen peas and sweetcorn don't we mummy" she smiled turning to look at Kate
"among other things yes" Kate smiled reaching in to the freezer pulling out a small bag of the economy peas and sweetcorn. "right come on then, let's go feed some duckies" she smiled
Once through the checkouts they headed back to the car.
"right breakfast time" she smiled pulling round to the Maccas drive through that was next door. "what do you want?" she asked turning to Mike.
"I'll have a brekkie burger, if that's okay?" he smiled not wanting to take advantage.
"sure. And a coffee" she grinned watching as the
"what else" Mike smiled
Watching as the car in front pulled forward. Ordering Mike his breakfast burger with a coffee, the girls their pancakes with Nutella with a apple juice and herself an omelette wrap with a hash brown.
Thankfully by the time she had paid and made her way to the collection window all the food was ready. Taking it from the window she passed everything over to Mike so she could drive off and not hold up the rest of the cars that were behind her.
"we can eat this when we get to the park" she smiled pulling round and back on to the main road.
It was a short drive to the park and thankfully with it being still early there were still some places to park. Parking under a large tree so the car didn't get too hot from the sun.
"right, we will eat breakfast and then go and find the ducks and give them theirs okay" Kate smiled as they got out of the car.
They managed to find a empty picnic bench under a tree overlooking the lake. Pulling the food from the bag Kate smiled as Mike placed the drinks down. Taking her coffee from the cardboard holder she took a deep sip. It wasn't the best coffee in the world especially as it wasn't very hot, it also tended to be quite sweet and bitter at the same time which was an enigma in its self but somehow Maccas managed it
Placing the girls' hotcakes out on the table with their apple juice she sat down opposite them next to Mike. Unwrapping her omelette, she smiled taking a bite in to it she smiled. It wasn't the best she had but then it was only a Maccas so for cheap and convenient breakfast on the go then it was okay. It wasn't the best but it wasn't the worst either.
"everything alright?" Mike asked
"not bad. Yours?" she asked
"as good as a Maccas burger can be" he smiled taking a sip of his coffee. "this coffee on the other hand needs work. Do you want a proper coffee?" he smiled indicating to the little shop that was just up the path.
"okay" She smiled picking up all the rubbish stuffing it in to the bin. It was tough as it was starting to over flow but she managed to get it in without knocking any other rubbish out and without hers falling out.
Watching as Mike walked to the little kiosk, she pulled out the 3 sand castle buckets she had packed and tipped the mix of sweetcorn and peas she had brought that morning in along with some seed and cooked rice she had left over from the previous evenings take away. Well, the one minus the curry sauce.
Mike returned with 2 coffees handing Kate hers she smiled handing the girls a bucket each
"who's the third bucket for?" Mike asked
Grinning slightly Kate smiled
"you?" Mike grinned
"hell yes. I'd come and feed them every day whilst these monsters were at school if I could". She said holding her bucket close
"okay whatever floats your boat" he grinned
Walking round the pond Kate stood at the edge chucking in the treats she had brought. It was funny watching the ducks lap up the food, their beaks tapping along the water. It was like watching a game of hungry hippos in real life.
Tipping the last few bits from her bucket Kate smiled as they continued to walk around the pond. Watching as the girls were running slightly ahead, she felt Mike's snake his arm around her waist pulling her close. Without realising they were soon outside the little ice cream shop in the park where they had spent their first date.
"do you want a drink" he smiled
"go on then. Its thirsty work feeding the ducks"
"I'll be back in a minuet" he smiled as Kate sat on a bench
"mummy can we go and play in the playground?" both girls smiled
"go on then" Kate smiled looking at the playground opposite the café.
She watched as both girls ran over in to the little playground. Leaning back against the bench she turned seeing Mike walk out carrying a tray with four large glasses on covered in cream with chocolate brownies apart from one which the drink was paler and had a doughnut around the straw,
"what are those?" Kate laughed as Mike handed her one with the brownie on top.
"i believe they are called freak shakes" he smiled "where are the girls?" he asked
"in the playground" she smiled "Aimee! Sovay!" she called waving Aimee over.
Aimee came running out of the playground "mummy!" she wailed
"Mike has brought you a drink. What do you say?" Kate smiled
"wow" Aimee said as Mike placed the glass in front of her. Her eyes were as wide as the rim of the glass. "thank you" she said grabbing a spoon off the tray, shovelling the cream in to her mouth.
"where is your sister?" Kate asked standing looking over at the playground her eyes scanning every inch
Aimee shrugged her mouth full of Cream
"Aimee!" Kate said
"i don't know she was on the swing when I was on the slide" Aimee said
Running over to the playground Gate Kate frantically looked at every piece of apparatus. Scanning all along still unable to see where Sovay was. She wasn't in the playground for all she could see.
"SOVAY!" she called walking up along the fence walking back to the table. She was beginning to panic slightly as if she couldn't see Sovay then in her mind there was only one answer.
Sitting on the side of the table she began rummaging through her bag trying to find her mobile as she needed to call the police.
"Kate, Calm down she wont be far" Mike said
"Calm down!" she snapped "Don't tell me to calm down because you have no idea what is like to loose a child" she said...
