Mikoto is putting the empty glasses away that she collected from Sasuke's room just now. Sasuke is upstairs with his friend, Naruto Uzumaki. In the last years she tried so hard not to think about him. Because thinking about him meant thinking about Kushina and it hurt. Seeing him there, on her doorstep, time seemed to stand still for a while.
She can see Kushina so easily in Naruto. Of course he has his father's blue eyes and blond hair. But his personality? His way of talking? His smile when she welcomed him into her house? Even his dream...She can really see Kushina in him.
She wasn't allowed to get to close to him. It wasn't said just...implied. After the kyuubi's attack the Hokage and the council, mostly Danzo, thought it was the Uchiha's doing. They thought it wasn't a good idea for the Uchiha to be close to the Jinchūriki. Not only that, they were put at the edge of the village. To the other clans it was also implied that it would be better if Naruto wasn't adopted by them. It could upset the balance in the village they claimed.
She heard about Naruto from the people from her clan who were in the police force and who chased Naruto when he pulled pranks. She often wondered who looked after him. But she couldn't get to close to him. It would put her clan in an even worse light. Even if she had the best intentions people would assume the worst. They did that a lot now concerning the Uchiha. Her clan has grown bitter because of it. The man she loves has grown bitter because of it.
She had tried not to think about Naruto. There was nothing she could so she thought.
Right?
She hears the boys walking down the stairs. She hears them talking happily to each other. Before, Sasuke only talked that passionately with Itachi. Naruto makes Sasuke smile but if he thinks Sasuke is being rude he is not afraid to say it. She can see her child being happy and she sees Naruto smiling brightly like the sun.
Together with Sasuke she waves goodbye to Naruto at the gate of the Uchiha district. When Naruto is out of sight she hugs Sasuke.
She thinks about the last day she saw Kushina.
''Naruto and Sasuke will be in the same academy together, right? I hope they will become friends!''
''I am really happy you two are friends.'' She whispers.
Her boys is quiet for a while but then mutters. ''Me too.''
If the Hokage and the council didn't want her boy and Naruto to be friends then they shouldn't have put them in a class together, she thinks.
