A/N: Just wanted to add a little disclaimer for this conversation because I've been quite apprehensive about posting it and it's been sitting here for a couple weeks now. BUT there was an amazing Twitter thread this morning with Kelly (lifeofdarvey) asking a series of questions and this came up and I thought, I'm just gonna post and see what people think. I'm not opposed to kids but it's something I never personally headcannoned for Darvey so I wanted to try to explore that, hopefully delicately and no one is too offended by it. But obviously skip if you'd prefer to keep your hc! :)

Harvey looks forward to Friday evenings, and especially the weekends, from the moment he enters the office on a Monday morning. Sure, he loves being there with Mike and Rachel, but since Donna decided to take another job elsewhere, he finds himself looking forward to seeing her more, holding her and talking about their days. He hadn't thought it were possible, until he'd shared that with Donna one morning and she'd laughed and whispered that perhaps absence did indeed make the heart grow fonder. And though he laughed, he definitely didn't think the statement could be more true.

So when Friday evening arrived, Harvey was buzzing as he left the office, bidding a 'see you tomorrow' to Rachel and Mike. Every other weekend, the two couples tried to get together for brunch and spent a few hours after hanging out as a four. However, when Harvey got home that evening, Donna had come back from work and instead of telling Harvey about her day, had pressed a quick kiss to his lips and told him she felt unwell, asking him to cancel on their friends.

She'd sidestepped his hand when he went to check her forehead and said she'd see him upstairs later, leaving Harvey alone in the kitchen, confused.

When night turned to morning, she still didn't seem like herself so after ensuring she was okay - curled up under a blanket on the couch - Harvey set out on a long run before returning and occupying himself with various errands. He'd told himself he was making himself scarce to give her some quiet time to rest and relax, but in reality he needed to distract his mind from worrying about her.

Harvey makes it until late afternoon when he decides he needs to confront her, Donna not having said more than a few words to him all day.

"Donna?" Harvey checks all the rooms on the ground floor before quietly making his way up the stairs. Poking his head in their room and bathroom, he decides to check their spare room - the one they'd set up as a home office.

"Hey, didn't you hear me call?" Harvey quietly asks, entering the room to find her curled up on a chair they'd put in the corner by the window.

Donna turns to face him, her lips quivering in an attempt to flash him a smile which she can't force and Harvey knows then, that something is definitely wrong.

"Sorry…I was thinking…"

"What's going on Donna?" He crouches down beside her and is relieved when one of her hands finds his.

Donna takes a deep breath, knowing she'd been working herself up to talk to him all day. She's surprised he had lasted that long, leaving her alone for the entire day without asking what was running through her mind. One day, she'll thank him for his patience, which she knows definitely doesn't come easy, especially when she is concerned.

It's a few more moments of silence before she takes a deep breath and looks into his eyes.

"I was late…"

"Late?" He asks, confused, raising an eyebrow as he steps closer.

"Late." She doesn't expand but elongates the short word, the 't' sound coming out sharply.

Harvey's face pales as his eyes widen in understanding and he struggles to swallow a gulp. He's not sure what to do except tighten his grip on her hand.

"Are you…" He doesn't finish the sentence for her to know what he's asking.

"No, it came last night."

He nods before asking again, "And…are you ok?"

"Yes, I think I am…are you? I know we haven't," Donna pauses as she clears her throat, "talked about that…"

"No… I mean yeah, I'm ok."

They're both quiet for a moment, silently revelling in how much more they have to discuss with each other. Donna chews on her lips as she wrings her hands together.

"Seeing you with Lucy…" Harvey begins.

"I know…" She whispers, she can't deny her heart hadn't swelled at holding their godchild in her arms. How her mind hadn't wondered what it would be like to hold a child that's half hers and half Harvey's in her arms.

"But…"

"I'm not ready Harvey…"

Harvey nods, exhaling a a breath he hadn't realised he'd been holding.

"I'm not sure if I'll ever be ready." She whispers and she's looking at him as if this is the dealbreaker, like she's just said the eight words that will end them as they know it.

"I'm sorry."

"Donna…" Harvey takes another deep breath. He can't say he's ever thought much about children in the past. But with Donna? He thinks it could be a possibility, one day. He isn't closed off to the idea and if he'd want to go on that journey with someone, it would always be with Donna.

"I just…" She pauses, perhaps searching for the right answer or just looking for the support she craves. "I never imagined we'd end up like this," she gestures to their rings, their marriage and life together in Seattle, "I thought about us together so many times and never let my mind wander further than just being with you. And now that I have you, I don't know if I want to share you. Is that selfish?"

Donna had realised earlier on in the week that her period had not come, and her mind had been racing with fear and worry of the possibility that she and Harvey's family of two would be expanded by one in nine short months. It's not that she doesn't adore children, it's the fact that, as she just explained, she never considered that as part of her life and subsequent future with Harvey.

She knows all too well that the right set of events had to fall into place for Harvey to realise what she actually meant to him. Despite fantasising and wanting him for years, Donna could never truly let her mind wander to create fantasies of a life with him in her head. When she'd told him she wanted more, she only meant she wanted him and wanted him to want her in return. Now they're together, they've both thrown themselves into their relationship and re-exploring the world now they're together. Sometimes, Donna feels so preoccupied with her love for Harvey and enjoying this new reality with him, she forgets there are others in the world outside their bubble. And she's perfectly fine with that because she already feels complete, her heart is already full and bursting with her love for him.

Harvey nods, taking everything she's saying - and not saying - in. He too is so caught up in loving Donna, making up for all the time they lost. Despite knowing each other for well over a decade, aspects of their relationship are still very much new.

"I don't know if I'd be a good father."

Donna's eyes widen and she immediately goes to object, to tell him what a wonderful father he'd be. But she stops herself, knowing they promised each other long ago to share with each other and knows he needs to get this out himself.

"I resented my mom for so long… and my dad was, gone…" His voice cracks as he thinks of all the years he lost with his mother, "I'm so afraid that I'd mess up and our kid and you, would hate me. I'm not sure I could live with myself without you.."

Harvey trails off, thinking of an impossible future without Donna and how it nearly had become a reality due to his actions. And he actively works, like she does, to make their relationship work because as much as they love each other, they know how to press each others buttons. So the idea that he could do something that would cause a rift with any hypothetical child, and thus push Donna away, it scares him.

"You've learnt so much from the past Harvey, the fact that you're worried about that shows how far you've come. I don't think you could, or would, ever intentionally do something to hurt our child. Or me, not anymore."

She squeezes his hand for extra comfort.

"And for what it's worth, I think you'd be a wonderful father."

Harvey lets out a deep breath he hadn't realised he'd been holding.

"Thank you for always believing in me."

It's quiet for a few moments before he speaks again.

"If you're… we're never ready. It's okay, you're enough for me and you always have been."

Donna's eyes widen and she's not sure if her heart is beating incredibly fast or not at all at his words. Despite the cocky, occasionally hard exterior, Harvey is a true romantic and when it comes to her, he thinks himself quite the poet.

"But one day, if we want, we can have this conversation again?"

Donna looks at him, and she knows he's not expecting anything from her, for her to change her mind or grow more comfortable with the idea. All Harvey wants is for them to be happy together and she knows that she would never rule this out, not with him. Because like Harvey, she really does want everything, one day. Whatever that means for them.

"Yeah.." She nods because she feels, now that they've started the discussion, that they can work through and support both of their insecurities together. "One day."
