Day 4: Haybot

Anyone who has played Conker's Bad Fur Day knows how much it thrives on pop culture humor. Most of this humor can be found in this game's boss fights.

The Great Mighty Poo drags down the sweet corn just like the shark from Jaws and his final lines before he dies are very similar to the Wicked Witch of the West.

The Little Girl from the 'It's War' Chapter spins her head around like Reagan from The Exorcist.

Count Batula is literally Bram Stoker's Dracula.

And the final boss, Heinrich, is literally a Xenomorph from Alien.

But neither of these guys are this game's first boss. So that begs the question, what movie did this first boss parody? That's an easy answer:

The Terminator.

Haybot: Buff you, asshole!

After saving Franky the Pitchfork, Conker joins forces with him in order to take out the Haybot, who is still in his haystack form. In the first phase, you simply run around the barn on Franky's back and try to ram into the Haybot to weaken it. But you've got to be quick as the Haybot can hit you with its big hands and knock Conker off of Franky. Your best strategy is to try and attack him from the back. Hit him three times and you move on to the second phase.

One thing I like about the first phase is how the Haybot gradually shows his true colors. After the first hit, he catches on fire...somehow (is he short circuting or something?). After the second hit, some of his robot body begins to show, revealing a red eye very similar to the Terminator's, and we get that 'Buff you, asshole,' line I mentioned earlier. And once the second phase begins, which takes place in some sewer area beneath the farm, the Haybot fully reveals his true form: A metallic monstrosity in the shape of a haystack armed to the teeth with missiles. And after another reference, this time to the Terminator's Uzi 9mm...

Haybot: Suzie 9mm.

(Missiles come out from the Haybot's shoulders)

Missile: I'm right here, sweetie pie. Just tell me where to shoot.

...The second phase begins.

In this phase, you pretty much need Franky to move around as the fall caused Conker to temporarily break his leg and moving without him will hinder your speed greatly.

Another thing I like about this phase is how much this phase's music is in stark contrast to the first phase's music. The first phase had some goofy and upbeat music that would find itself at home in Banjo-Kazooie (Not surprising since both Banjo-Kazooie and Conker were made by Rare). But in this phase, the music is somber and foreboding, and even sounds like the Terminator main theme at some points...but isn't because, you know, copyright.

Now onto the second phase itself. You need to lure one of the Haybot's missiles into one of the pipes surrounding the arena. Doing so will break it and cause it to spew water, which you need to lure the Haybot into so it'll short circuit and be stunned for a while. After that, that's your chance to attack its 'totally not obvious' weak point on its back, causing the Haybot to lose one of its arms. Repeat the process three times and the fight is over.

But off topic, seriously Rare, a big red 'Do Not Push' button, do you think we're idiots? Well, at least I didn't develop Kinect Sports! Yeah, who's the real idiot now?

(Lyra appears again)

Lyra: Dude, are seriously arguing with a game company who probably doesn't give a single shade of a damn about you?

Me: Leave me alone okay, I'm just having some fun!

(Let's wrap this up)

This fight might not have a lot going for it difficulty-wise, but it's still a fun fight. That and the Terminator references are just as hilarious and well-used as every other reference in the game.

Hasta La Vista, Haybot.
