And so began the Toil…
It was a slow laborious process and the Animals were watched at all times, Dogs and Foxes prowled around them, keeping them in line and making sure they did their jobs, As they hauled stones and slate from a makeshift quarry, and brought it to the Construction site of the Windmill, It was Boxer's great strength that really made the difference, His was that of all the Animals combined, Ducks paved the Walls together as the Stones were put in place, Geese carried large solid sticks to support them Construction, All according to Napoleon's design, The shifts lasted from dawn till dusk and in the evening they came home hungry and weary and barely anything to eat.
While Napoleon and his Allies Increased their Numbers, Two more gangs had Joined them on the Farm, The first gang was made of Street Cats and led by Small Rat sized Cat named Warren T Rat, So named due to his penchant for disguising himself as a Rat, and the Other gang was Conveniently made of Mice, Led by a Hulking Bully called the Mouse king.
They also had their Minions slave the Animals, While they were often seen in the Company of Napoleon and his Party, And together they stuffed themselves and lorded over everyone else, And we're pretty much left to their own devices.
Until one night, Wilbur made a strange discovery, He was asleep in the Pen When he heard a creaking noise that woke him up, He looked and saw the gate had been opened, He went over and managed to glimpse Napoleon, Squealer, Voracious, Rocko, Warren T Rat, and the mouse king all entering the Barn.
"What in the name of…?" Wilbur quietly trotted out of the Pen and followed them, He made his way to the House and found the door locked, He then saw lights coming through the Windows and investigated.
"What is this?" He asked himself as he saw, Napoleon and his Friends all seated around Jones old table, Drinking and Laughing as they are off of the Table in great pleasure, With them were two Other Foxes, Voracious Father and Wife and a tiny figure that seemed to be counting, Wilbur watched them as they laughed and stuffed their faces with ravenous glee, In the other rooms, Wilbur could just make out the shapes of Foxes, Cats and Mice lounging about and resting on the furniture.
"They're behaving like Men!" He murmured.
Wilbur continued to watch in horror as Napoleon and his followers discussed their business among themselves, Though Wilbur could not exactly hear any of it through the thick glass.
"My friends." Said Napoleon. "So far the work on the windmill has been a good process, As long as our laborers can manage the work, It will be an excellent increase in our Economy."
"Well, I second that." Said Warren as he puffed up his cigar. "But don't you think we're going a bit uh… slow about this?"
"He's right…" Agreed Rocko. "The current pace of the work is good enough but what will happen if it's not completed by next winter?"
"It will be enough." Said Napoleon. "Just keep them in line and the work might be finished by next Fall."
"That's a bet I'll take." Said Voracious.
"Perhaps if we were to collect more Laborers the work would go faster." Said Voracity, Voracious wife.
"You would suggest slavery?" Asked Squealer in shock.
"Of course not?" Asked Voracity. "Not that we're already doing it."
"From a certain point of view perhaps.." Said Volpee, Voracious father.
"Regardless, It still doesn't change things." Said Napoleon."The windmill will be completed and with it our increase in power."
"Hm, In what? Sobering around?" Asked the Mouse king. "When we agreed to join up with you, you said there would be fights ahead of us!"
"And a little Trickery as well." Said Napoleon. "Something of which you would find delightful Mouse king, I have a few tasks in mind that your talents will be most useful for, Don't worry."
"Like what exactly huh?" Asked the Mouse King.
"Hopefully something at least a bit more Humane." Sneered a little cockroach named Digit. "Not that a witless barbarian like you would understand with your repugnant-"
"You wanna finish that Bug!?" The Mouse king drew his sword and pointed at Digit.
"Hey, Hey, Hey, Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, No need for that." Said Warren as Digit retreated behind him. "He didn't mean nothin- Huh?"
Warren caught a quick glimpse at something through the window suddenly.
"What is it?" Asked Napoleon.
Wilbur had quickly ducked away from the window, But before he could run off, A Three cats and a Fox suddenly jumped out in front of him.
"Uh, Hello fellas." Said Wilbur. "F-fine night."
"Out past curfew aren't we Piggy?" Sneered one of the Cats.
"I think he's getting nosey lads." Cackled another named Jake.
The fox stepped forward and nashed his teeth at Wilbur. "Think you're going somewhere, Piggy?"
Before Wilbur could back up, Three Dogs suddenly appeared behind Wilbur, Snarling, and Nashing their teeth threateningly, Wilbur sweated as they all trapped him in a circle, giving him no chance of escape.
"How about you learn something tonight." Said the third Cat, Ace. "Don't be sure to go out in the night, It's a dangerous time." He pulled out a club and raised it above Wilbur's head but before he could bring it down a voice called out. "ENOUGH!"
All heads turned to see Voracity standing there, Glaring at them all.
"What is the meaning of this?" She asked. "Troops return to your duties immediately!"
The Fox, Dogs, and Cats all slunk off, Wilbur tried to leave too, But Voracity stopped him.
"You!" She snapped, Wilbur gulped and looked back at her.
"Care to explain your business here?" She asked. "This area's out of bounds, Why are you here?"
"N-No reason." Said Wilbur. "I was W-Walking, And the guards jumped me, T-They tried to beat me up."
"Why?" Asked Voracity.
"I-I don't know." Said Wilbur. "I think It was for fun."
"Are you sure It wasn't for a reason?" Asked Voracity.
"Uh… Reason?" Asked Wilbur.
"Did you see anything of interest that they didn't want you seeing?" She asked.
Wilbur paused. "No."
"Did you hear anything?"
"N-No… Nothing at all." Said Wilbur.
"Get back to the Barn." Ordered Voracity, And Wilbur did just that.
When he got back, He immediately tucked himself in his bed, He stayed awake a little longer just to make sure none of Napoleon's other followers were watching him, Satisfied with his safety, He drifted off to sleep, Despite hearing a strange sound in the barn, He didn't know what it was, But It sounded like paint on wood.
The next day he shared his concerns with Boxer, Benjamin, Maggie, Grace, Mrs. Calloway, and a Rat named Templeton.
"Listen now, I need to tell you all something." Said Wilbur, Making sure no one else heard them.
"Well is it?" Asked Templeton. "I swear I've just been ignored until now, So can ya please make it interesting."
"Oh shut up you." Snapped Mrs. Calloway.
"It's Napoleon and his Friends." Said Wilbur. "They're staying in the Farmhouse."
"What?" Asked Maggie.
"And sleeping in its beds!" Continued Wilbur, The others were shocked!
"What?!"
"No."
"Your Joking."
"Outrageous!"
"They can't!"
"I know, It's against the commandment." Said Wilbur.
"No animal shall
sleep in a bed." Recited Benjamin.
"Yes, That's right." Agreed Grace.
Just then Squealer came up to the group, Followed by Todd.
"My friends," he said. "Anything the matter?"
Wilbur and the others turned to glare at Squealer. "Care to explain why your sleeping in beds runt?" Asked Maggie.
Squealer was taken aback. "Beg Pardon?"
"Don't play coy Squealer." Scolded Mrs. Calloway. "Wilbur told us what he saw last night, He saw you, Napoleon, and the rest of those Thugs staying that godforsaken house, Sleeping in beds, Eating from Man's table and having a jolly good time doing it."
Squealer did not seem fazed by Mrs. Calloway in the slightest. "Oh is that what this is about? Allow me to explain than, Yes we have been staying in the Farmhouse, Napoleon is the brains of the farm after all he needs a place to work, Would you have your leader live in a sty?"
"He's a pig." Said Templeton. "He's supposed to live in a sty."
"Wrong It wouldn't be dignified." Said Squealer. "And another thing, Yes we do sleep in beds, And why not? There's no ruling against beds, A pile of Straw is a bed, Would you rob us of our sleep? So that we're too tired to carry out our work? Hmm?"
"It's against the Commandment." Said Grace.
"What Commandment?" Asked Squealer. "There was never a Commandment against beds, Read it."
The animals looked up to the Commandments and saw a change.
No animal shall
Sleep in a bed
With sheets.
"What?" Asked Wilbur.
"You see?" Said Squealer. "It's a commandment against Sheets and we certainly don't sleep in a bed with Sheets."
"Er, Yeah your all probably mistaken." Said Todd.
"Napoleon is always right." Said Boxer with a nod.
Squealer smiled.
That night, Wilbur and Maggie stayed up that night and discussed the day's events.
"No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets." Muttered Maggie. "What kind of Bullcrap is that?"
"It's not right," Wilbur said. "It's not what Old Major would have wanted."
"Well, they call the shots now." Said Maggie. "There's not much we can do."
"I fear dark times are coming Maggie." Said Wilbur. "Dark times indeed."
Maggie looked out into the night sky And agreed.
Meanwhile.
Behind the Farmhouse, Rocko had snuck out, Holding a device in his hands, When he made sure no one saw him, He placed it on the ground and Activated it, The device was a small holopad that spark a large portal out and Rocko knelt before the Calls recipient.
"Yes?" Asked a voice.
"Napoleon leads us well, My lord." Said Rocko.
Rocko bowed his head low as he felt the red eyes stare at him, The eyes of Lord Jargafar.
