The sun's rays reflected off of the shiny black paint coating the Impala, glimmering through the windows as it sped down the empty road. Dean was driving, as usual, rock music playing quietly on the radio. Sam was in the passenger seat, his head pulled to the side fast asleep. Jason once again took up the backseat, his headphones firmly in place as he listened to Nothing Else Matters by Metallica on his walkman. Holding it in his hand again was bittersweet. Having it meant that Sam was back, but it was certainly not caused by good circumstances. Jason felt for his brother, even though he had never been in love with a girl like Sam was, but he could see how much Sam cared for Jess, and how badly losing her had affected him.
A week has passed since Jessica's death, every waking hour of that time was spent at Stanford trying to pick up any trace of the thing that killed her. But even after all the searching, they found nothing. Finally, last night, they decided to pack up and head out to the coordinates John had left for them.
It was a good distance away. One of the most boring things about hunting was the long hours on the road with only a few stops for gas or snacks along the way. Jason didn't mind though, he always loved watching the open road, ever since he was little.
Suddenly, Sam's eyes opened wide, and let out a gasp, shooting up from his seat. He looked around in panic before realizing he was in the Impala with his brothers. After a second Sam calmed down and relaxed in his seat. Dean and Jason both looked at Sam with concerned looks on their faces.
"You OK?" Dean asked, keeping his eyes on the road.
"Yeah, I'm fine," Sam mumbled, rubbing his eyes.
Jason removed his headphones, looking at his little brother. "Was it another nightmare?"
Sam cleared his throat but otherwise stayed silent, not answering Jason's question. Sam had been having those kinds of nightmares since Jessica was killed. They got more vivid and more terrifying every time. He tried to play it all off, but Dean and Jason noticed the changes in him. Sam was so much more aggressive and distant than they'd ever seen. But it was understandable given his loss.
"Wanna drive for a while?" Dean offered. Sam and Jason both looked at Dean with surprise. He never offered to let either of them drive the Impala...ever.
Sam chuckled. "In your whole life, you never once asked me or Jason that."
"I just thought you might want to. Never mind." Dean shrugged, then turned his focus back to the road.
"Well, if Sam's not going to, is it okay if I drive?" Jason asked, sitting up excitedly.
"No," Dean replied all too quickly. Jason sighed in annoyance and rested back in his seat.
"Look, guys, I know y'all are worried about me," Sam started hesitantly "I get it and thank you both of you, but I'm perfectly okay."
"Mm-hmm," Dean mumbled while Jason just rolled his eyes. Neither of them believed for a single second that their little brother was okay. He just lost his girlfriend, which on its own is not something a person can simply recover from overnight, but combined with how she died...needless to say, they were growing more concerned for him by the day.
Sam grabbed a map off of the dash, unfolded it, and began looking at it. "All right." Sam cleared his throat. "Where are we?"
"We are just outside of Grand junction," Dean answered him.
"You know what? Maybe we shouldn't have left Stanford so soon." Sam suggested out of the blue.
"Sam, we spent a week there digging for answers and found nothing at all," Jason stated gently. "If we're gonna find the thing that killed Jessica-"
"Then we gotta find Dad first." Sam finished Jason's sentence for him.
"Look, Dad disappearing, and this thing showing up again after 20 years? It's no coincidence." Dean affirmed. "Dad will have answers. He'll know what to do."
Sam stared at the map in his hands for a moment before speaking. "It's weird man."
"What is?" Jason asked.
"These coordinates he left us, this Black Water Ridge…"
"What about it?" Dean questioned.
"It's just woods," Sam said, lowering the map looking straight forward with a confused look. "Why is he sending us to the middle of nowhere?"
Sure, it was weird that their Dad was sending them to what appeared to be nothing but a forest, but Dean and Jason had faith in him. Sam, on the other hand, was questioning his motives. Either way, with Dean behind the wheel, they were going to do what John said.
Driving past a sign that read Lost Creek, Colorado, there was no turning back now. They were arriving at their destination.
At the town's ranger station, Dean parked the Impala, and the brothers exited the car. They figured this was the best place to get a better idea as to why John sent them here. Inside, the walls were adorned with maps, and there were plenty of rangers to ask for information useful about the area.
"So Black Water Ridge is pretty remote. It's cut off by these canyons here-" Sam announced, pointing to the canyons on the large map of the area he and Jason were standing in front of.
"Rough terrain, dense forest, abandoned silver and gold mines all over the place…" Jason trailed off as he noticed that Dean wasn't paying attention to them, instead, he was off to the side staring at a picture of a hunter standing behind a giant dead bear hanging on the wall. Jason and Sam walked away from the map and over to Dean,
"And a dozen or more Grizzlies in the area," Sam added, having seen the picture Dean was looking at. "It's no nature hike that's for sure."
"You can say that again," Jason nodded in agreement.
"You boys aren't planning to go out near Black Water Ridge by any chance?" A voice spoke up behind them making them quickly turn around to see who it was. A ranger stood there, one hand on his hip and the other holding a cup of coffee.
"Oh, no, sir. We're environmental-study majors from U.C. Boulder. Just working on a paper." Sam lied, quickly making up a cover story.
"Recycle man," Dean added, raising a fist.
"Gotta save the planet," Jason smiled, also raising a fist.
"Bull," The ranger rolled his eyes, not buying what they were saying. "Your friends with that Hailey girl, right?"
"Yes," Dean answered quickly.
"We are, ranger...Wilkinson," Jason read the ranger's name tag out slowly.
"Well, I will tell you three exactly what I told her. Her brother filled out a backcountry permit saying he wouldn't be back from Black Water until the 24th. So it's not exactly a missing person now is it?" The ranger said. "You tell that girl to quit worrying, I'm sure her brother's just fine,"
"We will," Dean said, nodding his head. He grinned. "Well, that Hailey girl's quite a pistol, huh?"
"That is putting it mildly," Wilkinson replied.
"Actually you know what would help is if we could show her a copy of that backcountry permit. You know, so she could see her brother's return date."
Fortunately, the ranger didn't give them a hard time and printed off a copy of the paper. The brothers walked back out to the Impala with Dean chuckling waving the paper in front of Jason and Sam gloatingly.
"What are you cruising for a hookup or something?" Sam asked, half-amused and half disgusted with his big brother.
"What do you mean?" Dean questioned innocently.
"The coordinates point out to Black Water Ridge. So what are we waiting for? Let's just go find Dad. Why even talk to this girl?" Sam asked, throwing his arms out to the side in frustration. The brothers stopped at the Impala before continuing.
"Because we should know what the fuck we're walking into before walking into it, Sam," Jason explained.
Dean and Jason both looked at Sam, who raised an eyebrow in question. "What?"
"Since when are you all shoot first and ask questions later?" Dean questioned.
Jason nodded in agreement, "Yeah, Sam that isn't like you."
"Well, it is now," Sam said, then opened his door and got into the passenger seat.
"Oh really?" Dean asked, sharing a concerned look with Jason as Sam slipped into the Impala without another word.
Collin's House
Even though the town of Bailey was small, it took the brothers some time to find their way to the Collins' home, considering the neighborhood they resided in was practically out in the middle of nowhere. In front of the house, Dean parked the Impala, the three brothers making their way up to the front door. Dean rang the doorbell, a few seconds ticking by before a girl around their age with curly dark brown hair and blue eyes answered the door, leaving the screen door in front shut.
"You must be Hailey Collins," Dean smiled at her seductively. Sam internally rolled his eyes at his brother flirting right off the bat. Dean continued. "I'm Dean, this is Jason, and that's Sam. We're rangers with the park service. Ranger Wilkinson sent us over. We wanted to ask you some questions about your brother Tommy."
Hailey looked at the three men hesitantly, still holding onto the doorknob. "Let me see some ID."
"Oh," Dean reached into his pocket, pulling out his wallet that contained his fake ID. He pressed the ID up against the screen door. Hailey leaned forward, eyes squinted as she read it over. After a moment, she looked back up at the brothers. Dean smiled innocently, putting his wallet back into his pocket. over it.
"Come on in," Hailey relented, opening the screen door to allow them inside. Over their shoulder, she spotted the Impala sitting out in front. "That yours?"
"Yeah," Dean answered proudly.
"Nice car," Hailey complimented, before going back inside. Dean grinned widely, shooting a gloating look at his brothers when Hailey turned away from them. Jason rolled his eyes, pushing Dean forward. They began following Hailey as Sam shut the door.
Hailey escorted them to the dining area where they saw a boy in his teen years sitting at the table, hunched over a pile of papers. He barely even glanced up at the four as they entered. Hailey introduced him as Ben, her little brother. Mentioning that they were about to have dinner, she disappeared into the kitchen for something. There was a lull of silence as the boy, who they presumed to be Hailey's brother, peered up at them.
"So, if Tommy's not due back for a while, then how do you know if he's missing?" Sam asked Hailey as she re-entered the dining room with a couple of bowls in hand. She brushed by the boys, placing the items onto the table, one in front of her brother and the other in front of an empty chair. Her little brother let out a loud sigh, picking up a spoon.
"He checks in every day by cell," Hailey replied, leaning against the table. "He emails, photos, stupid little videos—we haven't heard anything in over three days now."
"Well, maybe he can't get cell reception," Sam pointed out.
Hailey shook her head. "He's got a satellite phone, too."
"Maybe he's just having too much fun and probably forgot to check in with you guys," Jason suggested.
The teen dropped his silverware on the table, looking up in annoyance. "He wouldn't do that."
Dean looked up at the boy in question, wondering why he just suddenly acted out.
"Our parents are gone," Hailey explained, "It's just my two brothers and me. We all keep pretty close tabs on each other."
Sam, Dean, and Jason all shared understanding looks. That was something they could sympathize with. Most times they only had each other. When they were younger, John wasn't there for them much. He was always away hunting, so they had to look after themselves, and each other, most of the time. Then, when Sam left for college Dean and Jason decided to stick closer together and split up only if necessary.
"Can I see the pictures he sent you?" Sam asked. Hailey nodded, heading into the other room. She came back a moment later with a laptop in her hands. She placed it on the table, opened it up, and pulled up the pictures of her brother.
"That's Tommy," she explained, scrolling through the files until she pulled a video. The brothers watched carefully as it began playing, looking for signs of anything...weird.
"Hey, Hailey," Tommy smiled at the camera he held. Sam couldn't help but notice the teenager's reaction to his big brother's voice. He flinched, sadness covering his features. Tommy continued with a reassuring smile. "Day six. We're still out near Black Water Ridge. We're fine, keeping safe, don't worry, okay? Talk to you tomorrow."
Nearing the end of the video, Sam could've sworn he saw something pass behind Tommy. Like a flash of movement in the trees. He played it off, figuring he'd mention it to his brothers later on once they were alone.
"Don't worry, Hailey we'll find your brother," Jason reassured her as Hailey stopped the video before it played again.
"We're heading to Blackwater Ridge first thing," Dean explained.
"Then maybe I'll see you there," Hailey said, making her way behind her little brother's chair. She placed her hands on his shoulders, comforting him. Seeing that Dean shot her a surprised look, she explained. "I can't stand around here anymore, so I hired a guide. I'm heading out in the morning, and I'm gonna find Tommy myself."
"I think I know how you feel," Dean said sympathetically. He could relate to Hailey, he's been looking after Sam and Jason for, well, forever. And if he lost either of them, he wouldn't know what to do. He wouldn't be able to live with himself.
"Hey, do you mind forwarding these to me?" Sam requested, pointing at the collection of files on the screen.
Hailey nodded. "Sure."
After Hailey sent copies of her brother's pictures and videos to Sam's email, the three left the Collins' home, heading to the nearest bar to get a few drinks and go over what little information they had. The brothers grabbed a seat at one of the empty tables near the back, passing by a game of pool in progress and a waitress carrying drinks. Once seated, Sam placed his bag on the table, pulling out his laptop and a manilla envelope.
"So, Black Water Ridge doesn't get a lot of traffic. Local Campers mostly, but this past April two campers went missing and they were never found," Sam explained, opening the folder, he pulled out some newspaper printouts.
"Well, were there any before that?" Jason inquired.
"Yeah," Sam pushed the papers over to his brothers. "In 1982, eight different people all vanished in the same year. Authorities said it was a grizzly attack. And, again, in 1959, and again, before that, in 1936. Every twenty-three years, just like clockwork."
They looked over the papers, reading through the articles with confused looks. It definitely is disturbing that so many people could vanish in that forest, but what could've done it?
Sam opened the folder Hailey had sent to him, opening the video she had played before. He went through it, breaking down the part he'd noticed as strange beforehand. He parted it into three frames before turning his laptop around so his brothers could see.
"I downloaded that guy Tommy's video to the laptop. Check this out," Sam began.
"Hey do it again, Sam," Jason requested, catching the shadow in the background.
Sam complied, replaying the clips. "That's three frames. It's a fraction of a second. Whatever that thing is, it can move."
Dean lightly punched Sam in the shoulder. "We told you something weird was going on,"
"Yeah," Sam replied, closing his laptop, with a roll of his eyes. Sam leafed through the rest of the newspaper articles in his folder. "I got one more thing,"
"Which is?" Jason asked, taking the paper Sam handed him.
"In '59, one camper survived the supposed Grizzly attack, just a kid barely crawled out of the woods alive," Sam told them. That was good to know, talking to someone who's seen this creature first hand would likely be useful in helping them figure out what it was.
"Is there a name?" Dean asked.
Even though it was late, the boys had a hunch that they were running out of time. Something told them that Tommy hadn't been answering his sister for a much worse reason than his family could ever fathom. They parked the Impala in the lot of an old apartment complex that Sam had directed them to. Once at the door of the apartment Sam had found, Dean knocked on the door and an old man answered. Once again, Dean lied and said he and his brothers were rangers. He told the man that they were reopening the investigation on what happened to the man and his family.
Thankfully, he invited them inside. For once, they regretted someone being so compliant because as soon as they entered, the stale smell of cigarette smoke and rotting food smacked them in the face. The studio apartment was in a horrible state. Trash was thrown everywhere, empty beer bottles were scattered around, the wallpaper was torn off in some spots revealing the drywall.
The man lit another cigarette, turning back to face them. "Look, ranger, I don't know why you're asking me about this. It's a public record. I was a kid. My parents got mauled by a-"
"Grizzly? That's what attacked them?" Sam questioned, interrupting Mr. Shaw, who took another drag from his cigarette, then removed it from his mouth and nodded at Sam.
"The other people that went missing that year...those bear attacks too?" Dean asked, an eyebrow raised.
"And what about all the people that went missing this year?" Jason added. "Are you sure it's all just a grizzly?"
Mr. Shaw rocked on his feet, beginning to look uncomfortable. Dean watched him closely, speaking pointedly. "See if we knew what we were dealing with then we might be able to stop it."
"I seriously doubt that," Mr. Shaw argued with a scoff, taking a seat in a chair beside his bed. "Anyways, I don't see the difference it would make. You wouldn't believe me, Nobody ever did."
Sam walked past Dean and Jason, approaching the old man. He took a seat on the mattress in front of him. "Mr. Shaw…what did you see?"
"You can trust us, Mr. Shaw, we just want to know what you saw that night," Jason pressed gently.
Mr. Shaw looked at them for a moment then let out a sigh. "Nothing. It moved too fast to see. It hid well too, but I heard it, though. A roar...like no man or animal I ever heard.."
"It came at night?" Sam asked. The man nodded in response. Sam continued. "Got inside your tent?"
"It got inside our cabin," Shaw corrected Sam. "I was sleeping in front of the fireplace when it came in. It didn't smash a window or break the door...it unlocked it. Do any of you know of a bear that could do something like that?" Shaw asked, his voice beginning to shake as he remembered the horrors of that night. "I didn't even wake up until I heard my parents screaming."
"It killed them?" Sam asked.
"Dragged them off into the night," Shaw answered sadly, shaking his head. "Why it left me alive…I have no idea. Been asking myself that ever since. It did leave me this though," Shaw grabbed the collar of his shirt and pulled it down, revealing large raised scars of claw marks imprinted on his skin. Jason's eyes widened at the sight, Dean and Sam were also taken aback by them.
Whatever it was that caused that, is certainly something very dangerous.
"There's something evil in those woods. It was some sort of a demon." Shaw said.
After thanking Mr. Shaw for his time, they left the apartment. As they walked back to the car, they discussed the information they'd just gathered.
"Spirits and demons don't have to unlock doors if they want inside. They can just go right through the walls," Dean said.
"So we can cross those off the list, what do you think this could be?" Jason asked.
"It's probably something else, something corporeal," Sam suggested.
"Corporeal? Excuse me, professor." Dean joked at Sam's choice of word.
"Shut up," Sam retorted, quickly getting back to the point. "So, what do you think?"
"The claws, the speed that it moves...it could be a skinwalker, maybe a black dog. Whatever we're talking about, we're talking about a creature, and it's corporeal," Dean poked fun at Sam again, moving ahead of them a bit. "Which means we can kill it."
When the brothers got back to the Impala, Dean made his way to the back of the car where he grabbed out his keys and unlocked the trunk. Jason stayed beside Dean and watched for anybody that could appear. After opening the trunk, Dean pulled up the hidden compartment, taking out a shotgun, he used that to prop the compartment up. Dean then began grabbing a bunch of weapons out of the compartment and putting them into a duffel bag.
"We can't let that Hailey girl go out there," Sam said, leaning on the side of the Impala.
"Oh yeah? What are we gonna tell her? She can't go into the woods because of a big, scary monster?" Dean asked sarcastically.
"Yeah," Sam answered simply. Dean and Jason looked at Sam, surprised with his answer.
That wasn't how Sam was when it came to hunting, normally he would come up with a creative lie to tell people. Anything to protect them from the truth. He never wanted to just bluntly tell them about the monster.
"Sam, her brother's missing, she's not just gonna sit this out and do nothing," Jason pointed out.
"We go with her, we protect her, and we keep our eyes peeled for our fuzzy predator friend," Dean said as he finished packing weapons, then picked up the duffel bag, making his way to the back door.
"So finding Dad's not enough?" Sam questioned closing the compartment and slamming the trunk down. "Now we gotta babysit, too?"
The two stared at Sam, he was really starting to get on Dean's nerves with this attitude of his. To Jason, it was like they were talking to a spoiled brat who complained whenever he didn't get his way.
"What?" Sam asked, throwing his arms out to the side.
"Nothing," Dean muttered, tossing the duffel bag into Sam's arms before getting into the Impala. Jason let out a sigh, following along.
Sam groaned in frustration with Dean and Jason's stubbornness, he had no idea why they were so determined to do this hunt while John was missing. Sure he could understand that they wanted to save that girl and her family but they were wasting time here.
The next morning, Sam, Dean, and Jason arrived at the entrance to the forest where they saw Hailey with her brother, Ben, and the guide she hired. The brothers got out of the Impala and walked up to them with Sam carrying the duffel bag filled with their weapons.
"You guys got room for three more?" Dean asked with a smile.
"Who are these guys?" The man behind Hailey asked.
"Apparently, this is all the park service could muster up for search and rescue," Hailey said, turning to face the three, her hands on her hips.
The man looked at the three brothers questionably. "You're rangers?"
"That's right," Dean replied with a confident nod.
"And you guys are hiking out in biker boots and jeans?" Hailey asked, suspiciously.
Dean glanced down at his legs before looking back up at her with a smirk. "Well, sweetheart, I don't do shorts,"
"Oh, you think this is funny? It's dangerous backcountry out there. Her brother might be hurt," The man said, approaching Dean rather aggressively.
Dean glanced at Jason and Sam then turned back to the man. "Believe me, I know how dangerous it can be. We just want to help her find her brother, that's all."
Even though Roy didn't stop grumbling the entire time, he led the group into the forest. Dean and Jason followed behind him, with Hailey, Ben, and Sam bringing up the rear.
"So Roy, you said you did a little hunting," Dean questioned, stepping over a large log to walk beside Roy.
"Yeah, more than a little," Roy replied, barely glancing over his shoulder at Dean.
"Uh-huh, what kind of furry critters do you hunt?" Dean goated.
"Mostly buck, sometimes bear," Roy answered, annoyed.
"Tell me, uh, did Bambi or Yogi ever hunt you back?" Dean asked, stepping in front of him, only for Roy to grab his arm, stopping him from moving. Dean glared at the man. "What are you doing Roy?"
Roy ignored Dean, picking up a stick off the ground. He stabbed it into the grass in front of Dean, triggering a beartrap hidden under the brush.
That was lucky. Another few steps and Dean may have lost his leg. "Damn, good eyes Roy," Jason complimented.
"Thanks, kid," Roy said, appreciatively before turning back to Dean, "You should watch where you're stepping...ranger."
Dean chuckled glancing at Sam and Jason with a sheepish grin. "It's a bear trap."
Hailey marched past Jason to confront Dean, who had started moving forward again. "You didn't pack any provisions, you guys are carrying a duffel bag. You're not rangers, so who the hell are you?" Hailey demanded to know, grabbing Dean turning him to face her.
Everyone else stopped short, Jason, Sam, and Dean shared a knowing look. Hailey wasn't gonna stop until she had an answer. They might as well just tell her the truth. Or half, at least.
"Sam, Jason, and I are brothers, and we're looking for our father. He might be here, but we don't know. I just figured that you and me, we're in the same boat." Dean confessed.
"Why didn't you just tell me that from the start?" Hailey asked, immediately feeling bad for being so rough.
"I'm telling you now," Dean replied. "Besides, it's probably the most honest I've been with a woman…ever."
Jason laughed at that last part, nodding. He had to agree, that probably was the most honest Dean's ever been with a woman.
"So are we good?" Dean asked.
"Yeah, okay," Hailey nodded.
"And what do you mean I didn't pack any provisions?" Dean pulled out a bag of peanut M&M's and held them out in front of Hailey, whose mouth fell open in surprise. Dean turned to Jason and offered some to him but he refused. After that Dean and Jason continued onward with Hailey following behind them.
The Campsite
About an hour had passed until the sun was setting in the sky and the group had reached a large clearing in the woods. Roy came to a stop in the middle of it. "This is it, Black Water Ridge."
"What coordinates are we at?" Sam asked.
Roy pulled his GPS out of his jacket. "Thirty-five minus One-Eleven."
Dean and Jason walked up beside Sam and looked around seeing nothing in sight, "You hear that?" Dean asked.
The brothers all listened carefully and didn't hear anything at all, the area around them was filled with nothing, but complete silence.
"Yeah," Sam replied. "Whole lotta nothing."
"I can't even hear any crickets," Jason said.
"I'm gonna take a look around," Roy spoke up behind them, putting his GPS back in his jacket pocket.
"You shouldn't go off by yourself," Sam warned him.
Roy chuckled sarcastically. "That's sweet. Don't worry about me."
Roy walked past the brothers and walked ahead of the group. Dean turned back to Hailey and her brother and said, "Alright everybody stays together. Let's go,"
With that, the group follows behind Roy. After another few minutes of walking, Roy calls out, "Hailey! Over here!"
The group quickly ran to where Roy's voice came from to find Tommy's ransacked and destroyed campsite. The camper's belongings were strewn around, the tents were covered in claw marks, sliced through in several spots with bloodstains scattered around on the fabric.
"Oh my god," Hailey gasped, her hands covering her mouth in shock.
"Looks like a grizzly," Roy guessed, looking around the campsite.
"Tommy?" Hailey called out, she removed her pack and dropped it to the ground before heading deeper into the campsite. "Tommy!"
Sam hurried over to Hailey, shushing her to avoid attracting whatever could've done this back to the campsite. It could still be around and he didn't want to risk bringing it to them. They still had no idea what they were dealing with.
"Why?" Hailey asked in frustration.
"Whatever caused this could still be out there and we don't need to bring it to us," Jason explained, walking up behind her.
"Sam! Jason!" Dean called out from the other side of the camp. Both brothers headed over to Dean to find him crouched down, inspecting some marks on the dirt. Sam knelt down behind Dean to get a better look at them. Jason remained standing looking down at the marks with them.
"The bodies were dragged from the campsite. But here, the tracks just vanished. It's weird." Dean said, pushing up off his knees to stand upright.
"This definitely ain't no Skin Walker or Black Dog," Jason pointed out.
In agreement that they were even more confused than before as to what they were dealing with, the brothers went back to the campsite where everyone else was. Dean noticed Hailey picking up a broken satellite phone, on the verge of tears. He made his way over and knelt down beside her. Hailey quickly steeled her gaze, not wanting anyone to see her cry.
"Hey, he could still be alive," Dean said in an attempt to comfort her. She glanced at Dean giving him a disbelieving look.
"Help! Please, someone, help me!" A voice screamed out from the forest. Everyone quickly ran to where the voice was coming from, but when they got there they found nothing.
"It seemed like it was coming from around here, didn't it?" Hailey asked.
Sam looked up at the trees for a second until his eyes widened in realization. "Everybody back to camp,"
With that, everyone hurriedly ran back to the campsite to find that all of their things were gone. Every single bag Roy, Hailey, and Ben brought was missing. What was even worse, however, was that the bag containing the boy's weapons was also gone. Now, they had nothing to fight whatever was out there.
"Our packs!" Hailey exclaimed.
"So much for my GPS and my satellite phone," Roy muttered angrily.
"What the hell is going on?" Hailey wondered aloud.
Looking at the scene in front of them, a thought crossed Sam's mind. Thinking back to everything that has occurred, he had a hunch that he knew what they were dealing with. But there was only one way to be sure.
"It's smart," Sam announced, looking back at his brothers. "It wants to cut us off so we can't call for help,"
"You mean, someone. Some nut job out there just stole all our gear," Roy argued in disbelief.
Sam shook his head at Roy and headed over to Dean and Jason, making sure to keep his voice low. "I need to speak with you two...in private." With that, the brothers headed off to a corner of the campsite where they were out of earshot from everyone else. Sam held his hand out to Dean. "Okay, let me see Dad's Journal."
"Okay," Dean reached into his jacket and pulled out their father's journal, handing it to Sam.
Sam took the journal from Dean, opened it up, and flipped through the pages until he stopped on the page titled, Wendigo, showing it to his brothers. "Alright, check that out."
"Oh come on," Dean scoffed, chuckling in disbelief. "Windigos are in the Minnesota woods or Northern Michigan."
"Yeah, what hunter has ever heard of one being out this far west?" Jason questioned.
"Guys, think about it, the claws, the way it can mimic a human voice," Sam listed of the multitude of things.
"Oh, goddammit," Jason huffed, realizing Sam was right. They were facing a Wendigo.
"Well, then this is useless," Dean said holding up his pistol.
"We got to get these people to safety," Sam said, giving the journal back to Dean, who agreed. Jason nodded and the boys went back to face the others. Sam cleared his throat and began to speak. "All right, listen up. It's time to go. Things have gotten more complicated."
"What?" Hailey asked.
"Kid, don't worry," Roy grumbled, rolling his eyes. "Whatever's out there I think I can handle it."
"It's not me I'm worried about. If you shoot this thing you're just gonna make it mad, we have to leave now." Sam opposed.
"One, you're talking nonsense, and two, you're in no position to give anybody orders."
"Relax, man" Jason cut in, making Roy look at him with a raised eyebrow.
Sam continued. "We never should have let you come out here in the first place. We're trying to protect you,"
"You protect me?" Roy questioned walking up to Sam. "I was hunting these woods when your mommy was still kissing you goodnight."
"It's a damn-near-perfect hunter. It's smarter than you. And it's gonna hunt you down and eat you alive unless we get your stupid sorry ass out of here." Sam spat back.
Roy laughed in Sam's face, leaning in closer. "You know you're crazy right?"
"Yeah?" Sam questioned. "You ever hunt-"
Before things could get out of hand the older brothers went over to their little brother and grabbed him, pushing him away from Roy. The last thing that was needed was starting any unnecessary conflict.
"Bro, chill out," Jason said.
"Sam, cool it," Dean told him.
Hailey walked over to them and said, "Stop it. Everybody just stop. Look Tommy might still be alive. And I'm not leaving here without him."
The brothers glanced at each other, since they can't get everyone out of these woods then they had to settle in and set up a defense against the Wendigo.
"All right," Dean said.
"Look, it's getting late. This thing is a good hunter in the day, and an even better one at night," Jason stated.
"We'll never beat it, not in the dark," Dean added. "So we'll need to settle in and protect ourselves."
"How?" Hailey asked.
"We have our ways," Jason said.
Forest - Night
Hailey and her brother sat next to each other by the fire, as she tended to it. Dean and Jason were drawing ancient Anasazi symbols to keep the Wendigo away. Roy looked at them in disbelief as they did, believing they were crazy but they didn't care. The symbols would provide more protection than Roy's rifle.
Hailey glanced at the symbols that they drew into the ground then turned to look at Dean and his brother, "One more time that's-"
"Anasazi Symbols," Dean told her again.
"It's for protection. As long as they're there then the Wendigo won't be able to cross over them," Jason explained.
Roy snickered, shaking his head. Dean glanced up to the man, an eyebrow raised. "Nobody likes a skeptic, Roy,"
"Really?"
Jason rolled his eyes, sighing in annoyance, and just continued drawing the symbols. When the brothers finished they got up and walked over to Sam. Dean sat down next to him on a rock while Jason just sat on the ground in front of them.
"You want to tell us what's going on in that freaky head of yours?" Dean asked.
Sam sighed. "Dean-"
"You're not okay Sam, don't keep saying you are, because you're not," Jason said, interrupting him.
"You're like a powder keg, man. It's not like you." Dean said, concerned for his youngest brother. "I'm supposed to be the belligerent one, remember?"
Sam didn't say anything for a second then muttered out, "Dad's not here. I mean we know that for sure, right? He would have left us a message, a sign right?"
Jason nodded, "Yeah, you're right."
"And to tell you the truth, I don't think Dad's been to Lost Creek," Dean admitted.
Sam turned his head and looked at Dean. "Then let's get these people back to town, and let's hit the road. Go find Dad."
"Not happening, Sam," Jason refused, "Not until this thing is dead,"
Sam turned his head staring directly at Jason. "Come on Jason, you wanna find Dad just as much as I do."
Jason nodded. "I do, but I'm not leaving until the monster out there is dead."
"Why are we even here?" Sam asked. Dean got up from where he was sitting and crouched in front of Sam next to Jason. He reached into his jacket, pulling out their Dad's journal, and holding it right in front of him.
"This is why…" Dean began. He tapped the cover of the book with his index finger. "This book. This is Dad's single most valuable possession. Everything he knows about every Evil thing is in here, and he's passed it onto the tree of us."
"So, you think Dad wants us to pick up where he left off?" Jason questioned.
"Yeah," Dean nodded. "You know saving people, hunting things…the family business."
Sam couldn't grasp any of this so he buried his face in his hands in frustration. "That makes no sense. Why-Why doesn't he just call us? Why doesn't he tell us what he wants, tell us where he is?"
Dean nor Jason had an answer to that question.
"I don't know, little bro, but I wish we knew," Jason admitted.
"Me too," Dean agreed, pulling in a deep breath. "But the way I see it, Dad's given us a job to do, and I intend to do it."
"Same here, because if we just let this thing live then eventually more campers could die and we're not gonna just let that happen," Jason said.
"Guy's...no, I gotta find Dad, I gotta find Jessica's killer...It's the only thing I can think about," Sam said looking at his brothers with sad eyes.
Jason placed a hand on Sam's shoulder to comfort him. "Sam, we'll find them, we promise,"
"Thanks," Sam smiled at Jason who removed his hand from his shoulder.
"Anytime," he nodded.
A moment of silence passed before Dean spoke again. "Sam listen, you've got to prepare yourself. This search could take a while, and all that anger, you can't keep it burning over the long haul. It's gonna kill you." Sam looked at Dean for a moment processing his words, then nodded. Dean continued. "You got to have patience, man."
Sam looked down at the ground for a second then looked back up at Dean and Jason, "How do you both do it? How does Dad do it?" Sam asked, chucking a little.
"Well, for one, them," Dean answered, glancing at Hailey and her brother. Sam looked over to see Hailey holding his brother's hand in comfort as they sat together by the fire.
"Dean's right. I mean our family is already screwed in so many ways, so maybe we can save some others," Jason said, "It helps to put our minds at ease knowing that the people we save will live to see another day."
"I'll tell you what else helps," Dean said then paused, making Sam turn his head back to face him. "Killing as many evil sons of bitches as we possibly can."
Jason chuckled a little at Dean's words as did Sam. A moment of silence followed before the brothers heard a voice in the distance followed by the sound of a twig breaking and the blood-curdling scream of someone shouting for help. "Help me!"
They quickly got up back onto their feet and turned on their flashlights, looking through the trees for any sight on the Wendigo. Dean cocked his pistol while Jason went over to Hailey and her brother to protect them.
"Both of you, don't move, as long as we remain inside the circle you'll be fine," Jason told them to which Hailey and Ben both nodded, clinging to each other.
"Help!" The voice yelled again. The boys tried to spot the Wendigo but failed to see any movement in the trees.
"It's trying to draw us out," Dean stated. "Everybody just stay cool, stay put."
"Inside the magic circle?" Roy questioned, mocking the only thing keeping the Wendigo from killing them all.
"Help! Help Me! Pleaaaahhh!" What followed after those words were the sounds of a vicious roar.
"Okay, that is no grizzly," Roy's voice shook as he raised his rifle.
Ben brought his sister over to him, holding her hand tightly. "It's okay. You'll be alright I promise," Hailey reassured her brother.
The sounds began to get louder, the growling intensified, and they could see the bushes around them rustling. Dean, Jason, and Roy turned in the direction the sound came from then they saw something run past them through the bushes. Roy opened fire hitting the bushes, but none of them hitting the monster. Then they heard it from their left, Roy immediately began blindly firing his rifle again until one of his bullets, actually hit the Wendigo making it let out a yowl of pain.
"I hit it," Roy announced proudly, running out of the circle to go after it.
"Roy, no! Roy!" Dean yelled, but Roy ignored him and continued to run after the beast. With a huff, Dean quickly turned to Ben and Hailey, "Don't move."
As Dean headed to go after Roy, Hailey brought her brother close to her, holding the torch in her hand as a defense against the Wendigo.
Jason quickly turned to Sam. "Stay with them!"
"Yeah," Sam quickly nodded, watching as Jason ran after Dean and Roy.
"Guys! Come Back!" Jason shouted through the trees as he ran to catch up with them.
Luckily Dean didn't go far, so he managed to find him rather quickly. The two of them stayed close together on their way to find Roy before he got himself killed. He had no idea what he was facing, and no clue that his gun wouldn't do the job of killing it. The only thing bullets would do is just piss it off.
"It's over here!" Roy exclaimed, diving deeper into the woods. Dean and Jason stopped short, not wanting to go any further. It wouldn't do anybody any good if they were injured right now in the process of trying to get Roy back.
"Roy!" Dean called after him.
"Roy, come back!" Jason shouted.
"It's in the tree!" Roy stated, stopping where he heard the wendigo only for it to appear above Roy.
In the blink of an eye, it appeared right above him, grabbed him, and snapped his neck, and carried his corpse up into the trees. Upon hearing the sound of bones cracking and trees rustling, Jason and Dean looked at each other with wide eyes.
"Shit!" Jason hissed. "That can't be good!"
"Roy?!" Dean called out to him as they ran in the direction his voice had come from last. But once they arrived, he was gone.
With no other options left, they headed back to the campsite, filling everyone in on what happened. A horrified Hailey held her brother close to her, clutching him tighter than ever before as the reality of their situation began to sink in. Either Roy was right and they were trapped out here with three crazy men claiming monsters were real, or, monsters were real. As much as Hailey hated the very idea, she couldn't help but trust these people. There was just something about them.
The night passed and turned into day with everyone sitting around the campfire. Eventually Hailey and Ben nodded off, but they woke soon after. No one could rest easy. With every breeze that rustled the trees surrounding them, they flinched, more on edge than ever.
Sam found himself sitting by a tree stump on the far end of the campsite, his father's journal laid open in his lap. He'd been flipping through the pages, but eventually ended up staring off into the thick brush. Dean stood at the other end, keeping a lookout in the trees to see if the Wendigo was coming back. Ben, Hailey, and Jason stayed seated at the fire.
"I mean, these types of things, they aren't supposed to be real," Hailey mumbled incredulously.
"I wish I could tell you differently," Dean replied after inspecting the claw marks on a tree behind him. He went over to Hailey, kneeling in front of her picking up a stick off the ground.
"How do you know about this stuff?" Hailey asked as Dean broke the stick in his hands to pieces.
"It kind of runs in our family," Jason told her.
Dean got back up to his feet and turned around to see Sam walking up to them. Jason, Dean, Ben, and Hailey got up to their feet as he approached.
"Hey…so, we've got half a chance in the daylight, and I for one… wanna kill this evil son of a bitch," Sam said.
"Well, hell you know I'm in," Dean smiled.
"Same here," Jason said, then glanced at Ben and Hailey, "We should tell you a little about wendigos since we don't have the time to get you out of here and we can't risk you two going out with us without at least knowing how to protect yourselves."
"That's probably a good idea," Hailey said, nodding in agreement.
Sam went over to them, pulled the journal out of his coat, flipped to the page on wendigo's, and began explaining to them about the basics on the monster. "Wendigo is a Cree Indian word. It means Evil that Devours."
"They're also hundreds of years old," Dean cut into the conversation. "Each one was once a man, sometimes an Indian or other times a frontiersman or a miner or hunter," He explained as he walked past them carrying a red canteen in his hand, walking to one of the tents and picked up an empty glass bottle off the ground, before turning back to them.
"How does a man turn into one of these things?" Hailey asked.
Jason decided to explain this one before either of them could, "Well all the stories are the same. During some bad winter, a guy finds himself starving, cut off from supplies or help so he becomes a cannibal to survive by eating members of his tribe or camp."
"Like the Donner Party?" Ben said.
"That's right," Sam nodded then continued. "Cultures all over the world believe that eating human flesh can give a man certain abilities: Speed, Strength, Immortality."
"If you eat enough of it. Over the years, you become this less-than-human thing. You're always hungry." Dean added.
"If that's true then how can Tommy still be alive?" Hailey asked. Dean, Jason, and Sam exchanged glances before turning back to the two.
"You're not gonna like it," Dean warned.
"Tell me," Hailey insisted.
Jason sighed, "Fine...more than anything, a Wendigo knows how to last long winters without food. It hibernates for years at a time, and when it's awake it keeps its victims alive. It stores them so it can feed whenever it wants. If Tommy's still alive then it's keeping him somewhere dark, hidden, and safe. And we got to track it and kill it."
"And then how do we stop it?" Hailey asked.
"Well, guns are useless, so are knives. Basically…" Dean held up a handmade Molotov in his hand. "We gotta torch this sucker."
Forest
The group traveled through the woods following the claw marks the Wendigo had made in the trees, hoping they would lead them to its hideout. Dean walked in front carrying the Molotov he made, with Hailey, Jason, Ben, and Sam behind him.
As they were walking Sam and Jason both noticed something odd about the claw marks that they were following.
"Dean!" Jason called his brother over. Dean, along with Hailey and Ben, backtracked to them, looking at the marks Jason pointed to. "We should've known something was off about these claw prints, they were so clear and distinct."
"They were almost too easy to follow," Sam added, chuckling, realizing that the Wendigo was luring them into a trap.
Suddenly the group heard a loud growl from where they were standing, everyone looked around frantically trying to get a fix on the Wendigo. Hailey looked around but out of nowhere blood leaked onto her shoulder, she looked up to see a body above her falling, she quickly jumped out of the way, and the body of Roy fell down to the ground right in front of them. Sam quickly went over to Hailey, while Jason went over to Roy's body.
"You okay?" Sam asked to which Hailey nodded.
"Damnit, his neck's broken," Jason announced after examining Roy's body. Suddenly, the growling was getting closer, the group had to move.
"Run, run, run, go, go go!" Dean yelled.
The group began running as fast as they could. However, as they were running Ben slipped and fell to the ground. Sam turned around running back to Ben, Jason saw and went to help him too. They helped him up off the ground.
"Come on man let's go," Jason said, getting Ben back on his feet. Suddenly Hailey's scream filled Sam, Jason, and Ben's ears. They ran to where they heard it from only to find that Dean and Hailey were gone.
"Hailey!" Ben yelled out, while Jason picked up a broken piece of Dean's Molotov.
"Dean!" Jason screamed.
Sam, Jason, and Ben were again walking through the woods in search of their families. Now that Dean and Hailey were taken they had to find them as soon as possible.
"If it keeps its victims alive, why would it kill Roy?" Ben asked.
"Honestly? I think it's because Roy shot at it, pissed it off," Sam said.
As they were walking Ben noticed something weird sitting on the ground, he leaned down and picked it up and realized it was an M&M. "They went this way," Ben said, turning his head to Dean and Jason who ran over to him. Ben showed them the M&M trail and Sam chuckled, Dean left them a trail for them to follow.
"It's better than breadcrumbs," Sam chuckled.
"It's better than anything at all, really," Jason said.
Abandoned Mine
The M&M trail that Dean left for them led the group to an abandoned mine, the group stopped at the boarded-up entrance to look at the sign written in front of it.
WARNING! DANGER!
DO NOT ENTER
EXTREMELY TOXIC MATERIAL
As tempting as it was to heed the warning on the sign, Hailey and Dean were in there and none of them were just gonna leave them to die. Jason, Sam, and Ben went in through the gap in the boarded-up entrance. When they were inside, Sam and Jason grabbed their flashlights and turned them on so all three of them could see their way inside the mining tunnel.
They didn't get far when they heard growing coming from the Wendigo. Jason quickly grabbed Ben and the group hid behind the entrance to another tunnel in the mine, they turned their flashlights off so the beast couldn't see them. They remained quiet and peeked their heads out to see the Windigo walking past them towards the way they came in, it was most likely heading back out to find them and either kill them or bring them back here so it can store them then feast on them. Ben was about to whisper something but Jason quickly placed a hand on his mouth before he could. Jason brought a finger up to his lips telling Ben to be quiet. The Wendigo probably had great hearing and could probably hear them even if they're whispering, so they weren't taking any chances.
When they were sure it was gone they went deeper into the tunnel to search for Dean and Hailey, maybe even Tommy hopefully. As they were searching the tunnels Sam and Ben stopped in their track when they heard the sound of the ground creaking, they looked down at their feet and realized that the surface below them was wood. Before they could do anything the wood collapsed below them, Jason's eyes widened when he saw Sam and Ben fall.
"Oh, shit!" Jason gasped, rushing to where they fell, and looked down through the hole. Thankfully, he saw them moving around. "Guys, are you okay?"
"Yeah, we're fine," Sam replied, while Ben nodded.
"Good," Jason sighed in relief.
While he was glad that Sam and Ben were okay, but he was secretly also glad to know they weren't injured because if Hailey and Dean were hurt along with either of them then getting them out would be even harder and he didn't want anyone else dying today.
Without a second thought, Jason jumped down into the hole and landed behind Sam and Ben like Spider-Man. He looked past them and his eyes widened, "Holy shit," Jason muttered.
Ben and Sam looked in Jason's direction and their eyes widened too. In front of them, Dean and Hailey were strung up. The group got up and ran over to their loved ones, Sam and Jason went over to Dean while Ben went to check on his sister.
Jason and Sam grabbed Dean and shook him to try and wake him up. "Dean, wake up,"
"Hailey, wake up," Ben said, trying to get his sister to wake up.
"Dean-Dean-Dean," Jason said, repeatedly to the unconscious Dean. Dean's eyes snapped open, he let out a groan before looking at his little brothers and smiling a little.
"Hey, you okay?" Sam asked.
"Ugh, yeah." Dean groaned.
Both brothers were relieved to see their oldest brother still alive. After confirming that Dean was okay, Jason went over to Ben, who was still trying to wake his sister up.
"Is she still alive?" Jason asked.
"Yeah, she's got a pulse," Ben nodded, turning his attention back to his sister. "Hailey, Hailey, wake up."
Hailey's eyes slowly opened to see her brother. Jason smiled when he saw her awake. He pulled out his knife and cut her down while Sam was cutting down Dean.
"Gotcha," Sam told Dean as he helped him sit down on a rock. He groaned in pain. Jason and Ben sat Hailey down next to Dean then Jason went over to his brother and knelt down to him.
"Hey, are you sure you're alright?" Jason asked.
"Yeah, yeah," Dean nodded. "Where is it?"
"It's gone for now," Sam answered.
When Ben was done cutting the ropes off Hailey's wrists, they both looked in front of them and saw another body of a young man strung up. They immediately got up and went over to it. Hailey began crying.
"Tommy...Tommy," Hailey sobbed. She reached her hand out placing her hand on Tommy's cheek, but the moment her hand touched him his head shot up letting out a gasp of air. "Ahh" Hailey jumped back in shock at Tommy's sudden movement. Seeing her brother alive, she quickly went back to him. She turned her head to Jason, frantic. "Cut him down."
Jason pulled out his knife and cut Tommy down, while he was doing that Dean noticed the stolen packs were right beside him, so he opened them up to find anything useful. Tommy looked up, surprise in his eyes upon seeing his family there.
"Hailey. Ben." Tommy breathed out.
"It's okay, we're gonna get you home," Hailey reassured her injured brother.
"Hey, check these out," Dean called. Everyone turned their attention to him, seeing him holding two flare guns.
"Flare guns," Sam said.
"Those will work," Jason added, chuckling. Dean smirked at his brothers, twirling the flare guns in his hands.
The group was making their way out of the mine, Sam and Dean were in front carrying the flare guns in their hands, while Jason walked behind them with Hailey and Ben who were carrying the injured Tommy. Suddenly the sound of monstrous growling filled the silence in the caves, making the group halt.
"Looks like someone's home for supper," Dean said.
"We'll never outrun it," Hailey muttered.
Dean looked back at Hailey, seeing the desperation to get her family to safety written on her face. He exchanged looks with his brothers then asked. "You guys thinking what I'm thinking?"
"Yeah I think so," Sam nodded.
"Maybe," Jason guessed.
Dean turned to Hailey and her family, "Alright, stay with Sam and Jason they're gonna get you out of here."
"What are you gonna do?" Hailey asked. Dean winked at Hailey then ran into the tunnels.
"It's chow time, you freakin' bastard! Yeah, that's right! Bring it on, baby! I taste good!" Dean yelled in an attempt to distract the Wendigo to give them time to get Hailey and her family out of the mine.
Sam turned to Jason, "Jason, stay with them."
Jason nodded, Sam walked to one of the tunnels to make sure it was safe, when he was sure it was, he went back to them. "All right, come on. Hurry."
The group followed behind Sam. Meanwhile, Dean was walking through another one of the tunnels still yelling out to the Wendigo. "Hey! Hey, you want some white meat, bitch! I'm right here!"
Sam and the others were wandering through the tunnels, searching for the way out. They could hear Wendigo's growling and it was awfully close to them and the flare-gun in Sam's hand only had one shot so they really had to make it count. As they were walking Sam was growing more worried about Dean, he was gonna be fighting that thing all on his own and he had to do something. Sam quickly looked through the two tunnels to make sure the windigo wasn't near then turned to Jason, Hailey, and her brothers.
"Jason, get them out of here," Sam instructed.
"What?!" Jason said, incredulously.
"Sam, no," Hailey argued.
"We're not gonna leave you and Dean both alone to fight that thing all on your own," Jason opposed.
"Guys, just go!" Sam ordered, "Jason just get them to safety, please,"
"Ugh, fine, but when I get them to safety I'm coming back to help you guys," With that Jason and the others went down one tunnel while Sam went down the opposite one.
Sam took cover behind the entrance to one of the caves and waited for the Wendigo to walk past him so he could shoot it in the back. "Come on. Come on." Sam mumbled to himself.
When it seemed like it was getting closer, the sounds of its footsteps suddenly went silent. A moment later a loud sound came from behind him, Sam turned around and recoiled when he saw the Wendigo standing right behind him. The Wendigo roared at Sam, he quickly turned around and fired his only shot at the beast, but it quickly dodged the blast. Now that he was out of ammo, Sam quickly got up and ran to catch up with Jason, Hailey, and her brothers.
"Sam!" Hailey yelled up as he and the others saw him running up behind them.
"Sammy!" Jason yelled.
"Come on. Hurry, Hurry, Hurry! Go!" Sam yelled, pushing them. The Wendigo was right behind them and they needed to run. They kept running through the tunnels until they stopped at a dead end and they couldn't run anywhere else because the Wendigo was right behind them.
"Get behind us!" Jason ordered as he and Sam got in front of Hailey and her brothers as the Wendigo found them, as soon as its eyes were on them it walked closer to them, boxing them in. It then let out a loud roar but before anything Dean ran up behind them raising his flare gun at it.
"Hey!" Dean yelled, getting its attention. The Wendigo turned around to face Dean, he quickly fired the flare into its stomach. Everyone watched as the wendigo went up in flames, then fell to the ground burning into ashes. "Not bad, huh?"
"Yeah...that was a close one," Jason said, relieved.
"You can say that again," Sam said.
They all looked at the burning Wendigo corpse, the job was done. The Wendigo was dead and wouldn't be hurting anyone else ever again.
Ranger Station - Night
After getting out of the mine and back to the Ranger Station, one of the rangers called 911 and an ambulance came where Tommy was put inside where his wounds were tended to by paramedics.
Jason sat on the hood of the Impala while Dean and Hailey were talking. Sam and Ben were lying to the sheriffs about what happened to Tommy. They were telling them that a large grizzly attacked his campsite and Tommy was the only one to survive.
"So, really, I don't know how to thank you," Hailey said. Dean sat down next to Jason on the Impala's hood and looked at Hailey expecting her to make a move on him.
"Does he have to cheapen the moment?" Hailey asked Jason with a laugh.
"Yeah, always," Jason grinned.
A paramedic walked up behind Hailey, "You riding with your brothers?"
Hailey nodded in response to her, looking at Sam and Ben as they walked over. She smiled at her brother. "You ready?"
"Yeah," Ben replied.
"Let's go," Hailey told him. Ben nodded. Before they left, Hailey stepped over to Dean and placed a kiss on his cheek. "I hope you and your brothers find your father."
Dean nodded at her, then she and Ben headed to the ambulance where Tommy was waiting. Dean watched as Hailey spoke to her brothers, the three of them smiling at each other. The way she cared for them, the way she protected them, it reminded Dean a lot of himself, he pretty much raised Jason and Sam. John wasn't there for them much so it fell to Dean to look after his two little brothers. Hailey was just like him in so many ways.
Sam sat down next to Dean on the other side of the Impala's hood and all three of them watched as Hailey and her brothers left in the ambulance.
"Man, I hate camping," Dean said out of nowhere.
"I'm never going camping for as long as I live after all this," Jason said.
"Me too," Sam agreed.
"Sam you know we're gonna find Dad right?" Dean asked.
Sam sighed, nodding. "Yeah, I know,"
"But in the meantime…" Sam said, looking at Dean. "...I'm driving."
"Heh, heh, Dean after all Sam has done today, I'd say he's earned it," Jason said supporting Sam.
Seeing as how Jason was right that Sam has earned the right to drive the impala he reached into his pocket and pulled his keys out then handed them to Sam. Sam took the keys from Dean's hand then got up off the hood and went into the driver's seat, Jason got into the backseat, then Dean got into the passenger seat.
When the brothers were all in, Sam started up the Impala and they were back on the road to continue in their search for their Dad.
