Summer Lindell - District 9 Female - Age 18

"I'm in love with you!" Summer knocked on her friend Brooke's door one morning, "Brooke, I'm in love with you!"

Brooke opened the door to see Summer standing in skimpy pants and a cropped shirt.

"You're what?" Brooke said, but it was too late. Before Brooke could get out another word, Summer lunged at her and grabbed her, "Do you love me too?'

"Summer! I'm so confused!"

"I love you Brooke!" Summer began to kiss Brooke, much to her dismay.

"Summer! I'm straight."

Summer would have nothing of Brooke's protesting and she pinned her to the ground and began to touch her, "This is so fun!"

"Stop it!" Brooke cried out, "Get your hands off me, perv."

Poor Brooke was useless in the situation. Nothing she could say or do would prevent Summer from continuously touching her. She tried to scream but Summer covered her mouth. She tried to run away, but Summer's body prevented her from getting up. Before she knew it, Brooke was naked on her living room floor with nothing but a box of tissues to mourn the best friend she lost.

At least that's what Brooke said happened, but here's the truth.

"I'm nervous!" Summer spun in her long dress, "What if she says no?"

"You miss all the shots you don't take." Her friend Orion said, "And if she doesn't want to date you, that's her loss."

Brooke, Summer, and Orion had been friends for basically forever. They did nearly everything in tandem, and perhaps it was that closeness that led to Summer discovering not only that she was a lesbian, but that Brooke was the girl of her dreams. She was everything, sweet, charismatic, hilarious, and so pretty it all but burned Summer's eyes to stare at her, which she did whenever she was blessed with the chance.

"What if she hates me Orion?"

"Why would she hate you Summer? You're just being honest with her."

Summer picked up flowers from the ground as she walked over to Brooke's house. Pretty girls liked flowers, right? Summer certainly did and she knew Brooke would too. When they arrived at the house, Orion decided it would be best for him to walk a few houses away so that the whole ordeal wouldn't seem so invasive.

"Go get her Summer!" He said before walking away.

Summer knocked on the door three times before hearing a voice call "Who is it?"

"Brooke! It's Summer!"

Summer fiddled with her thumbs as she awaited Brooke's return, and she couldn't help but smile when she laid her eyes on her. Brooke looked as beautiful as ever with her loose-fitting jeans and green sweater which made her eyes sparkle.

"Hi Summer!" Brooke seemed excited to see her.

"Hey," Summer sighed, there was no going back now, "Can we talk about something?"

"Is everything okay?"

"Everything is fine."

Brooke led Summer to the table on her porch and sat down.

"So?" Brooke stared at Summer with those amazing green eyes of hers.

"I don't know how to phrase this so I'm just going to be honest. I have feelings for you. I know it's crazy and maybe unexpected but it's the truth. I understand if you don't feel the same, but I can't go another day without telling you."

Brooke paused for a moment. Summer couldn't discern if she was confused, if she reciprocated, or if she was just processing the information. All of those feelings would have been completely valid, but alas she chose anger:

"So you've been lying to me this whole time then?" Brooke screamed,

"No! Not at all."

"You said we were best friends."

"We are."

"But you have a crush on me?"

"I do. But you don't have to reciprocate"

"You're a fucking creep. I bet you stare at me when I change clothes. I can't believe I let you into my house. We had sleepovers. What the fuck?"

"I'm so sorry Brooke." Summer was on the verge of tears.

"Get out. Now."

Summer ran to Orion who was still across the street and started sobbing.

"So it didn't go well, I take it?"

"No shit!"

Summer told Orion about the screaming and the confusion and hurt. By the time she was finished, she was out of breath.

"What do you think will happen next?" Orion asked.

"I have no idea." Summer said, "I just hope she doesn't tell anybody."

Brooke told everybody. She made up the previously stated ridiculous lie which painted Summer as a monster. Her life became a nightmare.

"Orion?" She asked her friend two years later, the only one who had supported her through all of this, "Do you think she'll try to get people to vote for me?"

"Fuck." Orion groaned, "I hadn't thought of that."

Summer was terrified. She could take being alienated at school, but she never thought it would lead to her entering a death match, but then again, nobody does.

"She couldn't possibly be that nasty right?"

Wrong.

As Summer walked through the hallways at school the day before the reapings, she heard whisperings about how people were excited to "watch the dyke die," and it took everything in her to not break down, but she knew doing so would only make matters worse.

"Rough day I take it?" Summer's mom said when she walked into the house that day.

"Yeah." Summer sighed.

"Is it Brooke again?" Her little brother Rowan asked, "I hate that bitch."

"She wants to vote me into the Hunger Games."

"What?!" Summer's mother exclaimed, "Over the incident that happened all those years ago?"

"Of course."

"Well I hate her too then." Her mom said, "But Rowan, please don't use that word."

"Sorry mom."

The Lindell's had been very supportive of Summer's sexuality. Shockingly, Rowan was the most supportive because apparently it was cool that they both liked girls, though he liked to rub in Summer's face that he had a girlfriend before her.

"What are you going to do?" Summer's mom asked.

"What can I do?"

"Win. To prove you're better than her."

"I guess. But I doubt that will happen."

"Never say never."

The only positive to this situation was that Summer knew exactly who to vote for when she went to the polling station. She didn't have to think twice before she wrote "Brooke Omri" for the female spot, and "Tyler Shields," her equally obnoxious boyfriend for the male. Ultimately, she was sure her vote would mean nothing, but she was still proud of the little moment of rebellion she just had.

Isaac Galvan - District 9 Male - Age 14

"So you think you're better than me because you have two parents or something?" Isaac yelled at this stupid punk named Garth in the hallway at school, "Well fuck you!"

"What did I do wrong Isaac?" He asked. Please, he knew exactly what he did.

"Why are you so mad I did my family heritage project about my mom?"

"Because you know my mom died. And you did it to piss me off, you little bitch boy."

"I'm sorry if you were hurt by it, but I had no intention to upset you."

"Please."

Isaac rammed his fist in Garth's face. It felt good when he heard Garth cry out that he was in pain.

"That hurt."

"Good."

Isaac kicked Garth in the stomach. Maybe now he would learn his lesson and not mess with him.

"I'm telling the principal on you." Garth cried. What a stupid teacher's pet.

Somehow the incident led to Isaac being expelled. He didn't see why. Garth pissed him off and Isaac defended himself.

"So I heard you were expelled today." Isaac's dad said when he got home, "Why did that happen?"

"This stupid bitch named Garth made fun of me for not having a mom so I knocked some sense into him."

"Did you hurt him?"

"Well he asked for it."

"I'm sorry that happened son." Isaac's dad sighed, "I understand it was a misunderstanding."

Sometimes Isaac thought his dad was the only rational person. After his mom died in a fire, and his sister Zippeena died in the Hunger Games, his father was all that he had.

"Dad!" Isaac whined, "Do you think this will make me get reaped?"

"I hope not." His dad said

Isaac didn't care if he got reaped because he'd whip everybody's asses in the arena and he would get so many sponsors too because he's such a great person. He decided to wear his father's tie to the reaping because he wanted the memory of the only sensible person he knew to be with him in the arena.

Obviously, he voted for Garth, and for the girl he wrote the name of this girl named Summer because he had heard that she was a lesbian. Ew. He also had heard that she harassed and assaulted people and Isaac just didn't understand why anybody would even think of doing that. He bonked Garth in the head as he took his seat for what would be the start of Isaac's big victory.

Androcles Anderson - District 9 Mentor

Much like the other Capitolite mentors, Androcles was sick and tired of being a mentor. Unlike the rest of them however, he at least had fun getting to know the kids, and was almost sad when they died. This year he could tell would be tough however. Summer seemed cool enough, but Isaac was going to be a mess and a half.

"I've never met him and I hate him already," The District 9 Escort, Ulyssa said as the two walked to the train station. Isaac had yelled that he was ready to "fuck the bitches then win" when his name was called, and that was all Androcles needed to know in order to decide he would strongly dislike him.

"Hopefully he dies in the bloodbath."

"Are you really wishing death on a 14-year-old Androcles?"

"Can you blame me?"

"Oh lord no."

At least Androcles could understand why Isaac was voted in. He wouldn't be shocked if he found out the vote was unanimous, but Summer he genuinely felt bad for. She seemed like such a sweet girl, and not at all deserving of being sentenced to a probable death.

"Maybe he'll at least be entertaining?" Androcles tried to find a positive.

"Sure. We can play a drinking game." Ulyssa laughed as the two boarded the train.

Summer Lindell - District 8 Female

"I'm going to miss you guys." Summer said as she stood by her family in the train station. It was all she could say.

"I know." Her father said, "And of course we will miss you too. We are already so excited for you to come home to us."

"What if that doesn't happen?"

"Then we will be devastated." Her mother said, "But we can't give up hope now."

"Fair." Summer sighed. It was all catching up to her now and she was more scared than ever before. She really could not wrap her head around the fact that she was going to probably die and all because she told a cute girl how she felt. She was about to get on the train when her father stopped her.

"I have to give you something."

He pulled out a portrait of the Lindell family and handed it to Summer. A single teardrop fell onto the paper as the doors to the train slid shut.

Isaac Galvan - District 9 Male

"Don't be worried Dad!" Isaac said, "I'm totally going to win."

"I don't want to be all alone."

"Well like I just said, you won't be."

"Do you think you can win this?"

"Duh."

Isaac couldn't take his father's negativity anymore:

"I'm leaving."

His father gave him a hug, "Take care."
