The sun was still shining when they arrived at the terminal. Jane stepped out of the car and leaned against it, keeping an eye on the constant crowd leaving the building. Amanda was leaning next to her and both had their arms crossed in front of their chest.
It had been an emotional and exhausting day. Jane tried not to push the girl too much and had the feeling that it worked well. They didn't know each other well, despite knowing things that were very private.
The only thing she could do was being there for Amanda. Maura and she had discussed the other night how to proceed and what they need to do. They had both concluded that being there for the girl was the only reasonable thing to do.
Amanda had opened up today, when Jane had taken her day off to drive her to her apartment to get her stuff. Right now, Maura was terribly busy. Not only had one of her ME's decided to quit the job, but she was also preparing for a conference in Las Vegas.
"I mean seriously Maur. You're the star guest at the conference. And we will be able to manage life without you. I mean, okay, it will be hard. But you shouldn't skip that. But Las Vegas? Really? Who holds a serious conference in Las Vegas?" Jane had sat on the bed, while Maura had finished her nightly routine.
Her arms had flown theatrically into the air and Maura had laughed. "I don't know Jane. But I think its safe to assume that this was Popov's idea."
Jane smirked when thinking of the small man who always had a bottle of vodka on him.
She was so deep in thought that she almost missed her mothers exit. The matriarch immediately smiled at the two of them who were almost as high as each other. Amanda began to fidget nervously with the hem of her jacket.
"Relax." Jane whispered before turning her head to her mother and walking into a hug. "Hey Ma! How was your flight?" she asked, and Angela complained about it being cold on the plane. But when her eyes fell on Amanda who felt suddenly very lonely and small, her smile grew even bigger.
Jane had told her what had happened after asking for Amanda's permission. It wasn't for the sensation but for the idea to make Angela understand what the girl had gone through, without her asking Amanda.
Amanda who trusted Jane and Maura now had agreed and was surprised when Angela pulled her into a long motherly hug. "Hello honey." Angela said and pulled her impossibly closer. To the point where Amanda thought she might suffocate.
Yet, this felt strangely good and she was almost deceived when the hug was over.
"So, you are Julia's girlfriend." Angela obviously couldn't help herself and Jane scoffed. "MA!" she exclaimed shooting Amanda an excusing look while shaking her head. To her surprise the girl recovered quickly from the shock and proudly said: "Yes. We have been together for three months now."
Jane had never counted or calculated but was surprised how fast the time had passed.
"That's good. I'm happy for you girls if you are happy."
"We are." Amanda smiled proudly. Jane could tell that her mother and Amanda already liked each other. She listened while they both chatted lightly until they were home. Frankie's car was already sitting in their driveway.
Her brother and his wife Nina and their kids were already hanging around when the rest of the family joined them. Angela greeted all of them with happiness.
"You're growing more and more grey hair." Jane teased her brother and Frankie replied smoothly "That's because I'm becoming wiser and wiser. Where is your gray hair Janie?"
"Ouch!" Julia exclaimed laughing. "Uncle Frankie is indicating that you are not getting…"
"I know what he is implying here, but I must protest. I'm still the older sibling and have the higher grade at work. And if he's not polite he will spend the coming week digitalizing files in the archive."
Angela watched Amanda follow the exchange in amazement and rolled her eyes. "That's enough. Don't act like teenagers in front of the real teenagers."
Amanda laughed out loud when Jane whined and almost stomped with her feet.
She began to warm up to this family. To every each of them with was special in his own way. At the beginning it had all been scary and overwhelming but when she realized that they were all kind and maybe a bit crazy her heart warmed up fast. She was going to fit in perfectly with her own quirks.
"So, this is Amanda? Nice to meet you." Frankie turned to her and she smiled at him. "Welcome to the Rizzoli Clan!" he stated. A black woman nudged her gently and grinned. "Don't worry. At the beginning I was scared, but I never regretted marrying Frankie. They are all sweet." She winked and introduced herself as Nina. Then Amanda met their kids who were playing with Will on the carpet.
"Get used to it." Jane whispered in a conspirative voice once they had a moment. "Rizzoli family dinners are like this. Just go with the flow." Amanda couldn't help and quickly hug her. "Thank you." She whispered and Jane tried to hide the tears in her eyes. "You're welcome. Thanks for taking up with us." She cleared her throat and turned to walk to have more banter with her brother.
R&I
Angela stayed a few days. As none of her kids had a free room, she stayed at the hotel. After signing the papers and meeting up with John she flew home to get her own house ready for the girls and Wills visit over the holidays.
Maura had gone to Las Vegas and returned with a somewhat strange look on her face. But Jane waited patiently until the kids had padded off and left them alone in the living room until she asked Maura about it.
"I want to move back to Boston. The chief ME is going to retire by the beginning of this summer." The doc stated flatly while gauging Janes reaction. "Boston hmmm?" Jane mumbled with a pensive expression on her face.
"Home Jane. I want us to go home." Maura took her hand and gently stroke the back of it with a thumb. The brunette cocked her head while looking at her.
Strangely the words home and Boston resonated in a good way in her head. But then she thought about Frankie and her face faltered. And what about her job? "I don't know Maur." She slowly replied.
"Just think about it. If you or the kids refuse, we can also stay here."
Jane nodded. But for the rest of the movie her mind was set on Maura's wish.
