Authors note: Just had to say I went back in chapter 5 and did a small bit of editing to make this next part work, nothing major. I've been rewatching the show a bit and I finally got this figured how I want it to go. Enjoy.

Storybrooke, Maine

The door to the sheriff's station swung violently open as Regina stormed out and down the street. Her eyes were blood shot and her head pounded after the 'discussion' she just had with Jack. She was angry at him, at the world, and their local newspaper reporter. But most of all she was angry at herself. Then she spotted Ruby making her way up the street in her direction with a bag of food from Granny's diner. Regina moved slightly to her right just enough to ram her shoulder into Ruby's, almost knocking the bag from her hand.

"Madam Mayor I'm sorry," Ruby apologized as if it were her fault. "I didn't mean to-"

"Just watch where you're going. Move out of my way," Regina snapped as she stormed on.

Ruby just stood and watched as Regina walked up to her car, got in and quickly drove away. The only thing Ruby could mutter was, "Well damn."

Regina quickly headed to her home and as soon as she arrived, she saw Sidney Glass leaning against her front door reading a book. She put her car in park and slammed the door. Sidney had a bit of a smile on his face, feeling just a bit of pride from his work the night before but that smile quickly disappeared. As she approached him, he held up the book with the title, 'The Inner and Outer Workings of Locomotives'.

"Now Regina, I-I-I didn't know," Sidney stammered.

She quickly snatched the thick book from his hand and proceeded to hit him as hard as she could with it. "My son was on that damn train you idiot," she yelled at him. Sidney tried in a futile attempt to block the blows.

"I didn't know," he cried. "I can't predict the future Regina! You wanted an accident so that's what I did!"

She threw the book down. "Just get out of my sight," she ordered, messaging her temple with her fingers. Sidney quickly picked up his book, got in his car and left. All she wanted to do was to protect Henry and she knew she inadvertently put him in harms way. But she knew that if Emma had never shown up everything would still be fine. She would find a way to get rid of her one day. She would find a way.

Jack sat in his jail cell staring at the floor thinking about what had happened only mere hours ago and the argument he just had with Regina. An argument that he knew wouldn't improve his odds for leaving his cell anytime soon. He winced as he shifted his weight. After a quick exam at the hospital, they found out he had bruised several ribs from the accident. It hurt pretty bad but he was trying to tough it out.

"This had to be deliberate. But it doesn't make sense," he said to himself. "Who'd want to hurt me and why? It had to be someone else. I checked over everything."

While he was left to his thoughts Emma was trying to get Graham to let him go. "Look you know this isn't right. It was an accident. Jack shouldn't be in there," Emma argued.

"I understand but I can't let him go. Not until we get this sorted out," Sheriff Graham replied.

"Sort out what? There's nothing to sort out."

"Look, she's the Mayor and I'm just doing my job," he replied, sitting down at his desk and begun to fill out paperwork.

"Doing your job? Your job is the wellbeing of these people not to keep Mayor Mills happy," she said putting her hands on his desk and leaned toward him. "He doesn't deserve to be in there."

"I know Emma. I have this under control. If no one posts his bail I will get him out of there," he said.

"Maybe you could use a deputy to keep things in check around here," Emma said. She then frowned at Graham. "I need some air."

As she went out Ruby came in holding the bag of food from Granny's. "Uhm…should I come back," she asked concerningly.

"No, it's alright," Graham sighed. "She just needs a bit of time to cool off. What is it you need Ruby?"

"I'm just here to bring some food to Jack."

"Fine, go ahead," he said and returned to his paper work.

Ruby grabbed a nearby chair, pulled it up to Jacks cell and sat down.

"Hi," she smiled, trying to be cheerful. "I brought you a sandwich from Granny's."

Jack looked at her and weakly smiled back. "Thanks' Ruby," he said, taking the bag as she slid it through the bars.

"We'll get you out of here in no time Jack, don't worry," she said.

"Well unless there's a giant metal file in this sandwich I probably won't be leaving anytime soon if Regina has her way. I really screwed up Ruby. I don't know if I missed something or if something else happened."

"What else could had happened," she asked. Then she thought for a minute. "You think someone messed with your train?"

"I don't know. It wouldn't make any sense. I don't really have any enemies here. Maybe I'm just being delusional. I must had just missed something during the check."

"Well like I said we will have you out in no time. Me, Mary Margaret and Granny are all going to pitch in for your bail," she smiled.

"You guys keep it. You all have things you need that money for more," he said.

"Just shut up and accept our help," she replied. "We are getting you out whether you want us to or not."

He couldn't help but smile. "I appreciate it. I'll pay all of you back when I can."

"Hush," she ordered. "We will worry about that later. The only bad news is we won't be able to post your bail until tomorrow so you'll be stuck her just for tonight but first thing we will be here with the money."

"Thank you, Ruby."

She looked at him and smiled. "Hey, what kind of person would I be if I left my drinking bubby to rot in a cell?"

Jack ate his food and they both talked a while longer. Once she left, he read a bit of one of the books Graham had lying around the jail to help him focus on something else for a while. A couple hours had passed and he decided to lay on his cot to try and get some rest. If he could get any rest. The old cot was a stiff as a board and the pillow wasn't much better either. But eventually sleep took him and he drifted off.

He awoke not too much later in a cold sweat. More dreams of more of the same. A battlefield, a dark-haired woman, and a stone necklace. As soon as I get out of here, I'm making an appointment with Dr. Hopper, he thought to himself.

He could see the sun was already going down and the only other people that were in the Sheriff's office were Emma and Graham. Jack could not help but overhear their conversation and what he heard he liked.

"Look I'm sorry I got you upset earlier," Graham apologized. "And I understand if you don't want the position now but-"

"I still want it," Emma replied.

A bit surprised and relieved Graham smiled. "Well in that case you'll be needing this," he said, handing her a deputy's uniform shirt with a tie.

"A tie," she said to Graham in disbelief. "You know you don't have to dress a woman as a man to give her authority."

"So, you think you can get people to do what you want in that red coat?"

"I'm getting you to do what I want right now."

"Well at least wear the badge," he said holding it out to her. "Go on, take it. If you really want to be a part of this community you have to make it official."

Emma took the badge from his hand and clipped it on her belt. As soon as she did the whole room shook. Jack steadied himself on his cot until the shaking stopped. Then the station phones began to ring off the hook.

"What the hell was that," Jack asked.

"Small earthquake maybe," Emma suggested.

Graham rushed over and picked up one of the phones. After a short conversation he hung up the phone and said, "There was a collapse at the old mine. Emma, we got to go."

"What about Jack," she asked following him to the door. "We shouldn't just leave him alone. What if something happens here and we need to get him out?"

"After we've taken care of business at the mine you can head back here and I'll stay behind to finish things up," he said.

Emma looked at Jack like she was asking for permission.

"I'll be fine Emma," he smiled. "Do what your boss says."

She rolled her eyes at Jack and left the station with Graham. Jack lay back on his cot and he began to wonder. The old Storybrooke mine," he though. I always wondered what was down in that hole. Gold? Silver? Maybe seven small dwarves? He chuckled at his own lame joke. At least I can make myself laugh.

It was around twelve the next day Ruby stopped by the station with the bail money. Jack knew she must had just run there from work because she still had her pen and lunch ticket pad sticking out of her pocket. Graham unlocked the door to his cell and pulled it open.

"Jack I'm sorry," he apologized. "I wouldn't had put you in there but-"

"It's fine Sheriff," Jack smiled. "You're a good man. Just keep making the choices you want to make like you did with deputizing Emma and you'll be on your way to keeping Regina out of your job."

Graham glanced at the floor. If he only knew, he thought. Then he looked back to Jack and said, "Thanks. I'll keep that in mind." And held out his hand.

Jack took it, they shook hands and the Sheriff showed him out.

Jack stood outside the police station looking around for a moment and taking in the sights of their small town. It had just about been 24hrs he had spent in a cell but to him it felt like a couple days. He pulled a cigarette out of the pack in his jacket pocket and placed it between his lips. He was just about to light it when he saw Henry walking down the street but something wasn't right. He was walking fast and looking down at the pavement. Jack placed the cigarette back in the pack and jogged over to Henry.

"Hey Henry," he called out. "Wait up!"

Henry stopped and turned but he didn't look Jack in the eye.

"Hey, something wrong," Jack asked.

Henry looked up at him and Jack could see he was fighting the urge to cry but by the tears slowly dripping down his cheeks he knew he was losing that battle.

"Archie-he-he told me I was going crazy," he sobbed. "That it's all in my head. The curse, how people aren't who they really are, Emma being the savior, all of it."

Jack knew that didn't sound like Archie. He had always cared about Henrys wellbeing and would have never hurt him like that. Someone got to him and he knew who it had to have been.

"I'm sorry Henry," Jack said kneeling down in front of him. "Look I'm sure Archie didn't mean the things he said."

Henry didn't reply. He just stood there, tears dripping onto the pavement.

Jack continued. "You want me to call your mother or-"

"Emma," he spoke up. "I want to see Emma."

Jack couldn't drive him, being that his car was at his home and all, and he definitely didn't want Henry walking alone like this.

"Alright. We'll go together," Jack said and began their walk to Mary Margaret's house where Emma was currently staying.

It wasn't too much longer they were standing in front of the door to her apartment. Jack stood back and let Henry knock on the door. Emma pulled the door open and as soon as she saw Henry crying a look of alarm spread on her face.

"Kid, what happened," he asked and helped him inside.

Jack still stood at the door and he could see Mary Margaret standing at her kitchen counter. She waved for him to come inside so he did and shut the door behind him. He walked up to the counter and sat down on one of the stools in front of it meanwhile Emma was in the other room trying to comfort Henry. "Hi," he simply said.

"What happened to Henry," she asked.

"Doctor Hopper happened," Jack replied.

"Archie? What do you mean?"

"Apparently, from what Henry told me Hooper was trying to take his fantasy about the curse and destroy it."

"But why would he do that?"

"I don't think it was all him and from the looks of it I don't think Emma does either."

Emma stormed back into the kitchen. "I'm going to drop Henry off at the mayor's office then go have a little chat with Doctor Hopper to find out what the hell was he thinking."

"Emma, you know as well as I do the mans scared," Jack said.

"Well maybe it's time for him to stand up and stop cowering," Emma said, putting on her red jacket. "Come on Henry. How about I take you for a drive to cool off then I'll drop you off at Regina's office?"

"Ok," he said sadly and followed her out the door.

Then Jack and Mary Margarete were alone. She offered him a cup of coffee which he happily accepted and they began to chat.

"Poor Henry," she said. "I hope he will be alright."

"It's sounds like Emma is going to sort it out as quick as she can. Don't worry," Jack assured her. Then he said, "So…I haven't thanked you yet for helping to bail me out. If it weren't for you, Ruby and Granny I'd probably still be sitting in there today."

"It's nothing," she smiled. "I was just glad to help. I'm sorry I wasn't there to see the train."

"Well, at least you got to see her before then and you didn't see the flaming scrap heap she became," he said sadly.

Mary Margarete leaned forward and placed her hand on his. "I'm sorry Jack. I know your father would have been proud of you for finishing it for him regardless of what happened. And I'm proud of you too."

He looked her in the eyes and she smiled at him. Then his head throbbed and he saw a woman that looked like Mary Margaret standing before him but with longer hair wearing a set of light armor and brandishing a bow on her back. He quickly withdrew his hand.

"Jack are you ok," she asked. The concern in her voice was plain to hear.

He rubbed his eyes and saw her standing there looking normal once more. "Yeah…I'm fine," he smiled, trying to reassure her. "Just a passing headache. I'm fine."

"You need to be sure to take care of yourself," she said. "After having one seizure you could have another."

"I know. I'm alright, really. It was just a headache," he said. "So how are things at the hospital?"

She blushed slightly. "What do you mean," she asked.

"You know. The volunteer work, David Nolan."

"Uhm, fine. Everything's, uhm, fine," she stammered and forced a fake smile.

"I've known you long enough to tell when you're lying," he said. "Just be careful. One man isn't worth causing a mountain worth of trouble for."

"I know," she sighed. "I'd already gotten a speech from Emma today. Don't worry I'm going to keep my distance."

"Good," Jack said and stood up. "I just don't want to see you hurt. You're too sweet of a woman for that."

Mary Margaret smiled. "Thank you. That means a lot."

"You're welcome," he said, giving her a hug. "I think I'll be on my way home. I got a bit of walk ahead of me."

"Do you want a ride," she asked.

"No, it's fine. I think I want some fresh air. I'll see you later Mary Margaret."

She smiled, told him goodbye and he headed out the door. He hadn't made it but a few minutes down the road when he saw Emma's yellow bug flying around the corner with Archie in his car close behind. She came to a stop with a loud screech as she hit the brakes. "Jack," she called to him. "Henry may have gone to the old mine!"

"What? Why," he asked.

"He thinks somethings down there! We're about to go get him so quick get in! If I can't talk sense into him maybe you can!"

Jack quickly opened the door to the passenger's side, got in and Emma hit the gas. They were soon at the old mine and there was no sign of Henry. Emma and Jack darted to the mine entrance followed by Archie and his dog Pongo. Pongo had already begun to sniff around the entrance.

"I don't think he's here," Emma said.

"He is," Archie said holding up a wrapped chocolate bar Pongo found. "Candy bar. He had these with him."

Then the ground began to shake. Emma began to lose her footing and Jack struggled to stand up. Archie made his way into the entrance calling out for Henry. "Archie, wait," Jack yelled out.

Archie knew he had to get Henry out of there and in he went. Emma called out to Archie and Henry but to no avail. A few seconds later the entrance caved in. "Damn it," Jack cried out as he and Emma rushed over.

Soon with a couple phone calls from Emma to Graham and Regina practically the whole town was on the scene to help. Local construction workers, originally planning to collapse the mine and pave over it, were now there to move debris and assist in the rescue. Jack sat on the ground next to Ruby who held Pongo on a leash. "You think they'll be alright," she asked worriedly.

"Archie's pretty smart and Henry's a tough kid," Jack said. "If anyone can get through this it'd be them."

The ground shook once more. He heard Regina shouting, glanced over and saw that she and Emma were already at each other's throats while the Sheriff and Marco stood by.

"We got to think of something and fast," Jack said to Ruby. "This is taking too long." He stood up and walked over to Regina and Emma.

"We've got to speed this up this thing could collapse at any minute," Jack warned.

"Don't you think I know that," Regina snapped. "We need something big. Something that could punch through the ground."

"Explosives," suggested Marco.

"That could work," Jack said.

Regina knew Henry was running out of time. She looked over at the lead man of the rescue group and ordered him to plant explosives at the entrance. After the charges were set everyone went to take cover. Jack joined Ruby behind the fire truck.

"Blow it," Regina ordered.

The detonator was pressed and the charges went off. The sound of the explosion rang in Jack's head and she smell of black powder and dirt filled his nose.

Then it happened. It was as if someone had slammed his head into a concrete wall. The pain was intense and throbbing. His head felt as if it were going to explode. "Not again," he muttered to himself. He knew he had to get away. He wanted all attention on Henry and Archie's rescue. While everyone was distracted waiting to see the results of the blast, he made his way into the nearby woods.

Cold sweat poured down his face and blood began to drip out of his nose. The pain in his head intensified so much he dropped to his knees. He closed his eyes and begged for the pain to stop. His body felt like it was on fire then came the chills and aching. But he realized the pain was different this time. Then it was almost as if a dared door trapping something inside his brain broke open. Memories. His memories. All of them came flooding back. Everything from his home in England, the war, Carina's brother Darren, Iris, his exploits in the Enchanted Forest, the arrival of the curse, everything that had happened swarmed his mind. Then most importantly he remembered her. Carina. "I've got to get out of here," he said to himself.
