PART 1

Ever since he suffered a massive stroke four years ago, Former Detective William Murdoch had spent most of his days inside the apartment of the Winston House Hotel. Sometimes, especially now that he recovered significantly, he liked to limp around the corridors leaning on his cane and spent a few hours at the hotel lounge reading magazines, newspapers or talking to people when his caregiver wasn't keeping him busy with his physical therapy. When Julia wasn't working the two would go for walks around the park, going to the theater, romantic dinners and going to visit his colleges at Station House 4. He however never dared to walk the streets alone, in fear of falling and getting hurt again. Still, he enjoyed his favorite pastimes in observing the buildings that were growing and expanding around the hotel and around his precious town.

It had been a lovely day of reading and conversing with other guests in the lobby that William was alone in his apartment. He was dozing off in his favorite armchair waiting for his wife Julia to arrive home from work when something caught his attention from his window. Straightening in his chair to get a better look he realized it was coming from the apartment just across the street. He slowly leaned forward to get a better look and was starting to get worried from the large fight that was happening between a man and woman. The fight was intense with each of the occupants were yelling at each other. Before William could try and decipher what they were fighting the man, red faced, walked up behind the woman and wrapped his hands around her neck.

"No!" William yelled rushing to the window but fell to the floor. He struggled to get back to his feet and watched as the man still sneering with disgust as he dropped the limp body of the woman who's body remained limp and still. William looked completely shocked when the killer turned and glanced out the window as if realizing that it could have been spotted. The seasoned detective looked horrified when the killer locked eyes with him. His mouth grew dry as he fought to close the curtains before William watched the man rush out of the apartment leaving the woman behind. "Help! A murder!" He turned around reaching for his cane when he felt a wave of dizziness and fell back to the ground making his groan in pain when he heard the rattling of his door and started to fear he was in danger himself.

"William!" Julia exclaimed rushing to his side and helping him to his chair. "What happened? Are you alright?"

"Jules...There...been..."

"William breath slow breaths." Julia coached gently rubbing her husband's back. "What has gotten you so scared?"

"Jules...the window." He lifted a shaky arm towards their window. "There's been a murder."

"A murder?" Julia asked wondering if her husband had hit his head when he fell. "Where?"

"Apartment...across street." He said his voice getting hoarse as he forced himself to breath more slowly.

Julia stood up slowly before William reached up to use her to help himself to his feet but was gently helped to his chair by Julia. "Careful, you could get hurt again."

"Julia please...There has been a murder." He said looking across the away at the apartment and saw that the room had the curtains drawn.

"William how can you be sure there was a murder there?" Julia asked closing the blinds as to help her husband but he was leaning on his knees muttering about the murder that he had just witnessed. "William. Tomorrow we'll go speak to Station House 4. Then they will go and see that it was just your imagination from being stuck indoors."

William shook his head before using his cane and headed for their bedroom to lay down. Julia watched as her husband slowly got himself ready for bed and she reluctantly joined him.

That night William woke up in a cold sweat as the images of the woman laying there, the act of pure anger as the man had as he strangled that woman. Thoughts of seeing that woman being his sleeping wife made sleep more difficult. He looked at his chair and slowly moved from the bed and limped to the window and slowly pulled the blinds apart. The apartment was dark and he couldn't see anybody moving. But he knew that the woman was still laying there, forcibly taken from living from that man. He sunk into the cushions and continued to stare at the window and slowly fell asleep.

The next morning Station House 4 was erupted by a scream of panic coming from an older woman. After being told of the address, coincidentally being just across the street of the Murdoch's place of residence, Constable George Crabtree stared at the deceased form of a woman while Detective Watts stared at the examiner who was doing a routine check of the deceased. "Anything of interest, Miss Hart?"

"This woman has been dead for a little over twelve hours." Hart said writing down in her notes. "She appears to be manually strangled which means the act was personal."

"Who reported the body?" Detective Watts asked looking over at George who was looking out the window before looking back at the deceased woman on the ground.

"A Mrs. Harrison, sir." George said pointing to a distraught woman who was sitting down sobbing inside a crumbled handkerchief. "She was an acquaintance of our victim. She phoned the police this morning when she discovered the body this morning."

"Thank you, Constable." Detective Watts replied. He slowly walked to the grieving woman and took a seat across from her. She looked up and dabbed at her eyes before looking into Detective Watts' face. He could see the pain of loss in her eyes as he gently took her hand. "Mrs. Harrison?" He asked gently making the woman nod. "I'm Detective Watts with the Toronto Police. Did you know the victim besides being an acquaintance?"

"I met her at Church barely a month ago," Mrs. Harrison said her tears returning but she quickly wiped them away with her handkerchief. "Her name was Molly Jones. She mentioned she was wanting to live in Toronto and I had this apartment available. She was such a sweet girl and I was coming to collect her monthly rent when I noticed the door was open and..." She didn't have to say anything else as Detective Watts knew she had just discovered the body.

"Mrs. Harrison thank you for your time. I'm so sorry that you had to discover Ms. Jones like this. But we will go and find out who killed her and bring them to justice." Mrs. Harrison nodded before covering her face once again with the handkerchief. Detective Watts moved quickly to Constable Crabtree who had just helped Miss Hart with covering the body. "Constable." George stood at attention when Detective Watts walked up to him. "See if you and the other lads find any possible witnesses. I also want someone to stay here to make sure the crime scene will not be tampered with."

"Yes sir." George said nodding towards his other colleges and headed outside while Det Watts make his way back to the station.

Once at the street, while he was waiting for a cart, Detective Watts spotted the Murdoch's slowly walking around the corner heading to their apartment building. Seeing that his cart still hadn't arrived, Detective Watts looked both ways before crossing the street and stopping the young couple who looked to have been coming from a short walk to the park. The young couple smiled and shook hands with the Detective and looked rather pleased to see him.

"Detective Watts, it's a pleasure." Julia smiled helping her husband towards a small bench as William was looking tired. "Did you come for a visit?"

"Yes, Watts it is a pleasure." William added shaking the fellow officer a shake of his hand.

"It is a great pleasure to see you too, Mr. and Mrs. Murdoch. But unfortunately I'm wishing for better circumstances." Detective Watt gave a solemn smile. "A young woman was murdered last night. But as our motto is we'll find the culprit and put them behind bars."

"Oh my," Julia said covering her mouth in shock. "Just last night William was saying that he'd witnessed a murder." Julia turned to her husband then back to the Detective.

"Is this true, Mr. Murdoch?" Detective Watts asked interested in what he had to say. "Would you like to tell us what happened?"

William froze as he looked at his wife before catching a glimpse of the killer standing against the wall. He watched the killer raise a finger to his lips before turning and walking away but kept looking over his shoulder at William. " nothing." William said quickly knowing that everything he worked for not letting an investigation would jeopardize any hope for justice for the woman he witness getting killed. "I was having vivid nightmare. Even one good as I once was."

"Well, I figured that." Detective Watts said with a disappointed nod. "Well, then I bid you two a fine evening."

William and Julia watched as Detective Watts got into a cart that had arrived allowing them to head inside.

Over a quiet dinner, William managed to convince Julia he did indeed see nothing happening in the apartment. During dinner, someone had called for Julia saying she was needed at work. She left reluctantly but kissed her husband goodbye and saying she was going to send a nurse to help him with bedtime. William wished his wife a good night at work and watched her leave. He glanced down at his dinner only halfway done with his meal when someone took the seat across from him. William looked up and felt cold as he was now face to face with the killer.

"Good evening." The killer said his voice calm as he looked at Julia's own uneaten food. "Do you mind? I haven't had anything to eat all day. This smell great."

"Who are you?" William said keeping himself calm as he watched the killer begin to eat.

"Sorry, where are my manners." The man said cleaning his mouth with a napkin. "My name is Desmond. You must be William Murdoch."

"I must be?" William said not liking his present company.

"I have to say I'm sorry for giving you such a fright last night. I heard it could be hard on such a weak heart." Desmond said his attitude changing to his current position. "I need to tell you the woman I killed, her name was Molly. She was my wife and she got what she deserved."

"But you killed her. She didn't deserve that." William said his voice calm and back to his former Detective attitude.

"She broke a deal. We have ways with deal breakers. So now I have a deal for you, Mr. Murdoch."

"What deal?" William wanting to catch anyone's attention but caught a rather large knife in Desmond's hands.

"You forget you saw anything if you don't want to loose that lovely woman that was with you. I take it she's your wife?" William gripped the top of his cane as Desmond took another bite. "So you promise me you don't mention the fact I murdered my lying wife, and I promise I will leave you be with your gorgeous wife and live in your apartment in peace." William's mouth went dry as Desmond nodded and stood up walking up to William as if he was an old friend but he pressed the knife into William's side. "Take your time, Mr. Murdoch. I'll keep in touch. Take care old friend." He said gently patting William's shoulder and left without another word.
