Servants of Remnant
Chaldea is gone, but the memories remain. A world, filled with fairy tales, monsters and men. A history unlike any other. Sometimes… a hero is needed. From another world, from another time. Not all of them are great, not all of them are 'good'. But when the world needs a hero, these Servants answer the call. Perhaps only one, perhaps many do. These are the tales of many timelines. The 'Servants of Chaldea' who come to Remnant.
Salieri
"Huh, strange name. You from Atlas?" the woman was quick to comment, leading Salieri to just… stare, in confusion. His name was strange? His last name, certainly, but Antonio and its derivitives had to be common enough. The blonde, looked at his expression and then rubbed the back of her head, chuckling. "Right, memory trouble, ah well, my name is Mariel Bán."
A face, white hair, a princess of a nation, gone too soon. Marie, MARIE! Salieri groaned as he clutched his head, avoiding looking the woman in her eyes. She didn't look anything like… that princess, but the name, the name, it had set something off in him… for a brief moment. A hand rested on his shoulder, and he looked up. "You hanging in there?"
"That name…" he muttered out, it was one letter to long… "Miss… Bán," he started… slowly pulling his hands away from his head, she opened her mouth, but both of them had to snap their heads towards a wall at the sound of growling.
Miss Bán growled. "Damnit, not again! That's the third time today!" she complained, getting up from his bedside as walking over towards the door, and then out it. A few seconds later, he heard a gun's report, followed by a second, and third. "Come on and get some ya Grimm bastards! I've got enough shot for all of ya!" Miss Bán shouted, and fired again, and again. About fifteen seconds later, the shooting stopped, and she came back in, carrying some sort of… mechanical abomination that seemed to be part shotgun and part… he wasn't sure what the other part was, weaponry was far from his forte.
"Sorry about that, you'd think after the right arse kicking you gave the Grimm they'd fuck off, but no, they just keep on coming," Miss Bán complained, pulling the massive magazine off of her gun before before walking over to her closet and throwing it open, bending down and grabbing another one and clicking it into place on her weapon before holding it over her shoulder and going back to her chair. It was getting very easy to dissociate her from… both individuals she reminded him of from appearance and name, due to her foul mouth and strange weapon.
"I… seem to forget exactly what happened… Miss Bán, could you… explain what you saw me doing?" he asked, concerned as she sighed and rubbed the back of her head, ruffling her blonde hair before she looked at him.
"What I saw was just the tail end of what looked like a goddamn massacre, you," she pointed directly towards him with one finger, "were still fighting like twenty Grimm on your lonesome, half dead, that suit of yours torn to shreds, bleeding heavily, and the ocean itself was literally a path of black shit until the horizon. So, quite frankly, me and the boys who'd come to investigate the reason reports of Grimm heading to the northern shore had been coming in all day, leads me to one damn conclusion." She raised her hand, before really, giving him the finger. "You sir, have some fucking issues."
"You are not wrong," Salieri admitted, bobbing his head in acknowledgement as Miss Bán just sighed.
"I mean, thanks and all, the Grimm population probably won't be recovering from that for a while, but whatever you did to cause that… don't do it again. Because I'll be frank, you do that near a populated area…" she slowly made a cutting motion over her neck and Salieri just lowered his head. These Grimm were attracted to the very thing that drove him as an Avenger… he was a walking bomb essentially…
"Course, the fact is some people can't control their problems, and really if it was just you, than this little hut would have had far more than three attacks in the past day. So here's my question bucko," Miss Bán started and then pointed towards his suit, which was laying in the chair next to the bedside. "...What happened to that other garment you were wearing? And was it the reason the Grimm were after you like… uh… never actually seen that many Grimm in one place before…" she muttered, rubbing the back of her head as Salieri just closed his eyes.
"...That second suit you saw… that was the Wailing Facade… something bound to me that… is the only reason I am able to fight at all," he raised his bare hand, the tanned skin unfamiliar to him as Miss Bán raised an eyebrow.
"The only reason?" she leaned forward, looking towards his suit and then back at him. "...Then why were you fighting at all?"
"I…" was a murderer, killer, rival, "was just a pianist before this…" he managed to get out, closing his eyes. "I… have all the ability to fight normally… well that being a man who plays such an instrument implies," Miss Bán just seemed to give him a skeptical look, before a voice appeared in his head again, that damned musician, why here, why now!
"Nonsense my friend, I am far from damned… And you are better than that, can be better," the calm voice said, he refused to identify it, to hope or to hate it, only bare it.
"You? A damned pianist, what sort of super Grimm slayer is 'just' a pianist?" she complained, before looking at his suit again. "Then again… where are you from, if you remember?"
Salieri looked down… and closed his eyes… For a brief moment, he tried to concentrate. Where? Where was he from? He'd been… somewhere before. Ice, snow… the metal hallways, the… shining faces. A face appeared for a moment, that smug… no, that smiling face holding out his hand towards him, standing beside a girl with pink hair, and a young orange haired girl… and behind them, hanging off of his hated rival's shoulder… Marie… Marie… "I… am from… somewhere cold… it was snowing a lot… there was…" he was really stuttering now… there were happy memories, memories he was unfamiliar with… despite their recency.
Yet with those happy memories… the more he tried to recall, the more his… mind seemed less clouded. The more he focused on that smiling face, the times she appeared, the times he'd stood beside other Servants who had capabilities similar to him… and their power to rise to the occasion in the battles they had to end worlds… he closed his eyes, and gripped his head as the static jolt came again, he groaned before gritting his teeth… it hurt, it hurt…
"...Holy shit… You're from Atlas…" Miss Bán muttered, something he barely caught as the pain subsided once again. Olympus, Hero, gods, Zeus, tree, MARIE! The mere mention of such a word had him in pain again, leaning forward as he tried to fight the memories once more, the horror and more, the heroism… "SHIT!" Then he heard her jump out of her chair and rush to his side. "Calm down! Calm down! I'm sorry alright!" she held him, his breathing becoming heavier as Miss Bán slowly let go of him as he was able to… not stem the tide of memories, but just… ignore them.
She was silent after that, going over to her chair once more and sitting down… or more just collapsing into it before muttering under her breath, something he easily heard. "What the hell did they do to you…" she looked towards him… with sympathy and horror pasted across her face.
Slowly, she reached into a pocket on her dress, pulling out a strange phone-like device and doing something with one hand, before holding it up to her ear. Seconds later he heard the object beep. "Jack, I think this shit goes far deeper than either our paygrade or than we'd hoped," she complained, and Salieri just raised an eyebrow as the voice on the other side spoke up.
"What the hell are you talking about-" Jack started, before she cut him off
"Can't say it here, or he'll have a fucking episode, yes our mystery man's awake, now round up as many people as you can, we gotta get this guy out of here," Miss Ban shot over the phone.
"Can you at least-" the voice started again, exasperated
"I'll explain later, just do it!" she ordered, before ending the call and shoving the phone into her pocket, and standing up. "Can you stand Tonio?" she asked, much more calm than she'd just been on the phone. Slowly, he tried to climb out of bed, standing up slowly, and he clutched his side, but he stood up. Miss Bán came over to him.
"I'm going to ask, really quick, is your Aura unlocked?" she asked, and he just shook his head in the negative, and she swore again under her breath, before sighing. "What sort of…" she looked at him, before at the fancy suit on the chair, which was far from immaculate, but in better condition than he expected it to be given the apparent circumstances he'd been found in. "I'm gonna get changed, you do the same," she ordered, before walking over to the closet… and just opening the door, and then shutting it behind her.
Quickly, Salieri pulled the shirt off, looking down at the mass of bandages covering his chest and upper arms, and then removing his pants, his legs in nearly as poor a condition as he grabbed his suit, dressing swiftly before ending with sliding on his shoes, and then looking away from the closet. Twenty seconds later, Miss Bán slammed the door open, and he turned to her. She was now wearing black leather jacket over a white shirt, leather gloves, a stetson hat, a bandolier… were those cowboy boots? She looked like Billy the Kid… with a shotgun and minus the red scarf and very clearly female.
"Come over here," she asked, holding out her hand. Salieri followed the order, slowly walking towards her, his dust covered and slightly torn suit waving a bit as he did so and he took her hand in one of his.
Slowly, she closed her eyes, before dropping her gun and holding her other hand to his. "In life… we achieve freedom to seek the stars… We walk forward as explorers to see it all, the infinite adventures and our unbound souls. Bring forth your soul, to walk alongside me and towards the stars," she chanted slowly, Salieri slowly feeling his mind turn at such a thing… did he even have a soul left?
"Oh my friend, you have more than a soul left… and perhaps more, if you'd so dare to grasp it. Come now, walk forward and find your truth and goal. She's waiting for you," the voice in his head recited as a field flickered over his suit, a serene blue, almost completely contrasting field of energy… his Aura, the soul he'd thought gone. Had it returned? Had it ever left? Whatever the case… as he opened his eyes, he knew it was here, and here to stay.
"That should keep you going Tonio. Even a 'mere' Pianist should be able to take more than a few hits with a decent amount of Aura in reserve," Miss Bán said as she bent down and picked up her gun. "Come on, let's wait outside," she motioned, walking over towards the room's door.
She led him out and into a hallway, and further outside to a porch where a pair of chairs sat. Desert stretched for miles, but in the distance he could barely see a city of tents… and individuals walking towards the house. Miss Bán took a seat at one of the chairs, and Salieri did the same, even as sand blew over the porch. The house was… poorly maintained for what he could see. "Right, just gonna tell you now… We're gonna be taking you somewhere, mister man."
"And… where am I being taken to?" he asked, leaning forward and twiddling his thumbs as she cracked her neck.
"Somewhere better than the ass end of Remnant to be defended, we're taking your sorry ass to Vale," she started, before sighing. "Look, Vacuo's a… eh… let's just say if people find out your problem they'll be more tempted to put a bullet in your head, or piss you off enough to do… whatever that Wailing Facade thing is. And quite frankly, you are essentially a walking weapon. So the safest place for you, as far as most people, myself included, would be considered either Vale or the other place up north. But as the other place clearly has a history you don't like, Vale's the only option," she explained, and he just nodded… perhap it would be better… maybe. He couldn't deny himself, he was an Avenger… but even with his hatred and more… there were still people who needed defending. Only one individual did not fall under that, as horrid as he may be.
"And even then, you've defended me before. What was it you said? 'Only I have the right to kill him?'" The voice in his head, the calm one, not the crazy one, stated… he had no idea if he'd completely lost his mind, even outside of the Wailing Facade, but… at least he could think straight enough.
"That's… understandable…" he assumed, Miss Bán raising her head.
"Chin up Tonio, I lived in Vale, and learned how to be a Hunter there. I trust Ozpin enough that he'll take care of you," she said, leaning over and patting his back. He looked towards Miss Bán and smiled a bit. Hopefully he could… find himself there as well. Then she looked up, and towards the sand. "And there's the gang Jack's brought together," she muttered, and he looked towards them.
It was a group of six individuals, four men and two women. One of the men and one of the women had… features that reminded him of another time, but only slightly. The tail of a wolf was swinging from the woman, while the man had what appeared to be bat wings on his back. All of the individuals were in… rather light armor or clothing, but each had some strange weapon from what he could see. Miss Bán stood up, tapping his shoulder, and he rose to join her, walking out into the sand as Miss Bán rested her shotgun on her shoulder.
"Well, seems we've got quite the team here Jack!" she said with a smirk towards the man in the lead, a young man also wearing a cowboy outfit, but a far… he wanted to say fanicer one, with a white jacket over a brown shirt with a rather fancy design on it, and very nice pants. He also wasn't wearing a hat, but his… green hair was rather long.
"More than a few crazies M-" Jack started, but she put her gun up into the air.
"Don't say it," she warned, motioning her head towards him, and Jack just sighed.
"Well alright then… my name's Jack Saurer Apfel, and you are?" Jack said, walking up and holding out his hand, Salieri took it, shaking the man's hand with a small smile before responding, with confidence.
"Antonio Salieri," he said, before looking at the holstered revolvers the man had on his hips. Seemed he had a particular fighting style… he actually saw a small emblem on the handles of the two guns. The one with a redwood handle had painted and carved green apple in it, when the one with a green metal handle had a red apple painted plainly on it.
"So, introductions everyone?" Miss Bán started, looking around at the group, and the girl with a wolf tail stepped forward. She was wearing a mostly blue cotton dress, and some black metal armor plating covering her sides and shoulders, and her hair was black, but her eyes were yellow. Her weapon of choice seemed to be some sort of massive shield… he was fairly sure even with his strength as a Servant, he'd actually need to be wearing the Wailing Facade to lift that shield.
"Noire Louve, bounty hunter," she said with a nod towards him, and he politely bowed. For a moment, she seemed slightly surprised, but otherwise, she just hefted her shield with one hand. The bat man walked up next, stroking his goatee before speaking up.
"Name's Yuma mister Salieri," he said, walking up and holding out his hand as well, a smile on his face as Salieri took his hand and shook it as well. Yuma hummed before taking a step back after that, the next person to walk up was the other woman.
Her hair was a more crimson red, and her weapon of choice was some sort of spear… but she was also carrying a quiver full of arrows on her back. She was mostly wearing red, but she had a bit of gold mixed in, but she was in the most… modern outfit of the bunch besides Yuma. A red ballistic vest covered her chest, while her golden pants had red trimm, she was also wearing a red skirt and combat boots. Her vest actually had an emblem on it, like Jack's guns. It was a golden volcano emblem. "I'm Laffe Marigold," he, really, really had to try and keep focus on the first name… "You alright pal?"
"Stick to first names," Miss Bán suggested, and looked at Salieri as he shook his head.
"My… apologies Miss Laffe," he said, holding up his hand, and she took it, shaking it rather hard before letting go and letting the second man speak up.
"Just call me Sheldon," he had only clothes on, and there were rather torn up in places. Clearly patchworked together in a mismatch of colors, but the shirt's main color seemed to, at one point, have been pearl white before all the other colors of the rainbow had found their way in. "Normal hunter, sorta," he said, rubbing the back of his head and chuckling, ruffling his pearl white hair before raising his weapon of choice. A much smaller buckler shield that was attached to his arm, be could barely make out to functions on it, like the disc on the front with different colored chambers, the barrel on the front of the buckler, and the handle he was gripping with the hand the buckler was set on. At his side was a small set of daggers as well, but those seemed to be more backup than anything.
"A pleasure," he added, as the oldest of the group, the final man who was currently balding a bit, but was carrying a large sword on his back with an ease that made Salieri feel more than a little inadequate. But besides the massive sword, the man in mostly grey clothes, save the brown combat boots and the black harness over his chest, was also carrying a pair of what appeared to be sawn-off shotguns on his hips, attached to his belt and inside their holsters.
"And I'm Garland Steele," he said simply, crossing his arms over his chest and looking Salieri up and down. "...I question how this man was able to do what I saw yesterday."
"That's the crux of the problem, so, to all of you, I have a job, and yeah, I'll pay all of you, two thousand Lien each, to help me get this man to Vale… quietly," Miss Bán started, resting her shotgun back on her shoulder as Jack just silently walked over to her side, already having accepted the job it seemed.
"Two thousand Lien? Just to get this guy to Vale?" Yuma asked, humming as he stroked his chin. "What's the catch?"
"...My presence attracts Grimm," Salieri admitted quietly, lowering his head and covering his chest. "And… I can't fight them on my own,"
"That's a lie, and we know it… there's another reason isn't there?" Garland started as Noire just quietly walked over to Jack's side, giving Salieri a sad, concern look as Miss Bán spoke up.
"Let's call it the problem of if he does what he did yesterday, Vacuo will be swarming with every Grimm in a Oum knows how long mile radius heading for his ass, I've had three attacks in the past day just for holding him inside the house, and two of those while he was unconscious, whatever it is that's wrong with him, the Grimm want him, bad," she explained as best she could without… mentioning any of the conclusions she had come to and didn't bother to correct.
"Two thousand seems a little low if we're going to be essentially huntting by Grimm just for being near the guy," Laffe said, raising her free and and rubbing her fingers together, and Miss Bán sighed.
"Alright then, name your price?" she started, and Laffe smirked.
"Three thousand,"
"Two thousand and five hundred,"
"Deal," Laffe said, smirking as she came up to Antonio's side, patting him on the back before turning to face the remaining three hunters.
"I'll take it if it's the same price as her," Sheldon offered, and Miss Bán just sighed as Jack pat her on the shoulder, and then she waved at Sheldon, who nodded and walked up beside Noire.
"I'll do it, but at two thousand two fifty," Yuma stated, politely nodding and Miss Bán just blinked before nodding, and Yuma walked up, as Garland sighed.
"Alright, if you're going hunting like that… I'll do it at the original price," Garland said, walking up to Miss Bán and shaking her hand, and she nodded.
"Well then, seems we're set… everyone got all their gear before coming, because we've got quite the trek ahead of us," she started, everyone looking towards each other, and nodding before she spun around and looked at Salieri.
He quietly nodded, then she snapped her fingers, the group all gathering around, Salieri getting in the center of the loose circle before they started walking. He was… rather surprised at this turn of events, all things considered.
"Perhaps you should be a bit more optimistic my friend," that damned voice said in his head, but he just closed his eyes and bared its presence… he would find him, eventually, and he would fulfil his purpose… he had to.
And as the group walked on into the desert, he pondered… just what world was this like? What foes lay before them… and could he even trust these people? He… had to find out, he had to find… that smile once more. All of them… maybe.
AN: And here we have the final Chapter 2 chapter, and the reveal of who that mysterious woman was. Mariel Bán, an OC character, and a whole gaggle of Hunters and Huntresses as Original Characters... and one maybe familiar face for those who watched Volume 4. Yuma. But yeah, Salieri is an interesting man, and I love people have done with the TV tropes page, I hope that gets more improved later. Still, I hope all of you enjoyed this chapter, and if any of you have questions, please, post them in the reviews. They might just get answered ;)
