Welcome to the second chapter of my attempt at writing Kaiba! Enjoy the chapter! *Runs away again*
*Just after Robyn disappears, Yami Bakura falls down with a giant net.*
'Dang it! Almost had her!
*Looks to the audience*
'I'll get her! But I have to do this first! She doesn't own Yu-Gi-Oh! She only owns Christine and Meg. If you recognize anything, she doesn't own that either! There is some silly thing called a Trigger Warning for violence or something in here so be ready for that!'
*He picks up his net and races off*
'Get back here!'
With the Geek Squad not coming back for at least a week, Kaiba was left with the…. Dare he say… entertaining company of Meghan. He did end up eating the food she brought; he hadn't eaten at all that day since he was busy planning the next Kaiba Land opening. When he needed to look at something other than his computer screen at 3 in the afternoon, he got up to pace along the halls of his mansion. He eventually came across Meghan and Mokuba sitting in the living room, playing a game. It was something new, so he stood at the entrance and watched. Each time Mokuba's character died, Meghan gave him advice on how to go about it – being surprisingly vague so that he could figure it out on his own – until he was eventually victorious. For hours, she led him through this decrepit city, telling him about the story of some 'Old Blood' and how the monsters it created destroyed the city.
He never did get back to work that day.
The next day, he attended school to get homework and other materials and, mostly, to say that he did. All in all, it was a boring lecture, but he was shocked into clarity when a hand suddenly waved in his face. He had forgotten he had stashed the amulet into his uniform pocket on a whim that morning. He must have been quietly hoping that the sight that Saturday had given him had just been his imagination, more hocus pocus. He heard the soft laugh from Meghan's seat at the window, and, after a quick glance, he saw that she was looking back at him, eyebrow lifted. He then glanced beside him, seeing the 70s style uniform but was too low to see her face, but he made no motion that he saw the hand. She waved for a second longer before she gave up, breathing a soft sigh, and vanished.
When the bell rang for lunch, he got up to go to his usual spot, dragging Meghan with him. She argued, of course, but stopped when Kaiba didn't give up. He normally ate underneath a tree at the edge of the small courtyard the school had, where he had the space to work while he ate.
"You don't have to drag me, Kaiba!" Meghan argued. "I'm coming!"
He continued to drag her, quietly enjoying her mutterings of annoyance and asking herself why he was her favorite character. When he did let her go, she huffed, puffed, then stomped over to sit on the other side of the tree to eat her lunch in 'peace.' Kaiba didn't mind; it was what he would have gone for anyway.
Lunch was a quiet affair as he typed on his laptop and ate mindlessly out of his premade bento. It tasted differently that day, but he didn't complain; it was food. Based on the sounds from the other side of the tree, Meghan was doing the same. There was a small smacking noise before she began to speak. "Soo…. What's the big idea with dragging me over here? I was quite content to sit and eat in the classroom." Kaiba humored a response.
"Call it a whim."
The silence gave the CEO the impression that Meghan was tilting around the tree to give him a raised eyebrow. He didn't glance around as he was still typing at his laptop.
"You are the weirdest person I've ever met."
"And yet I'm your favorite character."
There was sputtering, choking, and coughing for a moment before Meghan could snap back in a hiss.
"Will you not say that out loud?! Especially here! Geez, Kaiba!"
There was another moment of coughing before Meghan gathered herself. There was the sound of her drinking some of her water, a gasp for air as she finished, then went back to eating.
There was another minute of silence before Kaiba's thoughts moved to the hand in his face. Meghan had mentioned that it happened every day at that time. That means she'd seen her every single day since she'd arrived at school. There was also the businessman. Based on her reaction when she got into his limo, she was used to being hounded by them; Kaiba refused to say spirits. It was Hocus Pocus. And yet…
"Meghan..."
"Don't call me Meghan."
Kaiba continued despite the interruption.
"Why do you see those things?"
Meghan was quiet, the sound of her tapping her chopsticks against her bento box – a gift from Christine if he heard Mokuba correctly – hit his ears. She was obviously contemplating how to respond. "Christine mentioned you are isolated because of… whatever it is." Meghan still didn't reply; there was only shaky breath after shaky breath. Kaiba didn't take back his question; Meghan was more than allowed to disregard him.
"It's… It's not something easy for me to talk about."
Kaiba paused his typing, now moving his eyes to glance slightly around the tree. "I can be blunt about it when around 'Stine, but… I'm a coward when I'm by myself. You saw that on Saturday." He had. The tears and the way she had been holding onto her headphones had been evidence enough, but… He looked back to his computer.
"I did, but you kept moving; you didn't let him loom over you."
He heard Meghan shift slightly to turn to him. He didn't look up from his document, but he could feel her eyes on him. She moved back, but her shaky breaths had stopped. She understood what he was bluntly saying. "So?" There was a sound of air, and Meghan began to talk.
"Do you believe in reincarnation, Kaiba?"
"Hocus Pocus."
Meghan gave a small laugh.
"Figured you'd say that. Where 'Stine and I come from, it's only a theory, and it's only ever brought up when it's something bad."
"And where are you two from?"
"New Haven, Connecticut."
Kaiba looked up from his laptop. If anyone could have seen his face, they would have thought he had seen something terrible.
"Oh god… You're American."
Meghan burst into laughter. It was the kind of laugh of reminded him of Christine's cackling that he heard from across the room some days.
"Is that so terrible, Kaiba?"
"Yes."
Meghan only continued to laugh. "No wonder you two are so weird and easily accepted by the Geek Squad." She laughed for another few moments before she forced herself to sober.
"I'll take all of that as a compliment."
She had to cough to catch her breath, but she eventually got back to her story. "Where was I again? Oh, yeah. The question of reincarnation always has a second question attached to it: are their powers in the realm of 'uncontrollable?' Such as remembering things, breaking things… or seeing things." Kaiba looked up from his computer. "You already know 'Stine can do the fun stuff with ice, so we'll use her as an example. She 'came' – and I say that with excessive air quotes because of reasons you will never believe and don't even try to fight me on it – from a family that had ice powers already in its family tree. It's not uncommon for someone to get the same powers in family lines. Those in charge were able to see that she had extreme control over what she could do and, thus, was allowed full access. Me?" Meghan gave a soft sigh. "When I was five, I saw my recently deceased grandmother trying to cook in the kitchen and couldn't get the oven on. I went to my mom to ask her for help, and the look she gave me… I'll never forget it."
Kaiba heard some adjustment, but Meghan kept talking. "I saw them in stores, at the park, walking down the street while in school; New Haven's full of them, and I blame the Witch hunts in the region." There was a breath. "I was branded a freak, a danger to the community my family was part of, and so, wasn't allowed in. I was told I had been a person that had done something terrible, and thus, I was being punished with everything I was seeing. They can't touch me or control me in any way, only see them. The only reason I know goings-on is because 'Stine hated those rules and dragged me in anyway."
"Sounds like her."
Meghan gave another soft laugh before it faded into a sigh. He figured she wasn't going to keep talking unless he made her, so he asked another question. "Do you believe all that reincarnation nonsense?"
"I didn't at first, but… Hey, Kaiba?"
He didn't make a noise to show he was listening, but Meghan must have known he was. "Do you remember Battle City? The vision you saw when dueling Ishizu and then the other one when dueling Yugi?" Kaiba actually looked up this time. How did she… Right, she knew things just as Christine did.
"What about it?"
"There was someone that looked like you, right?"
Kaiba didn't reply, but Meghan knew what he would have said. "I know – hocus pocus – but… I saw something very similar with 'Stine when she stayed with me before your tournament." He kept quiet. "She looked like me but was from a long time ago." Meghan made another noise, this time sounding like she was blowing a hair out of her face. "It was weird, and… I'm not sure what to make of it. 'Stine was so sure that we could learn why I'm like this through learning about her, but…" She sighed again. "I'm not as confident as she is."
"Then don't worry about it."
Meghan was silent at that. "If you don't think anything will come of it, then ignore it." She continued to be quiet, not responding to his statement, but Kaiba didn't care. He went back to his work.
When classes ended that day, Meghan didn't need to be dragged to the limo and back to the mansion. He wouldn't have commented, but the look on her face showed she wasn't going to respond to anything he said. She kept her eyes out the window, watching the city scroll by. Kaiba flicked his eyes around. There was no sign of the businessman from that Saturday, so he let his pride grow at that. He went immediately to his office to work for a while before actually becoming antsy for some reason. He forced himself to work for a bit longer before giving a growl and moving to begin pacing.
He eventually made his way to the kitchen, thinking he could use something to eat to distract himself. The scent of something baking hit his nose before anything else. Mokuba's voice then reached him, his tone telling him he had his eyebrow raised.
"Ok then." His brother drawled. "If you're actually American, hit me with something American."
"Something American?" Meghan drawled in reply. "Really? Something that broad? Are you sure, Mokuba?"
"Hit me."
Kaiba hung at the arched entrance, seeing the kitchen staff lingering at the other one, trying to hold onto laughter at the sight in the kitchen. Meghan had gotten out of her school uniform, pulled her hair back, and was playfully clearing her throat. She then tapped a button on her laptop to start some wild music. It was a song that he'd heard on television while in America, some sort of comedy show for children. Meghan had sung the entire song with such a straight face that even he was impressed. She gave a playful bow while Mokuba seemed lost for words. "Regretting you asked?"
"Very much so."
Meghan laughed wildly at the response. She then reached for the oven mitts and pulled them on. "Brownie time!"
"Not yet! They have to cool! Do you wanna burn your throat?"
"To get homemade brownies all the faster? Yes."
Meghan shook her head fondly before reaching into the oven to pull out the baking pan. "Oooooh." She finagled slightly to point a finger at him.
"Let them cool. They'll be just as good at a lower temperature."
Just as she was settling the pan down, she fumbled wildly. The pan nearly dropped to the floor from the force of her flinch.
"Meg?"
Mokuba jumped to help settle the pan while Kaiba's eyes flicked around the kitchen. What had happened? "Are you ok? What made you jump?" Meghan looked… frightened. Her eyes were wide as they flicked from one shoulder to the other. When nothing else happened, she forced an obviously fake smile.
"I – I'm ok, Mokuba. Sorry for the scare."
Kaiba could see that Mokuba didn't believe her, but he couldn't call her out as he didn't know the full extent of Meghan's strangeness. He only helped her get the pan settled onto the counter and some sort of pricking object to make sure the brownies were fully cooked. The entire time, Meghan looked like she'd seen something. Kaiba had left the amulet in his office, so he couldn't see.
She was still frazzled hours later, so he decided to appear at her room again. This time though, he knocked before entering. "Come in." Meghan was pacing in the doorway between her bathroom and the main room. She only stopped when he blocked her path. "Can I help you, Kaiba?" Deciding to be kind, he 'gently' dragged her to sit down in a chair. She didn't argue with him as she sat down in a chair, eyes locked on her knees.
"What happened there?" He asked.
Her silence only lasted for a few seconds before she lifted a hand to her shoulder and clutched it tightly.
"Something bumped me."
Bumped her? But… He didn't have the amulet on him… Had there been something there?
"What was there?"
"I don't know! There was a push and – and…"
Meghan gave a shuddering breath. Her grip tightened on her shoulder. "I… I think I'm still a bit jumpy from Saturday." Kaiba knew she was lying based on the forced smile on her face. "I'm fine, Kaiba." He raised his eyebrow. "Really." She gave a very Yugi like thumbs up, keeping the forced smile on her face. He considered forcing her to talk, but there wasn't anything he could say without her worming her way out of it. When he couldn't find anything to retort with, he simply straightened up and went to leave. "Kaiba?" He stopped and glanced back. "Thank you for worrying about me." The faked smile turned brighter as she spoke, revealing a more truthful one now. He gave a small noise and turned back but, based on Meghan's lack of retort, she understood what he didn't have the words to say.
For the next three days, the strange instances only increased. Meghan was getting up earlier and earlier, almost hiding in the kitchen and mingling with the staff. The staff was beginning to get worried when she jumped at the simplest of noises. When she wasn't there, she stuck with Mokuba as he asked her questions and enjoyed her company; it was like she didn't want to be left alone. At school, Meghan flinched at every sound that came from someone dropping something in the middle of class or that came from the hallway. The ghost's daily arrival at his desk made her lift her hands and cradle her head; she was trying to block out noises, but why? The one at his desk barely made a sound. No matter what Kaiba did to try and make her talk, she wormed her way out each time and escaped.
When he cornered her in the parlor where she spent most of her free time, once again trying to get an answer out of her, the silk choker she wore popped off her throat and fell to the ground. Meghan fumbled to try and catch it and get it back on, but Kaiba saw what she was hiding underneath it.
A thick scar stretched across her throat like someone had run a knife along her skin. If anyone else had gotten a wound like that, they would have been dead. He could only see it for half a second before she dashed away, hand covering the scar.
"Hey!"
She only continued to run. The sound of a door slamming revealed that she had hidden away yet again. The CEO sighed but didn't follow after her; this was beginning to get annoying. He turned to head back to his office to work for a while. Quickly reading his expression, Mokuba saw that something had happened and apparently took it upon himself to get some sort of closure for the incident. He dashed down the hall towards Meghan's given room.
*Trigger Warning*
Kaiba had been in his office working on the new Kaiba Land location for about an hour before Mokuba's voice appeared from his phone.
"Seto!" His brother screamed. "Help!"
Kaiba was on his feet in an instant, running to where Mokuba was leading him. His hand, almost on instinct, had grabbed the amulet, stuffing it into his pocket. His younger brother was pulling at Meghan's door. "I got her to open the door, but it slammed in her face!" There was a loud bang from the other side of the door. Meghan's voice was a high-pitched scream; her words were muffled by the door, so there wasn't much way to hear what she was saying. "Meg!" There was a crash from inside the room, and Kaiba jumped into action. Moving Mokuba aside, he rammed the door with his shoulder, and it popped open.
The given room was a disaster. The dresser had been knocked over, the clothes spilling out of it. The sheets had been ripped up like a set of claws had slid across them. Her guitar was broken into pieces. Glass light fixtures had exploded, leaving shards of glass on the carpeted floor. "Meg!" Meghan was on the ground in her bathroom; a heavy object was just out of arms reach like she had been using it as a weapon. Leaning over her was a grisly sight. The simple word for it would be a zombie, like in those horror movies, but there was something different – something smarter – about this thing. The clothes it was wearing were dirty and ripped, and, even from his distance, he could see the skeletal face it had and the strange angry light it had in its hollowed eyes. The gnarled hands were wrapped around Meghan's throat, choking her. "Meg! What's going on!" Mokuba couldn't see it… But… they couldn't touch her based on what she'd told him; how could this one?
There was no time to think about that as Meghan was beginning to turn blue from lack of air. Kaiba dashed in and pushed the zombie aside, actually touching the dirty cloth. The creature screeched as it was pushed, but it didn't try to go after him, only glaring at him before vanishing into the shadow of the bathroom lights. "Seto!" Kaiba turned and moved to his brother. Meghan had fainted from lack of oxygen, but she wasn't blue any longer. Mokuba was staring at Meghan's neck; the choker had apparently been ripped off in the attack. The scar looked even larger now that it was slowly turning black and blue from finger-shaped bruises.
"Meghan."
No response. "Meghan!" Still nothing. Kaiba pressed the call button on his phone. "Roland! I need an ambulance! Now!"
The next two days were… exciting, to say the least. Meghan hadn't regained consciousness yet, and the doctors were worried she'd sustained brain damage from her 'fits.' Kaiba didn't tell them about the thing he'd seen strangling her nor that it kept coming back when he left the room to speak with Mokuba or his employees. It made the bruises at her throat very suspect. Thankfully, the head doctor on the team was his own, so they didn't go to the police for a battery charge.
This was a lot more than he'd signed up for.
On the third day, Roland told him that the Geek Squad had returned and were headed to the Game Shop. Mokuba offered to get them to the hospital, and Kaiba agreed. It didn't take as long as he'd thought as he soon heard Christine's voice at the unit's desk.
"I'm looking for Meghan Peters?" She asked the receptionist.
"I'm sorry, ma'am." The receptionist replied without even looking away from her computer. "Ms. Peters is not allowed guests at the moment."
"But-!"
"Dweebs." Kaiba called before Christine could finish.
The blonde looked up, saw him, and immediately dashed over to him.
"What's going on here, Kaiba? What happened to Meg?"
He didn't answer, only turned to head back down the hall; Christine and the rest of the geek squad following after him. "Kaiba…"
"Mr. Kaiba." Roland called, taking the CEO's attention.
The man had approached from the opposite hall. "The image you requested." Kaiba took the envelope that it came in. Christine's temper was bound to be overflowing now as the hall began to feel extra chilly despite the heaters.
"Kai-!" Christine nearly exploded, but he flipped the image toward her, stopping her words right in their tracks.
"This." Kaiba huffed. "This is what happened."
The blonde took the image, the rest of the gang moving to look over her shoulder at it. He had gotten an artist to sketch the creature just for this moment. "Got any idea what this is?" Christine looked at it for a moment longer before she shook her head.
"No. I don't."
She looked up at him. "Were you… were you holding the amulet at the time?" He nodded, and she looked back to the image. "But… Mokuba said she was being choked by something… They can't touch her…"
"This one was."
That sent Christine into silence. If even she was clueless, then who knew anything. Jounouchi, from the back of the group, then barked.
"Rich boy!" He snapped. "You aren't trying to pull a fast one on us, right?!"
"Jounouchi, stop!" Yugi jumped in before Kaiba could huff a reply. "Kaiba's not that kind of person."
Jounouchi looked ready to pull out fisticuffs, but he stopped short since Yugi was holding his leash. The blond was simply left huffing under his breath. What really stopped any argument was the sound of shouts coming from Meghan's room. The image and Jounouchi's accusation were quickly forgotten.
"Meggie?" Christine nearly whimpered, and she dashed towards the room.
The rest of the geek squad followed after her. Kaiba only followed along since he was holding her amulet still.
The creature had come back for another crack at her. The doctors crowded Meghan's bed, trying to stabilize her – thinking it was some sort of seizure or stroke – but that wasn't the case at all. The hospital lights made the creature all too visible, and Kaiba didn't like it at all. The geek squad looked horrified at the sight of Meghan gasping and fighting for air, Christine most of all as her face had turned deathly pale. As quickly and as quietly as he could, Kaiba stepped over and bashed the creature in the shoulder, causing it to fall over like the last time. The moment it vanished, Meghan's fit stopped. He felt Christine's wide eyes on him. "Even now?" He didn't need to reply for her to understand.
The blonde refused to leave her side after that. Some of the others had to leave, but she and Yugi remained. She clutched onto Meghan's hand, quietly begging for her to wake up. The creature didn't come back with her, Yugi and Kaiba staying in the room. The only thing that made Kaiba jump was the sudden switch between the two Yugis. He'd seen enough of Meghan's videos to see the difference between them, but it was still jarring. He was quietly telling her that Meghan would be ok, but Christine wasn't responding.
The CEO watched as Yugi… no, the other Yugi… gently took Christine out of the hospital room nearly two hours after he showed up, saying that they should get something to eat. Christine didn't argue with him, limply following along. The ordinarily perky girl was half dead based on the lack of light in her eyes. When it was quiet, Kaiba looked back to Meghan.
The doctors strapped all sorts of devices to her throat and chest in an attempt to stop another attack, but he knew that they wouldn't work if the spirit decided to have another crack at the girl. Her breathing was slightly labored, her chest lifting in soft breaths. The large scar on her throat looked even larger now, especially with the addition of the black and blue bruises that showed the ghost's repeated choking attempts.
"Idiot." Kaiba huffed at the unconscious girl. "Letting something like this get to you."
Meg had been running for who knew how long. The gargles of the skeletal thing that had jumped her were starting to catch up with her.
Her feet tangled on something, and she fell to the ground. She gave a grunt of pain, but when she tried to climb back to her feet, the skeletal thing climbed onto her back. A breathless scream escaped her before she was pushed to her back and hands wrapped back around her throat. Meg was forced to look back into the mummy-like face of the spirit that had been following her. The eyes had long sunk into its face making it look like a reanimated skeleton. It growled at her, mouth opening to reveal the lack of teeth.
"Get… Get off!" Meg screamed, throwing a punch.
Meg succeeded in hitting it across the head, releasing the tight grip on her throat. She was able to jump to her feet again and run a few feet more before she was jumped again. "Stop!" The skeletal thing growled at her again. The rumble of the ribcages made it hard to make out, but she finally heard words this time.
"Il…" The skeleton growled. "Iliana…"
'What?' Meg blinked up to the skeleton as she continued to fight. "My friend… Iliana…" The girl continued to stare wide-eyed until the grip tightened on her throat.
"'Stine… 'Stine is fine! Why are you…?"
"My… friend…"
Her… Was this ghost just trying to get to 'Stine and get rid of Meg in the process? Meg refused to let that happen, and she continued to fight back. "Stay away… from my… friend…" Meg blinked back up the ghost and finally recognized something.
The tattered green dress that the ghost was wearing was slightly recognizable. She had seen it elsewhere before. The vision… The one with 'stine… The teen who was Iliana's friend….
"Megara… Stop, Megara…"
The ghost gave another growl. "Megara… Why are you… doing this?"
"My… friend… Together… Forever…"
'What?' "You gone… me and her…" Meg was still confused, but she didn't have long to think as the ghost was still trying to strangle her. Did the Mycenean Greek ghost believe that by killing Meg, she could be with 'stine? Meg would just be dead and her body useless!
"You… you can't! Megara!"
"Iliana…."
Meg's vision was beginning to go gray. She was starting to lose consciousness. Her mouth began to move on its own then.
"What… what would Iliana say… if you killed me?"
The ghost seemed concerned at the question, loosening her grip. "'Stine and I are best friends… if she were here, she'd probably panicking right now… Plus, if I die… how would she react if she knew you were the one to do it?" The ghost's grip loosened even further until her hands were finally off her skin. Meg gasped for air, coughing loudly. The ghostly version of Megara climbed off of her, backing away into the gloom.
Then, it looked like she bumped into a wall, and color bloomed into the space. Meg hesitantly climbed to her feet to see what image was occurring. The ghost had vanished, so she had a moment to see what was going on.
"Iliana!" The voice of Megara from the vision returned, crying loudly.
Meg turned to see Megara running as fast as she could into the large chamber. "Iliana!" Meg turned her head again to see the Great Queen herself, holding the hands of two children, one boy and one girl. They were obviously Egyptian by birth and looked fairly identical to one another, so perhaps twins. Iliana looked up, obviously surprised at her birth name being called. Megara continued to dash into the room, and the Queen quickly pushed the two children to the side of the room.
"I'll only be a moment, Mery, Hepzefa." The Queen breathed gently.
"Yes, Lady Nefertari." The two children dutifully replied.
The two children dashed away just in time for Iliana to catch Megara.
"Megara, what's wrong? I've never seen you so panicked."
"Mon… Monster!" Megara gasped, making Iliana raise her eyebrow.
"Monster?"
There was the slight baying of wolves, and Megara immediately went to hide behind Iliana. The Queen had her eyes narrowed at the door Megara had run in, and Meg turned to see what was coming in. A large pack of gray wolves were starting to prowl into the room, eyes right on Megara. A large imposing figure then stepped in, and Meg immediately recognized him from the description 'Stine had given her from bringing her up to speed. It was Lycaon, the first werewolf! But what was he doing here? The moment he saw Iliana, he gave a fond smile and bow.
"Ah…" The gruff voice of the werewolf echoed in Meg's chest as he spoke. "I did not expect to come across the Great Royal Wife. I do apologize for my haggard appearance, great lady."
Iliana's eyes narrowed, and she straightened her spine.
"Megara, is this the person you were talking about?"
Megara nodded her head, and the Queen's eyes narrowed further. Lycaon kept up the gentlemanly smile though.
"I do apologize for my fiancée's actions."
"Fiancée?!" Meg gasped.
"I am not!" Megara growled, popping her head from behind Iliana's shoulder. "My father gave no such agreement!"
Lycaon gave a chuckle, his scarred face twisting in a sick sort of glee.
"My dear, of course he did." Lycaon chided.
"Lies!"
"Megara…" Iliana interrupted. "Let me handle this."
Megara seemed less than pleased, but she did pop back behind Iliana's shoulder. The Queen looked to Lycaon with a hard as stone expression. "I know Atreus would never give Megara's hand to a monster such as you. Explain yourself." Lycaon gave another bright smile.
"You see, great lady, the lord Atreus had no choice but to agree to this union." Lycaon explained. "That is, if he wanted his town to be safe, he had to give Megara to my care."
Iliana's eyes narrowed further. Meg could see that Megara had begun to cry, face buried in the fabric of the Queen's dress. Iliana seemed to feel the tears, and her face hardened further.
"I cannot, in good conscience, allow this marriage to occur. Megara shall not be given to you."
Lycaon's smile fidgeted for a second. "Through my connection to the patroness of wives, I will not allow it." The smile then became a sneer.
"Great lady… I thought you had more sense than this…"
"I have plenty of sense. Enough sense to know that this arranged marriage is a sham. You have no claim to Megara."
Without a word, a few of Lycaon's wolves charged the Great Queen, and, without a word in return, Iliana waved a hand, and the animals flew backward. "What a disgusting way to ruin Kari's legacy for me." Meg recognized the name of Iliana's family wolf from childhood. The girl then watched as she waved her hand again, and Lycaon's gasp echoed in Meg's ears, making her turn around again.
A large silver spear had just lodged itself in his back and through his chest.
"You…"
The werewolf tried to stand up, but the wound was too great, and he collapsed onto the ground, not to move again. Iliana stared at the body for a long moment before her green eyes flicked over to Meg herself.
"What on earth are you doing here, Meggie?"
Meg blinked. "Oh, dear…" The Queen stepped towards her, hands playing with the most likely bruised skin of her throat. "Meggie, you've been through so much today." Tears immediately pricked at Meg's eyes, but she held them back.
"I'm just tired." Meg replied.
Iliana gave a giggle, lifting a finger to push a hair out of her face.
"I can believe it."
Meg stared at the Queen for a long moment. Didn't 'Stine say she left her mind?
"How are you here? I thought you left?"
Iliana smiled again.
"I did."
Meg was about to grouch that that didn't answer her question when the Queen continued. "What was left of myself in Christine's memory is gone but… the memory you still have of me has a little bit of juice left." Meg blinked again but had no chance to reply as the Queen turned around. "And you!" The beautiful visage of Megara had shifted back into the skeletal version, who quickly dashed away like some sort of Scooby-Doo villain. Iliana was quickly stalking behind her. "Don't you dare run away! I saw what you were doing! What made you think that killing Meg would bring you back?!"
Meg watched the almost comical chase scene between the absolutely fuming Iliana and the skeletal Megara, eyes flicking around the room as they spun around columns in attempts to disorient the other. Iliana did manage to corner her for a second after a minute, barking something about a broken heart, but Meg didn't understand. What scared Meg the most was when the ghost came back towards Meg but only jumped to use her as a shield. "Oh no, you don't!" Iliana continued to charge towards them, but Meg finally lifted her hands.
"Hold on."
Iliana did stop, allowing Meg to act. The girl took a deep calming breath before turning around to face Megara. The skeletal ghost didn't scare her as much after the comical chase. All it did was bring the tears back to Meg's eyes. "You were jealous of me, weren't you? I got to spend all the time with 'Stine and you…" A tear streaked down her cheek. "You've been alone for so long; you've been watching over my shoulder as we grew up again, haven't you."
It was as fast as a blink, but the skeletal ghost of Megara had reverted back to her original skin, tears streaming down her cheeks. A broken heart… Meg suddenly had an idea as to how she was cursed. "You died of a broken heart, didn't you? You lost your best friend and wanted… desperately wanted… to see her again, even if you thought she was dead." Megara gave a loud sob, stopping it halfway. That was answer enough. All she felt now was pity. "Well… you're not alone anymore. Every moment I spend with 'Stine is one between you and Iliana." Another swell of tears streamed down Megara's cheeks before she dashed to wrap her arms around Meg's neck in a tight hug. She sobbed into her shoulder as Meg returned the embrace.
"I'm sorry…" Megara cried. "I'm so sorry…"
Meg didn't reply, only tightening her grip on the ghost. She glanced at Iliana, who smiled back. The Queen looked behind her for a moment, and Meg noticed the prying eyes of the two children she had appeared with. She brought her eyes back to Meg.
"It's time to go, Megara." Iliana breathed.
Megara sobbed for a moment longer before she released Meg. She wiped away her tears before looking stalwartly at Meg.
"I promise that no other ghost will pester you anymore. I will not let them!"
"But… what about resting?" Meg asked. "You've been…"
Megara shook her head. Her tear-stained face was lifted in a bright smile.
"My soul is yours; I will rest one day, but now, I have a lot to make up for."
She quickly wrapped Meg back up in another hug before jumping over to Iliana. "Catch ya around!" Meg gave a smile, nodding.
"Yeah. And quit it with the skeleton look, scares the crap out of me."
Megara giggled loudly but did nod. Iliana laughed as well, wrapping an arm around Megara's shoulder.
"Oh, and before I forget, Meggie." Iliana said as they started to walk away. "Your boy just called you an idiot. I suggest some sort of punishment."
Meg gave a quick salute, generating more laughter. The moment they faded from existence was when Meg started to wake up. She couldn't open her eyes, but she could hear the beeps of medical equipment.
"Idiot." Kaiba's voice reached her ears then. "Letting something like this get to you."
'He did call me an idiot…' Meg forced her eyes open and managed words.
"Who are you calling an idiot, idiot?" Meg huffed at the CEO.
Kaiba had turned around to walk away, but the sound of her voice made him turn back around. His blue eyes stayed on her for a long moment before an almost smile reached his face. "I dare you to say that again. And to my face this time." That got a scoffing laugh.
With no response in sight, Meg worked to sit up. She was absolutely laden with wires and other tubes; there was even an oxygen mask to help her breathe. "What in Andraste's name…" Meg pulled off the mask to level Kaiba with another dirty look. "Where the heck am I? Last thing I remember was talking to Mokuba." Kaiba raised his eyebrow. "Don't give me that look. Everything goes black after…" Meg quickly lifted her hand to her neck. It tingled slightly like her skin normally did when it was bruised. "Oh… I remember now. Megara…"
"What?"
Meg smiled gently, shaking her head. He'd never believe her.
"Nothing. Don't worry about it."
Kaiba raised his eyebrow again. "Would you believe me if I said it?" There was no response, and that gave Meg all the answer she needed. "Just as I thought. Don't worry about it." Kaiba looked like he was going to actually speak, but a new voice appeared.
"Meggie?" 'Stine's voice cut through the air.
Meg turned and smiled at her best friend, standing at the entrance to her room.
"Hey, 'Stine. How was India?"
'Stine gave a heaving sob before dashing to the bed Meg was lying in and wrapping her up in a tight hug.
"Meggie! Meggie!"
Meg felt like she was being strangled again, but this time by a crying witch. She laughed as her best friend began to whack her over the head. "Don't you ever do that to me again! You hear me?!"
"Yes, mother."
Meghan had to stay in the hospital for a few days for the doctors to be sure there wasn't going to be another attack. Christine and the geek squad came every day to make sure she wasn't bored in the hospital, and Kaiba could tell she enjoyed their visits.
When she was finally discharged, she wasn't taken back to her apartment but back to the Kaiba mansion. He knew she was annoyed by how she, once again, barged down the door to his office. This time looking quite angry. "What the heck is going on, Kaiba? I thought I was allowed to go back to my apartment after 'Stine was back from India."
"The doctors recommended that someone keep an eye on you to make sure nothing happened." Mokuba answered in his brother's place. "We didn't want anything to happen to you."
A blush spread across Meghan's cheeks at the words. She crossed her arms petulantly in an attempt to look threatening.
"Well… I…"
"Are you really complaining, Meghan?" Kaiba retorted, a sort of teasing smile lighting up his face. "Especially with what I know about you?"
Meghan's blush only got worse. She definitely remembered that he had watched all of her videos with Christine and all the reactions whenever he was involved.
"Don't call me Meghan."
"Are you going to try and stop me?"
The blush was up to her ears now. After a second of staring down the CEO, Meghan gave a huff and turned on her heel to stomp out of the room. She may have avoided him the rest of the day, but there was no suspicion that she didn't enjoy staying.
The next time Kaiba went to school, which wasn't for at least a few days, Meghan had gone with and, just as the day ended, she appeared at his side rather than attached to Christine's hip.
"Could I… could I have your help, Kaiba?"
Kaiba raised his eyebrow, but Meghan didn't add anything to her question. She only kept looking up at him, a puppy dog look to her face.
"What do you need?"
Her request had been far more complicated than Kaiba had anticipated, but he reluctantly agreed. He 'convinced' a group of workers to pull up the floor right where his seat was so that Meghan could poke through the old beams. She gave a shriek of excitement when she found what she was looking for and quickly climbed out of the hole, wrenching his hand into a tight grip and dragging him out of the room. She ordered his limo to take them to the cemetery not far from the school, and after a nod from Kaiba, the driver did so.
She left him at the entrance of the cemetery, dashing as quickly as she could inside. The CEO thought about leaving, but he followed her into the place of death. He found her in front of a grave with the simple inscription of a girl's name: Tanaka Ayumi. Meghan had just placed something on the grave before lowering her head in almost prayer.
It was a ring.
Kaiba stared at it for a moment. "Is this what she was pestering me for?" Meg nodded her head.
"She lost it before the school was going to be renovated. When she went back to look for it, something fell from a higher level of a nearby apartment building and killed her. She remained behind so that she could continue to look for it."
Meghan kept her eyes closed, not saying anything else. The two remained in silence as Kaiba looked around. He kept the amulet on him for some reason, but nothing approached them like he thought they would. It was quiet, peaceful, but quiet. There was a soft sound that suddenly caught Kaiba's attention, and he looked up.
Sitting up on the grave was a young woman wearing a form-fitting green dress. Her head was gently draped in matching cloth, but her brown hair was pulled back into a long braid. Her face was the exact same as the girl praying gently at the small tombstone. She was smiling gently down at Meghan but soon noticed Kaiba was watching her. Her smile grew into a smirk.
"What are you looking at, Rich Boy?" The woman huffed down at him.
Kaiba narrowed his eyes. "Can't scare me; I've seen far worse than the narrowed eyes of a teenage boy." Kaiba's eyes narrowed even further.
"Quit it, Megara."
Meghan's head finally lifted to look at the ghost. "You know he's not used to seeing things like you. He's probably trying to find a way to explain it away." The woman called Megara burst into laughter at the words. She leaped off the grave just as Meghan stood up, wrapping an arm around her shoulder. Kaiba saw that the limb went slightly through her.
"You're right! I should have remembered that!"
The two giggled, ignoring the look of annoyance on Kaiba's face.
"Last time I checked, you weren't much of a fan of ghosts." Kaiba huffed at the girl. "What happened?"
"We've… we've come to an understanding." Meghan replied, flicking her eyes to Megara beside her.
Megara gave another giggle.
"Uh-huh…"
"Oh, Meg!" Megara giggled. "I don't think he recognizes me!"
Meghan's smile faded, making Megara laugh again. "You can walk away if you don't wanna see."
"You bet I'm gonna do that!"
Meghan turned back towards the entrance of the cemetery and began to walk off. Megara remained for a moment before she spoke again.
"I do believe the last time you saw me, I looked like this!"
She turned back to him, and the skeletal face of the creature that had been strangling Meghan both in her room and in the hospital greeted him. Kaiba flinched back, and the face was gone, returning to the smiling face of Meghan's twin. She was laughing at his reaction before skipping off after her twin. The CEO remained behind for a second before moving.
Meghan was at the entrance of the cemetery and was just leaving when Christine reached the gate. The blonde looked confused at Meghan leaving the cemetery, apparently not seeing the ghost skipping behind her. Her first words appeared when Kaiba approached.
"Meggie in a cemetery?" Christine breathed in a confused tone. "What on earth is going on?"
"It's just as confusing if you know what's going on." Kaiba huffed in reply.
Christine gave him a raised eyebrow, but Kaiba didn't reply, only moving to head back to his limo and head home.
He'd had enough hocus pocus bullshit for one day.

Lemme go!
'No! I finally caught you!'
I let you catch me! The chapter's over! The story's over!
'Not yet! You have to finish the last one!'
Are you asking to die sooner?!
'I may well be! You're procrastinating!'
I am not!
*Yami's watching this from the side and he looks to the audience.*
"She is procrastinating as she doesn't want it to end. Please sit tight; she will get it out."
