The enemy within

Teal'c had finally been assigned to SG1, Jack was pleased with this, however it came as a result of the death of Kawalsky. He didn't hold anything against Teal'c, he knew Kawalsky had died on the table. Dealing with, or not dealing with, death is something Jack had gotten quite accustomed to on the line of duty- the thing was, it just sucked.

The team were gearing up, in silence. Sam knew that both Daniel and the Colonel were grieving. One the loss of a friend, the other the fear that he'd never get his wife back. Though she was ready to slip back into the supportive role she had taken on to Daniel since they returned from Abydos, she felt like perhaps Colonel O'Neill's situation may take precedent. While debating who to direct her encouragement to, she glanced at Teal'c and was overcome with sympathy for him. He had left everything he knew, was he grieving too? Did he have family? Friends? Or was he alone? As she tightened her vest and filled it with weapons, snacks and other knickknacks, her head began to hurt. Not because of the thinking, but because of the incident in the elevator with Kawalsky. And there she was, full circle. She didn't have any words of comfort to offer the Colonel, she'd already given him her condolences. One more try wouldn't hurt, right?

"Sir, again, I'm sorry about what happened with Major Kawalsky. It should not have gone down the way it did. He was such a great guy, I only wish I could have known him longer."

Jack took a deep breath, "Yeah he was Carter." Jack patches down a pocket, he looks up at her and twitches into a half smile. "For what it's worth, I think he was a fan of you." Sam smiled sadly back, she reassuringly stroked his arm and then reached for a knife to pack. Jack cleared his throat, "Daniel, I'm sure we'll figure a way to save Sha're. We won't let what happened to Charlie happen to her." Jack says. Teal'c and Sam felt moved by the Colonel, the fact that he used his situation as a way to empathize with Daniel really illustrated what type of leader he is.

"I appreciate that Jack. At least I know she is still in there, Kawalsky was."

Jack's brow twinged with doubt as he gave Carter a look, one which she mirrored. Through the corner of his eye he could see Teal'c's face had turned, perhaps as a means of not having to deceive a teammate before he had even embarked on his first mission with SG1. He checks the rounds in his P45, packs it and then nods at his team. "All set?"

"Yes sir." Carter stands a little taller, he can tell there is a cadet-like enthusiasm to her, he finds it endearing. He hopes it won't get annoying.

"Indeed O'Neill, I am ready to depart." Teal'c says, practically out the door already.

Daniel was juggling with guns, Jack tilts his head wondering how good of an idea is it that Daniel carry more ammo than he has coordination. "Yep, yep… let's go Jack." Daniel replies, stumbling out the door, focusing on what goes where.

The team walked towards the embarkation room; they weren't people for pointless small talk. Plus, Sam and Daniel talk so much that there wouldn't be room for that anyway. As they proceeded down the corridor they traded snacks, mocked Daniel and put in wagers for what they may come across on their mission. Anticipation brewed, the blast doors opened and off they went through the stargate.
