Chapter 6
Lost In The Echo

No One's POV

It was a quiet, almost eerie feeling to the room as everyone walked into the living room of the Vega's home. The only sound in the room was the sniffles of everyone as they took their seats. Everyone's eyes were glued to the floor except Sam's. She was looking at the framed picture of her and Cat. She held it tightly in her hands, letting stray tears fall onto the glass of the frame.

Jade sat quietly, looking at the floor and holding Tori's hand, slightly shaking her head. She would look up once or twice, only to let her head fall again as her tears trickled down her cheeks. She would squeeze Tori's hand every time she would close her eyes. The scene of Cat being hauled away came streaming back in her mind. Taking a deep breath, she let out a heart wrenching sob that broke everyone's heart to hear.

Andre sat with his face in his hands. His whole body would shake as sobs ripped through his body. He let out a cry that would put any grown man with a heart to his knees.

Robbie was silent. He didn't cry or hang his head. He didn't get angry or even sigh. Robbie just sat by the staircase, totally emotionless. Once or twice, his left eye would twitch, but beside that, he sat with a blank look.

Robin was the only one that was not sitting. She was kneeling next to David, crying into his chest. She stood and paced away, always returning to stand with David, sobbing and quietly saying Cat's name and shaking her head.

Tori didn't cry very much as well. However, she had a look of death plastered on her face. Her hand that was not holding Jade's was in a tight fist and she was beating it against her leg. She would look around at everyone in the room and then slam her fist that much harder down on her leg. Knowing she would have a bruise from this didn't stop her self-abuse. She didn't care about her own physical pain. She was so mad that she was so blinded by her own life that she didn't see that Cat was suffering right in front of them, and no one had seen it.

Trina was the only one that was not in the living room. She had gone up to her room to call Beck. She had a panicked look on her face, but her voice and movements were calm and smooth. As she gave Beck what little information she had, she rubbed one hand against the swelling lump that was her growing child.

Holly sat in the kitchen. She mirrored Tori's deathly look, and she too had a tight fist slamming against her leg. What she saw outside today was not something that just happened. This was something that had been building up, and she never had a clue before today. Why? Holly wanted to know why she never noticed the way Cat was acting, or that she had been slipping away from them. But she knew the answer, like everyone one in this room knew. No one gave Cat a second thought, and now she was in a hospital because of a mental break down.

"Did anyone see anything that would have made you say there was something wrong with her?" David asked as he guided Robin into the kitchen, where she sat down next to Holly. David sat on Holly's other side.

"Are you really asking if we noticed Cat acting weird? I mean, this is Cat, and she is one of the weirdest people I have ever met in my life," Trina said, coming down the stairs holding her phone. Sam and Jade both snapped their heads up to glare at her.

"Trina, he isn't asking if she was acting weird. He was asking if she was acting different," Beck said through the phone in Trina's hand.

"Well in that case I didn't notice anything." Trina sat next to David.

Jade huffed running her hand through her hair. "I would have to say I have seen something but I didn't really pay much attention to it at the time." She took both hands and ran them down her face to clear off the tears. "I was at school we were in Sikowitz classroom. It was just me and Cat we were working on a project together. I was writing a script and she was working on the make-up scheme. I looked over at Cat and she was looking at the chair next to her like someone was talking to her. I didn't think too much about it at the time I just thought she was in deep thought. I should have known that something was wrong when she started giggling to herself. But pregnant Mel Brooks here has a point Cat has always been a little off."

"One night last week I woke up and Cat wasn't in bed so I went to look for her. I found her out on the patio in just her bar and underwear. She was sitting all curled up by the wall next to my bike. I bent down to ask her what she was doing and I could see her eyes were full of fear. She kept pushing at the wall like she was trying to get out of something. Then she would call out for Tori but of course Tori never answered her. I just sat next to her until she woke all the way up and took her back to bed. I didn't think too much of it I just thought she had had a nightmare." Sam ran her hands through her hair. "But now that I think about it there have been times where she would be talking to me but waving her hand like she was waving someone away from her. Or she would look to the side like someone else was talking to her when it was just us in the room." Sam then slammed her fist down hard on the coffee table making everyone jump. "Ugh…why didn't I do something then? Why did I just let it go? What kind of girlfriend am I?"

"Sam sweetie you can't blame yourself we all seen something wrong and didn't think that it was more than Cat just being Cat. I too saw her acting a little strange and yesterday when we were talking outside and I did think that there was something a little different about how she was acting but I dismissed when she rejoined the conversation like nothing was wrong." Holly wiped the tear that slipped away. "I thought about asking Jade if she know of any mental problems that Cat may have but I again thought it would be a talk we can have another day." She shook her head with a disgusted look. "Then when I asked Cat if she wanted to go get ice cream with dad and I and she seemed very happy about that. But when I came back down to get her she was gone and Tori told me she was walking home."

"Yeah I seen her outside as I was walking back from my car. She said she wanted to get back home before it got dark. She didn't look at me once in face. I came in to get Jade and it was when we were coming down to leave when I saw Mom." Tori looked down at the floor then snapped her head up. "You know the whole time Cat and I were arguing I could see that she was having troubles keeping her eyes in one place. She would look all around never on one thing. Cat and I have had our arguments in the past but she was always able to look me right in the eye unless she was feeling guilty about something, but even then she would hold some kind of eye contact." Tori said looking around to the people that knew Cat the best.

"The whole trip to the ice cream shop she was very distant and stand offish. I thought that Mom and I had done something wrong at first something to hurt her feelings. I guess she thought we forgot about her when we had gone off to get ready so she had left. But after picking her up she had become very quiet and detached from everything around her. Then in the parking lot when she yelled at me calling me and Mom by our first names and telling us that she was just wasting our time. I didn't know what to do all I could do is stand there and watch Cat slip farther away from us. I wanted to grab her and hug her but she was so agitated that I was afraid that she may scream and someone would think I was hurting her. I couldn't do anything besides watch as my daughter turned and ran away from us. Then at our apartment I have never in the four years of knowing Cat seen her act like that or talk to anyone the way she did. Hell I didn't know she knew those kinds of words she was saying to you Jade."

"Oh yes at one time or another every one of us have been at the mercy of Cat razor tongue. If you piss her off then you better watch out because that girl can put a sailor on leave to shame. I've seen her cuss out a college football fullback and leave him in tears and after she was done she tossed him a quarter and told him to go cry to his mommy. So yeah she can be a little foul mouthed." Jade, said

"A little? You should have heard what she said to me outside I was totally floored that she would even dream of talking to me that way she did. It wasn't just the way she was acting it was also what she was saying. She was so cruel at first that I didn't know if I wanted to keep talking to her or slap her. She did straighten up after I put her in her place but I have never heard her be so cruel before." Holly said with her eye watering up again.

"I know I stepped over the line but she was also cruel to me and she has never been that cruel before. Sure like Jade said Cat has let us all have it from time to time but she was right down hateful. And this is the girl that told me that if I didn't take Jade and fuck that then I was going to lose it forever so stop whining about it and go hit it." Tori said. Jade let out a small laugh knowing that Cat would say something like that but she also heard what Cat had said to Tori when they were arguing and knew that she was being more than hurtful. Jade jumped when she heard the loud knock at the door.

The door opened Sikowitz and Lane walked in. "I was just to see Cat she was very agitated when I first arrived and as we talked her agitation only escalated. She went from being a little agitated but able to talk to me clearly to pointing to the far corner of the room yelling about her twin being back. She became so stressed and loud that they had to sedate her." Lane told them looking like he had been hit with a ton of bricks. There were gasps when he told them that Cat was sedated. Holly grabbed at her chest and her other hand over her mouth. Sam and Jade both became very angry and they started to pace the floor grumbling under their breath. "I talk to her doctor and he said that Cat will be in a seventy two hour hold which in that time she will be on constant watch. After which she could receive visitors but I say it would be only family and Sam you might get to see her." He told everyone.

"But we are her family." Said Trina

"No dear her blood kin." Lane told her.

"Then she'll get no visitors. Hell they didn't even come see her when she was in the hospital after the accident only her brother did and after this last fall back he had she won't even get him." Jade said punching the wall making Tori jump and closing her eyes.

"I will see if I can explain her family to her doctors and let them know that she is in a same sex relationship and see if I can get you up to see her Sam."

"You have to tell them that we're engaged she's going to be my wife and in California we have the same rights as everyone else. You have to tell them, you just have to. I have to see her." Sam was starting to yell and moving towards Lean like she was going to hit him. Jade grabbed her from the side and pulled her into a hug.

"I will I'll tell them everything. You know even the doctors know that not everything is black and white anymore that we make our families very different now days and it isn't as cut and dry as it was say fifteen years ago. So I'll make them see. Holly maybe there is something you can draw up some kind of legal paper that will stand up in court if it came to that." Lane said.

"I'll start looking tonight to see what I can do, but whatever is drawn up Cat would have to sign and if she isn't in sound mind it won't hold water."

"Wait didn't Cat sign a Power of Attorney after the accident when Jade and I did?" Tori asked.

"Yes I think she did. She appointed Sam as her POA so in this case Sam could sign for her and because Sam is her POA she has the right to see her so she can make the right decisions." Holly said jumping up and running off to her office.

"Well when I get the paperwork then I'll get the ball rolling with the doctors and see about getting you all in to see her." Lane waited for Holly to come back with the file that had the Power of Attorney and Lean left shortly after getting copies of all the files.

"Hey, Jade, what did your father want?" Tori asked her wife.

"Um."
