Mikoto was happy that Sasuke finally asked if a friend could come over. She had hoped her boy would make some friends at the academy. It would do him some good to spend more time with children his age. He always spend his time with his brother before the academy. He never wanted to part with Itachi and barely spend any time with anyone else. Mikoto is happy that her children get along so well but she really hoped Sasuke could get along with other people then his brother or Shisui. She has always known Itachi is a genius. So he would be away on missions very often. Sasuke was always down when his brother wasn't there to spend time with him. Sometimes she thought he was to clingy with Itachi. But she couldn't fault them for that.
But then one day she heard Sasuke scream ''Kai!''. It got her confused so she walked up the stairs towards his room only to find him in the hallway staring at her like she was a ghost. She got worried because she got the feeling something was wrong. Her boy started crying in her arms and when he looked up his eyes were red. Mikoto felt another crack in her heart appearing. Why do all of her children have to get the sharigan so early? She couldn't stop Fugaku from taking Itachi, only four years old, to the battle field. Then at eight, still to young according to her, he lost his teammate and came back with those damned red eyes. Fugaku was proud that their son awakened his sharigan and mastered it so young. But that was too young. Much to young. She understood, Itachi was the heir and he was smart but he was still a child. Her child. And she couldn't protect him. Itachi grew apart from them. Now it is mostly Sasuke and her in the house. She can see Itachi putting more and more distance between him and them. Even between Sasuke though Sasuke hadn't noticed she thought.
She couldn't protect Itachi and it seems she can't protect Sasuke either. He too has his sharigan now. She got even more worried when Sasuke refused to tell her how it happened. He even refused to tell it to Itachi! Thinking about Itachi, Sasuke is putting distance between them, evading him. She can't understand, what had happend? Sasuke loves his brother so much and she knows Itachi loves him too. She asked if they had a fight but Itachi said they didn't. She had already pictured it in her mind. Sasuke would distance himself from her just like Itachi had done. But she wouldn't let him. She hadn't tried with Itachi and regrets it but now she knows better. She didn't let Sasuke out of her sights. She tried to spend as much time with him as she could even if it was just the two of them in a room. She wouldn't lose him.
Her sweet and happy boy has changed. He is talking less, he sometimes looks like he doesn't know where he is even though he has lived here his whole life, he zones out a lot lost in thought, he wasn't even that excited to train with his father! That was something he always wanted, his father's attention. But he didn't seem that excited for it. She does see the happiness in his eyes when Fugaku spends time with him. It makes her wonder if she should have pushed Fugaku to spend more time with him. But she was afraid it would turn the same way it did with Itachi. But Mikoto knows Sasuke is not Itachi.
Sometimes Sasuke looks at her and looks like he has seen a ghost. That he is surprised to see her in her own house. Then she sees the realisation in his eyes, just like when he started crying all those days ago, that she is there. His behaviour changes then. He immediately tries to spend more time with her. Asks questions to hear her voice. Casually brushing past her as he tries to walk to the other side of the room. Trying to make sure she is still there. It makes her think about what could have awakened his sharigan. Maybe he had a terrible nightmare? But she has never heard before that the sharigan can get activated by having a nightmare. But it is possible she guesses. If the emotion is strong enough.
No Sasuke doesn't put distance between him and her, he is closing the distance between them and she is doing the same. It makes her think. If she tried harder with Itachi, talked back more against Fugaku... would Itachi have been be closer to them then he is now?
Sasuke is not trying to distance himself from his father either. Even though he has been late a lot for training and dinner. Giving the excuse he was with his friends. Fugaku was irritated by that but Mikoto told him he should get over it. It was great that Sasuke had friends! This is what she wanted for him! Friends are important. Especially in the academy because your classmates could become your teammates and you would fight together and protect each other. Her friens got her through the dark and the unhappy times a lot. She could tell them things she couldn't tell her family. She could rely on them. She only wished she knew who Sasuke's friends were. But if her youngest needed time that was fine. She could wait for him to tell her. And then Sasuke asked her if his friend could come over. Mikoto was overjoyed and answered that of course his friend could come over.
She heard footsteps approaching their house and went to the door to welcome Sasuke and his friend. Her eyes widen. A blond boy with blue eyes and whisker marks stare at her nervously.

Can you see the character development I am trying to give her? If you didn't...I am trying to give her some character development. Now you know.
So this chapter is all over the place. That is because I hadn't planned to write about this at all. It was only supposed to be her thoughts about Naruto but then it would have been such a short chapter so I thought I will make it longer but then there was a lot I wrote and I wrote even more so that it would make more sense and fit better together but I don't think I really succeeded. It then became too long and her thoughts about Naruto will be in the next chapter. It will just be a very short chapter.
As for the question from the guest about ships. I hope no one will drop this story because of the answer.
Romance will not be the focus of this story and it will not be important to the plot. I do have ships I like and you can find hints of them in the story but mostly only in later chapters. Those hints can easily pas as just friendship because I am not that great at writing them. One ship which was my favourite back in the day might show a bit more in later chapters but I am not sure because I haven't written those chapters yet, since it isn't important for the plot I don't have an outline for that part of the story. In this story Naruto and Sasuke are best friends, they are bro's. I hope this answer is enough. If you have any other questions feel free to ask them.
