Day 14: Gohma (Wind Waker)
(Skit time!)
Me: Okay, who's next?
(I look at a list and see the boss I'll be talking about on Day 14: Gohma. My thumb is covering something next to the word 'Gohma' so that word is all I see)
Me: Gohma? That pathetic first boss from Ocarina of Time? Come on, man, I thought I'd be done talking about these pathetically easy first bosses. Do I really have to talk about this joker!
(Lyra comes in)
Lyra: Hey, WildCard, what's wrong?
Me: I have to talk about Gohma from Ocarina of Time and I'm not looking forward to it. Here, look.
(I hand Lyra the list and she takes a closer look at it)
Lyra: Uh, you might want to read again. Says here the next boss is Gohma, but specifically from Wind Waker.
(I take the list back from Lyra and see that I misread it)
Me: Well what do you know, it is the Wind Waker version. My thumb must've covered that part up. But I don't know what difference this game will make. I mean, it's still Gohma. I'm sure the fight is still pathetically easy and does nothing to build upon the Ocarina of Time version of the fight.
(Insert Gohma from Wind Waker's cutscene here)
Me: Okay, that is fucking awesome!
Lyra: You can say that again
(Now onto the fight itself)
Now this is a first boss. I don't know what went down at Nintendo that made them decide to turn Gohma into a fire breathing behemoth of an insectoid, but I applaud them for making this decision. Gohma looks absolutely amazing and the music accompanying the fight is epic.
As Gohma is trying to slash away at you with its monster truck sized pincers, you need to use your Grappling Hook on Valoo's tail and swing to one of the platforms above the arena. Upon doing so, a piece of rock from above will fall from the ceiling and crack its exoskeleton. After that, Gohma will bring the rock back up to the ceiling and the fight continues.
You need to swing onto Valoo's tail and bring down the rock piece two more times to completely break Gohma's exoskeleton off. But you need to be careful as Gohma can also trap you with its pincers and breath a difficult to avoid fire attack at you.
Once Gohma's exoskeleton is completely gone, the second phase of the fight begins.
Without the exoskeleton, Gohma move much quicker, and you need to hit its eye to deal damage. You can do that by throwing your Grappling Hook at it, or wait until Gohma traps you again with its pincers, giving you time to slash away at its eye with your sword.
After dealing enough damage to Gohma's eye, the fight is over.
The fight against Gohma in Wind Waker is easily the best and most creative Gohma fight in the series. Never before have you had to break the boss' exoskeleton before you go all Leroy Jenkins on the eye.
In conclusion, Wind Waker Gohma has the looks, music, and battle of a fantastic first boss, nothing more to say beyond that.
