Belize City. Province of Bonita. Announcement Day.
Lily St. James was doing the one thing she loved most: Taking Pictures. She had some time to spare before the announcement came on, so she decided to take advantage of the free time and snap some pictures of the landscape outside her dorm. After a few more shots, Lily checked her watch and saw that it was almost time for the royal broadcast. She turned off her camera and headed into her dorm building.
Once she got up the stairs and into her dorm room on the third floor, Lily saw that to her relief, the room she shared with her room mate was empty. Lily's room mate had offered to watch the announcement with her and provide moral support. Lily had politely refused the offer though; mainly because she didn't want to anyone to see her cry if she wasn't chosen. Lily St. James was no fool. She figured that it was going to be a long shot, but that hadn't stopped her from filling out an application anyway. It had been a childhood fantasy of hers to share a kiss with a beautiful princess.
Lily sat on her bed and turned in the television. The national anthem of Illèa began to play exactly as the screen lit up and Lily St. James came face to face with the Crown Princess of Illèa herself: Melody Schreave.
"Good afternoon, my fellow Illèans." Princess Melody announced with a smile. "After receiving one hundred of the best applicants and careful consideration, I am pleased to announce the 35 persons that have been selected." As she rattled off the list of names and provinces, Lily kept bracing herself for the worst.
"Pick me...pick me!" Lily begged the screen.
"From the province of Bonita...miss Lily St. James." Princess Melody announced as Lily was completely stunned. The young photographer had hoped that she would be chosen for the selection, but she had not actually believed that she would actually win it. Now that she was one of the selected, it seemed like some dream that Lily hoped she would never wake up from.
After the selection, Lily decided to call her parents and break the news to them. "Hello?" A calm voice belonging to Isaac St. James answered as Lily grinned to herself.
"Hi daddy!" Lily exclaimed as she could hear the happiness in her father's voice.
"My Lily, your mama and I saw the announcement and we are so happy for you." Mr. St. James said with genuine enthusiasm for the opportunity that his daughter now had.
"Thank you daddy!" Lily replied as she waited for her father to put her mother on the phone. A few minutes later, Gail St. James cleared her voice as she spoke to her daughter.
"Hello, Lily?" Mrs. St. James called out.
"Hi mommy, I was chosen for the selection!" She exclaimed.
"I'm very happy for you Lily, I just hope you remember that there are thirty four other men and women besides you and you might not get chosen." Lily's mother explained, trying to act as the voice of reason which Lily herself did not care for.
"Please mommy, don't spoil it for me!" Lily begged.
"I don't want to spoil it for you my sweet, I'm just saying I know that you did this because you were trying to distract yourself from Simon..."
"I don't care about Simon, I hope that he and Abigail are happy together!" Lily spat. Besides, she had eventually realized that she wasn't bisexual. She was gay and their relationship would have eventually ended even if Simon hadn't betrayed her by cheating on her with her best friend of all people; ex best friend now.
"All right, all right." Gail said as she knew enough not to push her daughter on the subject of her previous and as of now, only serious relationship. "I know that Princess Melody will adore you and besides, even if she doesn't, you get to have a royal adventure!" Lily had to concede that her mom did have a point there. Thoughts of living in the palace and wearing beautiful gowns and being waited on as if she was a princess herself was a wonderful thing to think about.
"I know mom, it's probably the closest that I'll ever get to be a royal...unless I marry Princess Melody." Lily remarked as she imagined herself living in the palace and rubbing elbows with the creme de le creme of Illèan society.
"I know that it will be wonderful darling." Her father said as he got back on the phone to speak with his only daughter. "You have nothing to worry about Lily. You are kind and smart and beautiful and the Princess would be a fool not to fall head over heels in love. All you have to do is be yourself and you'll be fine."
"Thanks daddy, I'll honestly be amazed if I make it to the elite." Lily teased as she couldn't keep the smile off of her face.
