AN: By the way, the food mentioned in this chapter is from Australia as I see Menagerie as being the Remnant equivalent of said country. Lamington is a real thing and actually looks pretty tasty. The witchetty grub is also apparently a real Australian food but I don't think I'd eat that one, bugs aren't really part of my diet.
AN2: Also, yes, Weiss doesn't act exactly as she did in the beginning of RWBY, but I still feel her behavior is reasonably within character given what we find out her motivations and past are.
Second Coming of the Reaper
Chapter 8
-Jaune-
Stretching with a grunt, Jaune got out of his bed his teammates doing the same as they got ready for the day and the initiation tests, they'd have to do later on. "So, what do you lot plan to do before the fights?" he asked as he started putting on the clothes he'd been gifted by Junior, the only parts of his huntsman outfit added being his weapons and the mask he kept attached to his belt.
"I'm taking Mel to the armory to make sure her new guns are in good shape." Amber told him with a grin, "I might as well give my staff a good tune up as well."
"I intend to observe those intending to join Beacon." Adam's dead eye burned angrily at whatever thoughts flew through his head.
"Alright, as team leader I have some orders." Amber shook her head as she poked Jaune in the chest, "Jaune, you go with him to make sure he doesn't confront that Belladonna girl. She'll find out about him being here eventually but let's at least try to hold off on that till the fighting." Spinning on her heel, she then proceeded to poke Adam, "And you make sure Jaune doesn't do anything stupid like try to fight his sister."
"Oi!" Jaune gave her an annoyed look at the insinuation.
"Having the boys babysit each other?" Melanie raised an eyebrow as she slipped on her bladed weapons, having adopted her sister's wrist blades into her own arsenal, "Are you sure they can handle that?" giving the giggling girls the finger in response, Jaune finished getting on his gear before looking at Adam who was also wearing his new outfit from Junior's, new blood red katana and all.
"Come on." Adam growled as he stalked from the room, the faunus still as prickly as ever or, as Amber liked to put it, 'new to the whole friendship thing'. Nodding to the girls, Jaune followed silently behind his teammate, figuring calling him a 'friend' was a bit too soon. He was well aware that Adam was only here for Amber's promised aide and resources in ways to help the Faunus by getting Adam a huntsman license. Sure, he felt Adam had at least a decent amount of respect for him, and they could definitely work together, but friendship wasn't there yet.
"How likely is this Belladonna chick to attack you on sight?" Jaune asked as they walked down to the courtyard where the bullheads would be bringing the other student hopefuls, enjoying the more 'high class' feel his new clothes gave him, especially with the added side effect of getting to see Melanie's mental Whiplash the first time she saw his actual huntsman outfit in comparison.
"I'd say roughly twenty percent chance." Adam considered, "Ten Percent is trying to ignore me in the hopes that I didn't notice her so she can report me to Ozpin or something. The last seventy percent is her just running away, sneaking onto a bullhead, and trying to start a new life in Mistral."
"I…honestly can't tell if you're joking." Jaune frowned as they passed the statue of his great-great-grandfather, Crocea Mors held aloft dramatically.
"I'm not. And what about your sister? You mentioned how most of your family are scum upon Remnant." Adam leaned against a tree once they were close enough to see the landing pad and the approaching ships.
"Yeah, some were tolerable, and others were great." Jaune nodded, "My sister Saffron left home the second she was of age, our parents not really being okay with the whole 'lesbian' thing, let alone her not wanting to be a huntress. When she left, I went with her. Gramps was pretty cool too, but he died when I was a kid. As for Joan, she wasn't as much of a bitch as, say, Astrid, but she was also more than happy to go along with our parent's opinions and beliefs. She was the little prodigy and didn't have time to bother with me for the most part. She could ignore me completely or keep up trying to get me to quit being a huntsman and go be a little baby maker back home and neither would surprise me."
"Your family is full of imbeciles." Adam scoffed, "And people have the gall to call the Faunus backwards Savages?"
"I'm well aware that people are stupid." Jaune shook his head as the ships landed, "Oh by the way, my buddy back home I mentioned, Tony, his Uncle own a Menagerie style Barbeque place here in vale. Wanna grab the girls and hit it up after the tests?"
"Menagerie style Barbeque?" Adam raised a cautious eyebrow.
"Look, I've tried his families cooking. The Lamington alone is worth going." Jaune rubbed his stomach at the memory of said dessert.
"You're buying." Adam commands seriously but Jaune could see the desire for that taste of home.
"Deal, so long as you help me trick the girls into eating some Witchetty Grubs." Jaune grinned as even Adam's mouth twitched in amusement at the notion. Glancing over his teammate's shoulder, Jaune looked a bit more serious, "Hey, there's that Yang person the Malachites mentioned." He nodded to the tall blonde girl who was quickly gathering what looked like a group of friends before they all rushed off, the sudden action sending a smaller girl in a hood stumbling into a pile of luggage. Given the sudden dust explosion it was quite clear what said luggage contained.
"Shit, you guys okay?" Jaune hurried over, hearing Adam behind him as he approached the girl who got knocked into the luggage as well as said container's owners.
"Ow." The girl in the hood groaned, Jaune noticing she looked younger than the others here now that he got closer, the girl in all white helping her up, sending a glare at the still running group that had knocked the smaller hooded one into the dust containers.
"That's not really an answer." Adam commented, the man's smart ass showing in full force as the girls looked over at them. The one in the hood looked about to make a cheerful comment before her eyes widened at seeing Adam's scar. The girl in all white, sporting a face scar of her own, paled and looked horrified far beyond what one would expect just seeing the scar.
"What's the matter Schnee, do I have something on my face?" Adam scoffed, the not dead eye narrowing as he stared down at the horrified girl, "Or is the scar bothering you? Are you upset that you can't see all the letters clearly?"
"Who did that?" the girl, apparently the Schnee heiress, whispered out in horror and, if Jaune heard right, restrained fury.
Adam heard the question too, but it was clearly one he hadn't expected, "Why, planning on giving him a nice little pat on the back?"
"I'd prefer putting my boot to his teeth." Weiss snarled, her horror still there but righteous anger starting to overtake it, "Now I'll ask again, who did that?"
"…Willhuff Tarkin." Adam eventually stated, the ex-freedom fighter looking curious as the girl in white nodded, stepping away from her luggage as some of the school staff collected the undamaged crates to carry away. As the girl walked, she pulled out a scroll and began to type away, only pausing to look back, her hand reflexively flitting to her own scar.
"Just so you know, you aren't the only one who's face is scarred thanks to my father's choices." With that, the Schnee girl walked away to make a call.
"Um…hi?" hearing the awkward voice of the girl who'd gotten knocked over, Jaune and Adam looked back at her as she waved "Thanks for checking on me. I'm Ruby, Ruby Rose."
"Jaune Arc." Jaune nodded to her with a grin as Adam gave a small huff before providing his own name.
"Are those scythes?!" Ruby apparently noticed the weapons on Jaune's hips as she began flitting about him like a squirrel on caffeine, examining his weapons and chattering away a mile a minute about scythes and weapon specs, even whipping out her own scythe that was apparently also a high caliber sniper rifle.
"Uh, Adam, a little help here!" Jaune worked to get Ruby off his arm as she tried grabbing at one of his scythes to examine them. Upon failing to hear anything but muffled snickering he turned and saw Adam with his scroll out, "Are…are you filming this?" he saw a button get pushed "You better have not sent that to Amber!...Answer me mother fucker!"
"Language!" Ruby scolded, instantly getting off his arm as she held out a partially filled and clearly labelled 'swear jar'.
"Valean." Jaune snarked, pushing the jar aside with a finger as Ruby pouted angrily.
-Weis-
"Hello, welcome to the dispatch of Atlas national huntsmen and huntress personnel, how may I help you?" came the board voice of the operator on the other end of her Scroll call.
"Yes, I'd like to be connected to the Huntress Robyn Hill." Weiss spoke confidently, silently grateful that she chose an audio only call for contacting the receptionist, wanting to keep her father as far from her trail as she could.
"One moment." The bored dispatcher yawned, not even bothering to hide it, before the call transferred.
Finally, it came through as a new voice picked up "Hello, this is Joanna Greenleaf of the Happy Huntresses. You wanted to contact us for a job?"
"Yes, I have information for Miss Hill that I feel she will be able to use the most effectively thanks to her semblance. If you can bring her on, I can explain more and switch to a video call so you can see why this information is so important." Weiss felt how stiff her back was, but she couldn't help herself, she knew damn well what she was doing, as well as how her father would react if he found out, but she didn't care. If she wanted to restore her family company, and her family name, to what her grandfather had created then she couldn't do things half-way, couldn't afford to just give lip service to her beliefs.
"Alright kid, but if this is just some stupid prank call there'll be consequences." The other huntress warned before Weiss heard muffled shouting for Robin to come over, the sound of multiple footsteps approaching. Finally seeing the request for video call on her scroll, Weiss hit 'accept' as the screen lit up showing four huntresses who seemed very surprised to see her.
"Heiress Schnee." Robyn crossed her arms and stared expectantly "To what do I owe this 'pleasure'?"
"Miss Hill, I'm sure you've heard rumors and allegations about various SDC managers performing unwarranted and cruel actions towards those working at the mines, both those working as miners and the relatives of said employees?" Weiss ignored the woman's distaste for her name, quite used to that reaction from people thanks to her father. Whether it be from his habits, his attitude, or that stupid mustache, Jacques Schnee seemed to infuriate everyone he met.
"Yes, and there better be a good point to you bringing this up kid." Hill scowled, the subject likely a sore spot, especially given the obvious faunus in the group. The allegations had been made several times over the years but there were never any names brought forth or evidence as all witnesses seemed unable to be found and her father was extremely uncooperative with investigations.
"I've just arrived at Beacon for initiation tests. Another student here has an SDC brand across one of his eyes. Not only that, but he gave me the name of the man who did it. Willhuff Tarkin, he's a manager of the Frostsheer mines in eastern Atlas. I assume with your semblance, and your license allowing you to investigate criminal actions, you would be able to resolve this." Weiss admittedly enjoyed seeing the group's surprise.
"You're just throwing one of your dad's employees under the bullhead?" a blue haired huntress raised a questioning eyebrow.
"I am not my father." Weiss rebutted, eyes sharp as she stared down the four huntresses without flinching "I want my family name to be respected like it was in the days of my grandfather, respected for the right reasons."
"Miss Schnee, it would be my genuine pleasure." Robyn smirked dangerously as she cracked her knuckles "Your father won't be able to get back at you though, right?"
"He could technically try but I am the named heir to the company." Weiss shook her head, "Winter abdicated her position within the SDC and the only way it would go to Whitely was if I willingly renounced it or was arrested for some sort of serious crime. My father might try to claim I withdrew my position but if I made it clear that isn't the case, I should be fine…although your help proving him a liar should that come to pass would be greatly appreciated."
"You got spine kid." Robyn nodded with a chuckle, "And don't worry, I'll help if old bushy lips tries getting uppity. Keep an eye on the Atlas news, I have a friend in the media who owes me a few favors so the story should hopefully break within a few days."
"I'll tell my future classmate to keep an eye out." Weiss nodded, "Good luck and happy hunting." With that, Weiss ended the call, a dangerous smirk on her face as she followed the remaining students into the building. She was still quite angry but luckily there were about to be plenty of fights for her to work out said aggression.
AN: So next chapter will be the fights and naming of teams. I've decided most of the fight matchups already but am open to suggestions
