Chapter 1: A Halloween Surprise

On a particularly boring day, Subaru had started to feel homesick. He had come back to the bedroom and was lounging around on his futon. Unbeknownst to him, he had a silent observer standing behind the slightly ajar door. Beatrice was standing with her head tilted to the side to gaze through. It was very unusual to see Subaru without a smile and she didn't like the grimace plastered across his face instead. She decided to quietly approach him.

Beatrice: "..."

Beatrice: "Hmm..."

Beatrice: "Grrr..."

Beatrice: "What is wrong with you, I suppose? Why are you looking so sad, in fact?"

Subaru: "Huh? Oh, Beako. I didn't hear you come in."

Beatrice: "Nevermind that, I suppose. Did Betty do something to upset you, in fact?"

Subaru: "Not at all Beako. Just feeling a little homesick is all."

Beatrice: "Is that so? I haven't heard much about your home, I suppose. Did you have a family, in fact?"

Subaru: "Yep and I still do. I guess I miss them a little extra today. I keep finding myself thinking about family events and gatherings."

Beatrice: "Events? Gatherings? Like formal dances and parties, I suppose?"

Subaru: "Haha, not quite. More like holidays and birthdays."

Beatrice: "Holidays? What holidays, I suppose?"

Subaru: "Well there are too many to explain. My mom used to have a book of holidays when I was a kid. Definitely would help to have that right now."

Beatrice: "Is that all, I suppose? Just take my hand and imagine that book. Betty will do her best to recreate it, in fact."

Subaru: "Huh? Can you do that?"

Beatrice grabbed Subaru's hand and demanded that he focus on the book in question. Subaru closed his eyes and after a few moments, a small children's book on holidays materialized in Beatrice's hand.

Beatrice: "See, that wasn't so hard, I suppose."

Subaru: "Beako, that's amazing."

Beatrice: "Betty already knows that, I suppose. However, I do still find enjoyment in hearing it, in fact."

Beatrice flipped through the book with a puzzled look on her face. Subaru realized that she probably couldn't read the language. After a few minutes, Beatrice stopped on a page and her eyes went wide. She passed the book to Subaru and pointed at the page. Subaru could see a full page of candy and treats with children in costumes.

Beatrice: "What is this, I suppose?"

Subaru: "That would be Halloween. Children dress up in costumes and go 'Trick or Treating'. They go door to door and collect candy and treats at night."

Beatrice: "I see. May I borrow this book, I suppose?"

Subaru: "Well sure, but-"

Beatrice stood up and ran out of the room before Subaru could stop her. He sat down puzzled and after some time passed, decided to take a nap. Later that evening he heard a knock at the bedroom door.

Subaru: "Come in."

Adella opened the door with a small bag in her hand. She approached Subaru and offered him the parcel.

Adella: "My my Master, we are certainly filling Lady Beatrice's head with ideas today."

Subaru: "What do you mean?"

Adella: "Fufufu, I am sure you will find out soon. Please take this for when that time comes. I must also prepare, so I will take my leave."

Adella swiftly exited the room and shut the door. Subaru opened the bag and saw a variety of pastries and candies that appeared to be homemade. This only served to confuse Subaru even more. After a few moments of examining the candy, he heard another knock.

Subaru: "Come in."

No response, another knock came instead.

Subaru: "Hold on"

Subaru walked over to the door and pulled it open. What he saw was a very expectant Beatrice. She had replaced her dress with a frilly white one that had long sleeves. Her hair had bats instead of bows and she had what appeared to be sharp fangs where her teeth once were. To top it all off she had a large black cape wrapped around her. Subaru looked down at the small spirit dumbfounded.

Beatrice: "Trick or treat!"

Subaru: "Beako?"

Beatrice: "TRICK OR TREAT!"

Subaru: "O-of course."

Subaru handed her the bag of candies that Adella had provided him moments prior. Beatrice examined the treats happily and tucked them away in a small bag at her side.

Beatrice: "Thank you, I suppose."

Subaru: "Are you supposed to be a vampire?"

Beatrice: "I am not familiar with that creature, I suppose. I liked this costume in the book so I had Adella help me recreate it, in fact. What is a vampire?"

Subaru: "It's a creature that takes after a bat and feasts on blood."

Beatrice: "B-blood? I thought these teeth were to facilitate the eating of treats, I suppose. I'm not sure if I like that, in fact."

Subaru: "You look great Beako. I just didn't expect it. Thanks for reminding me of home. I assume you are going to Adella's room next?"

Beatrice: "That is correct, I suppose."

Subaru: "Mind if I join you?"

Without waiting for her answer, Subaru stood up and took her hand. Beatrice didn't completely understand, but she was relieved that Subaru was smiling brightly again. So the two ventured to Adella's room to commence the first and only Halloween ever in the Imagine Castle.

Or so Subaru thought, the very next afternoon he heard a familiar knock at the door.

Subaru: "Beako, is that you?"

No response.

Subaru: "Beako, Halloween is only once a year."

Subaru opened the door to inform Beatrice of this fact but was utterly mortified at what he saw.

Beatrice was barefoot wearing a short white tank top with black shorts that could only be described as hotpants. A pair of red suspenders stretched across her mid section. Subaru noticed that she also had a pair of cat ears and matching tail. Subaru turned his head and blushed.

Subaru: "Beako, what on earth are you doing!?"

Beatrice: "Well, I know that Halloween is only once a year, I suppose. Yet, Adella informed me that there was an exemption if I showed up to the room dressed like this. She said 'there was no way that Master Subaru wouldn't give you a treat', in fact."

Subaru pulled Beatrice into the room and demanded that she change immediately before storming out down the hall.

Subaru: "ADIE!"

Beatrice stood alone in the room thoroughly confused as to why Adella was in trouble.

Hey everyone, I started this series of extra shorts to go with my main series Re:Zero FF Beatrice Heart Crossing. I am making these shorts as a thank you to the fans and an extra pick me up during the holidays. I am very happy to say that I have scheduled regular releases for the main story on Sundays starting with Chapter 2.
