Chapter 7

"Chaos Control!"

Shadow appeared suddenly on the edge of a small body of water. Out in the middle of it was a tall, sloping, all-too-obvious lair. It was early evening. The water shown pink and purple, reflecting the colors off the sky.

He held the emerald at arms' length, considering it. Inside, he decided and vanished again. Reappearing just outside the steel double front doors, he stowed the emerald away in his pants' pocket carefully and prepared to kick down the obstacles in front of him. He had no problem with doing it.

With a loud crashing sound and a gust of wind, the doors collapsed inward with one strike of Shadow's foot. Laser fire immediately ensued, and Shadow ran straight into it, sticking closer to the walls to avoid as much of it as possible. Both robots and humans were behind the attack.

Once he got close enough, he touched the emerald in his pocket and shouted, "Chaos Spear!" A bright green light erupted from his outstretched hand and broke the floor at the attackers' feet. Some of the men fell through the large hole, but others just managed to escape it. Several of them immediately dropped their weapon at seeing the extent of his power.

Humans are so pathetic! Shadow thought, as he sprinted full speed down the hall. The energy from his lost emerald guided him left, then right, then right again, and left, up several hundred stairs. There was little to no resistance the farther he went. He didn't think about it. Kicking down the final door in his way, he was met with a large, spacious room with a massive monitor on the wall across from the entrance. Several tables littered the floor and around the edges were differently shaped cannons and large gadgets of sorts.

A glow radiated from across the room, catching Shadow's eye. He appeared next to it, taking it carefully in his hands, making sure there was no damage. He filled with sudden rage. There was a chip in the emerald's side. Someone had broken his precious emerald! Taking a slow, deep breath, he took out his other emerald and touched both together.

"Chaos Restore!" The chip filled in again, returning to normal, its soft glow getting slightly brighter. Having a connection to the chaos emerald deeper than anyone else could, Shadow recognized that it was "happy" to be put back together again. With that, he smiled a bit, very unusual. He was relieved, but happy? Shrugging it off, his stoic expression returned, and he turned to leave again, meeting the gaze of a shocked but determined man with blue skin, black hair, and a blue lab coat, wielding a laser ray.

"Where do you think you're going?" he asked steadily, taking a step forward. "That's mine, so give it back!"

Shadow simply stared at him for a full 3 seconds, silent, with a slightly annoyed look. He squeezed an emerald, appeared by the kicked-down door, and started to leave indifferently. A hissing sound pursued him, and he glanced back just in time to swiftly shift his head left to avoid a laser shot. He growled in frustration, gripping the emerald again, and appeared in front of the man. The laser ray barrel was smoking from the shot. He snatched the gun from the man's hands and snapped it in two effortlessly. Dropping the pieces, he wound up for a punch but didn't make it anywhere near the man at all, since he had to dodge another laser attack from behind. In his haste, one of the emeralds had dropped to the floor.

Jumping away, he spotted a tall, thin newcomer dressed in a bodysuit of green and black. Her long jet-black hair shone in the light. The black makeup on her eyes and lips hardened her features. Her clenched fists glowed green. He glanced back at the chaos emerald on the floor at the feet of the man who picked it up.

"Chaos Control!" he shouted, catching the two humans off guard. Time immediately slowed. His surroundings lost their color, turning different shades of gray—except the woman's hands. They stayed green. Pure energy, Shadow realized, turning his gaze to her first. This was turning out to be quite a more complicated trip than he'd originally thought.

Holding back was not his specialty, especially after they attacked him first. With unparalleled balance, he forward flipped over the woman's head and planted a hit at the base of her skull, automatically knocking her out. Grabbing the chaos emerald from the man, he kicked him backwards.

"Chaos Control!" The color returned. The woman collapsed forward, the man backward onto his rear.

The man watched him as he started to leave again and ripped out a small remote with a single red button on it. "Think you can just leave that easily?!" He slammed his whole hand on the button. A large steel barricade fell over the entrance, blocking any way of leaving.

Shadow growled again, stuffing one of the emeralds away in his pocket. "Chaos Surge!" A massive amount of energy erupted from his open palm and shot in all directions around himself. The steel door was half-vaporized in a split second. Both humans were blown back several yards, stopping only as they collided with other objects.

One detail he didn't discover until a moment too late: the toll of using chaos energy as a human. Falling to his knees, hands shaking, he made the realization that he didn't have the same stamina as when he was a hedgehog. Humans were slower and didn't have the same energy reserves. Struggling immensely to stand, he swore to finish this and get home if not just to be a hedgehog again.

He failed to notice the woman sneaking up on him and her hand glow green. Before there was any time to react, she slammed her glowing fist between his shoulder blades with as much force as she could muster. It knocked the wind from his lungs, and he collapsed again, dazed. The emerald rolled away from him, stopping just outside his reach.

The woman put her foot on his back to keep him down. "Hey, Dr. D, who is this kid?"

Dr. D stood, leaning against a table to steady himself. "He knows how to use the gem's power and weaponize it," he whispered in awe, walking up the slightly glowing chaos emerald and picking it up.

"Draken!"

"You're ruining my moment, Shego!"

"This kid ain't gonna stay down forever."

Draken thought for a moment, tapping a finger on his lips. Then, he snapped his fingers. "I've got it!" He strolled towards the wall monitor and took up a small black square of electronics. "Once I figure out how to use this precious gem of mine, I can finally take over the world!"

This useless body is total garbage! Shadow thought, far past furious. This idiot thinks he can take over the world? When he felt the device hit his forehead, everything went dark.
