Ancient Runes Extra Credit Assignment - Write about Arthur Weasley

Muggle Contraptions

He had been ten the first time he had been lost in the muggle world. He had been scared that time, terrified about all the tall people he didn't recognize in their strange clothing. Very few of them wore cloaks as it the leaves were only beginning to yellow with the beginning of Autumn, and he knew that none of them carried wands, or they would have used them by now as witches and wizards tend to be fond of doing.

He had searched for his parents until his neck had begun to ache at the odd angle in which he was forced to look to see the faces of the adults around him. Finally, he left the bustling crowd and entered a quieter area covered in shadows and nearly dead silent.

The silence felt strange next to the harsh, loudness of the people only a few steps away but it was a reprieve from being pushed backwards and forwards from person to person among the bustling crowd.

He noticed a small pile of broken bits and pieces that looked firm enough to hold him, and began to slip and stumble up the mountain of debris. His foot stood on a firm looking piece of what looked like furniture, but as soon as he put his weight on it, the piece broke off.

For one horrible moment, he could feel himself helplessly suspended in the air, before gravity took hold and he was falling. It was just like when he had climbed the tree in their backyard, and had fallen off, except it wasn't. His parents hadn't been there to stop his fall, but a thin hook with a long piece of something thicker than parchment had been.

The hook had somehow managed to catch onto his clothing as he had been climbing. Carefully reaching the ground once again, he tugged at the hook to make it come free. There were barely visible numbers that were etched onto both sides of the parchment-like thing past the hook. He sat down and began looking carefully at the strange contraption.

That was how his parents had found him, minutes later, fiddling with the strange object that had perhaps saved his life.
