Chapter 7:Rescue ops

Remnant, Emerald Forest 0600 Hours

"How's it looking down there Dutch" Buck called as they rappelled down the cliff that led down to the Emerald Forest.

"Looks clear Gunny" Dutch responded that everyone finished their descent and left their hooks and wire in as they unlatched from can never be too sure when they might need to make a quick ascent.

"Alright everyone from here on out we're using the comms on a secured channel." Buck ordered, making sure the troopers switched to the channel and checked in.

"Okay here's the deal. Rookie, take the front and do your thing, if someone or something has been through here let us know. Dutch, you're right behind him. I'm in the middle and Romeo is in the rear. For now use SMGs, save the big guns for bigger targets. Right, now that that's clear, let's move out!"

The troopers slowly made their way through the forest watching every angle they watching anywhere from their four to eight o'clock, Buck watching their nine and three, with Dutch covering their ten and Rookie just leading them on looking for a path to follow.

After some trekking in pure silence Romeo spoke up "Hey are we even sure they're still alive? I mean these Grimm are tough to take down alone."

Buck decided to reply rather harshly, "Hey Romeo, we're getting them back. Alive or dead. So shut up and do your job."

"What is it Rook?" Dutch inquired. "You pick up on something?" The lance corporal just nodded.

"Well what is it it? Does it lead to the Captain or Mickey?" Buck asked, Rookie just nodded before pointing to some prints ahead of the troopers, and followed the faint tracks with their eyes to some brush before noticing they disappeared into it.

The Rookie just pointed at the brush before signaling for the squad to move four ODST's made their way though the brush and on the other side saw the footprints again and continued following but the longer they followed the more they imprint of the boot, for it was surely a boot much like those that they wore now, got deeper and more obvious as well as the space between each print lengthened.

The trooper followed now at a faster pace than before and soon found some spent casings that were of the same caliber as their Magnum rounds, something they quickly noticed.

"This is one of ours, but the question is who fired it?" Buck said to himself.

Immediately after Buck did this he got that feeling that something was watching, and was ready to kill. It was the a feeling that he had gained through his many years on the field. Though this time it felt... different somehow.

Buck looked around checking to see if the rest of his squad had noticed it too and sure enough they too were checking their angles. "Hey Sarge the Rookies been signing for a few seconds motions over and over and he's saying there's some enemies nearby!"

Buck was about to turn to them before a Beowolf broke through the trees and towards him. He quickly gunned it down before it could get close but by the time he'd switched off the dead beast, more had started coming.

"Shit! Everyone follow me!" Buck ordered, the troopers all ran and followed him. Of course, the Grimm gave chase as they weren't so eager to lose their prey.

"Dutch get start charging the Laser, we'll cover you." Buck said, watching as Dutch switched to his Spartan Laser and pivoted on the ball of his foot and began charging it up. The others followed suit and began spraying into the Grimm hoping to slow them down long enough for the Laser to fire.

The red laser pierced the Grimm dropping their numbers, but there was no time to celebrate as there were still more coming and the squad once again began their mad dash.

"Gunny we can't keep running their going to catch us eventually." Dutch said.

"I know that, just hold on" Buck replied through gritted teeth.

That was the moment Buck saw a small clearing, and decided that was where they would finish off the rest of the Grimm. "All right we're going to get to that clearing and kill the rest once we get there." Buck said to them, and started thinking of a plan in his head.

Buck didn't even notice he had tripped yet. One second he was running through the forest and the next he was on the ground. He looked behind him and saw that he'd tripped on a root. He then attempted to stand up, only for him to fall over again.

It was then that he felt the pain through the adrenaline, letting out a quick scream before he felt someone grab him by his armpits and started dragging him.

Looking up, he saw Romeo dragging him over to the clearing, saying something that Buck couldn't quite make out. Nonetheless, he pushed through the pain and leveled his assault rifle, which he managed to hold onto even after falling, and started firing at any Grimm that came too close.

Rookie and Dutch had reached the clearing and had been laying down covering fire for their two teammates. Bullets whizzed past Romeo and Buck, coming dangerously close sometimes but they both trusted their teammates and as such Romeo did not falter each time a bullet went by.

Buck had run out of ammo by the time they made it to where Dutch and Rookie were, which was good as he could hear his barrel sizzling from extended fire as well as seeing some smoke rise from it.

By then though, the rest of the Grimm were dead, and were already evaporating as they usually did. When they had finished making sure that it was clear and no more Grimm would show up, Rookie walked over to Buck to check on his foot.

Reaching into his rucksack, he pulled out a small medical scanner and used it to look at Buck's foot. After it determined what had happened, he just put it back in and pulled out a syringe, a bottle, and a mouthpiece to bite on. Removing Buck's helmet, he gave him the mouthpiece which Buck took in and started biting.

Rookie then began filling the syringe with the local anesthetics he'd taken out of his rucksack and removed Buck's shin guards and rolled up his BDU leg before injecting the anesthetics. Buck felt the pain subside as the anesthetics began kicking in, as he watched his teammate put the medicine and syringe away.

Once done, Rookie quickly reached over and started resetting Buck's foot before he'd even realized it.

And suddenly, Buck couldn't have been more thankful for the mouthpiece he was biting on.
