Chapter 3:Point Blank

Remnant Emerald Forest 2:07

Romeo hated drops where he gets separated because not only is he lost but he has no one to watch his back. Only thing he knew was that he was all alone in some forest in the middle of nowhere with nothing but his armor, rifle and sidearm. Shortly after having gotten out of his pod and attemtping to reach the others to no avail, he looked up and saw a tower with a green beacon at the top.

After looking everywhere else he sighed and thought, 'Seems like the only place too go'.

He walked through the forest thinking to himself about where he was and what he was going to do. 'Damn it this sucks. Walking alone in a forest, no idea where anyone is, and it's in the dead of night as well. Least I have the nightvision function on my helmet, hear not everyone has it yet. Still though, only makes this walking a little better.'

Deciding he'd walked enough for the time being, he stopped and was about to rest for a couple minutes when he saw movement in the corner of his eye. The trooper turned towards where he'd seen the movement and was only barely able to make it out, the reason being his nightvision outlining it in red.

'What is that? Can't be UNSC, it's not green or even yellow. Guess I'll take the shot.' Romeo thought to himself, the whole time he had been moving to pick his rifle back up from where it lay against a tree and had already shouldered it.

Choosing to use the infrared setting rather than the standard one he normally used so he could see it better as he looked at the figure through his scope.

'A Brute? No, it would've sniffed me out a long time ago. Well, it won't be my problem in a sec here. No way I'm missing at this range.' He thought to himself, lining up his reticle with the beast's head, before pulling the trigger. The round hit the Ursa in the skull almost instantaneously dropping it before it could make a sound, though the rifle's crack was still as loud as ever.

Knowing that someone or something woud come to investigate the sound of his rifle firing, Romeo was going to have to move quick. Though that wasn't going to stop him from admiring his handywork quickly.

Walking up to the corpse of the Ursa, he saw that it had a plate that looked to be bone on it's head with red markings on it and some more on it's back. Turning around with several new questions in his head, he took off in a jog towards his current objective, not noticing that the Ursa was evaporating.

Romeo was a little too focused on sprinting, and failed to hear what was coming up from behind them. All he felt was something slam into his back before he was sent flying through the air, his rifle being thrown from his hands. Grunting in both surprise and pain from the hit as he tumbled.

Coming to his feet as fast as he could, he looked up and immediately dived to his right as he saw a black mass come at him. Getting up once again, he looked up at whatever was attacking him. Seeing what it was, his jaw just dropped.

"Is that... Is that a fucking serpent?! What the hell! I've only heard of these damned things, but never that they were on Earth!" The trooper yelled in a mix of anger and surprise, drawing his Magnum and fired some rounds at the King Taijitu only to see them ping off the scales harmlessly.

Dodging one more time as it came at him with it's fangs bared, he stood up and looked around for his rifle, knowing that if his Magnum couldn't kill it then he would need the SRS to do the job, trusting in it as he had so many times before.

He quickly spotted it by a bush, making it out with the yellow outline around it. Though in order to reach it, he'd have to get past the serpent in front of him.

"Oh to hell with it!" He said, sprinting towards his rifle, firing the rest of his mag at the King Taijitu before sliding underneath the jaws of it and then getting back up into a run. Seeing that it was right there within his grasp, he was already reaching out towards it before he felt something hit him.

Hitting the ground harder than before, he groaned while he got to his feet, though slower than he did the first time. Shaking his head once he got to his feet, he looked up at what had hit him, his jaw dropping once more when he noticed the serpent had another head, this one white.

"Oh you've gotta be shitting with me, it has TWO HEADS!?" Romeo said to himself in disbelief, he knew serpents existed but he'd never heard of any with two heads, much less any of them even existing on Earth.

Noticing that his Magnum had also been thrown away, he knew he was screwed unless he could get his hands on his rifle. Readying himself for another sprint, he took off at full speed towards his SRS, narrowly dodging the black head with a roll forward before he found himself narrowly avoiding the jaws of the white head with a last ditch dive.

Realizing he'd made it, he grabbed his rifle and turned round to fire a round off and hit at least one of the heads, though he found himself getting hit again as he squeezed the trigger, the round sailing off into the sky harmlessly.

Slamming up against a tree trunk, he had the air knocked out of him from the blow. Greedily sucking in air, he powered through the pain and raised his rifle and attempted to aim, though he found himself swaying the whole time unable to steady the gun. He was forced to move out of the way to avoid being eaten by one of the heads, his breath still uneven.

Moving behind a tree as soon as he dodged, he quickly caught his breath and then peeked out and came face to face with the white head. It opened it's jaws and was going to bit him, when he fired a shot in a panic, the bullet going through the roof of it's mouth and out through the base of the plating with ease, causing the serpent to rear it's head back in rage. Romeo quickly followed the shot up with one more that came out the center of where the plate was, killing it.

Glad that he managed to kill one head, he turned his attention to the remaining one which was sneaking it's way towards him. Seeing that he had managed to put down the other head, it was cautious and was moving it's head around a lot so as to avoid getting hit and facing a similar fate. Knowing he had one final shot left in the magazine as his HUD told him, he aimed in and calmed himself as he waited for the right opportunity.

Knowing he couldn't hit it then and there, he decided to let it get closer until he was certain he wouldn't miss. Watching the serpent move as he tracked it with his rifle, he calmly waited.

"Just a little more..." said Romeo, watching it close the distance.

"Almost there, c'mon keep comin'." he said, the King Taijitu getting closer as it picked up speed and moved more erratically.

When it got within spitting distance of him, it reared it's head back and opened it's mouth and was about to come down on the trooper, when Romeo saw his chance.

"Got you." he said, pulling the trigger and the round cut through the air and pierced the serpent's skull, before exiting out the other side of it's head, putting the beast down for good.

Letting out a cry of victory, he reloaded his rifle, putting it on his back, and then collected his magnum which he then holstered. Turning around to take in the sight of his kill, he stared in confusion when he saw what was happening.

The serpent was disappearing into a black mist that went skyward, surprising the trooper as he didn't know this would happen. Not only that, but when he followed the mist upwards, he then saw the moon was broken into pieces.

"What the hell? Am I sure I'm on Earth? Last I checked it didn't have any two headed serpents that disappear into a black mist, and the moon sure as hell wasn't broken.

Shaking his head, he turned around with a whole new set of questions bouncing around in his head, and continued his hike towards the tower he saw. Though he got tired soon after, his body aching after being thrown around as much as he was, and decided to rest by a tree.

Putting down his gear and deciding it wouldn't hurt to break out some of his rations since it was already morning, he took off his helmet and reached into his rucksack to grab some.

It was then that Romeo heard voices coming his way. Letting out a frustrated sigh, he closed his rucksack and put it o his back, and put his helmet on again before drawing his Magnum just in case. Carefully making his way towards where he heard the voices, he found a clearing.

Looking into it from the edge of it, he saw five people walking, four of whom he didn't recognize but could tell they were young girls by their voices and physiques. But he did recognize the fifth one, since they were also in ODST armor. They also happened to be the person he got along with the worst.

Buck.
