Chapter 11

Wade finally managed to call Kim. Her end rang a few times, but she never picked up.

But, then, several things happened at once before even the twins had anything to say. 1. The line picked up with Rufus chittering madly about Ron and Kim missing. 2. Kim appeared in the room. 3. Shadow also appeared and shoved me against the wall. His eyes were their normal red, but he was much angrier than I've ever seen him.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa! Shadow, what are you doing?!" I asked, putting up my hands in defense. Only Sonic has ever dealt with Shadow when he's this angry. This sort of panic is new to me!

"Give me your chaos emerald, Tails, or I'll take it," he hissed, stomping forward.

"Kim, is that—?" Wade said, spinning toward the commotion. "Miles, what's going on?" The tweebs looked at each other.

"Icka-bicka-boo?" one twin asked the other.

"Hoo-sha!" the other said, nodding.

Both of them jumped forward, toward Shadow's turned back.

"Guys, don't!" I yelled.

"Chaos Control!" Shadow said, lifting the gem.

Uh-oh, I thought, wishing I could react faster. I felt his hand clamp onto my arm as the world turned dark for a second while we teleported. We hit grass on the other end—or, at least, I did.

"Whoa! Did we just teleport?" one of the twins asked excitedly.

"Like in the movies?" the other said, high fiving his brother. "Hoo-sha!"

My tails twisted nervously, aware that Shadow had brought us to Middleton High's football field. Suddenly, I saw bright blue flit down the hallway inside the school. Then, it went back down the same hallway again at the same speed.

Shadow wants the chaos emeralds, I thought, glancing briefly in his direction to my right. He must have taken mine during the teleportation. This is the perfect opportunity to fight Sonic, too. A black square in the center of his forehead caught my attention. It was a piece of technology. A red light flashed once on it. Mind control! The reason Shadow didn't come back was because he'd gotten mind-controlled!

His fingers twitched violently, and his hand glowed red. He pulled his fist back. "Chaos Spear!" Shadow yelled, launching his fist toward the school. Just before the energy made contact with the building, the blue blur stopped at the window to see the commotion.

The ground rocked with the explosion. I stepped back and shielded my face from the wind and debris. Half the first floor must have been taken out. Sonic had vanished in the blast. Shadow had already gone inside.

"Sonic!" I shouted, running straight into the school through the blown wall. I lifted my wrist to look at my watch. There was a dial on the side. I clicked it twice. Up projected a hologram image of the school and 3 glowing red dots. One was moving around the first floor at high speed. The other was stationary to my left and forward. "Sonic!" I shouted, running in the direction of the unmoving dot. My GPS was tracking the contact lens I'd given each of them to see through my invisibility. There was no way Shadow would be standing still.

It was a classroom. Or, what was left of one. Nothing was in one piece. Rubble had fallen from the ceiling. Shreds of paper settled to the floor. The lights flickered and sparked with electricity. Some of the rock shifted in the corner.

"Chaos Control," said a muffled voice. Sonic appeared near the doorway behind me and leaned against it. "That hurt a whole lot worse than it should have. Now, I'm gonna kill him."

"I'm glad you're okay," I said, relief filling me to the surface, walking toward him. "Shadow wants the chaos emeralds."

Another explosion shook the room. The swinging lights threatened to fall.

"Sonic, you've got to stop him! He's being mind-controlled!"

"So, that's what this is about, huh?" he said thoughtfully, before zooming away.

After he disappeared, I glanced around wondering if anyone was still inside the building. I'd have to check just to be sure. Uh-oh, I thought suddenly, realizing I'd left my game controller at Kim's house. I couldn't use my holograms. Unless the twins…

I sprinted back outside, hearing the first clash of battle overhead. The tweebs were nowhere in sight. "Guys!" I called, worried they were too curious for their own good. I didn't have enough time to look for them, though. I didn't trust how long the school would stay in one piece so nicely. There must have been people inside. They had to be found before the place collapsed, which no doubt it would with those two going at it. All I hoped for was that I could get the people out safely.
