Bonus Chapter:
Jay has been in the hospital a week, although it wasn't as bad as he likes to complain about it, he was ready to go. He does feel the staff went a little overboard taking care of him. Whether it was because Will's a doctor here or that he's a cop, he wasn't sure but the pampering was something he was not used to.
They kept telling him he had been through a lot and his body isl agreeing. He's still very sore. It'll be weeks before his bones heal, and more weeks until cleared for full duty. He has some rehab to do, but the District will let him back on restricted duty while he does that.
But right now, he's ready.
"Well look who's all 'bright-eyed and bushy-tailed'! An excited Will greets his brother walking into Jay's room Dr. Marcel behind him.
Jay slowly opens his eyes and thinks 'When did I close them?'
"How much coffee have you had this morning?" He sarcastically asks.
"Enough for both of us. Ready to get that chest tube out?"
Jay tries to respond with a 'What do you think?' look but it morphs into a yawn.
"Why am I so tired? I've been sleeping for a week." Jay comments.
"Your body's still healing, give it time." Marcel answers as he looks over Jay's monitors.
"You're doing very well, so well in-fact we're going to take that catheter out today."
That gets Jay's attention. "And then I can go home, right." more than a statement than a question.
"Yes and no." Will chimes in. "You still need someone to look after you until you regain some strength. I've arranged a rehab facility for the next week."
"Rehab facility? Will, come on. Why can't I stay with you?" Jay pleads.
"No Jay. I'm too busy and you need adult supervision. We all know how you follow Drs orders."
Dr. Marcel just smiles at the brothers' interaction. "Come on Will, left him off the hook."
Jay looks at Marcel questioning.
Will starts to chuckle. "Alright, alright." he turns to Jay, "Hailey said she'll take you in, if you'd agree to..."
"YES." Jay cuts him off, "Whatever it is, whatever I have to do, yes!"
Will just smiles.
A nurse brings in a tray for the catheter removal.
Marcel moves it to Jay's left side. "This isn't the most pleasant experience. I'll be as quick as I can." He unsnaps and removes Jay's gown.
Jay eyes the tray then looks to Marcel and nods.
"Just need to move your arm here. Will?"
"Yup." Will moves to Jay's left-side. He slowly and gently raises Jay's left arm.
Jay hisses and winces, "Oh that smarts!"
Will continues slowly.
"Stop!" Jay snaps
Will stills and looks at Jay. He is breathing heavily and brings his right hand to his ribs.
"Let's wait a moment." Marcel says observing Jay. His heart rate is up.
"You're doing great."
Jay looks at Marcel, controlling his breathing.
"Ready, Jay?"
Jay nods. Will begins to move his arm again. More hisses, winces and a "OW" grunt when he's reaching a limit.
"That's it Jay." Will stops moving.
Jay is grateful not to be moving but the position is painful. His broken scapular spine and scapula protesting.
Marcel wastes no time in removing the adhesive covering over the entry point of the tube. He then removes the placement sutures. He looks at Jay, "Ready?"
Jay gives a nod.
"Alright, now take a few big breaths and on the third one, blow out. Got it?"
Jay again nods.
"Here we go." Marcel encourages
Jay takes a one big breath and winces through the exhale, again a big breath and again grimaces through the exhale, the last big breath- he starts to exhale and Marcel with a firm grip on the tube pulls straight down removing it.
"AHHHHH!" Jay releases in pain. "Good LORD!" His right hand goes to his ribs, holding his breath.
Marcel gently blocks Jay's hand. "Keep breathing." He cleans the area where the tube was and places a waterproof adhesive bandage over it. He nods to Will. Will starts to move Jay's arm back down.
The movement is not welcomed. "OW…..OW… AHHHH." Jay protests until his arm is placed still.
"Now, that wasn't so bad." Will comments.
Jay stares at Will through a grimace.
Marcel listens to Jay breath. "Sounds good. Get some more rest. I'll check on you in a few."
"Then I go home." Jay states
"If all is well, then you go home." Marcel leaves the room smiling.
Will gives Jay some time to recover. He's looking over the monitors and takes out his stethoscope and approaches Jay.
Jay looks at Will but doesn't say anything. Will listens intently, eyes closed, moving his stethoscope around Jay's chest. When satisfied he pulls back and signs. He places the gown back on Jay.
"You're very lucky."
"Don't I know it." Jay responds, face in a frown but the pain is subsiding.
Will walks over to Jay's right side. "Looks like the sutures can be removed. You ready for that?"
"Remove away!"
At Hailey's house:
Hailey's grateful Voight gave her the time off to take care of Jay. She thinks Voight knows it's been hard on her, long days working cases and then being with Jay at the hospital. But she just needed that reassurance at the end of the day to see him, to see for herself that he was alright.
She takes one last run through the house making sure she has everything. Will gave her a key to Jay's apartment to grab anything extra he may need. She has clothes and the necessities.
As she walks into the bathroom, she looks into the shower, Kevin was nice enough to install a shower wand and a removable seat so Jay can sit and have a shower by himself. It truly is the little things.
She wanders in the kitchen, going through cabinets and then the refrigerator. She thinks she has everything. Her phone alerts an incoming text.
^ Jay's chomping at the bit. Ready when you are.^ Will
Hailey smiles just imaging how Jay must be right now.
^Leaving in a few.^ Hailey.
At the hospital:
Hailey can hear the brothers as she approaches Jay's room.
"I don't think you had to pull that hard. That's all I'm saying." Jay complains
"Hey, who went to medical school? I did. I know how to remove sutures." Will counters
"Anyone can remove sutures, just some people are gentler than others." - Jay
"Oh, you want gentle….."- Will
"Hey" Hailey interrupts. "Heard someone's ready to go."
Jay and Will both look in her direction. Jay is dressed and sitting on the bed. Immobilizer for his left shoulder, left leg up higher resting on the bed and his right leg on the ground. Will is sitting in a chair in front of him.
"Yes, please." Jay remarks
"Oh you must really want something, being all polite." Will teases.
Jay gives him a 'come on' look. Hailey smiles at their banter. It's rare to see a causal interaction between them.
"You sure you still want to do this Hailey? He can be a handful. I got some instructions to help." Will can't resist some more teasing.
"I think I can handle him."
The nurse walks in with a wheelchair ready when they are. Jay sees the chair and doesn't even complain. He slowly adjusts himself to get off the bed. Will gets up and helps Jay, supporting his right side.
"I got it. I got it." Jay responds to his brother's help.
"Alright, all you."
Jay slowly gets off the bed and sits in the wheelchair muffing some grunts and groans. Hailey looks to Jay concerned.
"I'm OK, just sore."
Will confirmed with a solid 'yes' nod. "He'll be for quite some time. Please make sure he takes his meds on time." Will says handing Hailey a bag with his script in it. "Also some instructions for care but you can always call or text me if you have any questions."
"Thanks Will." Hailey says taking the bag.
"As for you little brother, glad to see you going home, take it easy and rest." Will leans down and gives Jay a half-hug.
"Thanks Will, for everything." Jay says sincerely.
At Hailey's house:
The drive was uneventful and the walk in was much better the second time thanks to pain medication taken on a regular basis.
Jay walks from the front door to the kitchen and stops at the counter, suddenly feeling exhausted and working through the pain of moving.
"You OK?" Hailey asks, placing the bag on the counter.
"Yeah. That little walk just took more energy than I expected."
"Will said you'd be asleep within 15 minutes of getting here."
"Oh he did, did he?"
"Come on." She gestures toward the reclining couch. "Let's get you settled in for a nap."
Jay doesn't move. "I'd like to take a shower if I could…..if it's not too much trouble." His voice is gentle as if asking for something precious. "I'll probably need some help."
"No trouble. Will got you a plastic sling. Kevin put in a shower seat and a shower-head wand so you can shower mostly by yourself."
Jay is surprised by this. "Wow. Thanks, Hailey." He can't suppress the yawn that takes him.
"But first nap. Don't need you falling asleep on your feet."
Hailey guides Jay to the couch and gets him settled in. She brings him a glass of water and makes note of the time for his next pain medication dose.
Jay's eyes are barely open when he says, "Thank you. You've done so much for me." His voice trailing off, full of sleep.
"Don't mention it." She places a throw over him. "We're good." She whispers caressing his forehead with the back of her fingers. "We're good."
