Femme Fatale Flannigan

Episode 4: No Happy Ending

As Jaden and Zane continued up the mountain, the slifer seemed concerned about the earlier exchange with Aster. 'So Zane, what was that between you and Aster earlier?' 'Just some good hearted banter between old friends. Well, I use the term friends loosely, but that's rather besides the point.'

At this point, Zane stopped, and grimaced slightly. 'What's wrong?' 'I'm fine Jaden. Just the underground duelling, it's taken a toll on my heart.' 'You're not going to' 'No, I'm not. Not now anyway. I've been advised to quit duelling, but there's something that I have to do first. I just don't know what that is yet. I was rather hoping coming to help Blair out would give me the answer.'

They continued to hike up the steep mountain for many a mile, passing dead trees and wilting plants, until they came to a clearing, where Jesse and Blair were waiting. 'Good of you to drop by.' Jaden readied for a fight, but was pushed back by Zane. 'What do you want Yubel?'

She giggled through Jesse. 'That's simple – I want Jaden to feel all the pain that I have. If that means jacking a few bodies, so be it. I'm not above such tactics.' Zane nodded, understanding clearly. Jaden then stepped up. 'How about a duel right here right now? I'll take you both on!' Jesse laughed, and took the bait. 'Or, you could just duel me Jaden. How about it?'

Jaden didn't speak, but rammed his deck full-force into his academy-standard duel disk. 'Someone's eager isn't he? Well bring it on then. I look forward to making you suffer.' The slifer then looked back at Zane on the sidelines. 'The only way I can purge the darkness from Jesse's heart is beating him. Or at least it's the only way I know how.' A single thumbs up told him everything he needed to know.

Jaden Yuki LP:4000 vs. Jesse Anderson LP:4000

Turn 1: Jesse: 'I think I'll start. I activate the Field spell Advanced Dark.' Once again, the magic circle surrounded the two duellists. 'Then I'll summon Advanced Crystal Beast Sapphire Pegasus (Atk:1800). And he allows me to take my Cobalt Eagle, and place it in my Spell and Trap zone. Then I'll activate Crystal Release. It equips to Pegasus and gives it 800 more Attack (Atk:1800-2600). I end my turn with a face-down.'

Jaden: 'I'm not leaving until I've sorted this mess! I draw. I activate Polymerisation, fusing together Elemental Heroes Clayman and Sparkman to summon the Elemental Hero Thunder Giant (Atk:2400).' 'Nice move. It's a pity it will come to nothing.'

'Try saying that to my Giant's ability. By discarding a card, I can destroy a monster on the field with lower Original Attack than my Giant. Like Sapphire Pegasus.' 'So near and yet so far. I activate Dark Illusion. Because your effect targets a Dark monster, your effect is negated and your monster destroyed.'

Jesse's Trap came in clutch as the Thunder Giant choked under a thick purple cloud, before self-destructing. But Jaden was undaunted. 'It's a good job I still have this monster to set face-down. I'll end my turn there.'

Jesse: 'I draw. I'll summon Advanced Crystal Beast Emerald Tortoise (Atk:800). Sapphire Pegasus, attack his face-down monster with Sapphire Dark Horn.' What Jesse expected here was a thick wall to protect Jaden's points. Instead he got a nasty surprise (Wroughtweiler Def.:1200).

'You know what they say about man's best friend. Well Wroughtweiler's mine. When he's destroyed, I get back a Polymerisation and Elemental Hero Clayman.' 'You always did care about your stupid cardboard more than you did anybody else.' 'You know that isn't true Jesse. You want to know why I'm so close to my cards? Because that's how I've met anyone in my life. Including you Jesse. Or has Yubel told you to forget that as well?'

Jesse just laughed. 'The worst day of my life. Because that's the day that I got set up, only to be let down again.' By the end of the sentence, Jaden firmly heard Yubel speaking. 'Leave Jesse and Blair out of this. They've done nothing wrong.' 'But Blair's my friend. Besides, tormenting you is fun. It's only what I've been feeling the past decade.'

'Anyway, where was I? Oh yes, I was just about to tear into you with Emerald Tortoise. Emerald Dark Cutter!' The corrupted Crystal withdrew into his shell, and spun up, firing off shell shards which slammed into Jaden, taking his breath away (Jaden LP:4000-3200). 'When my Tortoise attacks, he switches to Defence mode (Def.:2000). Not that it's much consolation to you. I'm already looking forward to next turn. For now, I'll throw a face-down.'

Jaden: 'I don't want to hurt you Jesse, but if it's what I have to do then I'll do it. I draw. I summon Elemental Hero Clayman (Atk:800). Then I'll activate Metamorphosis. This turns my Clayman into Elemental Hero Clay Guardian (Def.:2800).' 'So you found yourself a wall then? Congratulations.'

'Well this wall has a nasty surprise. When it's summoned, you lose 200 Life points for every card on your field. I count five. Patrol Penalty.' Clay Guardian fired his shield at the air, creating a strong gust which slammed Jesse hard (Jesse LP:4000-3000).' 'That stung slightly. Why not try to hit me harder Jaden?' He had no means to do this however. 'I'll just end my turn with a face-down.'

Jesse: 'It's a shame, I thought you'd be a challenge. I draw. I hope you don't think you're safe behind that Clay Guardian. Because you're never safe! Just like I wasn't. Difference is of course, I survived. You on the other hand… I summon Crystal Beast Amethyst Cat (Atk:1200). Then I'll equip it with Mage Power. So now it gains 500 Attack for every Spell or Trap on my field (Atk:1200-3200). Oh, and she can attack you directly by halving the damage. Amethyst Dark Nail!'

'Not if I can help it. I activate Hero Spotlight. Now you're not allowed to attack directly so long as I control an Elemental Hero. So give Clay Guardian your best shot!' Jesse, mind twisted by Yubel's influence, grabbed the apparent opportunity with both hands. 'Fine. Attack Clay Guardian!' But this time, Jaden had outsmarted his foe.

'I activate my other face-down D2 Shield.' 'What!?' 'This Trap card doubles Clay Guardian's Defence during this turn only. So you're about to ram into a brick wall. Or should I say, a clay wall? (Clay Guardian Def.:2800-5600).' Jesse tried frantically to stop the attack, but it was too late, with the Cat slashing away at Clay Guardian, only to be repelled by a firm shield, straight into her controller (Jesse LP:3000-600).

'You'll pay for that!' 'Try me.' Jesse just smirked. 'Happily. I'll set two and end my turn (Amethyst Cat Atk:3200-4200, Clay Guardian Def.:5600-2800). Next turn though, you're going to be toast!'

Jaden: 'Remind me not to give you a next turn then. I draw. That's not bad – I'll summon Elemental Hero Bubbleman (Atk:800). Then I'll activate Pot of Greed, to grab two more cards. Both of which I'll use now. First off, I activate Bubble Shuffle.'

'Didn't know you were becoming a dancer. To be fair you're probably better at that than duelling.' 'Rich coming from someone so far behind.' 'Oh if only you knew.' 'Well I do know! Bubble Shuffle switches your Cat to Defence mode along with Bubbleman (Bubbleman Def.:1200, Amethyst Cat Def.:3400). Then I can tribute Bubbleman for Elemental Hero Bladedge (Atk:2600).'

'Nice try, but I'll just activate Silent Spirit. This inhabits your Bladedge and forces it to attack any monster I choose. I'll give you three guesses.' 'I don't even need one. But I will need this – Skyscraper.' The field remained the same for Jesse, but huge buildings rose up around Jaden. 'You want to play games? Well here's where we play. Bladedge, attack that Cat with Slice and Dice Attack.'

Misunderstanding Skyscraper's effect, Jesse still looked remarkably confident. 'Bring it on idiot.' 'Don't forget, Bladedge gets a boost here even if your monster is in Defence mode.' This realisation came too late for Jesse to do anything about it, as the cat got creamed (Jesse LP:600-400). 'I end my turn with a face-down.' 'You'll pay for that!' 'Just like you'll pay for hurting my friends.'

This intensity from Jaden surprised Zane. (I've never seen Jaden like this. He really has grown). This then seemed to stir something inside of Zane. (I think… I know what I came back for. I was looking for some closure. If I'm going to die, I need the perfect duel first). He then looked round, and saw Blair running off, as quietly as possible as to not alert Jaden. 'Whatever she's looking for I can't let her have.' He then ran after her, Jaden still totally unaware.

Jesse: 'I draw. I activate Needlebug Nest. This sends the top five cards of my deck to the graveyard. Then I'll activate Dark Hole, to destroy all monsters on the field.' The gravitational pull inevitably drew all the monsters into it, as Jaden could only look on. And Jesse wasn't even close to done yet. 'Now I activate Rainbow Gravity. Because I have seven Crystal Beasts with different names in my graveyard, I can summon the Rainbow Dark Dragon from my deck (Atk:4000).

Yubel, still inhabiting Jesse, then giggled. 'Oh Jaden, you were so close. But now it's time for you to be put out of your misery. Dark Rainbow Refraction!' 'I activate A Hero Emerges. Now you have to choose a card from my hand. If it's a monster, I can summon it.' 'Yeah yeah, I know.' 'You've only got a choice of two.' 'I'll choose… the one on the left!'

Jaden looked at it, and shrugged. 'Ok, I'll summon Hero Kid (Def.:600). And when he's Special summoned, he brings out two of his buddies (Def.:600)x2.' 'Fine, I'll just roast one of those little brats then.' There was little that the Hero Kid could do as it was simply torn apart by the power of the Dragon, as Jesse glowed purple. 'With every single monster I destroy, my power increases! My hold can only get stronger! And soon enough, the entire WORLD will feel my power!'

Further up the mountain

Yubel had nearly reached the top of the mountain, but before she could reach the penultimate ledge, Blair started resisting. Inside, she was crying, desperate for answers. 'What are you doing? I don't want to destroy the world! I just want a friend.' Yubel giggled at this. 'But I am your friend. It's just that sometimes friends have to do things they don't want.'

'Yeah, like clean up litter or cover when they're bunking off. Not be complicit in uniting 12 dimensions! That's way above and beyond. Never mind what you did to Jesse.' 'I'm sorry, I just get… carried away sometimes.' By now though, Blair didn't believe her possessor. 'I don't want this anymore. We had an agreement not to hurt anybody. You broke that agreement.'

Yubel responded by laughing. 'No Yubel, no. I've had enough of being laughed at, and being ignored, and being walked on, and being laughed at, I've had enough of all of it!' But this time, the spirit wasn't playing around. 'It's a pity – I thought we could be friends. Oh well, I suppose I'll just have to take control of your body!' Yubel then laughed as Blair assimilated into her.

Further down the mountain

Jaden: 'I draw.' He looked at the card, and almost cracked a smile for the first time in the entire sorry saga. 'I'll go ahead and activate Graceful Charity. I'll rip three and throw out these two. Which is perfect for Miracle Fusion! I'll banish the Wildheart and Necroshade I just sent to my graveyard. Give a warm possessed welcome to the Elemental Hero Necroid Shaman! (Atk:1900).'

Seeing this unusual summon caused Jesse to raise an eyebrow. 'Are you mocking me?' 'No, I'm winning. When Necroid Shaman is summoned, he can send your Dragon straight to your graveyard, and replace it with a monster from your graveyard. Shaman Shuffle.' As Jaden thought he'd won however, Jesse had other ideas.

'I activate my face-down Breakthrough Skill. This negates your Shaman's effect, so my Dragon is going nowhere.' Hearing this, Jaden grimaced, knowing that he was in for a big hit next turn. 'I end my turn with this face-down.'

Jesse: 'I draw. I'll activate the effect of Rainbow Dark Dragon. I banish the four Dark monsters from my graveyard, in order to increase it's attack further (Atk:4000-8000). 'Attack and destroy his Necroid Shaman with Dark Rainbow Refraction.'

Seeing the end of everything, Jaden took swift action. 'I activate Damage Diet. I might lose Necroid Shaman, but by halving the damage I'm still alive and kicking.' 'I'm not so sure you'll be in any shape to kick after this.' Jaden's somewhat desperate move saved him from utter annihilation, but didn't save him from a battering as the attack ripped at his uniform (Jaden LP:3200-150). 'I end my turn. You got lucky that turn.'

As the smoke cleared, Jaden was still stood, battered and bruised but still holding strong. 'It's always more fun when they put up a fight. Come on, humour me some more. Before I enact my revenge!' 'Yubel, I don't know why you think that I hurt you deliberately. I sent you away because I wanted to protect you, and I wanted to protect everyone else. I nearly lost everyone around me just thanks to what you were doing.'

'So you sent me away. So you didn't have to see me rot for years. If it wasn't for the light, I would never have returned. But when I did, do you know what I saw? I saw you laughing, joking. You'd forgotten me! So I don't want your words. I just want your body!'

Jaden: 'Well you're not getting! I draw. I activate Pot of Greed, to draw two cards.' Looking at his cars, Jaden looked disappointed. 'I'll end my turn with a face-down.'

Jesse: 'This time, you're done. I activate Fairy Meteor Crush, to pierce through your little mites. Attack' 'I activate Elemental Absorber. All I have to do to stop your Dragon attacking is banish Elemental Hero Shadow Mist from my hand. Now any Dark monsters on your field can't attack.' 'You're a coward! I end my turn.'

Jaden: 'I draw. I'll activate Mirage of Nightmare, and end my turn with a face-down.'

Jesse: 'Your hand is empty, you have 150 Life points, what can you really do? Just give up and join us Jaden.' 'You want to know what I can do? For starters, I can use Mirage to draw four cards.' Jesse saw his card, and laughed. 'It's over Jaden! I activate Dragon's Gunfire! Because I control a Dragon monster, you lose 800 Life points.'

The darkened Dragon roared, before firing off a flaming burst, causing a dust storm from the cold hard ground. 'Heh, should have just taken my offer Jaden. Now, to polish off your friend.' Just then though, the dust cleared, and the Slifer was still there (Jaden LP:150-350). 'How are you still alive? I demand to know!' Jaden just looked into his graveyard. 'Thanks Emergency Provisions, you really saved my butt there. I sent Mirage of Nightmare to the graveyard to gain 1000 points.'

This angered Yubel severely. 'How dare you survive! How dare you have the cheek to survive that! I'll get you next turn.'

Jaden: 'I draw.' He looked at the card, before looking back at Yubel. 'Who said anything about you getting a next turn? I activate Graceful Charity, to draw three cards and discard two. And one of the cards I discarded was Makyura the Destructor. During the turn he's sent to my graveyard, I can activate Trap cards directly from my hand. One like Return from the Different Dimension. It costs me half of my Life points (Jaden LP:350-175), I can bring back my banished monsters (Wildheart Atk:1500, Shadow Mist Atk:1000, Necroshade Atk:1600).'

'Then I'll tribute both my Hero Kids to summon Elemental Hero Bladedge (Atk:2600). But he's not staying, as I activate Fusion Substitute. This allows me to fuse monsters on the field together. I fuse Bladedge and Wildheart together to create the Elemental Hero Wildedge (Atk:2600).

'So what – he couldn't harm my Dragon even if he tried. Although...' He then looked up and saw the Skyscraper still on Jaden's field. But the realisation was a turn late and a dollar short. And Jaden was taking no prisoners. 'From my hand I'll activate another Trap card – Miracle Kids! You know those runts you insulted earlier? Well they're about to be your downfall. For every Hero Kid resting in my graveyard, Rainbow Dark Dragon loses 400 Attack. But most importantly, it's still got higher Attack than Wildedge.'

The spirits of the three Kids in graveyard rose up, and punched the Dragon right between the eyes, blinding it (Rainbow Dark Dragon Atk:4000-2800). 'Wildedge, it's time to bring Jesse back to the light. Exorcise him with Scimitar Slash!' The gruff, shaggy and jagged Hero picked up his sword as his Attack raised (Atk:2600-3600), and cleaved through the neck of the corrupted Dragon, which shed its black skin and shone in its original glory, before vanishing as the dark look faded from Jesse's face (Jesse LP:400-0).

As the dust cleared, Jaden saw Jesse just lay on the ground, no sign of his previous spell. As his friend propped his head up, he awoke. 'Jesse, say something to me.' 'J? That you?' 'It's me Jesse.' 'J… leave.' 'What?' 'Leave me here. Blair needs you. This isn't what she wanted.' 'What do you mean by that Jesse? You're making no sense.' 'Yubel is using her. Zane knows. Ask him.'

'Care to clue me up Zane?' As Jaden turned round, Zane was long gone. 'Hey Zane, where'd you go? Zane!' He then looked up towards the mountain's spire. 'I'll bet he's gone after her.' He then looked down at Jesse. 'You go, I'll catch up. Just… give me a few, ok?' The slifer nodded, before running up the mountain as fast as possible.

Near the top of the mountain

Zane reached a small clearing, clearly designed for mountaineers to rest before the summit, and what he saw there was startling. Blair was clutching her head with both hands, writhing around in agony while her entire body pulsated black. 'Blair, it's Zane. Keep fighting.' After another few minutes of this, she stood up, and turned to the Cyber-style master, eyes dead and glowing purple. 'Why should I keep fighting when I am so close to what I desire?'

Zane responded by activating his duel disk. 'This ends here Yubel.' 'Why would you even try and duel me in… your condition.' He looked down at his chest, and then gave a manic grin. 'You know what they say – if you're going to go out, go out frying them with your Cyber Dragon.' The Devil Arm then unfolded into a duel disk, and Yubel slammed the deck into it. 'I'm going to make sure that you never leave this mountain.'

Blair Flannigan/Yubel LP:4000 vs. Zane Truesdale LP:4000

Turn 1: Yubel: 'I draw. I'll set a monster in Defence mode, then set three and end my turn.'

Zane: 'I draw. I summon Cyber Dragon (Atk:2100). Then I'll add a Cyber Dragon Zwei (Atk:1500). And by revealing the Spell card Power Bond in my hand, Zwei's name becomes Cyber Dragon until turn's end.' 'You opened with a Power Bond? Interesting.'

'Just be thankful that I'm not using it. Zwei, attack her face-down monster.' Zwei charged up an electrical attack, firing straight into the hidden monster (Shaddoll Dragon Def.:0), destroying it. 'When my Dragon is flipped, it returns Cyber Dragon to your hand.'

As the mechanical dragon returned, Zane grimaced, seeing that he was in for a long fight. 'I'm in a bit of a rush, so I'll activate Time Fusion. If I'm willing to banish a card from my hand, I can Special summon a Fusion monster during my next Standby phase, but it can't attack on the turn it's summoned. I'll end my turn there.'

Yubel: 'Oh you make it so easy. So easy to hate you! I draw. I activate Polymerisation, fusing together Shaddoll Beast and Qadshaddoll Keios to Fusion summon El Shaddoll Construct (Atk:2800). And because Beast and Keios were sent to the graveyard, I get benefits. Beast draws me another card, while Keios mills another monster, so Construct gains Attack equal to that monster's level multiplied by 100. I'll send Hellshaddoll Void to my graveyard (Atk:2800-3700).'

'And now, attack Cyber Dragon Zwei.' Construct fired wires at the Cyber Dragon, tearing it apart as Zane suffered severely (Zane LP:4000-1800). 'What's wrong – you not feeling well? You could always just let me go. I promie it woun't be painful. Well… not too painful anyway.' 'I'd rather die than let you win.' 'It's a shame – I think we could have worked together. Oh well. I end my turn.'

Eventually, with the will of wanting the perfect final duel, Zane dragged himself up to his feet, struggling to find the strength to stay upright. And yet, he continued to fight. 'You'll have to do more than that to take me down Yubel. The kid gloves are off now. If it means getting Blair away from your grasp...' He then grinned madly. '...I'll happily rip into her!'

Zane: 'It's my turn, I draw. During my Standby phase, the effect of Time Fusion activates. So welcome out a nightmare in steel – Cyber End Dragon (Atk:4000).' 'You do realise Construct has no issue tearing down your Dragon? It's such a shame as well, it's so shiny. A bit like you once were.'

'Very funny. But I'm sure that you'll soon regret your confidence. For now I activate Different Dimension Capsule.' A sarcophagus then magically appeared next to Zane. 'I'm sure that with Blair's memories you know how this works, but a little refresher course for you. I can choose any card from my deck and place it in the capsule face-down. In two turns, the capsule opens, and my card is added to my hand.'

Yubel laughed at the sheer thought of Zane's card reaching resolution. 'You're presuming you're going to survive two turns. I beg to differ.' 'It's a good job I didn't ask you then. For now I summon Cyber Valley (Atk:0). But why stop at 1? Because with Machine Duplication, I can summon two more from my deck (Atk:0)x2. I end my turn with a face-down.'

Yubel: 'To think, that even the mighty Zane is scared of me.' 'Sorry Yubel, but you're wrong again. You've mistaken caution for fear. I have no fears left. My worst nightmare has already come true.' The mighty demon was not too pleased to hear this. 'You humans are so… boring. With your rules and your manners, you're so dull. I'll be glad to eradicate you all! I draw. Construct, attack Cyber End Dragon with Wired Whiplash.'

Just as the seemingly outmatched Construct was about to be torched, Yubel revealed its party piece. 'When Construct battles a monster which was Special summoned, that monster is destroyed instantly.' The wires came from the graceful-looking monster, strangling the life out of the mighty Dragon and destroying it.

'Did that hurt? Did it leave you… breathless?' Yubel laughed again, but Zane barely moved a muscle. 'What's wrong – had enough?' 'Of you talking, yes.' 'You're hilarious, I must say. A real clown! I end my turn with a face-down.'

Zane: 'My turn. I activate Fusion Conscription. This card demands that I reveal a Fusion monster in my Extra deck, and then add a material for that monster to my hand. So I'll reveal Cyberdark Dragon and add Cyberdark Horn from my deck to my hand. Then I'll activate this copy of Pot of Greed I've been holding onto, to draw two more. I'll lay them both face-down. Over to you.'

Yubel: 'I draw. I'll lay a monster face-down, then I'll attack Cyber Valley with Construct.' 'This time you're out of luck. I activate Cyber Valley's effect. By banishing it, I can end the Battle phase and draw a card.' 'Stop stalling! I end my turn with a face-down.'

Zane: 'It's my turn.' As Zane drew his card, his Different Dimension Capsule returned. 'As it's been two turns, I can remove the card from my Capsule and add it to my hand. I'll then use the 2nd effect of Cyber Valley. I can banish it and another Cyber Valley to draw two more cards.'

'Now I'll activate a Field spell – Cyberdark Inferno.' Flames spouted from the ground as the card was activated, forcing Yubel forward to avoid the burning fire. Eventually they were totally surrounded, as the sky darkened further heralding the arrival of night. The field was now lit up only by Zane's new card, which his foe was highly unimpressed by.

'So you learned how to make fire. Big deal.' 'It will be after I activate my face-down Samsara Dogma. This turns every monster in my graveyard into whatever type I choose. And I choose Dragon.' 'Changing that won't help you!' 'You want to bet? I activate Polymerisation, to fuse together the Cyberdark Horn, Keel, and Edge in my hand for Cyberdark Dragon (Atk:1000).'

'When Cyberdark Dragon is summoned, he equips a Dragon-type monster from my graveyard, gaining it's Attack. And with Dogma, I have a few targets. I think Cyber End Dragon will do nicely.' Tendrils dropped from the Dragon into the graveyard, before hoisting up Cyber End Dragon to equip to itself (Atk:1000-5000).

'Additionally, for every monster in my graveyard it gains 100 more Attack for every monster in my graveyard (Atk:5000-5400). Yubel was still unconcerned, with the effect of Construct still at hand. So the shock can be imagined when Zane declared 'Cyberdark Dragon, attack El Shaddoll Construct with Dark Cyber Stream.'

'Do you really take me for such a fool? It's a pity, I kind of wanted to play with you longer. Construct's ability destroys your Special summoned monster.' But she then saw Zane grin. 'I take you for no fool Yubel, but you clearly do me. Cyberdark Inferno protects my monster from card effect destruction. I hope I've not disappointed you too much.' With no time to react to the attack, Yubel could only watch Construct be split by the powerful blast (Yubel LP:4000-1400).

Zane stood stoic after the attack, as Yubel growled. After however, he slumped to the ground clutching his chest. 'You won't beat me that easily. I activate my face-down Iterative War. Due to this, because we both have 2000 or less Life points, our Life points both become 6000.' 'You're giving me Life points? What game is this you're playing?' 'I'm playing no games. But let's face it, you're not going to last until the finish. The only natural conclusion… will be your life!'

Yubel then fell to the ground screaming, as Blair fought for control of her own body again. 'I'll never let you in! The prophecy will be fulfilled!' Shortly afterwards, Jaden arrived, only to see Zane and Yubel both down, the fiend screaming in Blair's battered body, and Zane struggling to breathe, his clothes torn by the attack from Construct. With both down, the reality hit Jaden. 'This isn't a battle for victory, this is a battle for survival!'

Blair vs. Zane will be continued in The Armageddon Factor
