Hello, everyone! Welcome to my attempt at writing Kaiba! Enjoy the chapter! *Runs away*

*Yami Bakura peeks his head out, eyes wide*

'The heck? Why are you running?!'

I can't write Kaiba!

'You don't know that!'

*Continues to run away.*

'Sigh, I'll go get her, but first! She doesn't own Yu-Gi-Oh! She only owns the broads Christine and Meg. If you recognize anything, it's not hers either.'

*Chase Scene commences*

The first time Kaiba saw her was when she was introduced to the class. He had just returned from setting up command at Kaiba Land, so he went to class only to say that he did. He was still a student, after all.

Meghan Peters was a... cutesy girl, he would say; not that much different from that girl Miho from years past. After she introduced herself, she beamed at the class - asking that they take care of her - and he noticed the flash of a smirk towards Christine, who immediately froze solid. The blonde's face must have been wide in surprise as the new girl's smile broadened even further.

As soon as the break started, the entire geek squad surrounded the new girl at her desk by the window. She batted them off playfully, like she knew their reactions perfectly. When they asked how she was able to get there, she made an impersonation that sent chills down his spine. It was a perfect imitation of Maximilian Pegasus. Apparently, he had paid for her plane tickets and was paying for her apartment not far from the school. Based on Christine's expression, the girl couldn't have been happier to see this new girl, but, as usual, Kaiba was slow to warm. Who was this girl?

Every time he was at school, he would see Meghan Peters pretty much attached to Christine at the hip. The blonde didn't seem to care; she was reveling in the attention. He even saw the two in passing as they walked through town. Something that caught his eye often, though, were the random flinches when Meghan passed something. Christine would be at her side in an instant, looking around like someone had bumped her friend when no one was even there. The new girl would always wave off the concern, but Kaiba could see, even from his distance, the effect of the disturbance on her.

He hardly cared about the new girl even with the repeated appearances until Christine showed up in his office unannounced. She was still in her school uniform, so she must have come straight from school. Kaiba had skipped that day – frankly, that entire week he skipped – because he didn't feel like going; he had too much work.

"I hope the rest of the geek squad isn't coming." Kaiba deadpanned as he walked into his office, hardly sparing the blonde a glance.

"No, Kaiba, it's just me." Christine replied, an obvious smile in her tone. "Jounouchi wouldn't be caught dead walking into your office building."

That Kaiba could see. "I come for business of my own." Kaiba looked up from the papers he had turned to, seeing Christine leaning ever so slightly onto his desk. "I need to ask a favor, Kaiba." The CEO narrowed his eyes. "At least hear me out?" Kaiba didn't move. "I'll get you a duel with Yugi."

"Fine."

Christine beamed and immediately began talking.

"I'm leaving the country for a few days, and I need someone to keep an eye on Meg."

Kaiba narrowed his eyes again. "It's not like I'm asking you to be a 24/7 bodyguard. All I'm asking for is to check in on her. See if she's eating, doing homework... all that!"

"You want me to be her mother."

"Technically?"

Kaiba kept his eyes narrowed at her. Christine kept her nervous smile for a moment longer before it faded into a sigh. "I'm just worried about her, and I would really appreciate it if someone kept an eye on her." The CEO didn't reply, so Christine simply sighed. "Very well, I'll ask someone else." The girl stood up from her chair and began to walk away. "Thank you for your time, Kaiba." Words were out of his mouth before he could stop them.

"Why come to me first?"

Christine stopped and turned back towards him. He had looked up from his papers, eyes still narrowed. "If there were other people you could ask, why ask me first?" Surprisingly, Christine gave a small laugh.

"I thought Meg would appreciate it."

"Why?"

Christine had to think for a moment. She gathered her words before speaking.

"I guess... She can relate with you."

Kaiba sat up in his chair. Christine correctly took it as the sign to continue. "Meggie's father was a dick; her entire family even; treated her like crap. She could only ever rely on me as her support and seeing you in the same kind of situation and be able to overcome it, well, I guess she thinks you're relatable." Kaiba pushed aside the relatable aspects of her words and stuck with the words that brought back painful memories, memories of Gozaburo Kaiba looming over him.

"Why did they mistreat her?"

That brought the smile back to Christine's face. He immediately regretted asking the question. Without a word, she pulled a small charm from her bag and tossed it over to the CEO, who caught it easily in the hand that wasn't holding his papers.

"Carry this if you walk into town this afternoon."

Kaiba looked it over. It simply looked like a red-backed piece of wood with a bit of gold string as detailing. What was so special about it?

"Why?"

Christine turned back around and sauntered out of the room. Before she did, she turned her head to glance at him.

"You'll see exactly as she does and why her family hated her."

With nothing else, Christine left the room, gently closing the door behind her.

Kaiba didn't think much of the little amulet, tossing it into his briefcase immediately after there was silence. He continued working until he looked at the clock and realized that Mokuba would have returned to their mansion home by now. He quickly made some phone calls before walking out of his office and down to his ride home.

The CEO rode silently in his limo when the amulet appeared in his mind again. He glanced over at his briefcase. See as she sees... Simply to prove to himself that Christine was simply messing with him as usual, Kaiba opened his briefcase, ruffled through the contents until he found the small red amulet. It seemed innocent enough. There was nothing about it that screamed hocus pocus like being around Yugi and the rest of his geek squad.

Kaiba then looked out the window. Nothing looked different; everything was as it should be. Kaiba huffed; she was just playing with him. He looked back towards the driver's seat as he normally would when something struck his peripheral vision. It was right as they stopped at a red light, so Kaiba was forced to see it. He turned his head to see a sight he never thought he would.

Meghan Peters was walking alone down the sidewalk, a pair of large headphones covering her ears. She looked utterly overwhelmed, clutching at the covers so that they stuck tighter on her head with tears beginning to pool at her eyes. Following behind her was a grisly sight. The man was beaten and bloody but still keeping up with the speed walking girl even with the limp in his left leg. Through the window, Kaiba could hear him shouting at her, barking at her to heed him.

What concerned Kaiba was that no one else was paying him any mind. He passed through a woman like he wasn't even there. All he did was continue to pester the new girl, who did all she could to move as quickly as possible away. What also concerned him was that he had seen his obituary in the newspaper two days earlier... He was a businessman, a good one based on the article. Three days ago, he had been killed when a driver lost control and slammed into the café where he and a partner had been eating. They weren't far from the still ruined building.

'See as Meg saw...' She could see dead people? Ghosts?

Kaiba considered telling the driver to step on it - leave the sight behind - but something tore at him. It was an impossible sight, more hocus pocus. And yet... Kaiba looked back to the girl walking down the sidewalk. She was acting like he wasn't there, trying to keep a semblance of calm while her terror was beginning to seep through the cracks.

When the man tried to shove at her, Kaiba opened the door of his limo. The amulet was stuffed in his pocket to avoid it tumbling into the limo.

"Mr. Kaiba!" His driver called, but the CEO ignored him.

Stomping over to the new girl, Kaiba reached out to grab her wrist and yanked her towards the limo. The movement threw her off balance, and she nearly fell to the concrete below.

"Hey!" She shrieked, voice fading slightly when she looked up at him. "Kaiba! What are you...?!"

"We're not finished, ya hear!" The man barked, blotting out her words.

Kaiba ignored the girl, turning back to level the man with a glare.

"Piss off." He growled.

The man, surprisingly, paled. "If I see you again, I'm calling for an exorcism." The man bolted off, fading into the wall of the building next to them. Kaiba huffed before continuing to drag the new girl.

"Kaiba!" Meghan hissed.

She was still crying when he managed to get her to the still open door of the limo. "How did you-?!"

"Get in."

The girl gave him a dirty look. It wasn't all that effective with the tears still pooling at her eyes. Kaiba returned it.

"How did you see him?"

"Get. In."

The girl still didn't move. They were starting to gather an audience, but neither wanted to back down. After nearly a minute, she sighed.

"If I get in, will you tell me?"

Kaiba didn't reply. It made her sigh again. "It's the best I'm gonna get." She climbed into the limo with no further complaints. Kaiba slid in after, closing the door.

"Drive."

The driver did so. It was silent as they drove down the crowded street. Kaiba kept his eyes firmly on the passing sidewalk, almost like he was looking for the dead businessman. There was no sign of him, so Kaiba took it as a victory. He turned his eyes to his guest when she gave a shuddering breath. The new girl had slid to the opposite side of the car, sitting as far away from him as physically possible. She was wiping her eyes on the palm of her hand, but she was relaxed. Her headphones were sitting innocently on her lap, and, even from his distance, Kaiba could hear the music playing. It was loud; she had been trying to drown him out. Her free hand, though, was clenched into the leather of the seat beneath her.

"How did you see him?"

Kaiba didn't reply, and that seemingly made her mad. "I got in without too much complaint. I deserve an answer." He still didn't say anything. "Fine. Do your thing." She snapped her head to look out the opposite window. Her annoyed expression clear in the reflection. "It was 'stine, wasn't it? She gave you an amulet."

"How'd you guess that?"

She shifted her gaze to his reflection in her window.

"You haven't seen them before, probably never have. You completely miss the one at school."

At school? The girl gave a laugh at Kaiba's subtle change in expression. "Oh yeah. There's one there. 1970s? Not sure. She waves her hand in your face for a minute like she expects you to acknowledge her. Does it every day before lunch." The laugh then became a sigh. "It's kinda sad." Meghan leaned her head onto her arm, cushioning it on the window. "Her expression as she leaves. She's so disappointed about something."

She said nothing more on the subject. There was a moment of silence, one that Kaiba was happy to let marinate, but the new girl began to ask more questions. "Why did 'stine give you an amulet? You're not the type of person to have taken it willingly." How would she have known that? Kaiba gave a side glance to her. Her gaze was still out the window but more likely on his reflection. He kept to his silence and saw the girl sigh. "'Stine's leaving for her trip tomorrow morning, so she would have seen you earlier today... 'Stine!" The new girl's hand collided with her forehead. "I'm freaking stupid." She snapped her head towards Kaiba. "She asked you to babysit me, didn't she? Gah!" The new girl smacked the leather seat next to her. "I don't need to be watched! I'm fine!"

"That's debatable."

The new girl's gaze returned to him, an almost annoyed expression on her face.

"Why's that?"

"The businessman."

Her face suddenly bloomed into a blush. She snapped her head away from him and back out the window.

"I'm used to it. He would have gone away eventually. That asshole didn't know when to quit."

Kaiba didn't say anything against it, but he knew better; he would have kept coming back. "Where are we going anyway? My apartment was... back… there."

That was the moment the limo pulled into the Kaiba mansion. The girl's eyes widened, snapping back to the CEO for a second before looking back to the mansion. "Woah..." The limo pulled around to the front door, and Kaiba opened his own door while someone else opened hers.

"Welcome back, Mr. Kaiba." Roland's voice echoed in Kaiba's ears. "Mr. Mokuba returned not long ago, and your request was seen to."

"Good." Kaiba huffed back.

"Request?" Meghan breathed as she was helped out of the limo by one of Kaiba's servers.

Kaiba, of course, didn't reply, only walking up the steps and into the mansion. He didn't care to hear anything more as he stepped into the main hall and towards his office, where he would work for a while longer.

Meanwhile, with Meg, she was being shown to her 'quarters.' She narrowed her eyes at the man's back. What was this guy even talking about?

"Ms. Peters." The man breathed then gestured to the door in front of her. "These will be your quarters."

Without saying anything, Meg opened the door. The room was huge! It was the stereotypical master bedroom setup, her own bathroom and all. All of her belongings had been settled onto the shelves and drawers. Her guitar was fixed against the wall next to a new bean bag chair. Meg blinked wildly at the suddenness. "I hope it meets your standards."

"I..." Meg tried to stammer. "Why...?"

"Mr. Kaiba has seen to your care while Miss Wilson is out of the country."

Meg gave a wild growl. She was going to beat 'Stine when she gets back from India. How could she do this to her? Get her a babysitter to watch over her shoulder while she was away! "Miss Wilson expected you to be angry as she left this amongst your belongings." Meg snatched the letter out of the man's hand and practically ripped it open. It was 'Stine's handwriting on the piece of paper, so she knew it wasn't some farce.

'Dear Meggie,

I know you're going to be super pissed once you read this, but please understand, I don't want to treat you like a child. You are my best friend, and I don't want to lose you again. Ya boy's probably going to go about it in an over the top way, but that's his way. And besides, didn't you tell me that you wanted to hang out with him? I'm helping you out!

See you in a few days,

'Stine'

Meg gave a sigh, lowering the letter down to her leg. Of course 'stine would remember that passing thirsty comment... "Please settle in, Miss. Peters. Dinner won't be ready for a while." Meg nodded, resigned that this was happening.

Once she was alone, Meg walked over and collapsed onto her bed. It was soft, just firm enough that she didn't fall into it. She had just been connived into staying at her favorite character's mansion for a while... She gave another sigh before pulling herself up again.

"Alright... now what?"

Meg decided that she would change and get comfortable. She pulled off the school uniform and slid on something a little more comfortable. How had 'Stine survived in that uniform for all this time? Meg then took a moment to look around her living space. It was even bigger than she thought! The bathroom was just as big as the bedroom with its separate bath and shower and her own vanity. The closet just beside the bathroom door was walk-in, partially empty because of Meg's lack of suitable clothing. Even so, she was utterly flabbergasted.

Knowing she didn't want to sit in her new bedroom all afternoon - and she'd already finished whatever work was needed at school that coming Monday -, she grabbed her laptop with the charger and walked out of the room. She meandered through the halls until she found a simple living space with a chair close to an outlet. Meg settled herself in and played random games with clips on in the background.

It seemed like a normal afternoon, but she felt like she was being watched for some reason. She glanced with her eyes first, looking at each corner she could see. There was no one in the room with her; she was utterly alone. But... Meg finally looked up from her laptop to see Mokuba Kaiba looking down at her, a bright smile on his face.

"Hi!" He chirped.

Meg blinked at him. When did...?

"Oh... Hi."

Mokuba gave another bright smile. "How long have ya been standing there?"

"Only a minute or two, why?"

Maybe it was just Mokuba she was noticing. That settled her slightly; she was probably just jumpy from being chased by that one ghost today. She smiled up at the boy.

"Nothing. Can I help you?"

"What are you doing? I keep hearing clips I don't recognize."

Meg wasn't sure if she should show what she has, but... it's Mokuba. Why should she be concerned about him? Meg turned her laptop slightly so that Mokuba could see the screen.

"Ya wanna watch some?"

She and Mokuba settled onto the floor while Meg played a large array of clips for him. Mokuba laughed loudly at all of the funny 'Calling 'Stine' clips that Meg created for moments in their videos; her favorite had to have been the one where she used the Batman symbol and 'called' her. Meg also explained the idea of giving her friend 'tribute' that was the butt of so many jokes. If Meg ever needed help in a game or anything else, she had to make 'tribute' for Christine, usually consisting of baked goods. Meg promised to make some for Mokuba one of the days she was there.

Kaiba was back at work in his office when a new device was hooked into his main system. Had Mokuba brought something home? Still jumpy from Zigfried's virus, he checked what it was. It wasn't a virus, thank goodness, it was a new laptop that was just using his network to connect to the internet. He had turned his head back to his work when something else caught his eye. Since it was on his network, the computer contents were open to his personal one to look at – without the other person knowing. A folder labeled 'Geek Squad' was at the top. Kaiba wasn't a snoop by any means, but… Geek Squad? The term reminded him of his use of the words to describe Yugi and his gaggle of friends. Suitably curious, he put down his work and clicked it open.

Inside were a bunch of other folders with names he didn't really understand. 'Millennium Duels'? 'Duelist of the Roses'? 'Legacy of the Duelist?' What was all this about? He clicked one at random, moved to the middle of the video to avoid annoying small talk, and narrowed his eyes. At the corner of the screen was Meghan – he recognized her from the ribbon tied around her neck –, a controller in her hands and eyes narrowed at her own screen. On the screen itself was a board that reminded him of a Duel Monster's board. Meghan had one monster on the field, one he recognized as Marshmallon, a card used to protect their life points. Her other monster was being sent back to her hand, a Spirit monster he recognized from the text that appeared on the side of the screen. A few quick glances showed that she was doing well against her opponent, despite only having one monster on the field.

"Ok!" Meghan's voice appeared through his speakers. "I think I got him this time! I'm taking a page out of 'Stine's book by using Marshmallon here, but it seems to be working! Hit me, Rich Boy, I dare you!"

Rich boy… that was what Jounouchi called him… The next sentence made him even more confused. "You may be my favorite character, but I am ready to kick your ass!" Favorite character? Kaiba took a closer look, and his eyes narrowed even further.

Meghan's opponent was named Seto Kaiba.

He looked at the monsters opposing her own. On the other side of the field was X Head Cannon and a Blue Eyes! It was his monsters! The A.I playing his cards then played Burst Stream of Destruction, destroying her Marshmallon. "Dang it! Ok, I can… What?" The A.I had special summoned Z Metal Tank and was now sacrificing all three of the monsters. "What is… Oh no…" The image on the card was unmistakable.

It had summoned Obelisk the Tormentor.

The God attacked, eliminating the rest of Meghan's life points while she stared at the screen. It was a long minute after the 'You Lost' text appeared before she spoke again. "Seriously?" She gave a loud sigh before turning slightly. "'Stine?" The screen shifted into an error for a moment before the image reappeared. Holding the control now was Christine, eating a brownie while milling through her cards, a collection of fairy monsters.

"Did I forget to warn you that he could summon Obelisk?" The blonde asked after she swallowed her bite.

"I believe you did."

"Whoops, sorry."

He stared at the screen, surprised at the utterly ruthless strategy Christine used to decimate his deck while growing her life points to an insane amount. Meghan complained at her treatment of Blue Eyes, but Christine simply smiled. It was only a few turns before the blonde had won, and she handed back the controller.

"You're ruthless."

"You have to be when Kaiba's ready to re-summon Blue Eyes at every turn."

Kaiba stopped this video and moved to one from another folder. Sure enough, more of those he knew started to show up. He couldn't wrap his head around it, so he stopped the videos and leaned back in his chair. He pinched his nose. This was just some hocus pocus, he told himself. He was asleep. And yet…

He opened his eyes again to look at the last folder. It had been labeled 'For Posterity.' The CEO stared at it for a moment before sitting back up and clicking it open. Inside was only two pictures. He opened the first one. It was a screenshot of a set of emails sent from… Christine? The subject line read 'Payment,' and there was a file on it but it wasn't open.

'As payment for letting us stay.' The first email read. 'Please enjoy.'

What had Christine sent her? His eyes moved to the second email. There were no words at its beginning; it only looked like Meghan had slammed her head into her keyboard and left it there. Below the amalgamation of letters was a set of words.

'Thank you for your payment. Hotel Meg is happily awaiting your next visit. XD.'

There was nothing else below that, so he closed the image and moved to the second one. He recognized the person immediately. It was himself. He recognized the background as the ballroom from his tournament at Kaiba Land the night it began. …It was the picture Christine had taken of him. What had she said? She was sending it to a friend who was a fan of him and what he did… Kaiba's eyes moved to his door.

What kind of hocus pocus was going on here?

The evening was uneventful. Mokuba and Meg had dinner together with Kaiba not making an appearance. Mokuba was used to the silence, but he was happy Meg was around to keep him company. It was saddening to Meg that Kaiba left him alone. Mokuba had nothing bad to say about his brother, so Meg didn't bring up her own emotions.

When she was headed to bed, she had an unexpected guest. She was brushing her hair in her given bathroom after showering when Kaiba burst down the door.

"What are those videos on your laptop?" He huffed.

Meg wasn't surprised that this conversation was happening; she expected the CEO to find out what other clips she had hidden on her laptop: the videos of she and Christine playing the different array of Yugioh brand games. It was faster than she expected, though.

"Hacked my laptop, huh?" Meg asked.

"You hooked it up to my network, now what's up with those videos?"

Meg lifted her eyes so that she locked them with Kaiba's reflection across the room.

"You watched them; you tell me. I think 'Stine and I explained what games those are quite clearly."

Kaiba bristled at her words. Meg settled down her brush and turned around so she could face the CEO. His fists were clenched tightly, eyes right on her. "It's hocus pocus bullshit, I know. You could just disregard everything you just watched, but that would bother you." Kaiba bristled again as Meg walked calmly over to where he was standing, then passed him to enter the bedroom. She had just settled onto her bed when Kaiba spoke again.

"How did you do it? How were you able to accomplish all of that?"

Meg looked up at him again and decided to be blunt.

"Simple. You, Mokuba, even Yugi, in that world were creations of some dude's head. He created this story. People then ran with it and created games with all of the characters; some of them fan favorites while others are ones people despise with a burning passion."

Meg gave a soft growl of 'Dartz' but said nothing else on the subject. Meg smiled up at Kaiba again. "Any other questions?" Kaiba still didn't say anything but Meg imagined he asked a question. "Yes, the geek squad knows this too." Kaiba raised an eyebrow. "Yeah, I call them that. 'Stine knows and laughs at it." Meg was still smiling. "Any other questions?" Kaiba still said nothing, so Meg's smile grew slightly. "If that's all, I'd like to go to bed." She turned to hop into her bed, but Kaiba still didn't move. She was climbing into her sheets when Kaiba spoke again.

"That ribbon..."

Meg's hand reached up to her still covered scar. Her teasing mood vanished in an instant, leaving behind an annoyed expression.

"I sleep with it on. Got a problem with it?"

"It covers something."

Meg's fingers clenched into the taut skin of her neck. She could faintly feel the lift of her scar.

"Yeah? Well, it's my secret. I'm not willing to share."

Kaiba stared at her with his piercing blue eyes, but Meg stared back just as hard. He didn't bring it up, only turning on his heel and walking out of the room.

The moment he was gone, Meg felt slightly guilty for snapping. She shook off the emotion. She was allowed her secrets; he kept his fair share of them. With that thought firmly in place, Meg slid into her temporary bed, turning off the light. Sleep was slow in coming, though, as she was back to feeling like she was being watched. She knew she was alone, though, so why… Meg forced the discomfort away, shutting her eyes and letting herself fall asleep.

When she woke up that next morning, a Sunday, she was still feeling guilty. "I'm allowed my secrets!" Even so, the guilt gnawed at her. What was she to do anyway? Kaiba was the CEO of a billion-dollar company! He had servants to handle his every need! She looked at her clock, seeing it read 7:45 in the morning. It was Sunday, she should sleep some more, and yet…

Meg gave a growl at her traitorous brain but did get up. She quickly got dressed and walked out of her given room and towards the kitchen. It took a bit of convincing, but she got the servants to give her free reign of the kitchen for breakfast. They helped her find her way around the foreign kitchen, but they stayed out of her way like she asked. Mokuba got the first helping of eggs and French toast, to which he gave wide eyes, gobbling it up quickly. She set aside the second portion for herself then gathered up the third portion on to a small serving platter.

"Where are you going with that?" Mokuba asked.

"I…"

Meg decided to tell the truth. "I said some things to your brother that I'm not proud of, so I'm going to bring him this and apologize." Mokuba nodded, taking another bite of his food. "Any advice?" Mokuba thought about it then replied.

"Don't die."

"Thanks."

With that, she turned on her heel and walked towards the area where the servants said Kaiba worked. Working even on a Sunday? Kaiba really did have no life. When she arrived, she saw that the door was closed; the servants said that was usual as he didn't like to be disturbed by people walking by. Wanting to be polite, she knocked on the door to announce her presence.

"Go away." Kaiba huffed through the wood.

Meg gave a huff. How rude.

"I respected your privacy by knocking but am now going to assert my authority as Meg Peters by coming in anyway."

She hipped the door open and skipped on inside. "Good morning, Kaiba." She was answered with a dirty look. "Keep that face up, and you'll be stuck with it." The expression did shift but not by much.

"What are you doing?"

She set the plate down on an uncovered portion of his desk, not wanting to damage any of his paperwork. She then straightened up, her smile fading.

"Apologizing."

Kaiba's expression shifted again. "I said some rather rude things to you last night, so, to clear my conscious, I decided to make you breakfast." She gestured to the plate. "You don't have to accept it, but here it is." Kaiba stared at her for another long moment, but the suspicion did fade slightly. "I will get out of your way now, Kaiba. Have a good day." She gave a tiny bow before turning and walking out the door, closing it behind her. The moment it was closed, she gave a sigh of relief. Thank goodness that was over with.

Now what was she to do with her day?
