Okay so remember when the group flew off into the distance with their bison? Turns out they flew onto a tribe ship, one that moves by sails rather than water benders. Pakku and some other water tribe members were onboard. It was still the morning so everybody got to relax, everybody was on the deck basically just hanging around.
Ryan managed to fix DAVE too. The eyebot started to hover, most the body has functioning. Most of it.
"Alright DAVE. Let's check your vocal circuits. Say description," said Ryan.
DAVE responded with, "D*ck sucker. Crap I can't say it."
"S**t," Ryan cursed, "Just don't say description until I can find a way to fix you properly."
"Acknowledged. Hey when you were fixing me up you seemed to have enabled some audio files stored in my hard drive. You want to hear them?"
"Maybe later." The Californian sat down, tired from his hard work on a floating toaster. He took a sigh of ease. Ryan took a bottle of purified water from his backpack and started drinking it.
"So, Ryan, if you're going to travel with us we might as well get to know you," said Katara.
The wastelander stopped drinking. "Well, what did you want to know?" Ryan asked.
"What's your world like?" Aang asked.
"Well there's people with 5 arms walking about, people eat each other to fly, and we all live in a dome."
"Really?" Sokka asked almost fascinated. Momo chirped confused aswell.
"I'm kidding! Really, it's hell over there. Civilisation has ended, everybody's killing each other for survival, there's monsters lurking about, there's a whole lot more to talk about. I could go on ranting on and on about my world. What you need to know is that it's the apocalypse, and we're a whole lot more advanced than you even with society gone. There's no benders, nobody who could control the elements like you guys. Spirits don't exist at all either."
"Wow. That's an awful lot to take in," said Aang, "How did civilisation end?"
"Well all I know is that all the nations turned on each other centuries ago, this was because the world's oil supply was running out. The United States, the former country I live in, I think had a solution but kept it to itself because of greed and corruption. Next thing everybody knew was that the bombs dropped, nuclear bombs, powerful enough to decimate a city. Nobody knew who launched first. But it doesn't really matter now."
"Sounds like you people have it rough," said Katara, "So enough of all of that. What's your story?
"Well, my full name is Ryan Avery Devon, I'm 16 and a scavenger. I grew up in the city of Redding, NCR/New California Republic territory if you're wondering where I'm from. My father was an Elite Ranger and my mother was a doctor for the Followers, my sister's also a soldier. I never saw my father much since he was on military business all the time. It was kinda the same with my mom, except she always found time for me and my sister. We both got a decent education. Weren't many schools back in the city since most of them were ruined or turned into something else. One day, my father disappeared on a mission 6 years ago, so did the other platoons he was with. My mom died from an unknown plague months later."
"I'm sorry to hear that," said Katara.
"After that, my sister joined the army, she was 16 at the time, I was just 10. We moved around a lot in California, learned a lot of skills like using a gun, speaking mandarin etc. I'm currently residing in New Vegas. Scavenge for a living because I have to get money for myself too," Ryan finished ranting, "Anything else you want to know?"
"Yeah. What's the NCR?" Sokka questioned.
"It's the closest thing to a nation my continent has, might not be as big as your nations but a nation is a nation. Has a working government, it's own military, even it's own currency! Problem is that there's lot's of corruption within the government and the country is unfortunately going down an imperialist path. But it's my country, and it looks like the best hope for the wasteland in my opinion even with it's multiple flaws. My father fought for it, my sister is fighting for it. It has a lot of people building the country," everybody around him was fascinated, even DAVE since he has no idea what it was like outside the vault. "Anything else you wanted to know?" He asked again.
"Yeah, about your friend? Who exactly is she?"
"Well her name is East, she calls herself that because she's from the east. All I know is that she's a tribal who's tribe was annexed by Legion forces, at least I assume since she has lots of hatred towards them, never actually know what her backstory is or her real name. But she's pretty nice sometimes, mostly cautious but she sometimes goes mental when she's killing Legion soldiers."
"What exactly is 'Legion'?"
"Well they're trying to rebuild a dead empire that existed thousands of years ago from the other side of the world. They're slavers, raiders, rapists, cannibals, they're a messed up society. Raise little boys into soldiers and girls into breeders. Strip people of their identities and make it something to be proud of." Everybody looked at him in horror. The Fire Nation was bad enough but then they hear a society worse than them.
"I think we've heard enough," said Aang trying to change the subject, "Let's hear DAVE's story."
"I am an AI. I was the overseer of a vault who was responsible of over 1000 residents. I was responsible for multiple human right violations which resulted in the death of all inhabitants, that was almost 200 years ago. Now I'm a floating toaster with a laser penis who is trying to help out a wastelander search for his friend," DAVE explained.
"Okay?" Everybody said in unison confusingly. Momo chirped confused again.
"Enough about us. What about you guys?"
(Because I'm tired of writing speech I might as well put it into text)
The group explained to Ryan that Sokka and Katara are from the southern water tribe, reduced to a small village. The siblings lost their mother to the fire nation and their dad's fighting in the war.
Aang was a different story. Turns out he ran away a hundred years ago because he just wanted to be a normal kid and not be the Avatar. He was frozen in ice along with his bison, Appa, and woke up out of time. So turns out he's 'The Last Airbender'. Sounds like a good name for a TV show or movie.
Momo was just an animal they found in an abandoned temple, nothing much about his backstory.
Pakku entered from bellow deck, "Enjoying the ride?"
"Well it's my first time being on a boat," said Ryan, "Not exactly how I imagined my first time on here but-"
"First time? Do they have sea travel in your world," asked Sokka?
"Well yes but it's not that common. I've seen multiple people from all around the world get to what was left of the states but sea travel isn't easy anymore. Humans used to easily get around the world, right before everything went to s**t."
"What exactly is he talking about?" Pakku questioned.
"Oh he's from another world," said Aang.
"That explains it." Pakku said, unmoved from the news.
"Wait you're fine with it?" Ryan asked.
"Of course. I mean theres the spirit world there may be a possibility of others wouldn't there?" Pakku replied. It made sense to everyone.
Ryan continued drinking his water.
Aang asked something that has been bothering him since the North Pole, "Hey Ryan? Back at the north pole, you killed so many people without even caring. How do you manage taking so many human lives?"
Ryan stopped drinking, he looked at Aang. A silent pause occurred.
Ryan broke it replying, "Well it's just how I was raised, I'm from a world where death is all over. Sometimes I try killing as a last resort because I believe there has to be some hope of the old world left in people, but that's just a lie I keep telling myself. Killing is more of a last resort for me.."
"What about back with Zuko? You almost didn't hesitate to kill him," Katara mentioned.
"Okay that was different. He burned my face. I mean look at me!"
"It looks kinda cool," said DAVE, "Have you even looked in a mirror or a reflection lately?"
Ryan looked at his offline pip-boy, he stared into the black reflection of himself. To be honest it did look kinda cool. "I guess I went a bit out of control. The wasteland gets to me sometimes, it's like it can preserve the rage of a human being. But I do look cool though," he smiled.
"So. Ryan, what do you think of our world?" Pakku asked.
"Well I have to admit it's strange being in a world where there's no radiation in the air. It's a beautiful place despite the war. Shame my world couldn't have stayed like this."
"Well I'm sure it'll get better, right?" said Katara.
Ryan scoffed, "You haven't even seen my world. Nearly everything there can kill you. It'll probably take centuries until we at least get our s**t together."
"I think we should change the subject," said Aang. He was sure that everybody heard enough about Ryan and DAVE's world.
"Well I'm gonna go pee. Do you guys have a bathroom on this thing?" asked Ryan.
"We have a bucket," said Pakku.
"Eh, better than nothing I guess." Ryan walked off below deck.
MIDNIGHT
Aang's eyes shot open in fear. The Avatar looked at his surroundings as he laid on his hammock. It was the dead of night, everybody was fast asleep. DAVE was offline and laid on a crate but Ryan was surprisingly awake reading a magazine or a book, his pip-boy light was on.
"D'you have a bad dream, Aang?" Ryan asked.
"Y-yeah. Why are you still awake?" Aang replied, still a bit shook from the nightmare.
"I'm trying to find out how to fix DAVE's vocal circuits. Don't want him to keep saying d*ck sucker instead of description all the time. What was your bad dream about?"
"Well I was being attacked by... me, in the Avatar state," Aang replied. Ryan put his magazine down and looked at him.
The wastelander sighed, "I've heard this many times before."
"You have?"
"Yes. East has had multiple nightmares about that. It usually works by talking about where it's coming from, well at least in this situation. What are you worried about?"
Aang ignored his question and got out of his hammock, "I'm gonna get some air." He walked up to the deck. Ryan shrugged and went back to reading his magazine.
Katara woke up shortly after. She looked at Ryan, "What's going on?"
"Aang had a nightmare. I think yo should go talk to him, something's bothering him." Katara got out of her hammock and walked upstairs. The Californian sighed, he unequipped his pip-boy and went to sleep.
THE NEXT MORNING
Everybody was on deck, the whole group was about to depart from the ship. Pakku gave Katara an amulet carrying water from the oasis back at the North Pole. Aang was gifted with some waterbending scrolls. And Sokka... he wasn't given anything, Pakku just said to him, "Take care son."
Ryan and DAVE weren't given anything either, but there wasn't anything to give them so it made sense. Except they weren't given a goodbye or anything at all.
"General Fong is westward at an Earth kingdom base, he will provide you an escort to Omashu," the waterbending master mentioned.
Before Appa and the gang left they waved goodbye. Then went off into the distance.
As Appa flew, Ryan asked, "So. D'you guys talk last night?"
"Yes. Aang's worried about himself in the Avatar state, the destruction it can cause," Katara replied.
"I can see why. You were pretty much Godzilla back there."
"Who?"
"Oh it's just a monster from an old Japanese pre-war movie. A monster emerges from the sea and starts destroying the city." He looked at Aang, "Oh, you won't end up like that. Except you just became a creature that emerged from the sea and started... destroying everything. Wow you just pretty much became Godzilla."
This did not make Aang feel any better.
A FEW HOURS LATER
It was a light breeze up in the air, the bison rushed across the clouds. The whole gang was pretty much bored, they were on the lookout for the base. DAVE wasn't hovering and laid on the saddle doing his calculations on the meaning of life, Ryan fully fixed him along the way.
"What exactly does this base look like?" Asked Ryan, leaning over the saddle.
"Heck if I know," Sokka responded.
"Hey what's up with people of each nation wearing only one colour?"
"It's to show which nation they come from. Don't they have it in your world?"
"No. We wear our own clothing, I wear this colour armour but it doesn't mean everybody in my nation wears it. One colour for one nation has a lot of disadvantages. The fire nation soldiers back in the Pole were wearing black and red, in an ice environment. Not very good camouflage. In the NCR our soldiers wear ivory, camouflages them with the sand since it's a wasteland we live in."
"Sounds like a good tactic, wonder why we don't introduce it to our militaries." Sokka looked over at the ground. His eyes widened and he cried, "There it is!" Everybody else looked over.
The base was surrounded by a white, stone circular wall with a building of sorts in the middle and other structures surrounding the centre. Branches of walls were stretching out into the horizon. Aang landed Appa onto the surface. Everybody dismounted.
A man with a large beard and wearing what looked like a green cape, dark yellowish armour and there seemed to be skulls on his shoulders. Behind him seemed to be a dozen Earth Kingdom soldiers, they were wearing similar clothing besides the cape and skulls and they wore a bowl shaped hat.
"Welcome, Avatar," he said.
"I'm presuming you're Fong," said Aang.
"Yes. You're Avatar Aang along with your Bison Appa, the fearless Sokka, Momo, the mighty Katara, and... who are you people exactly?" He looked at DAVE and Ryan. Some of the soldiers gave weird looks at DAVE.
"I'm Ryan and this is DAVE. He's an eyebot."
"Yes. I am a being with intelligence far superior to a human being," said DAVE, "Also I pretty much vaporised like 6 fire nation crews back at the north pole."
The soldiers looked at him in disbelief, Fong said, "Where exactly are you from?"
Ryan or DAVE didn't know what to say. "S-should we tell them?" Ryan asked Aang.
"I don't really see any harm," the Avatar responded.
"Well I'm from California, DAVE is from underground. We're from another world." One of the troopers chuckled.
"Whatever you say 'otherworldler'. Fong laughed, "Let's go inside. So we can talk more."
The whole gang was inside the building. It was a large hall with pillars holding up the structure on both sides. At the front of the hall was Fong, sitting behind a large desk. The gang, besides DAVE and Ryan sat/knelt on a wide mat. "I see the awesome responsibility of having such a devastating power. You're ready," said the General. Ryan definitely knew why the Earth kingdom was losing this war. What kind of General says 'awesome'?
"Wait what?" Aang was confused.
"With that amount of power you can easily defeat the fire nation and end this war."
"What? But I was only able to do that in the Avatar state," Aang replied, "I can't do this willingly."
"Yes. I am aware. Your arrows and eyes glow and you're able to unleash a dangerous power. With a power such as that we'll end the war in a short amount of time."
"Aang should be able to choose his own destiny," Katara stated, "He shouldn't just have somebody else to choose his fate."
"Let me show you something," Fong and the others looked outside the window of the building. Outside was an infirmary, dozens of wounded soldiers were struggling to walk to it. "Those are the lucky ones. Every day the Fire Nation takes lives. You can stop all of this."
The wastelander didn't trust the guy at all.
"I need to think about this," said Aang.
"Hey. General Fong?" Ryan said.
"Yes?" Ryan provided a description of East and asked if he had saw her. Fong replied with, "No. There hasn't been any children coming through here besides you and your friends."
"Oh. Thanks anyway."
Later that day. The whole group stayed inside one of the barracks. DAVE was outside studying the lives of the Earth soldiers.
"What do you think of Fong?" Katara asked Ryan.
"Why are you asking?"
"Well you didn't seem very fond of him back there."
"Honestly, I think he's an idiot. Trying to control a power he doesn't know how devastating it is. He's doing anything for his own personal gain. My country has better military officers than him. Colonel Hsu, Moore, General Oliver, okay maybe not those last two, but they'd have better tactics than using a kid. It's because of people like Fong so many people have died throughout my world's history, controlling a power they cannot possess."
"Well you do have a point." Aang sat on his bed, wondering if he should take the offer. Katara asked worriedly, "You okay, Aang?"
"No. I don't know if I should accept the General's offer," Aang responded.
"Aang, take my advice. Just don't, you can't trust that guy with such a power," Ryan suggested.
"Honestly, I agree with Ryan," Katara said, "You should choose your own destiny."
"Aang, just do it. It'll be done nice and quick," Sokka said.
At that moment, DAVE made a whole through the door with his gun. He plainly hovered through. "What the heck was that?!" Sokka cried confused.
"It's not like I had hands!" said DAVE, "I couldn't knock! I can't pull the handle! What could I have done!"
"You could've just called," Ryan mentioned.
"If I had hands right now I'd facepalm."
"Hey DAVE?" said the Avatar.
"Go ahead and do whatever you want," DAVE replied.
"How did you-"
"I literally heard everything. This body can hear literally anything within a 2 mile radius at max. Like I can hear Fong taking a giant crap right now."
"Nobody wants to know that."
"Me neither but I'm stuck in 300m for now. It's bloody torture!"
"Come here. Let me fix that," said Ryan, he went towards DAVE and attempted to adjust his audio settings.
"Alright. I know what I want to do now," said Aang. He then left the barracks.
"Alright, that better?" Ryan asked DAVE.
"I can here 2 birds engaging in coitus," the eyebot replied.
"Coitus?" Katara was confused.
"Don't ask," Ryan replied. He went back to work on his floating toaster companion.
"He means sex," said DAVE.
"Gross!" Katara scolded.
"DAVE, earlier you said you had some audio files stored in your hard drive, you mind playing some?"
"Sure."
What sounded like a man started talking, Blamco's Mac and Cheese! The best flavour in all of America. Delicious enough to push back those reds! Great for the whole family! Sponsored by Raid: Sh-"
"Shut it off," Ryan said.
"What was that?" Katara asked.
"Just some stupid advert that was being advertised by another advert. DAVE, is that all you have?"
"I have... let's see... 2 no wait 400 audio logs."
"I don't have time for this."
A couple minutes later, Aang came back. Turns out he agreed with speeding up the Avatar State. Everybody still queried about if this was the right decision. Until Aang stated, "I don't have time to deal with all the training the right way within a matter of months! I need to do this, guys."
"This is not going to end well," said Ryan. Katara agreed, but she left the room not wanting a part in this.
The next day, the whole group (besides Ryan), Fong and some other person stood inside a white gazebo of sorts, small pillars held up the circular ceiling.
Fong, the guy and Aang sat around a table whilst the others stayed in one place. The General gave Aang a special herbal tea claiming that it will increase energy in ten-fold. As Aang drank it he flew like crazy on an airball everywhere!
Ryan walked into the room, "Hey have any of you guys seen my Jet? I kept an inventory and some of my stuff was missing." He looked to see the Avatar going on a rush, "Alright, who the hell went through my stuff?"
Outside. One of the group came up with an idea of surprising Aang as he usually activates the Avatar State when he get's scared. He covered his face with his hands, when he removed them he saw Sokka with Momo's head. The Lemur-Bat thing scowled, Aang jumped backwards in fear.
The Lemur exited Sokka's shirt. DAVE asked, "You feel anything?" Aang declined.
"Back to the drawing board," said Fong.
The whole group travelled inside a large stone room. It was dimly lit with only flames lighting up the room. At the back was an old man with some Earth kingdom staff by him. Aang was wearing clothing from all four nations. The old man put all of the primary elements into a cauldron, "Water, Earth, Fire, Air."
He threw the cauldron at Aang. "This is just mud!" Aang obviously stated.
"This isn't going to work," said DAVE.
"Do you at least feel anything?" asked the old man.
Before Aang could say anything, he started to make a strange noise.
Suddenly, he sneezed all the dirt everywhere! Literally everybody in the room was absolutely soaked in mud.
"Gross I got some of it in my mouth!" cried Ryan, the taste of wrenching wet dirt made him vomit.
"Sorry," Aang apologised embarassed.
It had already been a day since the 3 failures. The whole gang slumbered peacefully inside the barracks, except for the Avatar. The same nightmare from before plagued his mind. His eyes shot open once again.
Breathing tirelessly, he decided to wake Sokka, "Hey, Sokka? Do you think the General will be fine if we stop his whole plan?"
The tribal boy yawned, "You're the Avatar I'm sure he'll listen to you."
"He's not going to listen to you," The Californian stated.
"You're awake?" Aang asked confused, he had a feeling of deja vu.
"I wake up easily. The General won't listen to you at all, I know his type, does anything to get what he wants. If you want to reason with him be my guest, I'm just saying."
"I do plan on reasoning with him. But after what you said, I don't really know if I should right now."
"You can reason with him if you can. If things go to hell you've got friends to support you. I'll be with you when you see him, DAVE too if he can."
"Thanks, Ryan."
"Same with me," Sokka joined still half asleep.
The next morning, the whole group (besides Katara) arrived in the main hall. Fong sat quietly behind his desk.
"Ryan, DAVE, Aang, Sokka, to what do I owe the pleasure?" Fong greeted.
"Fong, I don't think we should keep continuing this whole activation thing," said Aang, "It can only happen when I'm in potential danger."
"I see," Fong replied. Ryan knew this wouldn't go peacefully, he placed his hands near his revolver, almost ready to draw.
All of a sudden, the General attacked Aang with a strike of Earth. Surrounding sldiers grabbed the others, except DAVE since he could just float away.
"Can't get me can you?! How's the weather all the way down there?" The AI taunted. Bad luck hit him, and by bad luck I mean a large rock, the impact knocked the toaster out.
"S**t not again," Ryan cursed. As his arms were restrained by two soldiers he couldn't reach his revolver and his shotgun was back in the barracks. His last resort was the ballistic fist equipped on his arm.
For the first time in this world, the Californian pushed backwards and fired his weapon knocking one of the guards out, he turned his arm and took out the other guard. They were lucky to have been alive from an impact such as that.
Aang was blasted out of the window, Fong dashed after him. Fortunately Sokka managed to break free and took out the other guards restraining him.
The wastelander ran towards DAVE's lifeless body, he sighed, "Not again."
DAVE abruptly came back to life. Ryan was shocked, "How are you still alive?!"
"I went onto sleep mode. You see, I saw that rock before it hit me, when it did I instantly went onto sleep mode," DAVE explained, "So I kept my hard drive safe as it wasn't active."
"But I see wires popping out the back, plus that piece of metal has fallen off," Ryan pointed at the back of the body, "And you've lost like 4 rods."
"I'm sure you can patch all that stuff up. I looked through your stuff and you have an awful lot of useful junk in there."
"You're the one who went through my stuff?"
"Relax! I didn't take anything, except some of your stuff fell out."
Ryan sighed, he said calmly, "We'll handle this later. Right now Aang is getting destroyed."
"Let's go!" said Sokka.
The whole group ran down the stairs of the building. Katara was at the bottom
"What's going on?!" Katara asked.
"Fong is going crazy! He's trying to get Aang into the Avatar state through absolute danger!" Sokka responded rushingly.
The rest of the group arrived at the bottom. Katara showed up holding the back of Ryan's shotgun, "This belongs to you."
"You brought my shotgun? Do you know how dangerous this thing is to hold?!"
"I brought it here didn't I?" Ryan scowled and snatched the shotgun.
"What's his problem?"
"We'll talk about this later," said her brother. The group ran after to help Aang.
In the distance, Aang was struggling to evade the attacking Earth soldiers. Large discs were being thrown at him from all sides. He was in genuine danger but there was no glowing. Sokka actually managed to hijack one of the bird-horse thingies.
Everything went to hell.
Katara got caught in the middle of it.
Fong saw an opportunity and started sinking Katara into the ground. "Activate the Avatar State or she dies!" Fong ruthlessly threatened.
Aang stopped all his actions at once, he noticed Katara in danger. The others were unfortunately occupied. Ryan couldn't help as some soldiers trapped his arm inside a wall. DAVE was busy dodging rocks and towers forming around him, he taunted his attackers below. The Avatar was alone.
As Katara was still being sunk into the ground Aang continued to beg him to release her. "I still don't seem glowing!" Shouted Fong ruthlessly. Katara finally plunged fully into the earth.
The General's methods, as ruthless as they were, actually worked. Aang's tattoos and eyes started to brightly glow. In a rage of fury, the young boy formed a typhoon of earth as tall as a pillar beneath him.
Fong stared with a look of glory and accomplishment, he was completely oblivious at what he has caused. "Ha! This was all merely a trick to get you into the Avatar state!" Fong claimed. He earthbended Katara out of the ground.
Unfortunately, Aang didn't listen. The boy continued to lay waste to the whole base. He destroyed the wall that Ryan was caught in, the other soldiers ran away letting DAVE to be free. After a minute of destruction, Aang finally came to his senses and exited the state.
"Holy- Aang are you alright?!" Ryan asked.
"I'm fine," Aang replied, he turned to Katara, "I hope you never have to see me like that again."
"Are you kidding me?!" Fong said happily, "That was almost perfect! We just need to find out how to control it! Eh, we'll find out on the way to the city."
At that moment, Sokka came up behind him on his chicken-horse... whatever the hell it was and knocked him out with his boomerang.
"I'd rather have Caesar as these guy's General rather than this idiot. Caesar's an idiot but he's better than this piece of crap."
"I'm not from your world so I wouldn't get that," said Sokka.
A few soldiers came up behind them. The one in the middle asked, "Do you still want an escort to Omashu?"
"I think we're fine," Aang replied.
"Very well."
"Well. That was.. an interesting first impression, not how I'd expected Earth Kingdom soldiers to be," said Ryan.
"They were assholes," said DAVE, "They couldn't even catch me, a toaster! No wonder these people are losing the war!"
"Don't worry, not all these soldiers are like that," said Katara.
"Yeah, I can relate. The NCR is sometimes like this. Now can we please leave?"
"That's what we're doing."
"Great! Now we're going to have to set some rules about my stuff. I don't want you people getting yourself killed, giving Aang drugs was more than enough he's just a kid!"
"You're a kid," said DAVE.
"I only use this stuff when I really need it. You also need to be careful around my weapons, I'm talking to you Katara."
"Okay okay, we get it. We need to be careful with your belongings," said Katara.
"Yes."
"How do you people speak English?!" DAVE asked.
AND DONE! APOLOGIES THAT THIS STORY WAS JUST TALK. THERE WASN'T REALLY MUCH ACTION FOR ME TO INCLUDE IN THE EPISODE UNTIL NEAR THE END. ANYWAYS, HAVE A GOOD DAY!
