Author's notes
Here we have the next chapter, and just a quick note. I am going to continue to gender flip certain characters because I would find it weird that in a world where female Astartes are a thing there wouldn't be any in prominent roles or ranks. I will try to keep this to characters where this would make the most sense… those in my mind at least.
Also this chapter is a bit short and doesn't have much in it. Next chapter however will have the team selecting test and so that should be good. Also someone please help me figure out a Team name for the Primarchs. We got C and C for Corvus Corax, M and A for Magnus, L and R for Leman, and L and A for Lorgar.
"Wow! It's so big!" Ruby shouted in joy as they walked off the blimp carrier and onto the stone paved road that led to Beacon. It's towers rising high into the sky, high walls that contained hidden and gilded gun emplacements. It truly was a sight out of a fairy tale… well… a highly gothic and militarized fairy tale. "Isn't this great Corvus… Corvus?"
"He's gone." Yang chuckled as she knew it would be impossible to keep track of a boy that could literally ease his presence from everyone's mind. It's wasn't very fun for her to have to set up her Scroll at the bathroom door every take she took a shower for the last week. Though to his credit he never tried to peep… and Yang wasn't sure if she should feel respect for that or insulted that he didn't. "But come on, forget the gloomy birdy boy and feel excited. You're at Beacon!"
Before Ruby could say anything more Yang took her by the arm and dragged her down the walkway to the castle on the cliff. All around them were the next batch of Aspirants, those that hoped that they could join the choirs of vengeful angels of the God-Emperor. The Adeptus Astartes. The two sisters walked in the crowd of teens until it finally started to disperse as they came to the garden courtyard that sat at the front of the castle entrance.
"Yang, you don't need to…OOH! That guy has fire sword, and that girl has a collapsible staff." Ruby forgot all about her social anxiety for the moment as she drooled over the various weapons that had been brought to Beacon. "And that guy has… just an iron mace?"
"Ruby, don't you think you should focus on the people holding the weapons?" Yang asked trying and likely failing at getting her weapon nut of a sister to try and be a bit more social.
"Yeah but people are… people. With emotions and feeling and a bunch of other stuff that I just don't understand. Weapons on the other hand, I just need to look at a blueprint or take it apart to know how they work." Ruby nervously explained as she pulled her hood over her head. She had always had trouble with interacting with people. Even when she was little and in primary school she would just huddle away from the other kids. It wasn't until Signal that she even had a friend.
"Well what about all your fellow mini Salamanders back at Signal or even Corvus." Yang said as she pulled Ruby's hood back off. "You can make new friends, I know you can."
"But why would I need to make new friends when I have you?" Ruby asked with a very assured look on her face, like everything was right with world so long as that statement was true.
"Well…" Then everything broke. "… you see my friends are actually already here so byyyye." Yang vanished into the crowd of people with a bunch of people Ruby vaguely recognized as people from Yang's grade in Signal. The speed and suddenness of her sister's leaving however caused Ruby to spin around in confusion and worry.
"Wait! Yang! Where are we supposed to go? To our dorms? Do we even have dorms? I don't know what I'm doing." Ruby then fell back as she tripped on a luggage tram pulled by a Servitor and caused the various white cases on the tram to fall to the ground.
"What are you doing?!" Ruby heard someone shout and looked up to see a pale girl in all white standing over her and looking very upset. "Do you have any idea how much damage you could have done?!" The girl said pointing a finger as she accused Ruby.
"Uh… no?" Ruby said assuming that the luggage that she had fallen into belonged to this girl and absentmindedly handed one of them to her.
"This is Dust, pure quality and refined by the Schnee Dust company. My family's company produces the best Dust in all of Remnant and this is best that they produce. And…" All the while the pale girl was shouting at Ruby she was shaking a vial of Red Dust, causing a s small cloud of it to form. Ruby wasn't really paying attention to what the Schnee girl was saying as started to sneeze, she froze in time. The angry girl didn't seem to notice but did notice when she was rudely bumped into by a tall red haired girl with bandages covering her arms. "Hey, watch where you're going!"
"I do, I just don't pay attention to the trash along the way." The girl said offhandedly and with the most uncaring voice anyone could give. The Schnee girl sputtered a bit having never had anyone speak to her like that. But before she could give a full retort the girl was walking away and undid the time-lock on Ruby, causing a small Dust explosion due to her sneeze. Fire enveloped the two and the open case of Dust vials fell to the ground with several of them rolling away.
"Look what you've done! This was the exact thing I was warning you about you dolt!" Ruby didn't really know what was happening, one second she was about to sneeze and then the world just… became all frigid and like she was trapped in a glacier of ice but without the cold. Then the next she actually sneezed and there was fire, ice and electricity and now the crabby girl was yelling at her some more. But at least now Ruby understood why she was being yelled at.
"I'm really-really sorry." Ruby said trying to just make whatever it was that was happening stop.
"Why are you even here anyway? You are too young to even think about becoming a Astartes, you could die you know. This isn't just some Guard bootcamp or a normal combat school, this is Beacon. We're here to became super human. So watch where you're going." At this point Ruby was getting fed up with all the social stuff and this girl yelling at her. She had every right to be here, headmaster Ozpin said so.
"Hey, I said I was sorry princess."
"It's heiress actually." Said a new voice as another girl came forward, this one dressed in black and white with amber eyes and a black bow on her head. In her hand was one of the vials of Dust that had rolled away. "Wiess Schnee, heiress to the Schnee Dust company. One of the largest producers of raw and refined Dust in all of the Imperium."
"Finally, some recognition." Wiess said very pleased with herself that someone knew who she was.
"The same company that has been myriad in controversy for their labor practices, connections with heretical groups, and their ongoing feud with the Adeptus Mechanicus." Wiess did not take that add on very well meanwhile Ruby was just giggling at the sight. Wiess however seemed to not find this argument worth it and with a huff walked away with her bags being gathered by her attending Servitors.
"I promise that I will make this up to you!" Ruby called out after Wiess but was summarily ignored. "Well at least I'm not the only one having a rough first day." Ruby muttered to herself before remembering that there as someone else here. "So what's… oh…" Ruby's hopes were deflated as the bow wearing girl was also walking away. Ruby dropped down to the ground and then fell onto her back in utter defeat. As she was wondering if she was doomed to loneliness here at Beacon, someone's shadow crossed her. She looked up and saw a blond boy holding out a hand.
"Hi, I'm Jaune." Ruby smiled and took his hand.
"Ruby." She introduced herself as she stood up but then recognized who this guy was. "Aren't you one of the guys that threw up on the ship."
Corus waded through the crowd of people and then turned out of it to one of the side walkways of the courtyard. He felt a little bad for leaving Ruby all on her own but he had a mission to complete. One of vengeance, one of sheer pettiness that it couldn't be ignored. As he had seen someone on the blimp ride that had the unmistakable features of someone he despised.
"Payback time… kinda." Corvus used his Wraithslip to explore the Beacon courtyard, completely aware that he would be tracked the entire time. This was Beacon, the idea that anyone could sneak their way in so easily was impossible. But right now he wasn't hiding from Ozpin or the Astartes, he just wanted the jump on his prey. And soon enough he found it.
"What are you doing here mutant, this is the school where we learn to kill scum like you." Corvus hid in plain sight, standing in the middle of the small alcove that he had found his target in. He could recognize the noble features and ginger hair from a mile away, that of a Winchester.
"Maybe we should start a little early." Corvus didn't care about the other three boys that was in the Winchester's gang. They all were surrounding a Wulfen Aspirant to be, who looked very bored and not all afraid of the bullies. They didn't seem to notice the danger coming from either the invisible boy behind them or the feral wolf in front of them. The Winchester however had a look of smug entitlement as he pulled back a fist to start the beating. Only to stop in his tracks as he felt a finger tap on his shoulder.
"What do you wa-" He didn't get to finish as he was punched in the face by Corvus.
"Cardin!" One of the other bullies shouted but it all quickly descended into a brutal beat down, but instead it was the would be bullies that got their asses handed to them. it didn't take long for the fight to end with Corvus and the Wulfen standing on to of the four bullies.
"Ha! Take that you privileged fuck." Corvus shouted in victory as he kicked Cardin in the face. He then turned to the Wulfen that he had fought alongside. The two stared at each other, the wind blew between them as they narrowed their eyes. Judging the other to find anything lacking. Then the moment ended with the two clasping hands in a classic bro shake.
"Now that was a right scrap, ya got balls grease ball." The Wulfen laughed loudly.
"You're not bad yourself mut." Corvus laughed back as he they hopped off the pile of degenerates.
"So why'd ya just up and help me like that? Can't be just feelin' helpful now right?"
"Eh, the ginger's brother or cousin or whatever was a cellblock head and made my life hell. This was just some nice revenge." Corvus admitted, it was also just because like many in the Under Hive he hated the guts of all the Spire Nobles like the Winchesters. Living their privileged lives of comfort while millions of people starved and barely had anything to their names. "Corvus Corax." Corvus introduced himself as they left the alcove.
"Leman of the Russ." Leman smiled a fanged grin as the two continued to laugh and joke at the expense of the soft bellied bullies they had just beaten up.
"Listen, air sickness is not uncommon… a lot of people have it." The blond boy that had given a hand to Ruby said as he tried to defend himself as he walked with Ruby through the gardens. The serene tranquility of this place did not match the purpose by which Astartes were trained for.
"I'm sorry but if your going to be regularly dropped from airships your going to need to get over that." Ruby giggled as she pictured the unlucky Astartes would be next this guy in a Drop-Pod.
"Yeah well I doubt many people are going to be happy to work with someone that Dust properly, probably going to blow up a whole armory dump." He retorted making Ruby sputter a bit at her earlier snafu.
"Hey that explosion was totally not my fault." Ruby said trying to defend herself but the boy just waved her off playfully.
"Well the name's Jaune Arc, short'sweet… ladies love it." Jaune said with a innocent but undeserved confidence.
"Do they?" Ruby asked and immediately cut through the front that Jaune was trying to put up.
"They will… or at least I hope they will. My mom always says… never mind." Jaune began but stopped once he remembered that it was never cool to bring up what a boy's mother told him. Thankfully the lackluster response of Ruby awkwardly laughing was interrupted. As a would be Aspirant like them, stumbled into Jaune while trying to operate his Scroll. "Eay!"
"Whoa… you really have terrible luck today." Ruby said as Jaune and the new comer tried to immediately detangle themselves from each other. They both popped back up and after dusting themselves off, looked at each other, silently agreed to never speak of this again, and then stepped apart.
"I'm sorry, I was trying to understand how to find the map on this Scroll thing and wasn't paying attention to where I was going." The Aspirant said as he held up a rather old model of Scroll. But that kinda fit with his look, that of a rural kid having his first day in the big Hive-City. Shaved head, very basic and well used farm clothes that weren't all the same size with the pants being a bit too big and the vest and shirt a tad small on him, and only a iron mace for a weapon. The only other article on him that was notable was the bound leather prayer book strapped to his side.
"Really? Here." Ruby took the Scroll from the teen and brought up the very basic map it had installed on it. "I used to have this model for my first Scroll, the newer ones are a lot better."
"God-Emperor bless your kindness. I'm still not used to all this technology." The boy said as he repeated what Ruby did for himself so he could do it again. "My name is Lorgar Aurelian, it is nice to meet such virtuous souls also on the path to become the God-Emperor's avenging angels."
"Hehe… yeah." Ruby said not really feeling comfortable with the religious talk. But there was something she was focusing on. "Soooo… is that your weapon?" Ruby asked as she pointed to the iron mace hanging on Lorgar's hip.
"Yes it is, I have dubbed it Illuminarum as I use it to burn my soul's light against the darkness of this world." Lorgar said reverently, omitting the fact that it had been most recently been used to kill dozens of people in his cleanse of Vharadesh. He did not think that such a act was worth mentioning. "I have used it many times to kill Grimm that have threatened my family's homestead."
"Really? Just that?" Jaune asked and Lorgar gave a friendly nod of confirmation. "Well that makes me feel better about what I got." Jaune said as he pulled out a simple sword from a sheath which also unfolded into a shield. Both were elegantly designed but appeared both simplistic in nature.
"Ooo… so do they do anything?" Ruby asked knowing that all sorts of weapons of Remnant could do many things. As a weapon nut herself, she knew that some of the most masterfully crafted ones looked the most simple.
"Uh… no. The shield collapses so when I need to carry it… its uh… smaller."
"Wouldn't it weigh the same?"
"Yeah it does."
"I think it is fine weapon of an Astartes." Lorgar said though he was very amused by the duo's act and wondered if they had prepared it prior. "Sometimes the most inspiring vision is the most simple. Devoid of the gilded pomp of arrogance and beautiful in in minimalism." Jaune perked up at the words that the new comer gave and felt a little more pride in carrying his family's sword and shield to Beacon. The two boys then looked to Ruby, they had shown theirs now she should show hers.
"Uh… right." Ruby felt a little self conscious after what Lorgar had just said, but over came it at the chance to show off her pride and joy. So with a flourish she unlocked Crescent Rose and finished off with a badass pose that she had practiced several days to nail perfectly.
"Whoa… is that a scythe?" Jaune and Lorgar both backed away from the massive and complex mech-shift weapon that did not look right on such a smaller girl.
"It is also a high impact sniper rifle." She got back blank stares from both boys. "It is also a gun. It's a bit much I know, even when I was making the Forge Master was freaking out." She could still remember the shouting match between Signal's Forge Master and her Uncle Qrow, meanwhile Ruby just sat on the floor hugging her masterpiece. Personally she blamed the fact that the Forge Master was a Iron Hands vet rather than a Salamander.
"That is quite more than a simple weapon." Lorgar said with Jaune nodding in agreement.
"Well it's just that I get so excited when I'm in the workshop, surrounded by the nuts and bolts. All I have to focus on is my baby right here." Ruby said as she hugged her weapon in a not so normal way. Both of the boys looked at each other and silently decided they didn't just see that as they had zero other friends here at Beacon. Ruby snapped out of her moment with Crescent Rose and remembered that they were on a schedule. "Hey guys, do you know where the auditorium is?"
"Partner-Friend! It is soooooo good to see you once more!"
"AHHHH! Vulkan! You are crushing my spine! AGAIN!"
"I don't think I will ever not find that funny." Horus chuckled as he watched two of her former teammates embrace. It was mostly Vulkan doing the hugging but someone needed to get Konrad to stop sulking in the corner. The Primarch of the Luna Wolves then gave a blissful sigh as he remembered that they had duties to attend to. "Vulkan, Konrad, come now… the ceremony is about to start."
"Do they really need all of us here every time they start a new Academy Year?" Horus' smile faded as he heard the War Hounds Primarch Khârn complain as they all started their way toward the Beacon auditorium. While Horus himself found it a bit tedious, it was also tradition. He could remember fondly of his first academy days back at Haven, seeing all the Primarchs assembled was a humbling and unforgettable experience.
"Hush now mutt, I'm looking forward to this new crop of Aspirants." Ahzek snapped back as they started their way out of the meeting room they had been gathering in. Eighteen of the most powerful men and women of the Imperium, the Primarchs of the Astartes Legions. They all were legends o their own right having accomplished to ascend to the highest rank a Astartes could hope to hold. It was a small and excusive club that few ever had the privilege of being witnessed to when they were all together.
"Enough with the shouting, I have a killer hangover and it's not helping." Qrow grumbled as he held his head, hoping that the pills he had taken would alleviate some of the throbbing in his skull. He knew he shouldn't have drank so much last night, the girls would be seeing him today and he had to at least try to put on his best face.
"Well its your own fault for indulging in your bad habits. But what can one expect from a drunken magpie like you." The others all groaned as the bickering between Qrow and Senguinius was starting early today.
"Both of ya shut up, we don't need to have the kiddes see us howling at each other." Logan Grimnar, one of the oldest Primarchs among them, scolded the two avian affinity Astartes. Both of them grumbled a bit more but the others sighed in relief that this time the arguing was taken down quickly.
Yes indeed, a very exclusive sight to behold. And for good reason, because if the Imperium knew just how dysfunctional and at each other's throats the Primarchs really were… untold chaos would follow.
After awhile Ruby, Jaune and Lorgar all were able to find the auditorium… eventually. It was already filled with hopeful Aspirants, the crowd was already thick and hard to pass through.
"Ruby! I saved you a spot!" Ruby perked up as she heard her sister yell over the crowd.
"There's my sister, sorry you guys… I'll see you after." Ruby called back as she ran off toward her sister. Jaune quietly bemoaned the loss of the nice quirky girl, Lorgar on the other hand just waved goodbye serenely as he focused on the majesty of Beacon. Ruby meanwhile efficiently teleported to her sister's side, miffed and bitter over the blond's sudden abandoning of her.
"So how's your first day going so far little sister?" Yang said completely ignoring her little prank/attempt for Ruby to make some new friends.
"Oh it was sooo great after you just left me all alone and then I exploded." Ruby snapped, her arms crossed and her body standing off with Yang's.
"Yikes, meltdown already?"
"No! I mean I literally exploded after… I don't really remember anything before that but I know there was a lot of fire and I think some ice…" Ruby trailed off as her memory of the incident was a little foggy. What with all the yelling and the weird feeling she had before the boom.
"Are you being sarcastic?" Yang found it absolutely adorkable when Ruby tried to use sarcasm when she was really bad at it.
"I wish, I tripped over some crabby girl's luggage, she yelled at me, I sneezed, then I exploded, then she yelled at me some more and I just really wanted her to stop."
"You!" Wiess accused from behind Ruby who immediately leapt into her sister's arms.
"It's happening again!" Ruby cried as she retreated into the safety of her sister.
"Oh throne you really exploded." Yang said now concerned over what her sister might have gotten herself into. Normally she would perfectly happy to comfort Ruby like this but now was not the time for that.
"It was an accident! It was an accident!" Ruby said as Yang reluctantly let her down. "What's this." Ruby said as the other girl pushed a pamphlet with a carton Emperor giving a thumbs up with one hand and holding a Dust crystal in the other. The words Dust, the Emperor's blood on Remnant and how to handle it on the top.
"The Schnee Dust Company is not responsible for any injures or damages sustained while operating a Schnee Dust Company product. Although not mandatory, the Schnee family highly encourages our customers to read and familiarize themselves with this easy to follow to Dust application and practices in the field." The words zoomed past Ruby and Yang as the girl said it like she had been trained to give that speech all her life. Both of them just had a glazed over look in their eyes as they tried to follow what was being said. "If you really want to make this up to me then read this and never speak to me again."
"Listen, it sounds like everyone just got off on the wrong foot. Why not start all over again?"
"Right. Hello Wiess, I'm Ruby."
"And I'm Leman!" Before any of the girls understood what was happening, a new boy with tribalistic clothes and a feral look popped in out of nowhere. "And you all-"
"Hey you're the other guy that threw up on the air ride." Ruby said before Leman could finish his poor and simple attempt to hit on them all. This reaction pretty much turned Leman into a human sized kicked puppy. This was where Corvus came in to give a hand to Leman's shoulder.
"I told you man don't try it… though I was expecting the blond to shoot you down."
"And just where have you been bird boy." Yang countered as while she did leave Ruby, she at least did so without just ghosting her. Corvus just up and vanished on the two of them without even a hint as to if they would see him again.
"I was on a mission of vengeance." Corvus replied seriously and before Yang had a chance to respond, the lights dimmed a little and one of the side stage doors opened. First out walked Headmaster Ozpin, Vice-Headmistress Goodwitch, and then someone that made everyone gulp… a Commissar. But who followed them was what got everyone's attention, the Primarchs of the Astartes Legions. All of them took the stage and stood in numerical line to their Legion.
Firstly was the Primarch of the Dark Angles legion, Sar Luther. Considered one of the most brilliant tacticians of history, he was one of the older Primarchs but still lead his Legion to the fullest. The Dark Angels were considered to be one of the frontier Legions, often acting as the spearhead and the shield to settlements outside the safe borders of the Imperium. Both acting as the frontline soldiers and then the military police in the newly established territory to lock it down.
To his right was the Primarch of the Gray Knights, the recently out of retirement Geronitan. He was by far the most out of place among those there. Having only come back to duty due to the disappearance of his successor. While far from his prime, the eldest living Primarch was still a grizzled vetren of many wars and a capable leader in these relatively peaceful times. Even contending with the fact as his legion was the dedicated Grimm Daemon combat legion.
Up next was Lucius Durand, a great woman loved by all in the Imperium. She was considered to be the finest duelist of all the Legions, though many consisted that title. She led her legion in staunch adherence to their reverence of perfection and cultural works, aiming to not only be fine warriors but also poets and artist. Though her refusal to see more modern works as art has garnered some controversy.
To Lucius's right was Perturabo Economos, Priamrch of the Iron Warriors. He stood tall and above everything going around him, looking like he'd rather be anywhere but there. Both him and his legion had a reputation for never enjoying life and simply having a single mind for war and grim reality of it. As it was their duty to break the strongest Grimm Nests, Ork Fortresses, or Drukhai beachheads, no one really minded this outlook.
Standing smaller than most was Qrow Branwen, Primarch of the White Scars. Even he wasn't sure how he got the job, he assumed it was some backroom deal among the power players of the Legions. But thankfully the White Scars was one of the most independently minded of the Legions and this mattered little. Most often they were attached to other Imperium forces rather than performing their own military operations.
Next to the Primarch of the White Scars is someone probably equally drunk but can still function as a Primarch is Logan Grimnar. Often referred to as Grandpa Grimnar by his legion and the children of the Imperium, he is also a favorite among the people for his many showings of loyalty and care of the common man. The Storm Wolves were some for the fiercest fighters the Imperium had, often leading the charge into some of the most inhospitable places of Remnant.
To the right of Grimnar was Rogal Dorn, he is Dorn and he will forever be Dorn. The bluntly spoken and humor lacking Primarch of the Imperial Fists. Known throughout the lands as a master of fortification and equally for his absolute honesty and complete lack on a funny bone in his body. The Imperial Fists stood bravely atop the walls and bastions of humanity's borders, ready to defend them to the last man or woman.
Sulking next to Dorn was Konrad Curze, the terrifying final judge of the Imperium. For him there was only justice and the cold blade of the will to enact it. Him and the Night Lords Legion worked to seek out the worst criminal elements that threatened humanity from the inside and carefully and brutally remove them. Through fear and horror they would keep humanity's scum in line.
And perhaps next to the undoubtedly scariest and feared Primarch was the most beloved, Sanguinius Baal. She would be counted as a woman loved by all in the Imperium for her bravery, valor, and sheer charismatic presence. A feat even more impressive due to the fact she was a mutant, her angelic wings captivating any who see them. A symbol for Abhumans, mutants, and women everywhere, Sanguinius proved to the world that nothing is impossible so long as you had the drive to do it.
To the right of the actual angel was Gabriel Santor, Primarch of the Iron Hands legion. His faith and loyalty to the will and vision of the Emperor was nothing less than zealous only tempered by the long years he has lived. His legion acting in close work with the Tech-Priests of Mars was on the forefront of development of new weapons of war and deployment of them.
The eleventh member of the Primarchs stood next, master of the Ghosts of Sol was not in attendance. The legion was going through a period of infighting and debate over their future and lacked a proper leader for the time. The honorable and poetic Astartes of the Ghost of Sol were often seen as peacekeepers, diligent and fair aides to leaders. Excelling in personal combat and inspiring mortal men into acts of heroism.
After the next empty space was Khârn, not so much Primarch but leader of the War Hounds. The legion knows who their Primarch is, and Khârn is not him. But he will stand in until the true Primarch comes home… not that he enjoyed the fact he was a placeholder for many in his Legion. But the stubborn legion would not change once it made up its mind. The renowned assault Legion would only accept the strongest and most fearless among their ranks as their Primarch and while Khârn had such traits in spades, it was not enough to eclipse his better.
Roboute Guilliman stood next and had perfectly crafted image as befitted any politician. Primarch of the Ultramarines, he exemplified their values of discipline and adherence to tradition. The golden boy of Macragge sat there with his statesmen smile waiting for his turn to speak. Because by the God-Emperor he would speak.
Calas Typhon, the next man in the line of Primarchs. The Primarch of the Death Guard, protectors against viral attack and contamination, that long since become a war against the Grimm God Nurgle. Typhon himself did not look amused to be out in public, if anyone could even tell how he felt with him wearing his armor at all times.
Next to Typhon was Ahzek Ahriman, looking irritated and bored. He was not the most liked of men but he did his job well and was no slouch when it came to combat. His Dust Golems had won him praise from even the more combat oriented Primarchs. His Legion were the mystic and the ones that researched the powers of Aura, the sorceries of Mankind, and warded against the fel powers of the Grimm Daemon.
Then there was Horus. The Warmaster of the Legions, second only to the High Lords of Remnant. He was by far the most famous of the Primarchs and for good reason. He had crushed Ork warbosses, killed many greater Grimm daemons, and had even killed a Grimm Prince that had come calling on Mistral. He was loved by the people and the soldiers.
To Horus right was Erebus, anointed and blessed by two Ecclesiarchs he was the highest authority of faith outside the Adeptus Ministorum. To the Imperium he was the on the front lines of cleansing this world of the taint of the Grimm and the spreading of the God Emperor's faith to all. There were countless stories of him and his closest Word Bearers traveling to the Blighted Lands and… well everyone assumed killed Grimm as what else could a Astartes do there.
Next to the most zealous man in the Imperium was perhaps the friendliest one, Vulkan Nocturne. The man's warm smile completely offset his coal like pitch black skin and almost burning red eyes. He was well loved throughout the Imperium as a great making of weapons and friend of the people. The Salamanders Legion was one of craftsmen and forgers, those that loved to put their soul into what they made and then use those very weapons the foes of humanity.
Last in the line of Primarchs was Gherith Arendi of the Raven Guard. A dour man that rarely left the shadows of his work and even when he did barely showed his face in public. As the Raven Guard were committed to fight the enemies of mankind in the most unconventional ways., sabotage, guerrilla warfare, disruption, and so on. The shadows of behind enemy lines were not without eyes when the Raven Guard were sent to the battlefield.
The last Legion's Primarch was in the public light even less than the last one in line. The Alpha Legion by its very nature was never seen by the public. The masses of the Imperium knew of the name and had a vague idea of what it did but that was all. The rest was speculation and conspiracy, the only thing that was known about the Primarch was their codename of Hydra.
"I'll keep this brief so that the other speakers may go on with their speeches." Ozpin spoke into the mic. "You have traveled here for today in search of knowledge and power… to hone your craft and ascend to greater things. And when you are finished you plan to dedicate your life to the service of the Emperor, the Imperium and the people within it. But I look amongst you and all I see is wasted energy. In need of purpose… direction. Those feelings are a cancer to Astartes, and hopefully by the end of your journey here, you will have found a direction that will be a cure and not catalyst. But always remember, it is you that takes that first step… no matter what direction that may be in." No one in the crowd really knew how to react to that speech and just sort of gave a weak clap just because he was the headmaster. Moments passed and the man that had been with Ozpin and Goodwitch stepped forward.
Everyone froze as they now finally were able to get a clear view of the man, and it was only due to the presence of the Primarchs that his fame had not gotten to them all immediately. As standing in front of all of them was the Hero of the Imperium Ciaphas Cain. The retired Commissar still stood strong and proud with only a few gray hairs to mark his age… though that only added to his appeal many would say. He exuded a aura of confidence and absolute authority that wasn't based entirely on fear like most commissars.
"All right now…" His tone was deep and had a slight ascent that no one could quite place. "… I'm sure many of you already know this but my name is Ciaphas Cain. I am Beacon's resident Disciplinary Officer, so it will be me that will be dealing any… rambunctious." He gave a calming chuckle but also did so as he leaned his hand on the bolt pistol on his hip. The mixed message was clear to many, that he wasn't going to be a push over but wasn't going to run them into the ground. "Tonight you all will be sleeping in the great hall, as per tradition. And I will be on the look out for any trouble makers. Any rule breaking will result in disciplinary action and possibly barring you from taking part in tomorrow's team placement. Now before you all leave…" Cain had this masked flinch that barely anyone saw before continuing. "Primarch Guilliman wishes to speak a few words." The moment he said that Primarchs Khârn, Ahriman, Perturabo, Konrad, Qrow all got up and walked off stage while most of the others slouched back in frustration.
"Why'z da angry humie making us gitz the Snotlings again?" Gorkiee, one of Beacon's two ork janitors asked as him and his brother Morkadum, crawled through the bowels of Beacon with a large sack of fighting Snotlings behind them.
"Because idit, we'ze gotz new little humies to toughen up to mak'me into right humie nobs." Morkadum replied as he stuffed his arm into a open pipe and after a bit of wiggling grabbed ahold of something that had a bit of a kick to it. "I fink I got one!"
"Get-It- Get-It- Get-It- Get-It!"
"OI! Don't yell into ma ear when I'ze got it!"
"Ya gonna lose it again!"
"I'ze got it!"
"Er' let me!" The two Orks struggled for awhile as they both tried to grab ahold of whatever it was that was in the large pipe. Eventually succeeded but what they pulled out wasn't a frightened little green snotling but a snarling, red Squig. "Er' you have it!"
"It's like a big old slumber party." With that yang fell back on her sleeping back to Ruby's. Every one of the would be Aspirants were all gathered in the Great Hall, everyone was in various states of dress… a lot of guys were showboating. However nothing was happening due to the Commissar's direct warning and the fact every now and then a Servo-Skull would float into the hall.
"I don't think dad would approve all the boys." Ruby said as she was trying to write a letter, she knew that she could just call her friends back at Signal but this felt more personal. They weren't even really close friends, just the other weapon geeks. But then suddenly she was pulled up into a protective bear hug by her sister.
"Don't worry rubes, your big sister won't let any of those nasty boys touch you." Ruby wiggled her way out of her sister's grasp and landed back down on her sleeping bag. Ruby stuck her tongue out at Yang before going back to her letter. "So what do you having going on here?"
"Just a letter for the gang back at Signal. I told them I would tell them all about Beacon and stuff…" Ruby trailed off as she didn't really wanna mention the glares she had gotten on her last day at Signal. The news that she was going to be going to Beacon early got around and people weren't exactly happy.
"Aw… that's so cuuute-" Yang joked but got a pillow to the face for it. Even if Ruby still wasn't feeling all that well about how she left Signal she wasn't about to let Yang have her way with it.
"Shut up, you got to take everyone you knew to Beacon. All I have is you and Corvus and he's…" They both looked over to see Corvus and Leman playing cards and having fun with several other guys. "… doing surprisingly well. I don't know anyone else."
"What about Jaune and Lorgar, they seem… nice." Yang didn't really have much to go on with those two, only that Ruby had mentioned them.
"Pretty sure Wiess is a negative friend and you know how I'm with religious people." Ruby replied and Yang tried to make a comment but knew it probably wouldn't work. The thing with Wiess, Yang would chalk that one up to differing personalities and bad timing. The Lorgar thing was more complicated, as Ruby had a hard time with faith since Summer died.
"Look, it's only been one day. Part of Astartes training is about brotherhood and sisterhood with your fellow Astartes. We are all in this together and you'll find people that you can fight besides, everyone does." Yang knew that Ruby hadn't gotten some of the more philosophical lessons taught at Signal that he later years did. There was honestly a lot of important things that Ruby had missed out and it worried Yang that Headmaster Ozpin might have jumped the bolter with her sister. But then she remembered that lots of odd cases come into Beacon and the other schools and not just those from the Pre-Academy schools like Signal. "Trust me Ruby, tomorrow will be different."

A Guide to the Imperium
Chapter Five – The Adeptus Astartes
The mighty Avenging Angels of the God-Emperor are humanity's greatest defense against the Grimm and all other threats mankind faces. Genetically engineered super soldiers, created though rigorous training and the implementation of the Astartes Gene-Seed they are unparalleled in the art of war. They are Humanity's sword and shield in the Age of the Imperium.
First created by the God Emperor of Mankind during his short reign over the burgeoning Imperium, the Astartes were small in number those days but changed the tides of battle. Through his utmost mastery of science and sorcery alike the God-Emperor created the Astarte Gene-Seed, a set of organs that when implanted into a mortal human over a period of time transforms them into a super human known as Astartes. By the end of the Age of Strife and the final day of the Great Crusade the Astartes numbered in the hundreds.
But now they are in the thousands, the exact numbers are unclear due to both the chaos of war and the classified nature of some of the legions' work. However, the High Lords of Terra claim that within the next decade the Imperium shall have ten thousand of these might warriors ready to defend and expand the borders of the Imperium. Twenty Legions now stand, each dedicated their own duty or style of warfare.
Typically the implementation of the Gene-Seed takes four years if without complication. This is done at one of the four Astarte Academies. During their time at said institution, Aspirants are partnered up and placed onto teams of four. This is to develop bonds of comradery that will last beyond the time when they will be separated into the Legion that accepts them. They be given their Gene-Seed, taught the needed knowledge and skills a Astartes will need, and trained to becoming lethal fighting machines. During their last year, they will being to apply to the twenty legions. Some are scouted and immediately begin their Legion Training while other will have to prove themselves to their Legion of choice. Often it comes down to the most front line Legion to take on those that can't find a place among the others.
Reviews
Shinobi scribe of the kage - He gave it back, only the money was taken and that was just to force Corvus into accepting
EL KAHN DE KAHN - I think you misunderstood my last response. I hope this chapter clarifies things. The Legions are a mix of how they were in 30k and the standard codex style. Warhound Titans are decently used, Reavers are only used sparingly and the Imperium only have one Warlord. Fuck no on Imperator as that thing would be broken as fuck on a single world setting.
H20 Ferrum Dominus - Yes, the Orks are in their usual tribes. Its the Blood Axes that work with Imperials.
Eltyr - Yes, I have to try and balance the 40k Grimdark with RWBY's light hearted comedy, this will get easier as time goes on and the plot grows up as it did with RWBY. Megan just really hates Schnees... understandably. Lorgar at this point is innocent religious country boy in the big city. There is another Primarch team but they don't go to Beacon. I will let that simmer for now.
J - it is a simple short sword, nothing too fancy.
