CHAPTER 2

Emily was in the Ladies room at Camp Golf puking her guts out this morning. She hadn't told Mark yet, but she's pregnant... She's been pregnant for a couple of months, but has been so caught up in her duties as Ranger Chief that she's been keeping it secret... unfortunately, after the stunt at Bonnie Springs, she knows she can longer put off telling Mark she's pregnant. Emily sighed deeply, "I guess I can't put off telling him anymore." And with that, Emily went to her office to prepare for Mark to come by with the morning report.

Mark was on his way to drop of the Morning Reports at his wife's office. He knew something was off about her as of late, but he didn't pry into it: she'd tell him when she is ready. He entered her office and set the reports on her desk. "Here you go Chief," he said with a hint of teasing in his voice, "Anything else you need?"

Emily sighed as she said, "Shut the door honey."

"Is this about what's been wrong with you lately," asked Mark as did what he was told.

"Yes," she replied, "Though wrong is hardly how I'd describe it."

"Then how would you describe it?"

The Ranger Chief smiled as she said, "I'm pregnant."

Mark was at a loss for words: his mouth was open, and sounds came out as he tried to form words, but he couldn't due to the overwhelming sense of joy he was experiencing. Once he finally found his voice he said, "Th-that's great! I'm gonna be a father!" Then the gravity of those words hit him, "Oh God, I'm gonna be a father."

"Ranger Mark Frey," Emily Ghost Frey said with a commanding tone, "Due to the circumstances, I am no longer fit for active duty. Therefore I am assigning you the position of acting Ranger Chief for the next few months. I'll still do the paperwork, but you are to perform my more active duties. One such duty is the Ranger Induction Ceremony being held tonight."

Mark smiled as he saluted his wife, "Ma'am, yes ma'am."

"Good," she replied, "You're dismissed."

Mark sat at the Ham Radio with every intention of contacting his mother at Camp Searchlight. The former NCR Base had been cleansed of Radiation and turned into the Neo-Enclave's base of Operations due to the Airport due south of the base, giving them a place to set the Vertibirds down. "Searchlight, this is Lone Wolf," he said.

"Searchlight acknowledges," replied the Radio Operator, "What is your reason for calling, Lone Wolf."

"I need to speak with the Supreme Commandante," he answered, "What I have to tell her is personal."

"Alright, connecting you now."

Mark sat there for about a minute until his mother came on the Radio, "Hey Mark, what's going on?"

"I'M GONNA BE A FATHER," he shouted.

"SQUEEEEEEEEEEEE!" Rainah was clearly excited to find out she would be a grandmother at 37 years old. "OHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGOD! I'M GONNA BE A GRANDMOTHER!"

Mark couldn't help but chuckle at his mother's excitement.

Lizzie and Tyris were in their room at the Lucky 38. They, alongside Mina and Sammy Weathers had taken up the task of managing the Casino since Jason and Rainah were busy keeping the soldiers of the Neo-Enclave in line. Lizzie was a slow riser, and Tyris liked keeping her company ... as a result, Mina and Sammy were the responsible ones and often made breakfast. Therefore, it shouldn't be a surprise when the two burst into the room squealing like rabid fan girls when Rainah contacted them and told them the good news. "The hell are you two squealing about now," grumbled Mary since she really didn't enjoy these kinds of antics.

Sammy and Mina grinned at one another before shouting, "MARK AND EMILY ARE HAVING A BABY!"

Even Tyris was up and at attention all the sudden: children were a big deal in the Kiff Tribe and it was considered the highest honor and greatest responsibility to be blessed with a child. "We shall honor our ancestors by insuring this child has a bright future," he said. It was so rare for his Tribal Roots to come out that people often forget he's technically a tribal... but every now and then, something comes along that proves how deeply it is ingrained into who he is.

Mark wore his personal set of Desert Ranger Combat Armor as he stood on the announcement podium setup at Camp Golf. He only wore this armor during the Ranger Induction Ceremony since it was required of all Rangers present for the Ceremony. "To those of you who have done this before, you know it's usually my wife who's up here during this Ceremony," stated Mark, "But since I'm gonna be a father-"

The Rangers suddenly burst out into cheers, and the occasional, "WAY TO GO MARK!" Could be heard amongst the Rangers.

Mark was thankful he was wearing the Helmet since it concealed his embarrassment, "Emily has made me acting Ranger Chief until our child is born." He then turned to the 125 men and women who had proven they were Ranger Material in the Six months it took to complete Ranger School and said, "Money cannot buy the Honor you have each earned this day." They were each presented their Armor and Ranger Sequoia by the Ranger Elite who had been chosen to train them on the individual level, "You have made not only your fellow Desert Rangers, but the entirety of the NVC proud."

They each bowed their heads and said, "thank you Chief."

Mark smiled beneath his mask as he went to change back into his usual attire. The After Party was one of the best things about being a Desert Ranger.

The NVC had setup a Check-in station at the Nipton Road Rest Stop to keep track of NCR citizens who entered the Mojave. Many NCR citizens had immigrated to the Mojave and gained NVC Citizenship since taxes were much more reasonable and there were laws against tolls... That being said there are still others who despise the NVC and see the Desert Rangers as Traitors. NCR had attempted to put a Bounty of $10,000 in NCR money on the Rangers, $50,000 on any NVC leaders, and $500,000 on Ryusuke Kenta and his family members. Fortunately, anyone dumb enough to try ended up getting a bullet between their eyes. Eventually, the Courier had his fill and placed a Bounty of 10,000,000 caps on Kimball's head. After ten assassination attempts, the NCR backed down and the Bounties were resended.

A particularly interesting individual had finally reached NVC Territory because she'd been taxed to the point if poverty living in the NCR. "Name," asked the NVC Corporal who was in charge of recording those who had entered the Mojave.

A blond woman wearing a Golden Gecko Leather Jacket, Armor Plates, a Rattan Cowboy Hat, and Sunglasses smiled and said, "Willow."

"Reason for coming to the NVC?"

"I'm looking to start a new life here," she replied.

"An immigrant huh," the Trooper said mirthfully, "seems more and more NCR Citizens are coming here to escape the overbearing taxes the Senate puts on them every day."

"Tell me about it," she said with a laugh.

The trooper chuckled before continuing, "Is there any trade you're particularly skilled at?"

"I've done a lot of Prospecting, but I'm looking to get into something a little safer," she replied, "Like Caravan work!"

The trooper nodded before saying, "Aright then, head North towards Vegas. Once there you should go to the Cassidy Caravan Company Head Quarters. It's the old Crimson Caravan Location."

Willow bowed respectfully and said, "Thank you sir."

Willow began heading up the road until she met a family just outside of Goodsprings. The man wore a Green Trench Coat with Stars on the Shoulders and a Green Beret with Steel Blue Eyes, Auburn hair, and a Survivalist Beard; the Woman has Red Hair and is wearing a Ranger Grey Hat and a Bounty Hunter Duster, and their Little Boy has Brownish-Red hair and wears overalls. The woman was carrying a Trail Carbine, the man a Ranger Sequoia, and the boy had a BB Gun. "Hey," the blond said causally, "You guys heading north?"

The man nodded and said, "Yep."

"Mind if I tag along," she asked.

The woman smiled, "Not at all."

"Thank you," the younger woman said happily, "I'm Willow, by the way."

"Ryusuke Kenta," he told her, "Leader of the New Vegas Confederacy... this Iis my Wife Cassidy, and our son John."

"Hehe, Looks like I'll be able to apply for that job sooner than expected," Willow said happily.

"So you're looking to get into the caravan business," the Caravan Queen said with a smirk, "What's your qualifications?"

"Well, I am an excellent negotiator," stated the blond, "But that comes with prospecting: you gotta be able to haggle to get a good deal."

Cass nodded, "Negotiation skills are definitely a good to have in this line of work... anything else?"

"I'm solid in a fight, but that's a given when you wander the wastes," Willow added.

Cass smirked, "Good thing... We'll see about filling out the paperwork once we get back to Vegas, so consider yourself hired."

"Yes!"

They continued their journey in relative silence, but Willow found herself curious when she saw occasionally saw Brotherhood of Steel Paladin's working alongside the five man squads consisting of four troopers and a single Desert Ranger patrolling I-15 at various points. "I gotta ask how you got the Brotherhood of Steel to help with the patrols," she blurted out.

Ryusuke smirked, "The current leader of the Mojave Chapter is a good friend of mine and believes that you will catch more Bloat Flies with Honey than you will with Vinegar.

The blond nodded "Good Philosophy."

"Indeed."

As they continued on, Willow saw the Yangtze Compound and asked, "Is that where the patrols are based?"

"It's actually a secure facility where the NVC Leadership and their families will take refuge in the Event of a large scale invasion," stated Kenta, "But yes, that's where most of the patrols in this area are based."

"Who would try to invade the NVC," the blond asked, "You've arguably got the strongest military in the wastes."

"The Legion and NCR are none too fond of us," stated Cass, "We have no doubt that they will one day retaliate for their humiliating defeat at Hoover Dam."

"First the Legion, then NCR," the Courier added.

"What makes you think it'll be in that order," asked Willow.

"Because General Lee Oliver is an opportunist," answered Kenta, "He's earned the nickname General Wait and See because of it."

Willow nodded her head, "That does sound like him."

It was dark by the time they reached Sloan, and while Ryusuke didn't have any problems with traveling at night, John did: the 2 year old needs rest. "We'll stay here for the night," the Courier declared as he picked up his son and walked into the workers camp that had been expanded to accommodate travellers, thus functioning as a Rest Stop. It was one of many the Courier saw fit to setup throughout Confederacy Territory: a good night's sleep in a secure location is one of the many reasons why most who visit the NVC end up staying.

Joshua Graham was patrolling Freeside that night. The Malpais Legate had taken up residents in the independent community, and has no issue with keeping the streets clean. Most thugs are afraid to even try anything when the Burned Man is out on patrol... That being said, there are a few Idiots here and there that try something particularly stupid from time to time. In this case, three Junkies hopped up on Med-X, Psycho, and Turbo came came charging at him. "Now you've called down thw wrath," yelled Graham drew his pistol and took aim. He managed to drop the first two with precision headshots, but the last one has tackled him before he could adjust his aim. The Junky began beating Joshua with the brass knuckles before the New Canaanite emptied his clip. He put a bullet in his abdomen, two in his chest, and one in his head. The Malpais Legate grunted in pain as he got to his feet, "I guess I should go see the Followers... Lord knows I took a pretty vicious beating."

XxX

Joshua stumbled into the Old Mormon Fort around midnight, and Lilynette Frey was the only one awake. "You get your ass beat again," she asked. This was not the first time this had happened: Joshua had a habit of getting in over his head in freeside, often attacked by sizable groups of strung out junkies looking to collect a bounty a Brahmin Baron from NCR put on the man. Joshua accepted the challenge having this bounty on his head brought; it kept him on his toes and his reflexes sharp.

"More or less," the burned man replied.

Lily just shook her head, "You know we could give you skin grafts... at least then you wouldn't be in constant pain."

"It is my punishment for the crimes I've committed," answered Joshua.

"Haven't you been punished enough," she asked tenderly.

"After everything I've done," he said calmly, "No... I deserve to burn in Hell for my sins."

"We all deserve to burn for our sins," she quipped, "It is through the grace of God made possible by the by the death, burial, and resurrection of his son Jesus Christ."

Graham was stunned by this, "How do you know-"

"The Followers have quite the collection of books," she stated, "Among them I found a King James Bible... I prefer it to your Book of Mormon."

"I don't suppose you'd let me see this King James Bible," inquired Joshua.

Lily smiled, "Once we've tended to your injuries."

They went to a tent where the Red Head carefully peeled the bandages off of Joshua, revealing his scarred flesh. Lilynettw remembered feeling pity for the man the first time she saw him without the bandages... now she only felt admiration for the strength he's displayed ever since Caesar burned him. She went through and applied disinfectant to the wounds that opened up during the fight, bandaged the wounds, then gave him a new set of wraps for his burned body. "There we go," she said as she got up and walked over to her desk. She opened up a Drawer and pulled out a Black, Hardback copy of the King James Bible. She walked over and sat down beside him as she opened it the very first page where the words Authorized King James Version written on it. "Of all the bibles I've come across, none have had anything like that written in it," she stated.

The Kenta's and Willow got up early the next morning and had Wasteland Omelets for breakfast before continuing their journey to Vegas. Along the way, Willow saw how there were Engineers working on reconstructing the Train Tracks that were found in segments throughout the Mojave. "One of our most important projects to date is the restoration of the Railroads in NVC Territory," Ryusuke told her, "It'll make travelling much safer in general, and most anybody will be able to afford the 15 cap admission fee."

Willow was surprised by this, "You're really on top of things out here."

"It's something I've had against the NCR for quite some time," the Comander and Chief of the NVC replied, "They're too focused on Expansion to do anything about their less than ideal infrastructure."

"Which is another thing the NVC has over the NCR," the Blond quipped.

XxX

It was three hours before sundown when they arrived at the Freeside East Gate. Cass and Willow went to the Cassidy Caravan HQ while Ryusuke took John to see his adopted sister Jocelyn. Jocelyn was among those who were held captive by the Fiends before Chief Emily Ghost Frey, Cass, and himself lead a daring assault on the Fiends base of operations. Despite the fact that she was only 11 years old, she proved to be a capable fighter when one of the Troopers was wounded by a lucky shot. The girl grabbed the man's Assault Carbine, and killed the fiend who shot him before turning to the corridor that three more were coming through and unloaded into them. Emily was so impressed by the girl that she offered to give her a shot at being a Ranger at Age 13. Kenta had made it a law that you had to at least be 14 to enlist, but was also impressed by the girls skills, so he decided to adopt her so he could train her. He was able to convince the King to give the girl her own house, which was right beside the Silver Rush.

Kenta walked in and said, "Jocey, we're home."

A small girl with long brown hair and blue eyes came downstairs... If one didn't know better, they'd think she was their biological daughter. "Hello Papa," she said politely as she went up and hugged the man, "I take it Mama had business?"

"She has to do some paperwork so she can officially hire a new employee," he explained.

Jocelyn nodded before saying, "I noticed that you were gone longer than expected... Why is that?"

Ryusuke sighed deeply, "The Coalition kidnapped John and Lucia... As you can see, we successfully rescued them, but we also learned that there are a lot of children in Bonnie Springs."

Jocelyn was shocked to have learned this: the fact that the Raiders Coalition had kidnapped her baby brother was one thing, but finding out that there is sizable number of children in their base if operations made her realize that the only way to deal with the coalition would be to draw the bulk of their force's out of Bonnie Springs. "I'm going to accompany John and Lucia whenever they go with you guys from now on," stated Jocelyn, "Somebody's got to be able to keep an eye on them."

Kenta smiled at his adoptive daughter, "And so you will." He then bent down and gave a kiss on the forehead, "Now let's get you kids tucked in."
