Chapter 7
The rangers were at the beach helping with the clean-up that Melody had organised. "And that's the last of it" said Leo as he and James threw the last of the garbage bags they had filled into the dumpster. "The beach hasn't looked this good in ages" said Melody her eyes shining with joy "I honestly can't thank you guys enough". "Hey to celebrate let's have a beach day this weekend" said Jack excitedly "we can invite our families, have a barbeque, make sandcastles go swimming" he went on not noticing how Melody froze at the mention of swimming "what do you think Mel?" he asked. "Uh that sounds fun" she said trying to avoid eye contact "but you know we should also keep an eye out for Maleficent and her goons" she said trying to look regretful. "Yen Sid would keep us updated on anything that she does" said James steeping forward giving Melody a look at her strange behaviour. "Well I uh I just remembered that I have this thing this weekend so I…" Melody trailed off not really sure where she was headed with this herself. "Melody" said Jessie putting a hand on the blue ranger shoulder "I think it's time you tell them" she said gesturing to the confused boys. Melody signed before "I'm scared of water" she admitted looking at the ground. The boys stared at her quietly for several seconds until… "What" they all echoed in disbelief. "How and why are you scared of water you have mermaid power?" Jack questioned in disbelief. "And you've organised hundreds of clean ups at beaches how can you be scared" James joined in confusion. "Look when I was nine my family and I went out on a boat and there was a storm" said Melody crossing her arms and looking down as Jessie gently rubbed her back in support "I got knocked over board" she revealed as the boys dropped their mouths in shock. "Since then I've been terrified of going in to the water" she confessed sadly. "Well how about this" said Leo comfortingly "the five of us will go to the beach and you don't have to go anywhere near the water if you don't want to" he promised. "I guess" said Melody uncertainly. What the rangers didn't know was that Diablo was soaring high above them in the clouds and had picked up their entire conversation. The evil raven flew back to the dark fortress and landed on Maleficent's shoulder and softly cawed into his mistress's ear. "So the little mermaid's precious chosen one is afraid of the sea" she said softly before laughing evilly "how amusing". "I fail to see how that can help us" said Gaston in a bored manner. "It can help us you fool" said Maleficent "if we take the battle to the sea". "Ah you gotta plan then" said Facilier intrigued. "I do indeed and I also know just who to use" said Maleficent summoning two dark essences and shot them with a blast of purple lightning fusing them together. Soon a slightly obese finned monster, with dark scaled skin and wearing the ragged remains of a naval captain's uniform. The most defining feature of this creature was its two writhing necks, one a jet black and the other a poisonous purple both bearing the head of an evil looking eel both with one dead eye. "Welcome Flotslam and Jetslash" said Maleficent "born from the combined essence of my old friend Ursula's minions, you have the power of lightning and pollution, you will use your new found power to bring the blue ranger into the sea and destroy her" she commanded. "Yes Maleficent" said Flotslam "we will see to this Poor sweet child" said Jetslash as their two good eyes glowed yellow. Back at the beach the rangers had packed up all their supplies and were preparing to head back into town "hey you know whatever happens on Saturday we'll all be there right" said James to Melody who smiled "yeah I know" she replied. Suddenly they could hear the sound of screams as people began to flee the beach in terror. The Rangers exchanged looks knowing what this meant: Morphin Time. "Disney Power, Ranger Power ha" they cried Morphing into their Ranger forms as they raced back into the beach. Once they arrived they saw Flotslam and Jetslash standing atop a torrent of water as Jetslash spewed a foul smelling purple muck on to the beach which the goblins Maleficent sent to help him spread across the area with their weapons while Gaston stood to the side and watched. "No" cried Melody in horror "their destroying the beach". "And now it's your turn Rangers" said Gaston drawing his sword and began to duel with Leo as the goblins attacked James, Jessie and Jack. Melody summoned the trident of the sea and tried to summon the tide to wash away the muck. "Aw she thinks she can stop us" said Flotslam "let's show her how wrong she is" suggested Jetslash as they sent blasts of lightning and muck at her knocking the blue ranger off her feet. The monstrous eels leaped down from the water and grabbed the blue ranger. "It's time to put this poor child back into water" said Jetslash "I agree back under the sea little fish" laughed Flotslam. "No, no please not the water" cried Melody in terror as they hurled her into the sea. "Melody" cried Jessie in horror trying desperately to save her friend only to be blocked by the goblins. "Your blue ranger is finished" Gaston laughed evilly swinging his sword at his red rival "and so are all of you". Under the waves Melody desperately tried to stay afloat, but could only panic as she demorphed and everything around her seemed to get darker…when suddenly it stopped. The water around her seemed to withdraw forming an air bubble as she gently landed on the ocean floor and the water outside her bubble seemed to brighten and she could see so many fish and aquatic plant life around her. "Beautiful isn't it" said a voice from behind her. Melody turned around and saw a beautiful woman with red hair…and a sea-green fish tail sitting on one of the rocks behind her. "Are…are you?" gasped Melody hardly able to draw breath. "Yes Melody" said the woman giving her a gentle smile "I am Ariel". "But I thought I carried your essence inside my morpher" said Melody confused looking at it. Ariel gently took Melody's hand and brought her gaze back to her "it's not within the morpher, I live on in you" she corrected. "Why did you pick me to be your ranger?" said Melody "I can't stand being in in a pool, let alone the ocean". "Because of your pure heart" said Ariel "Melody despite your fears you still put so much effort in to cleaning the beach and helping your friends". "In my world I gave up my fin to be with one I love" she went on "I almost forget where I came from but in the end I choose to be part of both worlds" she said as in her hand appeared the Trident of the sea. "The choice is to continue is yours" said Ariel "what do you pick". "I choose" said Melody looking down before meeting Ariel's gaze with determination "to be part of your world" she said taking the Trident as Ariel became a blue light that washed over her and returned her to ranger form and she soon shot straight to the surface. Flotslam and Jetslash had the rangers against the wall with the goblins and Gaston backing them up. "Time to settle this" said Flotslam and Jetslash at once. "I don't think so, you've forgotten who you're dealing with" said a voice as a second torrent of water rose and riding on it was "Sympathy of Ariel, Blue Disney Ranger" yelled Melody. "What" said Jetslash "impossible" cried Flotslam? "Oh it's possible" said Melody "now let me show you my world" she said pointing her trident at the monster causing two arms of water to grab hold of them and drag them back into the water. The Rangers began fighting against the Goblins and Gaston with renewed vigour. "That's our girl" said Jack using his knife to battle with the goblins. Under the sea Flotslam and Jetslash were trying to get their bearings, when Melody swam effortlessly in front of them. "You know I should thank you" she said as she casually leaned against her Trident "for showing me that the sea isn't something to be afraid of its part of me" she declared. "Final Strike" she declared as the points of the Trident began to glow a bright blue the water shot her straight to her aquatic foes. "Ahh" screamed Flotslam "NOOO" screamed Jetslash as they exploded in a burst of sea vapour. The next day the Rangers and their families gathered at the beach to celebrate its cleaning. "Hey guys" said Leo as he and his father Marcus worked on the barbecue "burgers are ready". "Where's Melody?" asked Jack as he gave some food to his younger sisters Maggie and Jane. "Where do you think" said James pointing to the sea and they all saw Melody swimming happily "she'll come back to shore when she's ready". Jessie smiled proud of her friend for having been able to face her fear "that's our little mermaid" she whispered softly to herself.
