"Jack?"
"Mmm", her husband of one day muttered. They were still in bed, figuring that this was their honeymoon – although Jack had gotten up early to feed the animals. But he'd come back to bed and they'd had another round of passion before falling back asleep.
"Jack!"
"What?" he mumbled, reaching out and pulling her to him, although his eyes were still closed. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing. Nothing's wrong. It's just – I remembered something."
He sighed and opened one eye. "What did you remember? I fed the animals and everything is secure around the property."
"No, I don't mean about here – it's about – before."
"Before?" This time his other eye opened and he scooted up a bit. "You mean before Thassos?"
"I mean – at the Ancient site."
He frowned at that, and blinked a couple of times. He then pushed himself up to a seated position, leaning back on the headboard. "You remembered something? Something important?"
"Well", she looked a bit embarrassed, sitting up herself. "I don't know if it's important exactly -"
"But?"
"Well – after last night -"
His grin stopped her. "Last night? You mean the incredible sex?"
"Yes", she laughed. "The incredible sex. It was, you know", she said softly, getting side-tracked from her original conversation
"I know." He leaned down and kissed her. "You were incredible. I love you."
"I know you do – and the feeling is mutual. But Jack, didn't last night remind you of something?"
He frowned again. "Remind me? Of what? I mean – it's not like we've -" he waggled his finger between the two of them, "before."
"But that's exactly what I mean. Look, when we were in that room – I uh – fantasized about us – you know."
"You did?" he grinned. He flinched back when she swatted him, but grinned even harder. "Okay – so did I. But I don't get what that's supposed to mean. It showed that we had feelings for each other even then, but doesn't have much to do with last night."
"But it does", she said. "Because my fantasy was exactly like last night."
"Exactly?" he raised his brows. "Really?"
"Well, not exactly, exactly – but the uh – technique was the same."
"Technique Carter?"
"Yes Jack – technique, your technique."
"I have a technique?" he said proudly.
She swatted him again. "Get serious. I mean – how could I possibly know that you would – that you liked – hell, that you were like that during sex with me. I mean, I imagined it but it was only imagination. I had no way of knowing what sex with you would really be like."
This time he stopped kidding around and listened to what she was saying. It made him think back to those same fantasies – or what he thought had been fantasies – at the Ancient sight. It suddenly dawned on him that what she was saying was true. In fact, he realized that some of last night had been based on her reactions to things during those fantasies. He hadn't really known that she liked to be kissed right in that spot on her neck, and yet he had known. He had also known just how much pressure and speed to use as he was – holy crap!
"What are you saying?" he turned to her in confusion. "That we somehow knew?"
"I – maybe. Either that or it wasn't really a fantasy."
He stared at her, not quite sure what she was saying. As she did nothing but stare back he had to take a deep breath and try and figure – "you're saying it was real?"
"Maybe", she shrugged. "I don't know."
"I – but why?"
"I don't know that either, although there was something about the dream that – even at the time – seemed real to me."
"You mean skinny dipping in a jungle pool and then making love with me? That felt real."
"Mmm. It was a nice pool."
"That it was."
"And skinny dipping was great. I loved looking at you naked."
"Same here. I mean, I loved looking at you naked. But Sam – it couldn't have been real. We woke up in that room, remember? And we were fully dressed."
"True", she sighed. "I guess we won't know for sure, but – it was strange. And it did feel so real at the time."
"Yes it did but – but I think, I know this is real, so let's just enjoy it, and each other."
She smiled and agreed and opened her arms. He was right that it probably had been a dream, although there was something else that was bothering her –she wasn't positive yet and wasn't going to mention it to Jack, not yet, not until she was sure.
Life settled into a pattern in their little village after their short honeymoon. Jack laughed when he thought of what his life had become. Never in a million years would he have pictured himself as a farmer – with a small flock of sheep (already growing, he was pleased to say), chickens, a garden and a small orchard. They had to work hard to maintain everything but with a supportive community and with the abundance that surrounded them, it was not impossible.
After a few weeks Jack had realized, though, that he needed to think of something else to do. It wasn't that he hated the sheep, but what they had wasn't really enough to live on, at least not for anything more than the very short term. It was actually Sam – his wife (he grinned when he thought that) who had come up with the solution.
"Why don't you try your hand at pottery", she'd told him. "I know you can do it and there's no one here who produces it. The locals have to go into the market in the city to purchase pots and dishes. I'm sure there'd be a market for it."
He'd hummed and hawed, not sure if his skills were up to it. In the end Sam had gone ahead and created a wheel for him –which gave her something interesting to do – and had insisted he try.
He'd spent a day searching out a source for clay and when he'd found it, had decided to try his hand at it. It had taken a couple of days before the skill came back, but eventually he'd managed to produce something that at least resembled a pot. It wasn't sales worthy, not yet, but he figured with more practice he could produce pots and containers that were functional, if not beautiful.
Eventually he got to where he could make a variety of pots that actually looked pretty good. Sam told him there were at least as good as many the locals used. He figured she was saying that just to be nice, but when he'd investigated he found out she was right. The only problem now was how to fire them!
Again it was Sam who came up with the solution. She showed him the bread ovens that the locals used and figured that she could modify the design to increase the heat and use it for his pots. It took her a few days, but eventually he put some of his dried pottery in and – voila – he had some real, live pots.
They let the locals know he had some to sell and he was surprised at how quickly his first dozen went. He thought it was because their neighbors were trying to be supportive, but after a while realized that it was a real help to them to have a local source. Since they used pottery for practically everything – from serving to storing to cooking – there was a huge need. Soon he was working almost non-stop throwing pots and selling them.
His workmanship got better and better each day, and soon he tried doing some decorating and painting. He found that fun, and was able to sell that pottery for a higher price. Rather than being used for practical purposes, people began to buy it for their good dishes, for decoration and for gifts.
"You're becoming famous", Sam told him one night at dinner. "I heard that your pots are in demand and that people are coming from other villages"
"Really?" Jack's eyebrows went up. "I didn't think I was that good."
"Well, you are. Some of the women were saying you should speak to some of the traders and try and sell more of your pots to them. You could even set up a stall at the market and make some extra money."
Jack sighed and looked down at his roughened hands. He did enjoy the work, although didn't know if it was something he wanted to do for the rest of his life. He was enjoying life on Thassos, but knew that they'd have to eventually go back and check what was happening on Earth. He was sure that Daniel, Teal'c and their other friends and family were probably worried sick about them.
"Maybe I will but Sam, I think it's time we took a trip to the gate first."
"I know", she sighed. She had been thinking about it more and more over the last few days. They had to find out what was going on before too much longer. The other fact was she wouldn't be up to traveling large distances after the next couple of months. She opened her mouth, thinking now was the time to tell him, but his next words stopped her.
"How do you feel about leaving at the end of the week? I could ask Alex to look after our place while we're gone. It should only take a few days."
"And what happens if we find out we can go home?" Sam asked quietly.
Jack looked at her for a moment and then shrugged. "Probably won't happen", he said, "but if it does – we'll come back and say goodbye and then head out." He looked around their small home. "I'll miss this place."
"Me too", she smiled, "although I admit I miss running water. I'd love a long hot soak in a tub – one where I didn't have to heat the water in a pot first."
"Yeah", he smiled. "And I miss hockey and my truck."
"And our friends" Sam said softly.
"Yeah, especially them."
On that note they both agreed it was time to return to the gate and figure out what was going on in the galaxy without them.
"Do you think they're okay?" Daniel asked. Teal'c was eating lunch in the commissary and Daniel had come by and sat at the table, the permanent frown which seemed to have taken residence on his face in clear view.
"You have asked me that many times, Daniel Jackson. I believe they are fine."
"But where are they?"
"I do not know. You know they could not tell us – this way we cannot tell the NID or anyone from Washington where they are."
"No, except they don't believe us anyway."
Teal'c shrugged. "That is their problem."
"And you know that they've sent spies to the SGC to try and find out?" As he said this he looked over at the table where three of the new members of the SGC were sitting, having coffee together.
Although there was no proof, both Daniel and Teal'c – and even Janet Frasier, were convinced that they were plants by the NID put here to ferret out information. Two of the newbies were on away teams and one was a nurse in the Infirmary. While they all seemed nice enough, the word had somehow gotten around that they could be plants so everyone was pretty careful not to say anything around them.
"But what if they're not?" Daniel suddenly asked.
"What if they are not spies?" Teal'c replied, taking a bite of banana.
"Yeah. What if they're really with the Air Force? I'll feel badly for treating them so suspiciously."
"I do not believe we are incorrect", Teal'c answered. "I have observed them and they are trying to collect information. Colonel Reynolds agrees."
"Really? Wow. We should do something."
"What can we do? There is no proof."
"Well, I don't mean about getting rid of them, but what about giving them misinformation?"
"Mis -?"
"Misinformation. It's often used in counterintelligence", he said softly. "We pretend that we don't know they're spies and we let certain pieces of information escape about Jack and Sam."
"Would not that be a mistake? We do not want them to know anything."
"But we wouldn't give them real information. We'd give them false information – misinformation."
"I see", Teal'c nodded. "Yes, that sounds like a good idea. How do we go about it?"
"Well, I think the first thing we need to do is agree on some false facts. Then we can let a few of them float around and see if our spies pick up on them. If they do, we'll know that they were spies."
"It sounds like a good plan. Who should we inform?"
"Let's talk to Hammond to begin with and let him decide."
So, with that plan they approached the General, asking to speak with him in his office.
"What is it that I can do for you gentlemen?" he asked the two men.
"Just wondering if there's been any news Sir?" he asked casually. At the same time he pushed over a piece of paper.
Hammond took it with a surprised look. "Uh – I haven't heard anything Dr. Jackson." He opened the paper and quickly read it.
Could your office be bugged? We have something important to talk to you about."
The General nodded. "It's safe. Siler checks it twice daily and has anti-bugging devices set up. I doubt very much that anything could get by Siler. Now, what is this about?"
Daniel proceeded to tell the General his idea. Hammond listened, nodding once or twice. "What misinformation should we give them?"
"Maybe that they were spotted living on a particular planet. We could then see if the NID decide to check it out. If they do we'll know they have spies here."
"And do you have any suggestions?"
"Mmm – we were thinking about P5K GT6." When the General continued to look blank it was Teal'c who explained.
"It was the planet where we returned with the stomach virus."
"You're not telling me – that planet? But we took it off our rotation because of the virus."
"I know", Daniel grinned. "I just thought, if there's anyone who deserves a little vomiting and diarrhea it's the NID."
George laughed at that and sat back in his chair. "Okay, but won't they be suspicious if we send them there?"
"We'll ask Walter to remove that part from the records. It's not deadly – it'll only be a few days of sickness and then it wears off. But they deserve a bit of payback."
"There's that. Okay, I'll get Walter on it. I also think he's the one to spread the information. He can do it in a way that won't be suspicious."
"Sounds like a good plan Sir", Daniel grinned. "Uh, but still no word on Jack or Sam?"
"No", Hammond sighed and rubbed his bald head. "Nothing. After the planet with the tribe that was fighting they lost any evidence of the Colonel or Major and Thor isn't trying too hard to find them."
"But why not?" Daniel growled. "He's supposed to be their friend!"
"That's exactly why Dr. Jackson. He's been ordered, by the High Council, to report to Earth if and when he finds them. For that reason he doesn't want to find them. He figures they're safe somewhere. Look, I'm sure they'll contact us somehow. You know them – they're both resourceful."
"And O'Neill has the knowledge of the Ancients which will protect him."
"Of kill him", Daniel muttered.
At that the two men left the General's office to wait and see if anything would come from their plan.
It was only a few days later and Daniel was working in his office when his phone buzzed. In a few seconds he was on his way to the General's office. He met Teal'c in the hallway.
"Do you know what this is about?" he asked.
"I do not. I was simply told to report to General Hammond's office."
The two men entered, to find Colonel Hubbard sitting in front of the General's desk, a smug look on his face.
"What's he doing here?" Daniel asked. "I thought we had air filters to keep out poisonous gasses!"
"Dr. Jackson" Hammond warned, although Daniel was pretty sure there was a note of humor in his voice. "The – Colonel – is going through the Gate. He has received special permission from the President to take a team with him."
"And he wants us?"
"No Dr. Jackson, you would be the last person I would ask to accompany me. I would be – nervous – about having an off-world accident."
"You are not then as foolish as you seem", Teal'c told him seriously. "May I ask General why we are here?"
"He asked for information about -" the General looked down at his desk. "About P5K GT6. That is the designation of the planet he is visiting. When I looked it up I discovered it was a planet that had been visited by Sg1. What can you tell the Colonel about it?"
Daniel frowned, tapping his lip with his finger. "Uh P5K GR6?"
"No, P5K GT6", Hubbard snapped. "Come on Doctor. Don't play around with me. What do you know about the planet?"
"I'm trying to remember. Teal'c, do you remember this one?"
"It is difficult. We visit numerous planets Colonel. Could this have been the one with the topless natives? I believe that O'Neill renamed it "The Mansion Planet". I do not know why he did that."
"It was because of the Playboy Mansion Teal'c. It's where-"
"Enough! You think you are funny but I'm warning you, if you do not cooperate I'll -"
"You'll what Colonel?" Hammond asked softly. "I invited these men here out of courtesy, but they are under no obligation to give you any information. You have the report – that should be enough for you. Now, if you'll collect your team you may prepare to leave."
"You'll be sorry for this General. Soon your reign as leader of the SGC will come to an end and then I'll make sure we have people here who know what to do what they're told."
"Just like all the slaves of the Goa'uld", Daniel commented. "General? If that's all?"
"It is Dr. Jackson, Teal'c. Thank you for coming and I'm sorry to have interrupted your work." He watched as the two members of Sg1 left his office and then turned back to Hubbard. "Walter will make sure your people get set up with what they need for an off-world visit. When you're ready to leave you are to inform me. You will be given 48 hours on the planet and then you will return. You are dismissed."
"I'm not -"
"I said you were dismissed Colonel. Or don't you know how to obey orders?"
Hubbard left fuming, determined that he was going to bring down Hammond and all his sycophants. Harriman was waiting for him and had him escorted to the VIP quarters.
"There will be a guard outside your door Sir", the Sergeant said respectfully. "Let him know if you need anything."
"I don't need a guard!"
"I'm sorry Sir – it's regulations. I'm afraid he'll have to escort you when you leave your quarters. And please let me know when you wish to go through the gate."
It was the next day before Hubbard was ready. He'd brought three marines with him – none of whom had gone through the gate before, but who looked tough enough for anything. Hubbard also requested someone from the SGC – who turned out to be one of the new officers, confirming in everyone's mind that he had been an NID plant.
"Just let us know when you're ready Sir", Walter spoke through the speaker to the men waiting in the gateroom below. He had to bite his lip to keep from grinning. They looked like they had enough supplies for a year – and that they were planning for a full-on battle, rather than simply trying to retrieve one errant officer.
"We're ready." Hubbard looked up, to see Hammond staring down at him. He gave the General a sloppy salute – the way he did it a definite insult. The General did not salute back.
A moment later Hubbard and his soldiers had headed through the gate to P5K GT6.
It was only minutes after that that Daniel and Teal'c showed up in the Control Room. "So, they gone?"
"Yes", Hammond nodded, still looking down at the gate.
"And they went to P5K GT6?"
"They did."
Daniel grinned and turned to look at the gate. As it was he missed the slight smile on Hammond and Walter's faces. "We should warn Janet."
"Why Dr. Jackson?" Hammond asked. "It is a safe planet, is it not?"
"Oh yeah – totally safe. Not too comfortable, but definitely safe."
"Well then, I guess we'd better all get back to work." The General turned sharply and headed back to his office. He was soon followed by Teal'c and Daniel, who also returned to what they had been doing before Hubbard arrived.
Walter was left alone in the Control Room, a big grin on his face.
