Only a Boy Named David
Two days later, it was time to bring Davey home from the hospital. Zach and Ginger had him ready to go, wearing a Gators onesie.
"Looks perfect on him," Zach said with a grin.
Once they had been officially discharged, they placed Davey in his car seat and left the hospital. Ginger had wondered if he would be warm enough with just the onesie, but Zach pointed out that it was the middle of summer and well over ninety degrees outside, so the Gator onesie would be plenty warm.
"This is it, Davey," Zach told his son. "You're coming home." He then got into the driver's seat and started the car, while Ginger sat in the back with Davey.
Davey didn't seem too interested in the outside world. He slept the entire ride back home.
Once they finally arrived, Zach got Davey's car seat out and brought him inside and told him, "Welcome home, Davey."
Davey opened his eyes briefly and then closed them again. The doctor had told them that babies usually don't open their eyes a lot at first because they're not used to the light. And Davey was still curled up in the "fetal position", which they were told was also normal for newborns, until they realize that they have room to stretch out.
Zach and Ginger then showed Davey his nursery. They had turned the extra bedroom into his nursery once they had found out Ginger was pregnant. It was decorated with orange and blue paper and had a lot of Florida gear. Davey would be a Gator fan for sure.
They then settled in. Davey was still asleep, but soon woke up to feed. Once he was satisfied, Zach made a call.
"Hi, Dad!"
"Hi, Zach!"
"We just brought Davey home."
"How are things going?"
"They're going well," said Zach. "Davey doesn't seem too fazed by his new surroundings."
"That's good to know," said Zach's dad.
"Will you call Nanny and tell her that we're home?"
"Sure thing."
Later, they called Ginger's parents and some of their friends as well. Zach and Ginger didn't want any visitors the first day home, as they wanted to be able to adjust and spend time just as a family. Plus, they didn't want to overwhelm Davey so soon after coming home.
That night, when Davey got up and cried, Zach went and got him a bottle. They had decided that he would breastfeed during the day and get formula at night, so they could alternate nighttime feedings and hopefully be able to sleep a little more that way
As soon as Zach had the bottle in Davey's mouth, he got in the rocking chair and told him, "You know, Davey, there's a song I learned as a kid. We used to sing it to your uncle Dave all the time when he was little, because it has his name in it. I'll sing it for you right now."
Zach then started to sing, "Only a boy named David, only a little sling, only a boy named David, but he could pray and sing, only a boy named David, only a rippling brook, only a boy named David, but five little stones he took. And one little stone went into the sling and the sling went round and round. And one little stone went into the sling and the sling went round and round, and round and round and round and round and round and round and round. And one little stone went into the air and the giant came tumbling down."
Once Davey was finished with his bottle, Zach placed him back in his bassinet that had been placed in their room. He and Ginger had figured it would be best to keep his bed in their room during the first few months until he started sleeping through the night.
"Good night, Davey," he said. As he got back into bed, he added, "Night, Ginger."
The next day, Zach went to church alone. Ginger still needed some time to recover, and they didn't want to bring Davey out too much yet until he had gotten his shots.
There was one place they knew they had to take him that day, though. As soon as church was over, Zach and Ginger got Davey in his car seat and they drove over to the cemetery. They felt they needed to introduce Davey to his grandmother and his uncle.
As Ginger carried Davey in his car seat, Zach looked over the plots and said, "Mom, Dave, there's someone you should meet. This is your grandson and your nephew. His name is David. And he was born on Dave's birthday. And I think he looks a lot like Dave, too."
Zach smiled as they left the cemetery. He could feel the presence of both his mom and Dave as he had told them about Davey. Davey may have only been three days old, but he had already captured his parents' hearts. Zach told his son when they got home, "You may be only a few days old, but you are already our entire world. Pretty good for only a boy named David."
As Zach said these words, he could have sworn he saw Davey give a smile. Ginger told him he wouldn't really be smiling for a few weeks, but Zach was sure of what he saw. Davey had smiled. For only a boy named David, this was a special baby.
