Once Quincy was able to get around on his own, he knew he had a mission. And the people around him did not try to stop him. When Quincy arrived at his destination, he was not too surprised to see Dr. Erin Hunnicutt in the lobby of the San Francisco Medical Examiner's office.
Quincy asked Erin, "The accident was bothering you too?"
Erin replied, "Yes, I found out the name of the au pair that died was Marie Dubois from Paris, but not much else. I've been trying to get in to see her before she is transported to the funeral home for preparations for her journey home to France, but I can't get past the receptionist."
Quincy looked up and could see that the woman at the front desk was definitely no nonsense. She looked to be in her early 40's, Quincy guessed a career civil servant, a type that the good doctor has had plenty of experience dealing with.
"Madge," Quincy said, reading the receptionists name badge, "I'm Dr. Quincy from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office and my colleague and I need to examine Marie Dubois..."
Madge cut Quincy off, "... listen doctor, I don't know how they do things in L.A., but we have procedures here in the rest of California. Unless I see a court order or authorization, you aren't going to see Miss Dubois."
Erin tried again, "Please, ma'am, we were in the car that Marie hit. Dr. Quincy is well a well regarded medical examiner throughout California and the country. We feel we owe it to Marie to find out what actually happened."
Madge softened a bit and quietly said, "I'm aware of Dr. Quincy's reputation, but I was not aware of his personal connection to the case. I normally would say it would mean my job if I let you back there, but to be honest I've been working for the city for over 20 decades- at most it may mean a reassignment. You've probably got about a half hour before the M.E decides to grace us with his presence."
Quincy exclaimed, "Thank you!"
Quincy and Erin found Marie Dubois' body. The Los Angeles Medical Examiner noted the Y incision. Looking over the autopsy notes, it appeared that Marie had been given a through post-mortem Quincy did a visual examination of the far-young-body in front of him.
"Wait a minute!" Quincy exclaimed
Erin asked, "What is it?"
Quincy instructed, "Erin, open your shirt a bit."
Erin shrugged and started to lift her shirt up. Quincy was a doctor after all.
Shocked, Quincy corrected himself, "No, I meant just uncover your right collarbone."
Erin did as instructed, and Quincy uncovered his left collarbone. "Notice something in common?"
The younger Dr. Hunnicutt observed, "Yes, the bruise from the seat belt."
"Look at Marie's chest." Quincy directed
Looking down at the young woman's body, Erin immediately saw what Quincy was getting at. There was a faint bruise extending from the au pair's right collarbone to her waist on the left side. The bruise was identical to Erin's own caused by the hearses passenger shoulder harness. Quincy's driver's harness bruise went from the right to the left. Dubois' bruise could only mean one thing.
Erin exclaimed, "Marie wasn't the driver, she was the passenger!"
Just then the San Francisco deputy Medical Examiner burst in. He appeared to be about Quincy's age, and did not look happy at all. The Northern California ME looked familiar to Quincy. Possibly from the conference, but the Quincy didn't seem to think so. No, he had seen those ferret-like features before years and years ago.
"Just what is going on here!" The ferret-faced doctor bellowed.
Quincy identified himself, "I'm Dr. Quincy of the Los Angeles Medical Examiner's office. My associate and I were following up on a traffic accident an LA County Vehicle was involved in."
The San Francisco Medical Examiner retorted, "Well, Doctor, you are not in Los Angeles. I am Dr. Burns, Deputy San Francisco Medical Examiner and this is my case."
The Los Angeles Doctor acquiesced, "Yes, doctor, but if you notice the bruises, you'll see that things might not be as cut and dry as they seem. Miss Dubois may not have been driving the car."
Burns snorted, "Those bruises could have been caused by many things, regardless of what you and your young nurse friend my think.
Erin spoke up, "With all due respect, I am Doctor Erin Hunnicutt of San Francisco General, ad I concur with my colleague from Southern California."
Frank Burn also had a sense of deja vu when he first saw Quincy. The San Francisco ME put things together after the young doctor's outburst and proclaimed, "Quincy! I remember you from Korea. And Erin Hunnicutt, oh I know that name. Doing daddy's dirty work are we? Did Pierce put you up to this, are he, McIntyre and Hunnicutt outside in a surveillance van yucking it up? Where's the microphone? You two better get out of here before I call the cops!"
Quincy told Erin, "He's lost it. We better get out of here. Don't worry, we'll find a way to get the truth out about Marie. I briefly served with Burns in Korea, and I really don't want to be around to see what happens next."
Erin agreed, "My father and Trapper told me stories about Frank Burns as I got older, as a cautionary tale of what to look out for when I was a medical student and young doctor. They never told me Burns was in San Francisco, though.
