Chapter 7:
A week had gone by, and Helga laid out in her bed, she was still at Rhonda's but after setting up the posters she took from home and being able to lounge on her laptop, it was feeling more comfortable. She got a message from Rhonda on her phone letting her know she was turning in early, she had to be at school early, since she was in charge of the prom's preparations since it was this Saturday. Texting her back an 'okay', Helga rolled over onto her back, sighing. It was so quiet and peaceful not being stuck with Bob. She looked at the time, it was around 10pm, he usually came in 2 hours later, drunk and loud, making a mess in the kitchen she had to clean up in the morning before school. She smiled and closed her eyes. Freedom was nice.
The sound of her buzzing alarm sent Helga groggily reaching around for it. She finally slapped it off and sat up, rubbing her eyes. These satin sheets were enough to make her want to skip class forever. Collapsing back on them for a few more moments she sighed and rolled out of bed. Her laptop and books were still all over, the aftermath of her suddenly passing out. Shrugging she headed into the bathroom to shower and get ready.
When she returned she was surprised to see a platter left by the bed. It smelled heavenly and as she packed her things for school she pigged-out on the delicious meal. On her way downstairs she took the now empty platter into the kitchen, shocking the maid from earlier. "Hey Lydia." Helga smiled.
"Helga," the woman replied. "I hope breakfast was to your liking, Rhonda's advice was to feed you like you were a man…" Lydia blushed apologetically. Helga only barked a laugh.
"That's exactly how to judge my food, Lydia." She patted her on the back and said her goodbyes, heading for the bus stop. Despite her horrible first days here she had to admit staying here was weird but it could have been worse. Arnold had started to avoid her, but, the less contact with him the better. She had been strutting into class, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and ready to bully the masses.
"Well don't we look miiiiighty fine this morning." The rough voice of Wolfgang ripped Helga back to reality. She didn't even have it in her to be mean to him at the moment, even if he had ulterior motives to being so kind, she knew how to defend herself if he got touchy so it was whatever.
"Criminey, do you often stakeout people's homes?" She stated, raising a brow to him.
"Well no, but now that I've seen you go in with slippers and horribad bed-head and come out looking oh-so-delicious, I think I'll stakeout the homes of ladies more often, never know what surprises are in store. And it's been a week I could have been stalking you, day one." He beamed, "Need a ride?" He added.
"Sure." She didn't bother to argue. Helga may have gotten back to her usual bitchy self and using Wolf for rides was part of that trail back to her Godliness. Delicious Slave Labor. She didn't bother about how to handle seeing Arnold and Lila, they weren't too crazy with the PDA, so as long as she didn't pay them mind and was able to drown out the annoying banter of the two of them, she was just fine.
"Wow that was easy." Wolfgang chuckled and sped off, and for the first time in a year Helga felt like she could handle life, it's amazing what a week of good sleep does to a woman.
X-X-X-X-X
"Ah it's good to be myself once more." Helga smiled up at the gate to Hilwood High, her demeanor calm and collected like every day before. Being an optimistic morning person wasn't really her thing, but after a pretty damn good week, and not having to run into that Arnie-Tard again, she was feeling like a million bucks. Wolfgang did nothing but wish her luck and pull off, leaving her to face her day. Grinning she marched up the steps, determined to have yet another good week. Which was exactly how her day had panned out, that is until it was time to go to her last class for the day.
"Oh Helga~" The kind voice of Lila grated on Helga's ears, like scratching on a chalkboard.
"Oh, hey, Lila." Helga said flatly. The brunette practically floated up the steps to link arms with her. "Last Sunday was ever-so interesting wasn't it? Arnie being back after so many years? We didn't do much talking that night. I'm oh-so sorry for that." Helga rolled her eyes and unlinked arms with her quickly. "I guess you're tired still, so am I, Arnold sure is rough in the bedroom." Lila purred, almost making Helga trip on nothing.
"W-what, why the hell are you telling me, Lila." Helga growled when Lila turned, the glint of malice on her face made Helga's blood run cold.
"Why? My dear Helga, because I know ever-so well how much it would crush you to know I've been with the man you love, intimately." Lila giggled and excused herself politely as they parted ways in the hall right before it grew crowded...what timing.
"W-where did that come from so suddenly…" She couldn't move, stuck in her own weakness, she just stared into nothing.
"Helga? Helga? HELGA!" Phoebe's voice finally cut through Helga's tuning out the world. Shaking her friend some woke the blonde up more. Helga noticed she was surrounded by Pheebs, Rhonda, Patty, Nadine and Sheena. The hallway was long empty, thankfully Sheena happened by before someone else noticed Helga and made a scene.
"Oh, sorry guys, I just don't feel well is all." Helga admitted, she did feel sick, sicker than she'd ever been in her life. She turned and left the building telling her friends not to follow her, of course they protested until she glared at them demanding to be left alone.
"But Helga… you look so miserable suddenly, after such a good day,I'm worried about you." Phoebe insisted but was silenced by Helga's forehead suddenly leaning on her shoulder.
"Pheebs, I just got to get some air." Helga pleaded. Her voice was so torn down it almost broke Phoebe's heart to let her go.
"Be safe." She whispered to Helga, who nodded.
"I'll be fine, gonna walk back to Rhonda's and lay down." Helga stood up and made her way down the steps.
She never made it to Rhonda's, stopping at the playground that was built in the old lot, she and the gang used to play football in as kids. Sitting on a swing she rocked idly. Her mind was in a fluster. It was like as soon as she decided on something and wanted to work on bettering herself and her pathetic love for Arnold, something always happens that sent her in a spiral.
"This seat taken, Pataki?" Helga didn't need to look up to know Wolfgang was the one talking to her, she shrugged and he sat in the swing next to her. "Wanna talk?" When she shook her head he just sat there silently.
"She's doing this to torment me." Helga finally said after a while.
"Huh?" Wolfgang said lifting his head to look at her, her eyes were watering once again and his brows furrowed. "Is this about that skirt dweeb, Arnold?" She stayed silent but nodded.
"Today at school, I felt like I was getting a handle on being able to see him and Lila together, but it's like she knew it somehow, she singled me out and told me her and Arnold… That her and Arnold… were 'together'." Helga made the quotation marks in the air with her hands and bit her lip. "I know it's none of my business, but then why would she tell me, her sudden interest in Arnold didn't start till he was finally paying me mind, more than he ever had."
Wolfgang listened to her as she explained how close Arnold and herself had become after her mother left home, and as soon as they were really getting close, Lila had her magical 'change of heart' toward him. "What a bitch." He stated flatly
"Yeah, by the way, why are you seemingly everywhere lately?" Helga said wiping her face and glaring at him.
He chuckled and pointed across the street. "When my mom moved back to Hilwood she moved into that house right there. I was just finishing a bowl of Rice Crispy's when I noticed some poor little blonde lady sitting on the swings."
"I see. So it's just my misfortune that I keep running into you. Criminey my life sure has hit rock bottom." She teased.
"One day your words will kill me, Pataki." Wolfgang sighed. "Do you feel better talking at least?"
"Yea I do actually, this has all been just one big roller-coaster this year. I wish it would come to an end already." Helga sighed.
"I hear you on that. Well school will be out in a bit so you better hurry on your way." Wolf stated as he looked to his phone for the time.
"I think I'll sit here a few more minutes then head out, thanks for keeping me company, you're not such a bad guy when you're not robbing 9 year olds." Helga laughed.
"Yeah, yeah. See ya around Pataki." He said crossing the street.
Helga watched him and then came to a conclusion. "Hey pig-nose!" She called out to him and he turned to complain before she continued. "Can I still take you up on that prom date offer?" She smiled some, it was the only way she could repay his kindness, since she sure as hell wasn't going to sleep with him like he probably wanted.
"Sure thing, Mono-brow." Wolfgang laughed and went inside.
Helga found herself swinging a bit longer than she originally planned, maybe an hour or so had passed since she spoke with Wolfgang. Gearing up to leave she stood up, before hearing a familiar giggle in the alley nearby. Lila's cheery laughter would have sent Helga briskly walking the other way, until she heard another familiar voice, and it was not, Arnold's.
"This is what Arnold gets for telling me what to do…" Arnie's voice sent multitudes of confusing through Helga. Curiosity got the best of her and she peeked between the tall wooden fences. If her jaw could physically hit the floor, it would have. Lila was up against the wall of a house with Arnie not only feeling her up but, he was tugging her skirt up. Helga covered her mouth, disgusted that anyone would let Arnie touch them like that for one thing, and then, horrified that Lila was fooling around with Arnie, behind Arnold's back. She turned and sped off her backpack banging into her back as she ran down the street. What was she going to do? Should she tell Arnold? It wasn't her business! But still! Her mind was racing as she ran and she hardly noticed the car coming right for her.
There were no brisk rescues from some knight in shining armor for Helga, at the last possible moment she noticed the car and was able to dodge the hit, getting angry honks from the nerve wrecked driver. "Sorry!" She yelled out to them, deciding it was best to calm down and walk the rest of the way to Rhonda's now.
