This is one of three stories I'm currently writing with a "Gamer" protagonist. All three of these characters are starting as the same personality, but will have different circumstances. Due to such, for the first several chapters there will be a few places where very similar language, actions, and thought processes happen, this should go away the further the three diverge.

Standard Fanfiction disclaimer: I own nothing but the Main Character, I'm just a guy that writes for fun.

Finally, it seemed like I had been staring at that "Game Data Loading" screen for an eternity. No real way to tell time in this near total void I found myself in but it was still way longer than I would have liked.

Loading Previous Save Data

Oh for fucks sake, is this actually Hell? Maybe Purgatory? I wasn't that bad a person. Am I doomed to be stuck in loading hell for all eternity?

I feel like I should be insulted here, at least a little...

Huh, guess I lucked out on the wizard perk, had sex on my 30th birthday, definitely not waiting that long to do that again. And I guess all that time spent hiding in the bathroom when I worked at the grocery store was worth it in the end, suck it corporate America!

Select Race
[Human] [?]

Huh, two choices. One of them a mystery. Okay, so Human, or Mystery race?

Yeah, not really a choice. Play hard, play Human!

Select Class
[Warrior] [Rogue] [Cleric] [Wizard]

I mean, is that even really a choice, given the option of magic without kowtowing to a god I'll take it, even if I end up in a "Burn the Witch!" setting, it's better to have magic and hide it than to not have it.

Hey, where am I going anyway? This doesn't look like I'm going back to Earth.

First World Selection Locked

That's... not very helpful... But since it says "First World" I guess that means I'll get to access more than one?

Select Specialty
[Earth] [Fire] [Air] [Water]

Okay, this is a tough choice. What do I want to do? And more importantly, what's going to be a good choice without knowing the system behind it? Since this system doesn't seem to be very forthcoming with information, I guess I'll just have to draw on my gaming experience. Earth is normally defensive in nature, but tends towards buffs and other odd things, like stone shape. Fire is pretty strait forward, burn things, do damage, but can also be useful for survival and crafting. Air is usually lightning and cold damage, as well as some odd buffs, and sometimes mind control, tempting that. Water usually has the healing spells, as well as body buffs and some useful things like summoning water, good for survival.

If I'm going into some sort of fiat backed adventure for my new life, I'm going to want to make things, I always enjoyed making things, in real life or in games. So Fire or Earth would be best. Tightly controlled fire could let me smelt without fuel, and be useful in a fight. Earth might let me shape things directly, and probably let me survive a fight.

Fire it is.

I wake up already standing, not groggy in the slightest, but a little chilly. I'm standing on a street corner in the dark. A slightly run down street corner, the streetlights are spaced just a little too far apart, like some bureaucrat was saving money. Looking around I appear to be at the edge of a city, icy tundra some 50 or so feet away past the next building. And that building... It looks like something from the 1920s solid bricks of not quite consistent size, iron bars in the high windows.

Wait, 1920's décor, bad lighting, am I in a pulp detective novel?

New Quest
"Where am I?"
Objective: Search for clues to determine where you are
Rewards: 100 XP, 1 Common Skill.

Huh, guess the text boxes are gonna stay with me, no way to accept or decline, guess this one's mandatory. Man I hate railroading.

Okay let's take stock of things:
1: I'm cold
2: I'm wearing jeans, a black t-shirt, and a green windbreaker that's definitely too light for this weather.
3: I'm at the edge of a city that looks like it's from a 1920's pulp novel, that for some reason is in the arctic.

Okay, that's almost everything. If the text boxes are still here, I wonder... 'status'

Huh, weird name, and boy is that a wall of text. I'm just glad the skills seem to have their descriptions minimized. Okay so that's not much help. Maybe I'm in some weird version of Gotham where one of Mr. Freeze's schemes succeeded? Are there any blimps?

oh.

There in the sky, where it has no godly right to be, is another city, floating there catching the morning light before it has reached me down in this lowly ground bound city. It glistens in the light as it sinks in just where I ended up.

"Great, I'm on a Deathworld..."

Author's Note: FFS I forgot how bad this site screws up formatting. Other Two stories going live as soon as I fix them.
AN2: Apparently hates me trying to indent paragraphs properly. guess that will speed up the other two stories.
