'Where am I?' A single thought left my mind, with a world taken in a blur I stood blinded.
"This way honey." A caring voice called out, looking around I saw a familiar figure standing ahead of me, even with looking like a featureless silhouette I knew who was calling for me.
"O-okay mom." I hesitantly called out not knowing where I was, just knowing that this all felt too real.
With a light sprint making it towards my mother I stopped, feeling exhausted and heavily out of breath, looking up though I was met with a still blurry view.
"Oh Matthew your all out of breath, don't strain yourself too much dear." Standing there I felt a wave of nostalgia wash over me, feeling like I've been here before, but with everything looking as it is, nothing came to me.
"Mom, when can we go home?" I chirped our quietly, looking down to my feet, I could only spin them lightly hoping to leave here as soon as possible.
"Just in a bit Matthew, I need to talk to the doctor about your medicine." She said with a worried tone, placing a hand on my shoulder she knelt down to me.
"Mommy will only be a little bit." She said while fixing my hair, being quiet while doing so.
"And please don't go wondering off." She said trying to hold back a light chuckle, this in turn made me smile silently.
As I stood there my mother began to walk away disappearing behind a closing door, leaving me to wait in the blurry, indistinguishable hallway.
Looking down both stretches of undefined hallways I was beginning to feel the sudden urge to sit down, to keep my head down and wait out this little time of loneliness, but a sudden cheering caught my attention from down to hall followed by a stiff fit of coughing.
With a sudden sense of curiosity I looked back to where my mother had gone, seeing a blurry mass take over where the door had previously been I looked back down the hallway.
Standing in place I swallowed whatever worry's I had and slowly took a step forward, following the coughs as even they had become quieter.
Taking each step forward I held on tightly to each of my elbows, looking hesitantly around trying to where my destination.
With the coughs and cheers changing from one another I knew that I was getting closer. Making my way to a half closed door I peeked into the room.
In the room sat a small figure in a hospital bed, alone and cheering on as they waved their arms around.
Staring at them I couldn't help but wonder what it was they were doing as some more cheers and light laughter escaped them as they swung their arms about. Looking on I began to grow more and more curious as to what they were holding, a pang of melancholic joy rose up from my chest as if happy to relive some time that had already past.
But before I could even try grasp at these flooding emotions I was taken back by a sudden fit of coughing. Paying attention to them I saw that whatever they were holding had fallen onto their laps as each hand was held up, being coughed into.
Seeing this curiosity took hold as I leaned in further as I tried to get a better look at what they were holding.
But as I leaned in the door let out a squeak causing me to gasp.
"Hello-?" Called out the bedridden figure as another stronger fit of coughs followed soon after.
Fearing being noticed I immediately pulled back behind the door as took several steps back into the hallway, I was just about to make my way back down the hallway to my mother but was cut short at what I heard next.
Soft sobbing came out of the room, standing in place I felt both curiosity and sympathy rise up as the colourless and formless world surrounded me.
Looking back to the door I slowly reached out to handle and pulled it open, seeing the same figure softly crying in bed.
"Hello?" I called out, standing in the doorframe the sniffling began to quietly subside as I looked to the figure in the bed.
"Hi..." The voice called back, the strength in their voice returning with the raspiness leaving as they did so.
"S-sorry for bothering you, I'll leave if you want." I shaked out, reaching for my neck and scratching it for comfort.
"...Please don't." They trailed out, sadness clinging to the words as they left their mouth. Noticing this I looked up and began to squint, trying to focus my eyes on them with little success.
With my vision strengthening on them I noticed their short auburn hair, short tussles facing upwards.
"What are you doing?" They said with a giggle, looking at them I shot back feeling embarrassed as I realized what I was doing.
"Sorry...it's just that I can't really see you good." I stood there shyly not knowing what to do.
"Then why not come closer?" They said with cheer, the feeling of sadness from their voice having disappeared altogether. Looking to them I hesitantly took a step forward along with another, then I quickly took the next few until I got to the foot of the bed they sat in.
Looking up to them I finally got a proper look at them, light freckles spotted their cheeks as they smiled, bright blue eyes stared at my own brown, a sudden rush of shyness took over as I looked away feeling as though I did something bad as my cheeks held a subtle red tinge.
Taking another peek I noticed the freckles lightly dotting their cheeks, the two toys sat I front of them.
"Wait..." I said quickly noticing the toys as excitement took me over.
"Are those Digicritters?" I asked astonished, then just as quickly with even more excitement they answered.
"Yeah! You like them too?" They shouted with a slight rasp.
"Of course, I watch it every Saturday!" I replied back, my shyness having been completely thrown out the window.
The shared excitement between the both of us causing a sudden uproar of energy, through all of this I couldn't take my eyes of the Digicitters in front of me.
"Is that an Angecrittermon, those are literally impossible to get!" I said inching closer to the toys.
"It can't be that impossible if I got one?" They said confused, looking to the angel that sat in front of them.
"He got released last week and everyone else bought them before I could..." I said sadly, looking down I noticed that the other toy was Beetlecrittermon, seeing it reminded me of the one I have at home.
"Wow." They replied simply, leaving me to return back inside of my shell.
"Well I'm sure that you will get one."
Looking up I looked them in the eye, a genuine smile shone as they held the two toys.
Taken back and left speechless I couldn't look away and was left stammering in place.
"T-thank y-you, it's-" stopping myself from continuing my nervous stuttering I forced myself to look away, calming myself and regaining what little composure I could build.
"Thank you." I replied simply. Looking back to them they could only let out a soft chuckle as I began to smile with them.
"Matthew?" Called out my mom, looking back to the door that sat open I couldn't help but look back to the stranger that sat in their bed.
"I-I'm sorry, so sorry but I have to go." With their expression changing from happiness to one of melancholy their smile began to lessen.
"Oh...okay." Sitting there they stared down to the two toys, a heaviness sitting on their eyes as no trace of their previous smile showing.
Slowly taking a step back, my sight never leaving them I stopped. Taking one step forward I kept on going until I stopped at their bedside, reaching out my hand I held in between us they looked to me puzzled.
"I-" said with slight panic as they looked to me confused.
"I'm Matthew Corals!" I blurted our quickly, hearing the calls of my mother sounding with more worry.
A blank look came over their face as they looked to me then my hand, then with a soft smile they took my hand with theirs as the handshake began.
"And I'm Penny, Penny Birch."
