Chapter 10

"Hey Boss, can we get donuts along the way?" Blackjack's voice said in my mind.

"Ughh, for the sixth time Blackjack, we can't; Chiron wants me back in camp right now," I groaned.

"Fine fine," he replied, but I knew there was going to be a seventh.

We were currently flying towards camp, its borders still out of sight. Underneath us was a grassy plain with a few trees coming into view. The sun's bright light decorated the landscape below with an orange tint. I had left our condo and called Blackjack around 5 am; very early I know. Although, I wasn't about to complain about this. The orange-tinted land below was beautiful; trees looked lively and rich, while the grass looked like something you'd find in Valhalla. Unlike the city, which was noisy and super busy, not to mention the toxic gas air; the countryside was a lot better.

"Ah, now this is life," I sighed, breathing in the morning air.

"Yup, and I sure love donuts," Blackjack's cursed voice said once more.

"Arghh! Can you just stop with the donut business Blackjack? I'll get you some donuts when we get to camp alright?"

"No can do boss, you know they only allow us to eat hay and apples."

"Well, there's your answer then," I grunted.

"Really?"

"Yes."

"Alrighty Boss, I'll see you on the flipside," Before I could react, I felt Blackjack's weight disappear and soon enough I was falling down fast.

Focusing on the matter at hand, I thrust my hand towards a small stream and willed the water towards me. The cold liquid substance engulfed my body and created wings as I started to descend slowly until my feet touched the ground. With a snap of my finger, the water returned to the stream and my clothes instantly dried up.

"Alright, now to find another way to get to camp," Sighing, I looked around my surroundings before marching forward into the foliage of the forest.

The morning sun hadn't come up yet, but the birds were out and about; chirping happily. She didn't care about these 'normal' creatures. They were below her, just like how mortals were inferior to monsters and gods alike.

It didn't register right away, but for some reason, she had stumbled upon a small stream. The water wetting her feet as the cold tickled her toes. It felt nice. Sitting down on a nearby boulder, she pondered on what she was going to do now. Her feet were currently in a small pond, as she let the water soothe the aching muscles.

"Man, why do I have such bad luck," She groaned, shaking her head while she rubbed her face in frustration.

"Bad luck indeed," A voice said from somewhere behind her. She didn't have enough time to react before she felt a cold metallic feeling on her shoulder.

"Fuck, I'm lost am I," he sighed. Guess walking around aimlessly around a forest you barely knew was a bad idea. But it was all due to Blackjack's fault of course. Another wolf came into view, a bit smaller than its brethren, but still twice the size of a normal wolf. "Empousai, step away from the demigod, my brother won't repeat this again," It growled.

Kelli's eyes widened in fear as she backed against me, hiding behind my shoulder as I held her hand. "What do you want?" I yelled.

"Demigod, that is an Empousai. A monster that feeds on the blood of men," The taller of the two replied. "I advise you to step away from it."

"What? No! You're mistaking the situation, Kelli is…" I gazed at her silently, watching her trembling figure, "Kelli is different."

"Nonsense, all monsters are the same including her."

"We'll leave," I declared, giving Kelli's hand a small squeeze.

"I can't allow that," The white wolf's booming voice said, as he took a step forward. "As protectors of the forest, we cannot allow a monster to leave unscathed. It is our duty to protect those with a pure heart and end those of a tainted one."

"Run!" I yelled to Kelli as I unleashed Riptide. We weaved through branches and trees as we tried to get as far as we could from the two wolves. Glancing being me, I didn't take long for a flash of white to appear; only getting bigger and bigger with each coming second, only to disappear as another shape took its place.

"Stop this childish act demigod!" The wolf snarled, its strides becoming longer.

"Jonathan," Another voice from my left echoed. I knew at that moment that we weren't getting away. "Now!" A heavyweight collided against me, sending me crashing towards a tree with a sickening crack.

"Percy!" Kelli's distressed voice rang out from somewhere in front of me.

"Shut up Empousa and release whatever spell you cast on this demigod," I clenched my jaw tight and forced my eyes to open. Kelli was on the floor, the huge wolf towering over her as the smaller one eyed me warily a few feet away.

"Get away from her!" I yelled before groaning over as pain filled my body.

"This is not any of your business anymore, young one. Adriqos, take the demigod and bring him to Chiron's camp."

"No!" With a grunt, I clambered up onto my feet and launched myself towards the wolf known as Johnathan. Pain instantly flared before suddenly dissipating in a matter of seconds. "Get away from her right now!" I growled, my face twisting into a scowl.

The wolf backed up, fear coating his eyes before disappearing just like that. "Young godling, you've been hypnotized by this witch."

I took a step forward, my fist tightly clenched as I stared into the wolf, "You're wrong."

"I was hoping it wouldn't come down to this," Before I could question what he meant. My vision blurred as I stumbled around before falling and sinking into the darkness.

"Is he awake?" A warm voice woke me, strangely, it reminded me of Hestia.

Groaning, I went to sit up only to get pushed back down. "Stop," a gruff voice warned as I felt a… paw? On my chest, but with very sharp nails threatening to pierce if I didn't follow.

"Johnathon, that is enough," The gentle voice said once again. My eyes fluttered open to the sight of two wolves, one whom I had just run from, with the other being a stranger.

"Demigod, are you alright?" The female wolf asked softly.

"Huh? Yeah, just tired," I responded as I took in my surroundings. We were in a cave, the only light coming from a large entrance far to my right; with a few coming through small cracks from the ceiling.

"Good, we were worried you might've been too far gone because of that she-monster."

"She has been locked up. Monsters like her are a threat to both mortals and demigods alike."

"I'm sorry, but I guess you leave me no choice," She made her way towards me and beckoned for me to stand up. "Follow me young one, and prove to us you're correct."

Nodding, I followed her silently. "Where is this?"

"This is our den, home of the wolves of Sol."

"Wolves of Sol?" I looked at her curiously. I haven't heard of any other wolves that could talk except for the wolves that followed Lupa. Were they perhaps part of her group? Wait… if they were, Lupa might be here. "Shit," I silently cussed.

"Here we are," the wolf's voice snapped my attention towards her. If she hadn't I probably would've fainted again. Just imagining Lupa's harsh gaze made my heart leap.

"Percy?" A small voice said. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Kelli's figure hunched over, her back against the cold cave walls.

"Kelli! Are you alright?" I asked her, coming up to the cell bars.

"Thank you," she said gratefully. Before she and I stood up and made our way towards the door.
