Old Scars, Future Hearts.
Chapter 2-Heartsick.
Roland meets an interesting woman who help him escape the Lost Boys. Regina meets an endearing little boy who reminds her of the one she is fighting to save. Dialogue slightly different than in the episode.
Regina could not think what she had done to deserve this.
Actually she could but she was not going to say so publicly. Had she had, the Charming's would have immediately leaped in with their trademarked list of the all the things she had done wrong. And she was certainly not giving Emma Swan any satisfaction.
But seriously, what had she done to deserve this?
Right now she was standing in mud in five hundred dollar boots on a magical island trying to find her son and rescuing him from the clutches of a lunatic demon dressed all in green who encouraged children to stab each other with poisonous sticks. With her was a one handed pirate with a wandering eye and a drinking problem. A man who was so noble it made her teeth hurt and a woman who had being responsible for the death of the only man she had ever loved and whom had sent her down a path to darkness and yet would not admit that she had played a part in that. Her old teacher who was somewhere on this island dressed all in black and probably doing something devious and…well…Emma Swan.
The less said about Henry's other mother the better in the mood she was in right now.
And to cap it all of she was entertaining a discussion where Snow White her eyes shining with believe and hope (and a desire no doubt to not have Captain Hook as a son in law) promoting a break in the rescue of Henry to rescue his father, a grown man who had apparently survived and arrived in Neverland and of course being his father's son, had gotten in trouble and was unable to free himself.
Of course what did it matter that her own boy was close to becoming lost from her forever when they could rescue Neal and he and Emma could become the family that they were destined to be and the Charming's be the perfect family and Regina would be painted out of the picture?
What did it matter that she was entering a fight with nobody else who used magic because the one person who could probably win this for her was too tired, or too busy or whatever it was to use magic? It was a simple fire spell for crying out loud! Had she not been able to do that having had her magic since birth Rumple would have…well she shuddered to think. He had never been what one would call an inspiring teacher to begin with.
Call her paranoid but she was taking everything and anything that her old enemies said with a generous helping of experience, reality and sarcasm. She wouldn't be Regina Mills, Evil Queen if she did not.
She could feel a headache coming on as well and her heal sunk a little into the mud. Regina flashed her magic and felt the grip loosen somewhat. God she hated mud. Mud reminded her of riding, riding reminded her of Daniel and she could not mourn Daniel hear on this island where Pan was, where the Charmings were.
She had thought briefly that perhaps she and Emma were more alike than she had thought. Emma had lost Neal, Henry's father and despite their history Regina had known there to be genuine feelings between the two of them. But she had put them aside to find Henry. That had been their one common goal, the one thing that had always brought them together.
Until now.
Regina waited patiently until ten so that she didn't set herself (or anyone else) on fire and then interjected again because nobody seemed to grasp the concept (except maybe Hook) that if they were being kind a distraction by Pan and if they were being unkind a complete waste of time. Regina was here to save her son and nothing more, the Lost Boys, Neal all of it was a distraction she did not need nor want to give time to.
Right now all she was being told was that someone was fighting for his life. Which meant nothing. Even if Snow White was a good tracker. Even if Neal was here. It was not her concern. Her concern was Henry. Henry her baby who was somewhere on this island at the mercy of Pan and at danger of forgetting that someone was out there looking for him, his family, his mothers, Regina.
"Fine" she snapped. She knew when she was facing down a losing battle and she was most certainly not going to give into distractions now. "You want to follow the munchkins down the dirt road you go right ahead"
And she turned on her heel wincing inwardly as she felt it made a noise in the mud that told her that the leather was being ruined and made to stalk off. Granted she could have made a more impressive exit had magic not been a danger to her right now. She still couldn't believe she existed for nearly three decades without it.
"Wait. Where are you going"
"To save our son"
"We need to stick together"
Regina laughed out loud at that. She couldn't help herself really she couldn't. That was the whole reason she was here, camping with the Charming's, for her son, because she and Emma were on the same side in this, that the most important thing was Henry. For crying out loud Emma had wrested her mother to the ground (and Regina had enjoyed the sight of that more than she could say) and watched as Regina had ripped out the heart of a child that was more machine than human all in the desire to get to their son.
"No we don't" she snapped feeling her irritation increase. God this whole idea was idiotic now she was thinking about it. No wonder they had not found Henry. They had been too busy taking rests and using human ways instead of magic, she was the Evil Queen, somewhere on this island the Dark One was prowling about. It was time that they stopped pretending to be good and got the job done. She could mourn the loss of what she had been working on later. Right now Henry was all that mattered. More than herself, more than the state of her own soul.
Gold she thought would understand.
Actually she suspected he might be the only one who ever would. Tinkerbelle could take her belief that there was a man with a tattoo out there waiting for her and shove it alongside her pixie dust where the sun didn't shine for all she cared.
"I'm tired of waiting around"
And then she was gone.
She pushed through the bushes and felt a smile on her face that she knew was a smirk.
It was time for the Evil Queen to get her son back.
Roland had been walking for a while. He was thirsty, hungry and tired, he wanted his Papa more than anything else and he wanted to sleep. More than anything he wanted to stop being brave. He wanted to stop running whenever he saw someone in the wood with a bow and arrow. He might be five and three quarters but he was not stupid, he did not know where he was but he knew that boys chasing after him laughing with sticks dripping with some dark substance was not a good idea.
Finally he had stopped sitting on a rock and breathing deeply. He heard someone crashing through the trees and the hooting of laughter and suddenly he couldn't stop the tears from falling down his face. He stood up ready to start running only to crash into someone's leg. He looked up to see a woman watching him with a raised eyebrow and then her head snapped to where the boys were coming through the trees. He moaned and hide behind her. Weather she was a stranger or not Roland thought she was so tall that she would make a good job of hiding him.
"I don't want to be one of them" he cried not caring that she probably couldn't understand him. "Please Miss, please I don't want to be here, I want to be with my Papa"
And then they were on him. The boys. Roland screamed and tried to climb the woman like a chimney but she picked him up and settled him on her hip with one hand and her other hand suddenly was a ball of fire. Roland watched with wide eyes as she threw it at one boy who suddenly stopped being so scary and screamed. The other two knocked arrows and shot them but before they could stick them she had waved her hand again and they had both gone into a nearby tree. She waved her hand again and all three collapsed into a deep sleep crumbling like…like…well Roland didn't have the words but he knew they were impressive.
She dropped him to the floor and then bent down. She was wearing a bright blue jacket and her hair was shorter than Roland had seen a woman's hair before. She smiled at him though and there was something about the smile that made him relax from the first time since he had landed on this island.
"Now then" she said gently reaching for a piece of white cloth and wiping his face. "Do you want to tell me what that was all about"
And suddenly Roland couldn't stop himself from telling her.
"The shadow." He moaned miserably. "Papa asked me to help the nice man with the shadow, he wanted to go and see his family and all I had to do was to say I believed. But he grabbed me and then dropped me and they've been chasing me since and all I want to do is find Papa" and with that he burst into tears again throwing himself into her blue jacket and getting snot all down it.
The woman however didn't seem to mind. She sat down on the rock he had been perched upon and sat him on her lap the way Papa did when he had a nightmare. Roland wiped his eyes again and she rolled her eyes passing him the handkerchief, he took it remembering the manners Papa had told him he must have when meeting strangers.
"Neal" she hissed. Roland had no idea who Neal was but she didn't seem to be angry at him and that had to be a good thing right?
"Well" she said finally. "Let's do this again shall we? My name's Regina"
"Roland" Roland said tearfully gulping down some more tears. "My name's Roland Hood and I'm five and three quarters, nearly but not quite six"
"Well Roland Hood whose five and three quarters, nearly but not quite six" Regina said with a smile. "Now we've established your not a Lost Boy I might need you to be brave a little bit longer"
Oh. Roland had wanted something to eat and drink, some sleep and his father. And it didn't have to be in the order in his head either. He just didn't want to be brave anymore. He was dreadfully tired of being brave.
But there was something about this lady…Regina…that made him want to at least try and besides he found that he wanted to trust her. She had protected him from the people who were after him. She had helped him. Besides Papa had always said the first job of a Merry Man was to help people in need. He forced a small smile and nodded.
"Would you like to walk or may I carry you?"
Roland thought about this.
"I can walk in a bit" he said finally. Regina nodded and then hoisted him onto her hip. Roland supposed that meant she was strong. Papa was always telling him he was getting bigger and bigger every day.
"Now Peter Pan has my son Henry. And were going to find a man who is damn well gonna help me get him back"
Oh.
"Who?"
"He's the Dark One. But don't worry" she said catching Roland's expression no doubt. Everyone feared the Dark One.
"He's going to help me. I should tell you that I used to be in another life the Evil Queen"
Roland thought about this. He supposed it should worry him but he was tired and she was warm and she had helped him and if she was still Evil she wouldn't have done that he supposed. He had done enough thinking today.
"You're the only one the Dark One was ever afraid off" he mumbled sleepily. Regina laughed. "I doubt it but thank you" she said quietly. "I promise you Roland nobody will hurt you, I give you my word."
Roland's last thought was that other people might want a bit more than that but he was perfectly fine with her word. Papa was always saying people deserved second chances. Besides, she had saved him.
And with that he leaned her head against her shoulder as she walked through the undergrowth and went to sleep.
And there you have it, I hope you liked it and i will do my best to update soon.
Next Chapter-Regina contemplates her decisions, Neal is found alive, Roland meets a real life mermaid and Rumple contemplates what a quiet life must look like.
