Kelly was back out in the waiting room with the rest of the group. Waiting to hear if Shelby was going to be alright. A nurse had come and told them she was being rushed to surgery for internal bleeding.
Kelly sat there feeling helpless. Kelly soon found himself falling asleep. Remembering a happier time with Shelby.
Dream/Flashback
Kelly was sitting in his room working on some homework when there was a knock at his bedroom door.
"It's open." Kelly didn't look up from what he was doing as the person entered his room closing the door. The person then walked over and snaked there arms around Kelly's shoulders. Kelly breathed in the familiar warm vanilla scent of her perfume. "Hey babe."
"Hey hun." Shelby planted a kiss to Kelly's cheek. "Whatcha working on?"
"Math."
"Well that sounds boring." Kelly snickered at her.
"Yeah well I have to get it done or I'll fail."
"Do you want some help?"
Kelly put down his pencil and turned to face his girlfriend. "Are you actually going to help or pretend help and then strip me of my clothes?" Kelly had this devilish grin on his face.
Shelby smacked his shoulder. "Kelly Severide how dare you? I would never do such a thing." She pretended to be hurt by his comment.
"Well that's what happened the last time. Remember?"
"I have no idea what you are talking about. Must be your other girlfriend."
"Oh that's right. It was." Shelby's jaw dropped and she hit Kelly in the shoulder again. He was laughing at her. "Babe I am kidding."
"You better be."
Kelly pulled her on too his lap. "You're the only girl for me."
"And you're the only guy for me." Shelby plants a kiss to Kelly's lips. "Alright but seriously let me help you. I'm a genius when it comes to math."
"Alright sounds good." Kelly couldn't help but smile at this girl. It was in this moment he realized that she maybe the one.
End Flashback/Dream
Kelly was woken up by Scott when Shelby's parents had arrived at the hospital. Scott just pointed and Kelly got up and walked over to them.
"Mr. and Mrs. Jensen." Shelbys parents turned their attention to Kelly.
"Kelly what happened? Why is Shelby here?" Her mother was panic with fear.
"It was her Ex. They got into a fight and he shoved her."
"Nick? No that boy was so sweet. He wouldn't hurt a fly."
Chris then walked over to Shelby's parents knowing Kelly was having a hard time. "It's true Mr and Mrs. Jensen. I was there when it happened."
"Chris are you being serious?"
"Unfortunately I am Mrs. Jensen."
Shelby's mother turned her attention to her husband. "That explains so much and why she was happy we were moving again. She's always hated moving until this last time."
"There is something you two should know." Both of Shelby's parents turned their attention back to Kelly. "Uh She was rushed into emergency surgery a few hours ago due to internal bleeding. We haven't gotten any updates since then."
Shelby's dad could tell them was something else. He could read people like a book. Chris could tell Kelly didn't want to break the news to them. "Shelby had a miscarriage." Chris blurted it out without thinking.
"She what?"
"Oh my god." Shelbys mom had to take a seat. Her sweet innocent child that did no wrong had gotten pregnant.
Kelly tried to speak. "Mr. Jensen..."
Shelby's dad cut him off. "Stay away from my daughter. You are a bad influence on her! She has never done anything like this till now!"
Kelly just stood there and took her dad yelling at him. He did feel responsible for what had happened. He should of noticed when Nick left the room.
A doctor came out into the waiting room. "Are you Shelby's parents?"
Shelby's mother stood up. "Yes."
"Can you come with me?" Shelbys mom took her husband arm and they followed the doctor.
Chris placed a comforting hand on Kelly's shoulder. "Kelly they are just upset. Let them cool off it'll be alright."
Kelly shoved his hands into his pockets. "But their right."
"Shelby? Innocent? Please Kelly you and I both know that's not true. Shelby just hid things well from her parents." Chris led Kelly back over to the waiting room chairs and they both took a seat.
A few minutes later a nurse came out and asked them all to leave as they wouldn't be allowed back to see Shelby. Her parents had asked she had no visitors.
Kelly stormed out of the hospital with the rest of the group behind him.
1 Week Later
Kelly, Scott, Andy, Matt, Hallie, Heather, and Angie had all flown back to Chicago without Shelby. Her parents did stop by to get her things but wouldn't talk to anyone.
Kelly had been so distracted since they got back he wasn't even paying attention in classes. He hadn't seen Shelby since that day in the hospital. She wouldn't answer his phone calls or his texts.
After School that day he drove by Shelby's place and unlike every other day he drove by her car was gone. Kelly pulled into the driveway and walked up to the door.
He rang the doorbell but no one answered. Kelly peaked into one of the windows and his heart dropped. The house was empty.
Kelly headed back to his car and tried calling Shelby but it went to voicemail.
"Shelby please call me back. I need to know you are okay. I love you." Kelly hung up the phone and headed home.
He walked into the kitchen and his dad was making dinner. "Hey Kelly."
"Hey dad." Kelly had avoided asking his dad about Mr. Jensen. But now he needed to know. "Is Mr. Jensen still working for the CFD?"
Benny stopped what he was doing and turned to face his son. "He resigned two days ago."
"What? Why?" Kelly knew Shelby's dad was upset about the whole thing but he didn't think it would come to this.
"Said he got an offer he couldn't refuse."
"Where?"
"Kelly I do not know. He wouldn't tell any of us. All he said was it was best for his family."
Kelly was getting ready to argue with his dad but his phone buzzed. Kelly quickly pulled out his phone and read the text.
"Meet me at the cabin in an hour."
It was from Shelby. "I'll be back." Kelly practically ran out of the house and jumped into his car. He headed straight for the cabin. He didn't care that he was speeding. He just had to get there.
When Kelly arrived no other cars were around so he sat in his car watching out his rearview mirror hoping to see her car pull up.
It felt like an eternity before he saw the headlights of Shelby's charger. Kelly quickly got out of his car while Shelby parked next to him.
She had barely gotten out of the car when Kelly embraced her in a hug and then kissed her. Something was different. Kelly felt it in the kiss they just shared.
"What's wrong babe?" Kelly had placed a hand on her cheek.
Shelby closed her eyes and rest her head against his hand. Fighting back the tears. "It's over Kelly."
Kelly's hand dropped and he took a step back. "What do you mean?"
"I'm breaking up with you."
Kelly felt like he had just had his heart ripped out. "But why?"
"Because I'm leaving Kelly. My dad took a new job." Shelby couldn't help but to start crying. She was trying so hard to contain her emotions.
"But I thought he was keeping you in Chicago?"
"Things have changed Kelly."
"All because of Miami? Because I got you pregnant?" Kelly took a step closer to Shelby and wiped her tears. "I love you Shelby. Please don't do this." Kelly could feel the tears stingy his eyes.
Shelby took a deep breath trying to calm her nerves. "But I don't love you Kelly." She hated doing this to him but she needed him to move on and forget about her.
Kelly felt as through after ripping his heart out she just stomped on it and crushed it. "What? I don't understand."
"What don't you understand Kelly!?!" She had tears rolling down her cheeks. "I don't love you Kelly! We are just teenagers. This is over."
"Shelby please?"
"Goodbye Kelly." Shelby turned around and got in her car.
Kelly ran over before she could close the door. "Shelby stop. Please."
Shelby was staring straight out the windshield of her car. "Kelly I can't. My parents are expecting me to be headed their way."
"Shelby."
"Kelly don't! I have to go." Kelly stood their shell shocked as Shelby closed her car door and drove off. He watched as her taillights disappeared into the night.
Shelby was watching out her rearview mirror as Kelly's figure got smaller and smaller as she drove away. Tears streaming down her face. This has been the hardest thing she has ever done.
She drove to Kansas City. Where her dad had taken a new position. She had managed to convince her parents to let her drive there. She wanted to at least say goodbye to Kelly.
The next chapter of her life was about to begin rather she wanted it too or not.
