Naruto watched the Hokage tower as the light faded from the sky, he knew that the old man retired around this time and he knew that the ANBU presence in the building lessened when he left. When Naruto had been more of a prankster, before spending time with Elsa and Sasuke had become his focus, he had successfully sneaked into the Hokage's office and placed a whoopie cushion on the man's chair and no ANBU had stopped him then. He planned to disguise his actions today as another prank to hide his actual motives. He grimaced slightly as the moon started to rise knowing he would be late to the party.
After everyone had been given their headbands, he had told Elsa and Sasuke that he would need to take care of some business and that he would meet them at the barbeque place later. They had given him a weird look but he just smiled and made sure they thought he was just planning a prank or something. Even though he rarely had the time to go on large prank sprees as he had in the past he still enjoyed playing one or two now and then. He had snuck to the back of the Hokage's tower and jammed some paper into a window so that it would appear shut but he would be able to pry it up with a kunai. He now made his way to the window and used it as his entry point for the building. Sneaking through the halls he made sure that the prop glitter bomb he had to sell his fake was visible as he made his way up the tower just in case any ANBU were watching him.
Soon, he was entering the office of the Hokage himself. Looking around he spotted the cabinet that Mizuki had described and pulled out the key he had been given to get into it. Opening the doors he found his target resting on a stand in the center. Mizuki had told him it was a list of jutsu specific to Konoha and that it was used as a means to reward success in missions by giving the ninjas responsible a new technique. Grabbing the scroll, Naruto slung it over his shoulder and prepared to escape only to hear the doors to the office opening behind him.
"Naruto?" the Hokage's confused voice sounded behind him.
Turning, Naruto saw the old man's eyes widening in shock and the orange-clad ninja's mind raced trying to think of a way out of his current predicament. Luckily for him, he spent time regularly with Jiraiya and the man had made Naruto aware of certain aspects of the Hokage's conduct behind closed doors. From there, Naruto's mind moved to a technique he had thought up but would never dream of using anywhere where Elsa might see or hear of it, knowing that the girl would undoubtedly be offended by the idea. Thinking about how desperate times call for desperate measures, however, Naruto quickly brought his hands together and activated the technique.
"Sexy Technique,"
The sight in front of the Hokage caught him completely by surprise. The sudden sensory overload made the old man stumble back and cover his eyes. His face flushed red so fast that he became light-headed. All of this was the perfect distraction for Naruto to run to the large window overlooking the village, throw it open, and leap out into the night. He knew that getting caught would hurt his score but he hoped that by still completing the mission he would gain enough points to close the gap between him and Sasuke.
Naruto bolted through the village moving as stealthily as he could to avoid ninja patrols until, panting for breath, he landed in a forest clearing in one of the training grounds of Konoha. He quickly stilled his breathing and listened carefully for signs of pursuit. After a minute he didn't hear anything and sighed in relief.
"Wow, Mizuki-sensei must not have let enough people know about the extra credit assignment," Naruto said to himself.
Looking around Naruto made sure that he was in the right place to turn in the scroll. Nodding to himself he sat to wait for an instructor to come to accept the scroll just like he had been told. After only a few seconds, however, curiosity began to bubble up in his stomach.
"While I wait," he reasoned to himself, "there is no harm in peeking at the jutsu in the scroll is there?"
Reaching over Naruto untied the cord keeping the scroll closed and unrolled the first portion.
"Huh, a new clone technique, I wonder if it will be easier than the usual one."
Elsa was worried. They had been at the barbeque restaurant for an hour already and Naruto had yet to show up. All of the other planned guests for the evening had arrived. To Elsa's right were Yugao, Kurenai, and Anko, all of whom had begun eating and were telling stories about their early days as ninjas. Across from her was Hinata and Hanabi, who were accompanied by a bodyguard who stood stoically behind the two girls. Then to Elsa's left sat Sasuke, who was trying very hard not to brood. He wasn't very close with anyone else in the room but he knew that they were all good friends of Elsa and Naruto so he was friendly with them. Unfortunately, Jiraiya hadn't been able to come, when he was last in the village they had spoken to him about their pending graduation and he had told them that he would not be able to make it due to an important assignment he would be on, so the only person missing was Naruto himself.
Elsa had known something was up when the boy was so cryptic about his plans, he was always open about pranks he had planned in the past but for some reason today he had decided to be cagey. Something in Elsa felt that he would be getting into trouble and she wasn't there to help him out of it. Sasuke seemed to sense her mood and spoke quietly to her.
"Don't worry, knowing him he probably just went to get ramen instead of barbeque and he will show up any minute with a bowl in his hands."
Elsa tried to smile at the joke, she could tell that the black-haired boy was trying to lift her spirits. She opened her mouth to thank him but they were interrupted when the door to the private room they were in burst open and Iruka-sensei of all people barged in.
"Has Naruto been here tonight?"
Everyone in the party stared at him before Elsa stood, worry clear on her face.
"What happened?"
Iruka froze at the look Elsa was giving him, then sighed and appeared to relax.
"Nothing happened," the teacher said and gave her a reassuring smile, "he just pulled a prank on the Hokage and we are trying to find him so the Hokage can talk to him."
Iruka then left saying he would continue to look elsewhere, and Sasuke and Hinata relaxed at the teacher's reassurance. Elsa did her best to smile as well but something kept her from relaxing completely. She had noticed that even as the teacher had relaxed, Yugao, Kurenai, and Anko had stayed tense, as if they realized that something wasn't right about the teacher's words. The party continued, though more subdued for a few hours more before Hinata and Hanabi had to leave due to their curfew. Another hour passed and a server came to let them know that the restaurant was closing. Naruto never came. As they left the restaurant Sasuke placed a comforting hand on Elsa's arm.
"Don't worry, Naruto probably got caught and they made him stay in a holding cell overnight as punishment for his prank. He will be there tomorrow and we can rub it in his face that he missed out on the party for being stupid."
Elsa smiled slightly at her friend's attempt to soothe her worries.
"You're right Sasuke, I will see you tomorrow." with their goodbyes said Elsa left to follow Yugao and the other's back to her apartment. Sasuke went his own way but as soon as they were apart Sasuke leaped onto a roof and began moving at a hurried pace.
Naruto leaned back against a tree trying to catch his breath after the intense training he had just completed. As he looked up through the canopy of trees Naruto could no longer see the moon. Hours had passed while he was here in these woods and it made him grit his teeth in frustration that he had missed the party. But more than anything he was disappointed with himself. His friends and he had been planning the party for weeks to celebrate graduating, they were going to be considered adults and move forward into the next stage of their lives together. Yet here he was acting like a selfish child choosing one friend over the other, jealous at the thought of Sasuke getting to spend more time with Elsa than he would.
Naruto pulled off the headband he had been wearing ever since that afternoon and stared at it. It was the symbol of a ninja of the village. By wearing this he had proved that he had the skill necessary to represent the village, but now he didn't feel like he was representing the village well. What kind of man tried to undercut a friend in such a way as he had. He dropped his head in shame. He would do anything for Elsa, she had saved him, but she had also saved Sasuke. Naruto knew that Sasuke deserved to be her teammate just as much as Naruto did if not more so. He was the heir to a prestigious clan and she was a princess from a far off kingdom, something she had revealed to them a few years ago. Naruto was the odd one out, an orphan, rejected by the village, never knowing who his family was. One of the reasons he wanted to be Hokage these days was so that he would finally fit in with his friends. But by doing this, Naruto knew he was acting in a way that neither of them would, they were noble and his actions were not.
Shaking his head he resolved himself. When the instructor came Naruto would give them the scroll and turn down any extra points. Sasuke may have beaten him this time but Naruto would win next time, and he would do it fair and square. His motto about cheating was supposed to be a joke. Yes, he and Sasuke would always look for a way to get a leg up in competition, but they were always straightforward. This, going behind Sasuke's back to try and get ahead was wrong.
Naruto's thoughts were interrupted by the sounds of rustling in the nearby underbrush. Naruto stood, thinking it must be the instructor finally arriving to take the scroll and end the exercise. Naruto was shocked however when out of the trees walked the form of Sasuke.
"Sasuke?" Naruto said, eyes wide, "What are you doing here?"
Sasuke didn't answer, he just walked quietly up to Naruto, then, when he was close enough, launched a punch into the blond boy's face knocking him to the ground.
"What do you think you're doing idiot?!" the boy yelled.
"Wha-" Naruto said dazedly as he recovered from the blow.
"You missed the party and made Elsa worry and for what? All so you could pull one last big prank on the Hokage?"
Naruto shook his head as it finally cleared and he registered the other boy's words.
"What are you talking about Sasuke? What prank?" Naruto said back as he stood. "How did you even find me? This is supposed to be a secret location for this mission."
"I found you because after checking everywhere else the only place I could think to look were the training grounds. And what mission are you talking about?" the other boy said suspiciously.
"N-nothing," Naruto said back, suddenly nervous. He did not want Sasuke to learn about what he had tried to do. He had hoped he would just be able to turn in the scroll, decline the points and forget that this ever happened.
"What are you hiding?" Sasuke asked accusingly.
"Nothing, I… Look out!" Naruto suddenly cried. Both boys jumped to their right causing them to split as a hail of kunai struck the ground where they had been.
Looking at the trees Naruto saw Mizuki standing in one with two oversized Shuriken on his back, and an out of character look of annoyance on his face. Naruto wondered if this was somehow a continuation of the extra credit assignment until the teacher suddenly spoke.
"Sasuke, get back, Naruto has betrayed the village."
Naruto's jaw dropped and he looked back to his friend who had a similar look of shock.
"What do you mean?" Sasuke asked, confused.
Mizuki was silent for a moment before he spoke again, his voice grave.
"That scroll he has is a priceless artifact that contains forbidden techniques. It is supposed to be under the guardianship of the Hokage, but Naruto snuck in somehow and stole it."
"No!" Naruto objected, "What are you saying, Mizuki-sensei? I-"
Naruto was interrupted by the gray-haired chunin.
"Don't listen to him Sasuke. I didn't want to have to say this but, we believe he is working with your brother."
Sasuke jolted at the accusation and Naruto's eyes bounced back and forth between Sasuke and Mizuki. Naruto knew that Sasuke was still filled with hatred toward his brother. He and Elsa did their best to be friends that helped Sasuke feel happier, but whenever his brother was mentioned or he was left alone for two long Sasuke's face would get dark. Naruto had no idea of how the other boy would react.
Sasuke launched himself at Naruto. The orange-clad boy's eyes widened in despair until suddenly Sasuke pivoted as he ran and launched a volley of shuriken at Mizuki forcing the chunin to retreat slightly. Sasuke then grabbed Naruto and pulled him behind a tree for cover.
"Sasuke?" Naruto asked.
"I don't know what's going on," the other boy responded, "but I know one thing. Mizuki is full of crap." Naruto began to smile at his friend believing in him but halted after Sasuke's next comment, "There is no way Itachi would trust anything to an idiot like you."
"Hey," Naruto said back, "I'll have you know that I did sneak into the Hokage tower and steal a scroll of techniques. Though, apparently, I wasn't allowed to."
"Ugh, Sasuke," Mizuki's condescending voice rang through the clearing, "you foolish boy. If you had played along you could have walked away from this but now, I will have to kill both of you to cover my tracks. Luckily I bet I can keep you two from working together."
"Oh yeah?" Naruto yelled back, "How are you going to do that?"
"I will just have to tell the truth," Mizuki said, instantly shutting Naruto up.
"You know Sasuke, the top boy and girl student at the academy every year are always put on a team together. You are the top boy student, guess who was the top girl."
The two boys sat in silence when the voice paused. It came back suddenly from a different direction making them shift uncomfortably.
"That's right, it was Elsa. I have had to watch the three of you for the last five years and I have seen the way you both look at her. It makes sense you know, the exotic foreign princess shows up and rescues two lost souls from their loneliness, of course, you would both fall in love with her." A blush formed on each of the boy's faces despite the situation, but the color drained away from their faces as the teacher continued speaking in a flat voice. "It's so sweet I could puke."
Suddenly Naruto heard a whistling sound in the air and tackled Sasuke to the ground as one of the oversized Shuriken that Mizuki had been carrying slammed into the tree where their heads had just been. Immediately the two boys scrambled up and moved as another hail of kunai hit the ground they had just been on. Naruto and Sasuke scrambled to another hiding spot, each scanning the trees for any sign of Mizuki's whereabouts.
"Anyway," the teacher's voice appeared again, speaking as though he hadn't just tried to kill them. "I am sure you can imagine, Sasuke, how Naruto reacted when I told him this. After all, his rival in life and love would suddenly get a huge advantage. You and Elsa spending long stretches outside the village together on missions, saving each other's lives, while he would be stuck with two random strangers picked from a class of people who honestly couldn't care less about him. Ugh, just picture if he had been put on a team with Haruno, having to deal with her shrill screeching day in and day out. I honestly don't blame Naruto for looking for any way possible to take your place at the top. What's that saying you two like so much, 'if you're not cheating, you're not trying."
Mizuki exploded out of the shadows. With a vicious kick, he launched Naruto away and grabbed Sasuke, pinning him to the tree the boys had kept at their backs.
"He didn't think twice about throwing you away so that he could be with Elsa. So, tell you what as a consolation I won't kill you, all you have to do is sit right here and watch me take care of that trash." He punctuated his words by driving a kunai into Sasuke's leg. He left the knife in so that the boy would be less likely to bleed out and dropped him before turning to Naruto who was picking himself up and looked frozen in place like a rabbit who had seen a wolf.
"Don't feel bad about this Sasuke, after all, he is nothing but an evil, heartless, de-"
"Shut your mouth!" A new voice ripped through the night as Iruka jumped out and delivered a flying punch into Mizuki's face.
The two boys looked in awe at the heroic arrival of their other teacher. His attack had thrown Mizuki away a few feet allowing Iruka to stand protectively in front of them.
"Iruka," Mizuki hissed out hatefully, "how did you get here?"
"As I was searching I heard someone mention that they saw Sasuke coming this way. I followed on a hunch and it looks like I got here just in time. Naruto, grab Sasuke and get back to the village, I will hold Mizuki here until you can send more help." When neither boy moved right away Iruka raised his voice and spoke sharply, "Move, this is a life or death scenario, put aside any irrelevant information that may have been revealed for later, right now you need to worry about surviving."
Spurred by the teacher's words, Naruto stood and ran to his friend. Sasuke didn't speak but he accepted Naruto's help and put his arm around the blonde's shoulder so they could move toward the village proper. As they took off into the forest they heard the sounds of a fight behind them. As they walked Naruto couldn't stay silent and eventually began talking,
"I am sorry, Sasuke,"
"Don't," Sasuke responded, "like sensei said, we won't worry about it until we have survived this."
As they walked the sound of the battle faded and all Naruto could think about was moving through the woods. Sasuke's injury made moving quickly dangerous. He had been stabbed in the thigh and while the wound wasn't inherently deadly, the knife was still inside and an accident could mean damaging the femoral artery which would lead to the boy bleeding out in seconds. So they hobbled along the ground and after a few minutes, they started to see lights from the village. Loud rustling caught their attention and the two boys brought out kunai in response. A feeling of relief came over them however when Iruka jogged out from the trees.
"Good job boys," Iruka said, "I was able to restrain Mizuki but I came after you to make sure you were safe. Give me the scroll Naruto, it will make it easier for you to carry Sasuke."
"Ok," Naruto said and began taking off the scroll, but Sasuke stopped him.
"Actually," Sasuke said, "you should stay unencumbered so that you can fight in case Mizuki comes back."
"Good diligence Sasuke," Iruka congratulated, "but your health comes first. Plus, with the village so close, I think we should worry about moving quickly as a top priority. So give me the scroll." His voice took a slight edge as he gave the command that made Naruto wary.
"I agree with Sasuke. You can trust me Iruka-sensei," Naruto said.
Iruka sighed, "Fine, I guess I will just kill you." His hand rose suddenly brandishing a kunai but his attack stopped when his weapon was knocked aside by a thrown knife. The Iruka fake jumped back and puffed back into Mizuki as a sweating Iruka limped out of the forest.
"Sorry boys, he got past me," Iruka said, his breathing uneven.
"I don't know how you are moving after getting hit by that poison, but why don't you just sit tight while I take care of the kids," Mizuki said nastily.
"Not a chance," Iruka responded.
"Argh, why are you working so hard to defend them. I can get Sasuke, but after everything Naruto has done, what he is." Mizuki shouted.
"Naruto is a promising young shinobi, and yes, he may have made mistakes in the past. But those don't define his future. He is filled with the potential to be a great force for good in the world, as long as he continues to grow he will be one of the greatest shinobi to walk the earth. The same is true for Sasuke, as I watched the children in the class we taught I was blown away by the bright future awaiting every one of them."
"Oh, shut up," Mizuki said exasperatedly, "this is what I could never stand about you, always so sentimental about the students when they aren't around, but so tough on them in class. You know what, I am done. Everyone dies, starting with you Iruka." Mizuki launched himself at the other teacher but his charge was interrupted when an orange missile rammed into his side.
Naruto stood resolutely, the scroll off his back, as he glared at the traitorous teacher. "If you try to touch Iruka-sensei or Sasuke again I will kill you." the boy growled.
"You are getting ahead of yourself," Mizuki said cockily, "you are fresh out of the academy, not even ten of you could take me on."
Naruto smirked, "Maybe, but what about 100."
Mizuki's smirk dropped as the boy brought his hands together in a cross-shaped hand sign.
"Shadow Clone Jutsu,"
The area filled with smoke that immediately cleared to reveal a sea of orange-clad blondes. Iruka's legs gave out from the shock but he was caught by a Naruto clone behind him. This shocked him, even more, when he realized that they were all solid copies. A clone next to Sasuke gave the boy a reassuring smile and a thumbs-up as he said,
"Hold tight, we will finish this soon."
Mizuki growled as a challenge to the army he now faced and the real Naruto, who stood in the same spot with his arms crossed, spoke,
"Now let's see how many of me it takes to beat you down. Attack!"
As soon as the call was made the group converged on the grey-haired chunin. He tried to jump away but two clones that had been in the trees nearby intercepted him and dragged him to the ground. Unable to escape, Mizuki began fighting like a cornered beast, a kunai in each hand striking out as fast as he could. But for every clone he popped, a new one took its place. He blocked a punch to his face only for another to hit him from a different angle. As he watched a clone charging from the front, another snuck up behind and kicked out his knees. In moments the man was overwhelmed and subdued. The real Naruto waded through the crowd and pulled out ninja wire to secure the man's hands and feet. And with that, the conflict was over.
In another cloud of smoke, the clones were all dismissed. Naruto walked quickly to Sasuke to check on his friend. As he approached the boy however Naruto felt anxiety build in him from the truth that Mizuki had spilled. He hesitantly opened his mouth but before he could speak Sasuke held out his fist. Naruto stared at it dumbfounded but soon felt tears begin to fill his eyes.
"Really?" Naruto asked
"Hn, I already knew we were rivals, and I can understand why you did it. I can't reliably say I wouldn't have made the same choice." Sasuke then looked into the other boy's eyes with a frown, "But, how about we tone back the whole it's ok to cheat thing, deal?"
"Deal." Naruto said with a watery laugh as he bumped fists with the other boy.
Helping the other boy to his feet, Naruto put his arm over his shoulder again and they walked to where their teacher sat.
"Sensei, are you ok? How can I help?" Naruto said urgently when they got to him.
"I'm ok for now Naruto, I took a general poison antidote as soon as I started to feel the effects but it would be best if I got to a hospital. Why don't you send one of those snazzy new clones you have to get help, Naruto," Iruka said.
"Oh, great Idea," The boy said before crossing his fingers and making a single clone appear. "Go get help," Naruto ordered.
"Yeah, yeah, I already know." The clone responded disrespectfully before running toward the village.
"Wow, my clones can be jerks," Naruto said.
"Now you know what we have to deal with," Sasuke quipped, leading to Naruto gasping indignantly.
Iruka laughed at the display of the two boys, grabbing their attention.
"Wow, Iruka-sensei, I didn't even know you could smile," Naruto said.
Iruka smiled ruefully and responded, "If I was hard on you, it is only because I knew you could do better." When he said that though, he stopped and his smile dropped somewhat, "I will say though Naruto, I am sorry if I was overly harsh with you when you started the academy, you reminded me a lot of myself, I didn't have my parents growing up either and acted as the class clown to get attention. I am not proud of my attitude from back then so I took that shame I felt at myself and pointed it at you. Seeing you with your friends, however, helped me to see past all that. I truly meant what I said about your potential"
"Thank you sensei." Naruto said genuinely, "you know I always liked you more than Mizuki, he was always so nice, it was creepy."
"I agree," Sasuke said stoically.
"Tell you boys what." Iruka said, "When this is all settled and I am feeling better, how about I treat you to something. You ever heard of a ramen place called Ichiraku?" Sasuke and Naruto's faces lit up at the name.
Suddenly Naruto's eyes blinked and he shook his head.
"I found gramps and told him where to find us," Naruto announced, before confusion filled his face, "Wait, no I didn't, the clone did. But, how do I know about it? Ah, my head hurts."
Sasuke and Iruka looked at him in worry and Iruka spoke,
"Naruto you got that technique out of the scroll right?" Naruto nodded in response and Iruka continued, "That scroll is filled with techniques that are forbidden because they can be dangerous to the wielder. Don't use it again until you can get more information on it, either from me or the Hokage."
"Ok," Naruto said.
A few minutes later, just as Naruto mentioned a team of ANBU appeared. They took Mizuki into custody and ferried Iruka and Sasuke to the hospital for treatment. Naruto was surrounded and taken directly to the Hokage who was sitting in his office with a grave look on his face. Naruto was unable to meet his eyes, shame filling him from being manipulated by Mizuki.
"You realize that this is a grave scenario do you not?" Hiruzen said.
Naruto nodded his head meekly and spoke, "I am sorry sir, I let my feelings control me and that led me to play along with Mizuki's plan to get the scroll."
"Naruto," the man spoke sagely, "it is not wrong to follow your emotions. They can give you great strength and help you live true to yourself. But you must have them in check so that they do not override your reason." The old man paused so that his words could sink into the boy in front of him. "Now, these could be grounds of revoking your shinobi status, but given this is your first day on the job we will be lenient. You will stay a shinobi but your ranking in the exams will be cut to the lowest possible passing score. You will be the dead last in your class."
Naruto's head shot up and he looked at the Hokage in awe. He would be able to be on a team with Sasuke and Elsa after all. His heart was filled with gratitude and he was about to cry out in thanks until the Hokage interrupted him.
"Don't look at me like that Naruto. That story Mizuki gave you about the tradition of pairing the dead last with the top students is bull crap. You would have ended up on a team with them anyway, there is no way we would disrupt the kind of synergy that you three have shown throughout your time at the academy by splitting you three up."
Naruto's stomach dropped.
"Let this be a lesson to you Naruto, you must always look past what is obvious. Now go get some sleep, team placements take place tomorrow and I am sure you will have your handsful begging for the forgiveness of a certain young lady for missing your celebration party."
"Yes, sir," Naruto said dejectedly, as he made his way out of the building. Already he dreaded facing his best friend and crush tomorrow.
