Panting along through the city I was quickly wondering where she could be.
"Kiki!" I said aloud, standing in the middle of the park, looking around I could only see the streetlights illuminate the road, with an occasional flicker I was unsure as to where to look next.
Standing there, I continued on further into the city, unsure as to where Kiki was.
After walking past a block or two I began to wonder if she had already made her way back yet.
This thought quickly vanished from my mind as I kicked something.
"Huh?" I said confused, looking down to what I had kicked was a phone, it sat there on the hard pavement with a light crack going from side to side, curious I leaned down to pick it up.
Looking at it, I was a plain black phone, slightly roughed up but nothing to bad from the looks of it.
As I stood there I curiosity had got the better of me, and with a little pause I turned it on and was taken back with what I saw as a pang of worry hit my chest.
Looking to the screen I saw both Kiki and Jenny standing on the boardwalk, Kiki being held by her sister in a caring hug.
Looking around I quickly began to see if Kiki was within view, my first thought was that she had simply dropped her phone, but a small nagging sense of worry was still lingering in the back of my mind.
"Kiki!" I shouted out hoping for a response, getting nothing I began to quickly jog down the street looking left and right for any sight of her.
After a steady jog making my way closer to the edge of the city I was beginning to think that she did drop her phone, hoping that she had made it home, back with her family.
I really wished that was the case.
"Ahhh!" Came a shriek, just as I was about to turn a corner I nearly jumped as I heard it.
"Kiki!?" I shouted out as I looked towards where the scream came from, I saw several old buildings, all of which looked abandoned, and saw an alleyway that easily gave me a way through.
Going into a full sprint I ran through an alleyway and quickly found myself toppling over several old garbage cans as I did so, quickly getting through I found myself standing in a small opening looking around.
"Where is she." I said in a panic, looking to my surroundings I immediately noticed several other paths from between the surrounding buildings leading in opposite directions.
"Help!" Shouted Kiki, looking to where Her voice came from I saw Kiki run out of one of the paths with fear as if running from some monster.
"Matthew!" She cried out sprinting to me, as she did so I quickly raised my arms out as if to catch her, but I was taken back from what saw chasing her.
"Run!" As she ordered so, a deformed creature bursted out from the path following her, and with a disgusting screech it stopped to look to me, and with a sudden burst of speed pounced to us leaving me still with fear.
"Come on!" Kiki shouted as she took hold of my arm and pulled me with her through another alleyway, pulling me with her as I found myself running for my life.
After several seconds of running I finally took hold of the situation and looked to Kiki.
She ran in front of me with her entire body covered in sweat, her breathing was raspy as if she had been running this entire time, and her face was mixed in both pure fear and exhaustion.
Taking a look over my shoulder the monster was following behind us, it however was slowed from the narrow alley as it was too large to catch up to us but with an inhuman rage it followed on.
As we neared the end of the path with Kiki taking the lead she quickly looked left and right before looking to me.
"This way!" She said wheezing, she looked just about ready to collapse, her eyes sagging with exhaustion as she darted to the left, following behind her I saw that we were back on one of the main streets that connected back to the boardwalk, and the same road that would pass my home.
"Nraaaghh!" Came the creatures inhuman screech, turning around I saw the beast burst out of the alleyway leaving the buildings on either side of it to slightly crack as it did so, into the light fully in view giving me a chilling view of it.
It was coloured with several blotches of different colours as it followed on with five misshaped limbs the largest taking being an arm while three of the others were used as grossly disproportioned legs as all three were different in size and shape.
Looking in our direction as we both tried to escape it, it continued its hunt.
Turning away from it I kept on running, quickly catching up with Kiki I quickly noticed her condition and began to worry.
Wheezing beside me she looked absolutely exhausted, her arms flailing from side to side as if trying to keep a sense of momentum for her, her face covered in sweat that had trailed down to her tank top causing it to be soaked as it clung to her.
Feeling worried and knowing she couldn't keep this up I looked back at the monster. Without a sense of exhaustion it kept on us, slowly but surely closing the distance.
"Matthew...we have to...keep going..." Gasping and heaving beside me, Kiki trying to keep an eye on me, trying to encourage me to keep up but with her current condition, I was more worried for her.
But as we made our way forward, even with the monstrosity following us, Kiki still found the energy to take the lead and push forward and made a full hearted lead making it well around the corner before I could, but then my heart sank at what I heard next.
A loud crash could be heard as soon as she turned the corner and a pained cry caught my attention, then with a burst of speed made it around the corner in what to me looked like a blur, but even then, Kiki laying on the ground was clear and frightening.
"Kiki!" I called out, seeing her sprawled there next to a fallen garbage can wincing in pain, her hands holding her left leg.
Reaching down to grab her I instinctually grabbed hold of the lid of the garbage can also. Lifting her up swiftly to her feet giving her full support for her leg she looked to me with scared pleading eyes.
"Just go..." With a quiet voice, she gave me that choice, then with the coming footsteps of the creature with its shrieks I knew that it would be on us any second. Knowing this Kiki could only try think of me and gave me a look telling that it was okay.
Knowing that she was okay with her sacrifice, and knowing that the creature would turn the corner any second, I acted on instinct.
A tearful expression shown past as I looked to her smile.
"No!" I yelled, turning around holding the flimsy piece of metal in hand as some makeshift shield I held her behind me waiting as the creature bolted around the corner.
Turning the corner the creature doubled back surprised seeing both her and I standing our ground, looking up to it, it stood roughly six and a half feet tall, I was surprised to see that I stood in roughly equal height to it.
As we both stared at each other both standing still I quickly reacted with the first thing that came to mind.
"Ahhhh!" l I shrieked out waving the metal lid backwards, then with a hard swing I went forward to the creature, hitting it square in the side of its head.
"Nragh-" It screeched out only being stopped short as my metal lid made contact.
Reeling back and taking several steps away, shaking its head furiously after being struck the creature tumbled away.
Seeing this I quickly reached into my pocket grabbing hold of something, quickly taking it out I reached behind me and grabbed Kiki's hand.
"Huh?" She gasped looking down.
"Hurry." I whispered sternly before taking a step to the side.
"Matthew?" She questioned before falling silent. Making my way slowly away from Kiki the creature had finally regained itself, looking up to Kiki with a low, aggressive growl.
"Hey!" I shouted, waving my arm with the lid at it, seeing this it slowly followed me into the dimly lit street.
Looking right at it as it walked slowly under a flickering light I was shocked to see a familiar silhouette.
As it stood there in the shifting darkness I saw the same figure as the one I had seen days before, feeling a sense of shock I was swiftly taken out and of it as the creature charged at me.
"Wha-!" Being taken back at the sudden rush I could only back step away.
Quickly closing the distance it swung at me heavily with its largest arm, quickly ducking just barely dodging its attack I pulled away from the creature giving myself little distance from it.
As I gained what little distance as I could from it I saw that it was reeling in from its own attack, falling off balance from its grossly disproportioned body, seeing this I couldn't help but swallow whatever fear I felt and lunge forwards.
"Waaaa!" I shrieked making several quick swings at its body, each hit making it fall back slightly as if the force of each one caused it to lose its balance.
"Haha!" I laughed as confidence began to swell within me as I saw the monster losing ground, my confidence growing each time I landed a hit, but this feeling vanished as without even seeing it, I felt it's smaller hand reach out and grab hold of my shirt.
"Wha-?" I said before being thrown violently behind it, feeling myself fly through the air with great force I felt the sudden impact of the ground. Skidding across the hard pavement I felt pain run along the entirety of my left side as my entire side began to feel burnt.
"Aghh!" Screaming out in pain, rolling down the street until I finally stopped laying there in pain.
"Matthew!" Kiki shouted as I laid there unmoving, gasping for air as I held my left arm in pain.
Opening my eyes slowly as pain held them shut I looked to the creature, fear boiling in me at the thought of it charging me as I laid there defenceless. Instead I saw Kiki slowly backing away as the creature began to ease closer and closer to her. Standing there I took notice of the distance I was thrown, it was well over twenty feet, taking note of this intense fright growing more and more as the distance between her and the creature lessened.
"Kiki!" I growled out, clenching my teeth as I did so, the pain along my arm and leg causing me to struggle to get to my feet.
Feeling my entire left side burning I looked back up to the monster as it began to thrash lightly at the air, as if hesitant to make another attack, but seeing it grow closer and closer to her I began to panic.
Taking a step forward I could only limp weakly forward, too slow to make it to her I could only force myself to go on as each pathetic step forward was too little to make it to her in time.
"Ahh!" I screamed out with a raspy voice, forcing myself to quicken my pace I felt my foot brush against something.
Looking down my gaze fell on my makeshift weapon as it sat there at my feet, as a single thought crossed my mind, I knew it wasn't a smart one.
As the creature crept on to Kiki terrified gasps began to quicken as she could only limp away from it, trailing alongside the building she couldn't run any longer.
As the creature kept on forward both Kiki and the creature were both taken back as the lid had flew through the air hitting the creature in the back of its head.
Taking the strike without even flinching the creature could only quickly turn with a rage filled growl.
Standing there in the middle of the street I saw the creature take notice of me, injured, I knew that even with some makeshift weapon I knew that I couldn't win.
"That wasn't smart..." I said with a half smile.
Taking a sudden full force charge the monster made way to me, standing in place I was too tired to even try escape as I stood there still with a weak smile.
Everything began to go slower as my mind began to take in everything in front of me, the distance between the creature and I lessened, Kiki stood there looking like she was shouting out my name.
Standing still I didn't try move, I felt the slowness of the world leave as the natural state of it everything returned, as the disfigured creature began to grow closer I didn't feel fear.
I feel alive.
As the world returned to normal the shriek of the creature was all I could hear as it was right in front of me lifting its arm above its head ready to finish me off.
As its largest arm reached as far as it could go it violently shot it down to me, leaving a blinding flash to just appear before me as it attacked.
"Huh?" I said aloud, seeing a fist stop just in front of my face I was confused by the sudden change of the colours that hanged there.
"Pearl! Amethyst! Get them both out of here!" Said Garnet, standing to my right as her gauntlet covered fist pulled away from my face.
Pulling both her fists to her sides ready to attack she held an enraged twisted face as her teeth clenched tightly she charged forward leaving a sudden gust of wind and dirt to rise up.
Looking ahead to where Kiki stood I saw that Amethyst stood holding her tightly as she shot into the sky.
A smile shown briefly as I knew that I had kept her safe, I felt the tension in my body disappear knowing this, and the world began to become dull and dark as the last thing I felt was a soft embrace as I slid off into the darkness.
The plot thickens...
and that everyone is where the story will pick up its pace, and where Matthew's life will be in for a bumpy, even possibly dangerous ride.
