Day 28: Flowery Woods

Whispy Woods has pretty much become an iconic boss fight in the Kirby series. Nine times out of ten, if a new Kirby game comes out, expect this thing to show up. Most of the fights against Whispy Woods boil down to the same thing: Beat it up long enough while it drops down its apple or spits out little things of air. Occasionally Nintendo will try something different with him like in Kirby's Dreamland 3 or Kirby 64. But starting with Kirby Triple Deluxe, Nintendo go really creative with the Whispy Woods fights.

Enter Flowery Woods...

Once a harmless flower turned behemoth flower tree by Taranza in an attempt to finish Kirby off, Flowery Woods will show you the true meaning of Flower Power.

Your goal in this fight is similar to any Whispy Woods fight: Dodge his attacks and beat him up until he's defeated. Speaking of his attacks, let's take a look at what Flowery Woods has up his...not...sleeves.

In the first phase, Flowery will spit out puff of air (as typical with the Woods family) and drop small blobs of pollen to hurt Kirby. So far this is your standard Whispy Woods fight, but then phase two happens...

Flowery Woods will jump into the background (Good job taking advantage of the 3DS capabilities) and start attacking you from there. He'll still shoot pollen balls and air blasts at you, but this time they're much bigger so they're a little harder to dodge. On top of that, Flowery Woods will try and stab you with his roots, jump back to the foreground in an attempt to crush Kirby, throw his flowers like boomerangs, and even attempt to use his roots to push you before summoning two giant roots to crush you.

Damn, why can't all Whispy Wood fights have a move roster as vast and diverse as Flowery Woods?

After dealing enough damage, though, Flowery Woods will be defeated.

Overall, this is a nice spin on the usual Whispy Woods formula, and things will only get better when we get to Kirby: Planet Robobot, but that's for later.

Whether you beat this thing up with Beam, Fire, Beetle, Cutter, or just vanilla Kirby it the whole way through, Flower Woods is a great boss fight to start off a great game.
