Chapter 2: A Thanksgiving Feast

One day Subaru happened to be lying in bed reading a book when he was approached by Beatrice. She didn't say a word, but she kept staring at him from behind his book. He moved the book to block her gaze and she stepped to the side in response. Subaru kept this up for several minutes until Beatrice snapped her fingers and sent the book flying.

Subaru: "Hey! I was reading that!"

Beatrice: "Not anymore, I suppose."

Subaru: "You're a real brat, you know that?"

Beatrice: "Nevermind that, what is this bird, in fact?

Beatrice produced a small book from behind her back that Subaru recognized as the holiday book he had given her. She opened the book and flipped to a page featuring a giant turkey along with a large table filled with dishes. Subaru noticed her eyes sparkle as she viewed the pictures of desserts.

Subaru: "You have one track mind when it comes to food, huh?"

Beatrice: "Betty doesn't know what you are talking about, I suppose. I asked about the strange bird, in fact."

Subaru: "That's a turkey. That holiday is called Thanksgiving. It's a time when people eat with their families to celebrate what they are thankful for."

Beatrice: "Families…eat…"

After paying attention to the explanation, Beatrice spun in place and darted out of the bedroom. As she ran down the hall, Subaru could hear her clambering down the stairs. Subaru wondered what events he had set in motion as he voiced his thoughts out loud.

Subaru: "What have I done this time…"

Now that the source of the calamity had left, Subaru retrieved his book and continued reading. A few hours later, he heard a knock at the door. He walked over and opened the door to reveal Adella.

Adella: "Master Subaru, would you please join Lady Beatrice and myself for dinner?"

Subaru: "Sure… Adie did Beako do something weird again?"

Adella: "I wouldn't say weird...Lady Beatrice is just a creative soul. Please be kind to her."

After delivering the cryptic message, Adella started to head down stairs while Subaru followed. Once they entered the dining room he saw what all the awkwardness was about. The table was filled with various dishes. Fresh mashed potatoes with steam rising off of them complemented with light brown gravy in a large porcelain gravy boat. Hot rolls were wrapped in a cloth sitting in a basket next to a large casserole dish that was covered in crumbles. Large bowls of baked sweet potatoes and steamed vegetables sat next to a cutting board of brightly hued cheeses. It appeared that an entire second table was set up just for desserts. Several pies and cakes littered the auxiliary table. However, the amount of food wasn't the most notable thing in the room. That award went to Beatrice, who sat at the table wearing a long matte black dress with exaggerated white lapels. She had a white half apron tied around her waist and a large white bonnet with her hair tied back underneath it. Subaru was awestruck as Adella guided him to his seat. Once everyone was seated, Beatrice spoke.

Beatrice: "Now we can eat, I suppose!"

Subaru: "Wait a minute! You just did this for the food! Don't even get me started on your outfit!"

Beatrice: "You said this was a holiday about eating, in fact! This is proper attire for such a holiday, I suppose!"

Subaru: "Fine, I can't deny you do look pretty cute...but I said it was a holiday about being thankful!"

Beatrice blushed while she was practically standing in her chair to yell at Subaru. Adella seized the opportunity to get a word in.

Adella: "Please don't fight Master's. Why don't we go around and say what we are thankful for before eating? I'll begin, I am thankful for my Master's and the beautiful world they have created."

Subaru: "That's a great idea! I'm thankful for my friends, old and new."

Adella: "Well said, Master Subaru. Lady Beatrice, it's your turn."

Beatrice: "Ehh… I guess I'm… thankful for… my-"

Beatrice was interrupted by a loud crash from the kitchen. Subaru surveyed the room and asked the one question that had been bothering him.

Subaru: "Wait, Beako. Where is the turkey?"

At that moment, a large feathered turkey ran into the dining room. Before anyone could react, the bird darted under the table and through the legs of Beatrice's chair. The small spirit froze as the chair tilted to the side and came crashing to the ground. Beatrice however, remained in the air. Beatrice looked around to see the cause of her suspension and saw Subaru staring down at her. He had stood up and grabbed Beatrice from her chair before she could hit the ground. She froze for a moment as her face slowly turned to a crimson red before she spoke.

Beatrice: "I-I-IDIOT!"

Subaru: "I thought you knew you were supposed to cook it!"

After that, the scene calmed down as the three denizens of the castle enjoyed their feast. Adella even provided corn for the turkey to eat. Subaru made a decent attempt at devouring the impossible amount of food before starting to doze off in his chair. Adella finished her dinner and began to collect dishes for cleaning and storage. As she passed by Beatrice she spoke.

Adella: "That was quite a feast Lady Beatrice. I dare say it took the energy out of Master Subaru."

Beatrice: "Yes, I suppose. Only an idiot could fall asleep at the dinner table, in fact."

Adella: "Indeed. Still, I wonder what you were thankful for after all?"

As she asked her question, Adella zipped off into the kitchen. Beatrice thought as she looked at the sleeping Subaru's face. She whispered her statement to no one in particular.

Beatrice: "I'm thankful for Subaru, I suppose."
