TRIGGER WARNING -MISSCARRAIGE AND BABY LOSS.
Slowly coming round Kate blinked her eyes getting accustomed to where she was. She could see she was in a dimly lit room with white-wash walls. Looking around her eyes slowly became accustom to the light. Shifting position as her hip was feeling numb and uncomfortable. She could feel the sheet on top of her was stiff and starched and there was something in her arm that was making it difficult to move.
Stretching out as best as she could she looked across seeing Mike Smiling at her
"Mike?" she said still slightly confused at what was going on
"hey" he said softly leaning in closer sitting on the edge of the bed
"what happened?" she said trying to push herself up
"easy" Mike said helping her. "i don't know, we just found you on the floor in your office." he said softly brushing a hair from her face.
"the girls" she said
"Kate they are fine Nikki is going to pick them up and take them back to hers"
"i need to..." she said trying to slid from the bed but fell back against the pillow
"Kate, you hit your head you need to rest" Mike said helping her to sit up again
Reaching up she could feel the plaster she had on her forehead above her eye and the butterfly stitches underneath.
"Ms McGregor" a cheery young doctor walked in picking up the chart from the end of her bed. looking up at Mike as if he wanted him to leave
"it's fine he can stay" Kate said
"so, we have had your bloods back and we believe you passed out because your blood pressure tanked and your blood sugars were also quite low, that's why we have the drip in."
"so can I go home?" she asked hopefully sitting up
"afraid not. Given the fact you have a head injury and that you were unconscious when you were found, we want to keep you in just over-night to be on the safe side." The doctor smiled. "your bloodwork did show something else." he paused looking down at his notes.
"oh " Kate looked up
"your bloods showed you could be pregnant" the doctor smiled "we would need to do a scan to confirm that. Which we can sort out now"
"what" Kate said looking over at Mike they had always been careful.
"as I said we need to do an ultrasound to confirm" the doctor smiled pulling over a portable ultrasound scanner.
Squeezing some gel on to Kates stomach the doctor began running the probe across looking at the screen. Pressing some of the buttons he tried to get a better look at the screen.
"i am just going to talk to a colleague" he said turning the screen away from view
"what's wrong" Kate said trying to get a glimpse of the screen
"nothing I just need to check something" the doctor smiled
Mike reached out giving Kates's hand a squeeze. "it's going to be fine" he said softly as the doctor returned
"this is Dr Jones she is the on-call OB consultant"
"Hi Kate" Dr Jones smiled sitting at the seat in front of the ultrasound moving the probe across Kates's abdomen again. "so could you just confirm when your last period was" she said looking at the screen
"i umm" Kate said trying to think back "It must have been about3 months maybe 4 "she said
Replacing it back next to the scanner Dr jones handed Kate some blue tissue to wipe the gel off her stomach.
"so, after looking at your scan myself I have to agree with Dr Baileys diagnosis. I am sorry but it does look like it isn't developing as it should, I am afraid there is no heartbeat which we would expect at this stage."
"what... what do you mean?" Kate stammered
"it's what we call a silent Miscarriage." Dr Jones gave a sympathetic smile. "more commonly it's called a Missed Miscarriage"
Leaning back against the pillow Kate blinked back the tears. She didn't know which way to look. She couldn't look at the doctor who was talking her through the operation, and she couldn't look at Mike because she knew if she did, she would just cry.
"I'll let you get some rest and I will check back in later. And if you have any questions please just ask" Dr jones smiled softly standing up from her seat.
Pulling the sheet right up, Kate curled up right down under the covers. Her hand falling over her stomach. How could she not have known that she was pregnant? Trying to get comfy was a little difficult with the drip line in her left arm and also being in one of the awful hospital gowns that did up at the back
"I'm just going to get a coffee and I'll let Nikki and the girls know what's going on" Mike said softly standing from the hard plastic seat. "do you want me to get you anything?"
Shaking her head, she rolled over facing away from him.
"i won't be long" he said softly bending down kissing her genteelly on the top of her head. Sighing softly as she pulled the stiff sheet around her tighter around herself, he made his way out. Turning at the door he looked in watching as she pulled her knees right up curling up in to a ball, he could hear her soft sobs as he walked down the corridor.
Returning several moments later he placed a bag and a take away cup on the little table. He placed a second bag on the bottom of the bed watching as she sat up slightly.
"i thought you might want this; it is only from the shop downstairs but it's better than the gowns" he smiled pulling out long white nightdress. It had short capped sleeves and little pink rosebud detailing around the neck line."i know it's a little old fashioned but it's all they had in the shop.
"it's fine" Kate half smiled taking it from him dropping it in front of her.
"and I know you said you didn't want anything but I thought you might want a hot chocolate" he said pulling the takeaway cup from the holder.
Taking the cup from him she held it close she could feel the heat coming up from the lid and the smell of the rich chocolaty drink.
"and I also got you this" he pulled out a tray from the bottom of the bag. "its just a baked Potatoe with some slaw and cheese but you need to eat" he said placing it on the table with a plastic fork
Opening the box Kate pushed the potato with the fork, she wasn't in the mood to eat really. Picking at it she picked up the smallest amount she nibbled on it. she didn't really feel like eating but she knew Mike wouldn't let it lie until she had eaten at least some dinner.
"did you speak to Nikki? Are the girls alright?" she asked
"yes, and yes the girls are fine. Nikki said she was going to take them to Maccas for dinner which they seemed delighted at." he smiled "now eat" he smiled sitting on the chair tucking in to a portion of chips.
"how come you get chips and I get this" she grinned
"well If it gets you to eat something I suppose we could swap he said placing his tray on the table and taking her potato.
"thank you" she said picking up one of the chips nibbling on it. Slowly she munched through the chips. Sliding from the bed she gripped on to the drip walking over to the bathroom grabbing the nightdress Mike had brought as she went past
She returned moments later having managed to change in to the nightdress. Sitting back on the bed she pulled the sheets right up.
"i best go, let you get some sleep" Mike smiled gathering up all the rubbish
"stay, please" she whispered "at least till I fall asleep" she whispered looking up in to his eyes.
Sitting on the edge of the bed he carefully put his feet up wrapping his arm around her. Resting her head against his shoulder she closed her eyes and tried to get her mind to switch off and allow her some sleep.
Sighing softly to himself Mike looked down as Kate gently snored, carefully he pulled his arm from around her sliding off the bed. As he did so she stirred but didn't wake. Running his fingers softly through her hair he bent down kissing her softly. Sitting back in the hard plastic chair he tried to find a comfy position to try and get some kip. He just hoped that with time she would be okay.
so hiii, sorry its been almost 3 weeks since i last updated but i have found it so hard to get this chapter to feel right and sound right and on top off that i was still suffering with my allergy attack and then i had a few days work from my agency so its been a bit hectic
i really hope you like this and i hope have done it some justice, i have never had a baby or never been unfortunate to loose one so i dont know if the terminology is right and i have based it on the experience (sort of ) on a comedian i follow on FB who sadly had a silent misscarraige in lockdown 1.0 over here.
on another note i really hope you all in Australia especially those on the east coast in NSW are okay with the floods it looks horrific and i cant believe mother nature and how cruel she is being especially in the last 2 years. stay safe and stay dry . i hope it gets better soon for you x
